Dear Nedlam, I don’t have many friends, and I’m kind of awkward when it comes to this sort of thing. Can you tell me how to make friends? I’m kind of lonely.

-sad+alone Dear Sad and Alone: First of all, my heart goes out to you because I’ve felt that way before sometimes. Even if they may not admit it, I think everyone feels lonely sometimes, and I think a lot of people have trouble making friends. Now some people are just extremely bubbly, or outgoing and are able to strike up a conversation with anyone and three seconds later are the best of friends. But a good amount of people are not like that, and feel shy or a little intimidated to strike up a friendship with somebody, or anybody. My first piece of

advice would be to join something.

Whether it’s a sport, or club, or whatever, if you are around people who love doing the same things that you love, you are more likely to become friends because you have things in common. Another thing is to find the group of people you fit in most with. While here at MHS we don’t necessarily have cliques, we do, however, have groups of people who tend to hang out with each other more often than with other people, and they all seem to be on the same wavelength. A nice thing about high school is that you are pretty much

H

igh school is a journey of courage, self- discovery, and taking a decent selfie once in a while.

Since social media began its takeover of the impressionable minds of young adults, the youngest generation, professionally labeled Generation Z, earned the nickname: “The Selfie Generation.”

Whether a picture is taken at the beach, or before a music concert, or during a routine walk to class in a crowded hallway, taking a worthy selfie can change the overall mood of a person’s day. So, what on earth can a person who cares about “Instagram likes” possibly do with their future?

People from Generation Z were born after 1995, which makes most of them adolescents, yet they have been dubbed many different things despite being a young group; by molding expectations, older generations confined the youth.

Why isn’t the story of Eqbal Asa’d, who is currently the youngest doctor at the age of 14, defining the younger generation?

A doctor traditionally goes through years of schooling before they earn the prefix “Dr.,” a dream to many, an honor to few. Doctors age with years of knowledge, but Asa’d is a different story. As a Palestinian Muslim woman, the young prodigy “started...

Medicine school when she was just 14 years old,” according to Radiance Weekly. With will and motivation, Asa’d received her Bachelor Degree in Medicine, and she will continue her education in Ohio to move closer to her goal of becoming a pediatrician.

Is it her age that makes it insignificant? Ironically, that is the exact reason people should be talking about Asa’d. Underestimating the youngest generation is not only a waste of time, but laughable. The potential they have has been tainted by the turmoil the older generations have left behind.

There are stars of our generation at home. Karina Moreira, who recently passed away at the hand of cancer, served as a role model for Malden students and beyond. Using social media and blogging, she spent her ultimate years fulfilling her love for fashion online, inspiring people and roping the attention of celebrities like supermodel Gisele Bundchen and Taylor Swift. Moreira is a role model who highlights

the social media aspect in the youngest generation, a role model who should define the greater aspects of Generation Z. Our younger generation always seems to repeatedly fail to impress the older generation, also known as the “Baby Boomers.” The years following World War II experienced a high birth rate, creating an overpowering force in the government, the economy, and the lives of the younger generations. Before they start to judge the selfie-takers, they should take a look at their own hands and realize who raised them.

Let me be clear: age is not an excuse nor an entitlement.

Age does not signify maturity: an older person is not simply more cultured or better suited for the harsh realities of the world because he had the chance to gain a few more years of experience, similarly to the case of a younger person, who should not be subjected to the confines of society’s expectations. When someone mentions he are sixteen, there should not be predetermined thoughts or expectations. Simply being an age should not mean something. As Yoko Ono once said, “time is a concept that humans created.”

An older person should not allowed to dictate the minds of our youth, or train them to take their places because they are trying to improve the world.

Do not think “Baby Boomers” are original in often believing that the younger generations are selfish and consumed with maintaining meaningless conversations with their friends. Once upon a time, “Baby Boomers” were once considered egotistical by generations who raised them. The difference between the two generations is highlighted by Generation Z’s extensive use of cellphones and computers. Social media entered the roots and veins of American culture and exceeded all fads and trends; it has become a social norm.

Generation Z adapted to the technological advances, and is using the changes around them to learn about world events and connect with people.

Each time young people take selfies, or tweet, or update their Facebook statuses, they are connecting with peers, as well as people from all over the world.

The connections are revolutionary, and those from Generation Z have the power to grow.

The next time you notice an adolescent taking a picture of himself on their phone, prevent yourself from thinking negatively. Remember that he does not even realize the heights of his potential, and it will only be a few more years before the youngest generation keeps its promises to work with each other, and build better connections.

Saying Yes to the Dress?

hink to yourself: have ever seen a boy getting sent home or having to call a parent because of a violation of the dress codes. Never, right?

These days dress codes in schools seem to be aimed more at girls than it does boys. Schools ban leggings, tank tops, crop shirts, etc. because when girls wear them, it becomes provocative and inviting to other students. Don’t show your shoulders, they say; it distracts the boys and lowers their test scores.

Can’t wear clingy pants: they’re too sexy. Even in high school, girls’ bodies are targeted with pointdress codes.

For instance, in Utah high school, almost two dozen girls’ yearbook photos were photoshopped without their knowledge; necklines raised, sleeves added and tattoos erased. No male student’s photos were edited.

In another situation, in Bingham High School, also in Utah, two dozen girls were denied entry into

the homecoming dance because the school believed their dresses were inappropriate. Stated by parents, the school did only what they thought was right and hadn’t invited further insight with others.

Schools say that they enforce their rules heavily and efficiently, but every time I see someone getting lectured for clothing, it is always a girl who has clothes with something so small as shorts slightly shorter than the code says. There are dressing rules for boys, sure, but you never see it enforced. And if you do, it is a rare occasion. Many schools require boys to wear belts, to avoid sagging. However, almost every corner I turn there is at least one boy who is sagging his pants, some all the way down to his knees - no scolding involved.

Not only does it focus on the gender, it focuses on the type of girl as well. At the Utah school that edited students’ yearbook portraits, two girls were wearing very similar outfits, but only one of the photos got photoshopped. The girl who was photoshopped had a curvier figure than the other girl.

At Oakleaf High School in Orange Park, Florida, a girl was given a dress code violation suit in order that it would embarrass her and she wouldn’t do it again, even though the skirt in question was knee-length. The schools who follow this code say it is disciplinary, but I’m afraid this is more humiliation than any kind of punishment.

No girl should not be forced to wear things that say “I’m inappropriate!” around her peers. The outcomes of most dress code violation scenarios stand to say that not all dress codes are fair to all people. Banning clothing, denying access to social events, being forced to wear disciplinary outfits while boys still walk around in lowcut tank tops and sagging pants is unfair and humiliating to those who are punished because of it.

But then the anesthetic turns into poison and by then it’s too late because you are mainlining it now, straight into your soul.

It is rotting you and you can’t stop.”

o writes accomplished author Laurie Halse Anderson in her 2009 novel Wintergirls, chronicling the daily struggles of a teenage girl suffering from a devastating case of anorexia. Few could argue against her ability to craft a near-perfect piece of literature; she spins startling webs of metaphors and imagery easier than breathing, bringing to light the very real pain those with eating disorders live every day.

If I told you this book, and a

hundred more just like it, sit between The Fault in Our Stars and the Twilight series on any standard book shelf, would the passage above be any less worthy of this praise?

When I tell people I want to write young adult literature, they look at me, pityingly; “What, like Twilight?” they respond disbelievingly. “Like John Green?”

(Actually, no, like me. But that’s beside the point.)

This one’s the best: “But, you’re such a good writer, why would you waste your talents on those kinds of books? You should write for adults!”

First of all, I will go to my grave defending John Green’s choices as a writer, and will (like the author himself) admit his flaws without argument: his male protagonists are interchangeable, his metaphors are, at times, forced, and The Fault in Our Stars is, while not the messy, manipulative epitome of the “sick lit” genre its detractors make it out to be, is not his best work. But that doesn’t take away from his overall skills as a writer; if you want to read a good John Green book, go read Looking for Alaska or An Abundance of Katherines.

As for Twilight, I’ve read them; we all read them. And they’re fun.

I’ll go as far as saying that Stephenie Meyer has the potential to author good romance novels, which is a controversial niche genre itself (See

50 Shades of Grey.)

I’ve studied language and literature, both in school and in my own personal reading selections, for years. I also didn’t read very much YA lit in middle school; I went through this inexplicable pro-adult fiction phase where I would only pick up books on the “Recommended by the Staff” table at the front of Borders Books&Music, a store which went out of business around the same time I started to make my own reading decisions. I know good writing when I see it, and it bothers me to hear some of the best books I’ve encountered be written off simply because of the target audience age printed in miniscule letters on the bottom of the back cover. The only noticable difference I’ve observed between the stacks of adult fiction novels and young adult (YA) novels

I’ve sifted through over the years are length, age of main character, and in some cases, vocabulary. Also, the YA novels that I’ve personally encountered tend to be braver in a literary sense: creative structures, poetic language, heavy reliance on anaphoric statements. I’m sure that this exists in straightforward adult literature, but I’ve never seen it myself.

But what I notice is unique about YA books is the difference between the target audience and the actual people who read them.

Instead of hysterical thirteen-yearold girls obsessed with vampires and dystopic societies, I see the neglected, the ignored, the empathetic of all ages. I can connect with these people, and the books we love, because we see ourselves in one another.

WHERE CAN WE GET THE “REAL” NEWS? James Mazarakis Editor-in-Chief

E

ven before the age of mass telecommunications and the Internet, media has come on many platforms. Newspapers, mail and oration have provided means of communication between people, governments, business and the rest of the world; the word of mouth, though, has been here since the beginning of verbal interaction. The problem was, though, that it was seldom practical to present yourself as a primary source to the world... until now.

One may roll his eyes at the idea of gathering news from anywhere besides the typical sources - namely the national news sources, like CNN, FOX, MSNBC, or the BBC. These have been invaluable systems for retrieving reliable information for decades - skilled reporters travel across the world to get the facts and report them to the world.

In the second decade of the 21st century, however, we face an integral challenge: America has a media problem. Certainly, media “blackouts” and corporate lies may be brought for further scrutinization; however, there can be no denying that the national news has been polarizing and generally less attentive to various stories. From hosting controversial spokesmen like Chris Matthews (MSNBC) and Glenn Beck (FOX) to “neglecting” popular issues like the Ferguson protests or the Palestinian side of their war, the American media has proved to have heavy bias and a compromised view of trustworthiness.

Now here’s the curveball: Internet availability is spreading across the world at an alarming rate. According to the World Internet Users Statistics, over 2.8 billion people (about 40% of the world population) currently have access to the internet, a 676.3% increase since 2000 - when the total amount of people in the world who could use the internet barely surpassed today’s American population.

Today, in Hong Kong, about 75% of the population has Internet. Considering there are 50,000 people in the streets protesting, that means there are upwards of 38,000 people coming back home to post pictures, write blog posts, and inform the world about what is going on.

That said, anything on the Internet should be taken with a grain of salt. With an epidemic of “Internet Trolls” and web scams, there’s no way to say with certainty that anything on the Internet is true. On the same hand, you have the infamous social justice bloggers of Tumblr, Reddit and elsewhere, which have been said to take certain issues so far that they become naught in their own righteousness. And besides a few famous authors and YouTubers, core leaders on the Internet are usually secular (focused on one issue) or local.

But the Internet has something that no other media has to the degree it does: accessibility to primary sources. In the past, we have relied on what reporters have found to be true based on research and observation. They have taken advantage of primary sources when they could obtain them, or if people were willing to submit their stories, photos, et al. But on the Internet, anyone involved in a developing story can share intimate knowledge about what goes on during crises like that in Ferguson, or Hong Kong.

The implications of this development are many. Several photos were shared across social

The tweet reads: “Will you please show this to #MikeBrown’s parents &let them know that [Brown] changed the WORLD! #HongKong” [sic].

So sure, the Internet can be unreliable. But the Internet has millions of more people able to upload and confirm information to create a reliable source than any news network present.

When it comes to trolls and fabricators, these groups become a huge minority.

We also have to keep in mind that national news platforms are not objective sources - every news network is its own corporation, running primarily for the sake of making money. Loaded titles, fixations, and dramatizations are galore in every news site, forcing readers to question the information they are given. It is absolutely true, though, that it is much, much harder for a network to outright lie. There is a certain level of credibility they need to retain people’s trust and keep them as loyal readers.

I would not insist on prioritizing the reports on social media over that of CNN or even FOX news, but there is a level of blunt honesty from the Internet that can be a radical threat to the state of national news. It is getting to the point where stories about massive protests and crimes are circulated around Tumblr, Reddit and Twitter weeks before they appear on the national media. This has been true for the protests in Ferguson, LGBT riots in Russia and even the revolution in Ukraine.

To this day, these stories have been underscored by following or subsequent world events on the television screen.

Easy answer: with careful education and fact-checking resources (see the various tools built into Google to give you the exact information you’re looking for) as well as an eye for scams, sure - social media can be one (but not the only) source for genuine, in-depth information.

With the fabric of news networking at risk, internet activism on the rise, and government transparency a growing requirement, is the state of reporting in danger? Or will the Internet remain too sketchy to be relied upon, even as it becomes more accessible? These questions will define the reactions of the international community with each humanist crisis in America and beyond.

ISIS: How Conflict Turned To Terror The Middle East has recently witnessed the rise of a massive new terror group - ISIS. Also known as ISIL, the group plans to bring Islam beyond its current borders, and eventually turn the major nations of the world into “Islamist States”. The group is resorting to violence and terror to achieve its goals; the members recently beheaded four civilians they had captured: two from America, one from England, and one from France.

SIS started as a group to promote the Islamic culture throughout the countries around them, but their leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, has resorted to terror in order to force those they try to influence. The point of the group is to spread Islamic culture and to create more Islamic states.

The group is barbaric in its violence and typically uses gory propaganda, such as the video shared with the US not long ago with our reporters.

ISIS states that their mission is to take down the largest countries and shape them into Islamic states.

In the summer of 1990, the United States first entered the conflict in the Middle East under George H. W. Bush, and has been arguably entangled in the subsequent conflicts and violence ever since. Over the span of now three administrations, combat troops have been deployed, bombs have been dropped, governments have been created and dissolved, and the struggle between various factions has grown ever larger.

After World War II, the US became an international policing force, ensuring that anywhere across the globe, whoever they were fighting would be stopped, from the Russians

during the Cold War to the Terror Groups such as Al-Qaeda in the 21st century.

While this does have some tangible benefits, such as the protection of the innocents who are being subjugated or killed, it carries with it a heavy burden, a target on the back of the US and the ability to drastically affect the world, for better or worse.

That target was hit in the form of the terrorist attacks on 9/11, which singlehandedly led the US to another war in the Middle East, this time under the helm of George W. Bush, Bush Sr.’s son.

Regarded by many as an unfit leader, he blundered into Iraq and Afghanistan trying to catch a single man with an entire invasion force focused on pure and unadulterated fighting.

Later, to keep the US involved, claims of Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq were made, which all later turned out to be false. And even when the goal was seemingly just, to establish a democracy which could act as “a magnet to the Arab world,” the execution or lack there of kept it from being achieved. What was achieved, however, was massive violence and instability in the region that persists today.

THE DISPUTE IN THE MIDDLE EAST Jasper Haag Reporter

O

The formation of ISIS is still unclear - but its implications are many for America’s National Security.

ver the past few months, much of the focus of the US Government and Military has been directed towards a new terror group in Iraq and Syria, ISIS, which stands for The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (other names are ISIL and IS). The primary goal of this group, as indicated by the first part of their name, is to create an Islamic State, or Caliphate, in which their extreme sect of Islam is touted in all corners of their territory.

Originally closely linked to AlQaeda, the group led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was disavowed from what was considered a brutal terrorist organization responsible for countless deaths for being extremely cruel and “notoriously intractable.”

This extreme group has killed thousands of innocents in an attempt to establish the caliphate that it believes should rightfully exist, and has shown no qualms about doing inhumane and barbaric things to those who are captured or who surrender to them.

While it may seem that this terror appeared out of the blue, some experts, such as political commentator Patrick Buchanan, believe that the “United States, which claimed to be battling dictatorship to bring democracy, helped to create the power vacuum these Islamists have moved in to fill.” Throughout all of the years of conflict that the US has been involved in, it has doubtlessly killed thousands of civilians in cases of collateral damage, and have also toppled what little stability the region had in the form of a government, albeit oppressive and tyrannical, but a government nonetheless.

Combined, this provides not only the perfect opportunity for those who desire power to vie for it, but also for those same faction leaders to recruit from within, pointing to the families killed and lives ruined by American bombs. When put to use by a tactician like al-Baghdadi, this can spell disaster for those opposing that faction, and in this case ISIS. While al-Baghdadi was not trained at West Point or in a military

college, he possesses more tactical wherewithal and control than many other organizations. Al-Qaeda, while horrible, never held territory, and thus couldn not generate money to support its cause, relying solely on the support of rich believers in their cause, but ISIS and al-Baghdadi have taken large swaths of oil rich land, oil which they then sell for massive profits, and robbing banks and houses, gaining even more money. This strategy employed by ISIS makes them even more dangerous a threat to the area, as it allows them to keep growing more massive in support and in reach.

The US may try to go into the area and fight to destroy ISIS and its affiliates, but if what Buchanan posited was correct, than another such incursion will likely lead to more ISIS-like groups emerging, providing a constant source of war for the country. Another point in this to consider is that before the US started bombing ISIS, they had made public no ill will for the US, and had attacked the US in no ways. While that does not condone the brutality committed against the people of the lands that they conquered or the beheadings of US reporters Steven Sotloff and James Foley, it does show that they were not established with the main goal being to attack America, bringing into question whether or not it is the duty of the US to intervene in matters that don’t directly affect it.

However, many US citizens argue that the propaganda is an open threat against the country, and that it warrants an attack on ISIS. Even though President Obama has gotten no direct authorization from Congress to attack the group, supporters state that he has every right to attack, and as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said, “[ISIS has] committed horrific acts that threaten the security of the United States and our allies.”

Unlike Al-Qaeda, ISIS has many more networks and a much more steady growth rate because of social media and propaganda. When

9/11 occurred, the world didn’t have nearly as many social resources and abilities to communicate as we do today. The group recruits more and more members who see the videos they send out, and they grow larger every day that goes by.

Whether or not it is the responsibility of the US to fight ISIS in the Middle East, it appears as if that is the way it is going to happen. The US is currently carrying out air, missile, and drone strikes against targets in both Syria and Iraq, and is in the process of recruiting other Arab Nations and Nations from around the world to join together in a coalition and fight the cancer that is ISIS.

United Kingdom Remains United Anna Powers Reporter

n Sept. 17, 2014, Scottish citizens had the opportunity to vote for their independence, and break the 307 years of union between Scotland and Great Britain. In the end, Scotland decided to stay with the United Kingdom meaning the union is staying together.

If Scotland had selected to become independent, Scottish government would have become more responsive and interactive with its citizens, more so than the British Parliament. Some say it would have created a prosperous economy and a better future for the Scots; in addition, if British Prime Minister David Cameron had not already been forced to resign for breaking up a 300 year-old union, he would have needed to form a negotiating side, and the Scottish government would have had to begin the complex process to produce a constitution.

Most importantly, they would have had to negotiate memberships with the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Now that the Scots voted no on independence, not much is really expected to change. Great Britain

and Scotland will continue to work together as they normally do, but it is likely that there will not be another vote on Scotland’s independence for many, many years.

Concerning the rest of the world, some worry that the dissolution of the UK would have affected its financial standing. Many major international businesses based in Scotland feared that independence would bring financial ruin, since they had not decided on what currency they would use. Also, if Scotland had become its own country, the Scottish government would have wanted to remove all nuclear weapons as soon as possible, as the Scottish government says, “it is our firm position that an independent Scotland should not host nuclear weapons and we would only join NATO on that basis.” The EU made it very clear that Scotland would have had to apply to join, just like any other independent nation.

People around the world might wonder why Scotland’s “once in a lifetime opportunity” has gone to waste. In reality, the Scottish people were just more persuaded by the staunch anti-independence arguments, many of which were presented by the Better Together campaign, which stresses the importance of a

unified United Kingdom.

Shortly after the vote to stay together, Alex Salmond, the Scottish first minister and leader of the pro-independence Scottish National Party, announced that he would be resigning from both positions in November.

Prime Minister Cameron said “we hear you,” to all who voted for Scottish independence. He appears to see this as a chance to change

the way people are governed in the United Kingdom.

President Barack Obama praised Scotland’s people for their attempt at democratic process. He stated that, “we have no closer ally than the United Kingdom, and we look forward to continuing our strong and special relationship with all the people of Great Britain and Northern Ireland as we address the challenges facing the world today.”

ISS on Soyuz rockets. With the tenuity of the Russia/USA relationship and more specifically the NASA/ RKA relationship, NASA is looking for alternative methods of transportation, and they are looking to the private sector to step up.

While many companies have technology and services to offer NASA, the two that stick out are a step up from the rest, the first being Boeing, a multinational behemoth of aeronautics. Boeing has been forging relationships with the US government for decades as a contractor, and is among the largest in aircraft manufacturing as well as being a prominent provider of satellites and rockets. The other, SpaceX, is a relative newcomer to the field, having been established in 2002 by Elon Musk, a co-founder of other renowned companies such as Tesla Motors and PayPal for reducing space transportation costs and colonizing Mars. While any normal startup, especially one in such an exacting field, would have nearly no chance of competing with the established businesses, SpaceX has the advantage of being funded by a Billionaire. With money comes not only highly skilled people, but also the ability to work on grand projects

and the wiggle room to innovate..

While both companies are very different, they show similar quality and reliability, and the contract from NASA, which grants Boeing 4.2 Billion dollars and SpaceX 2.6 Billion dollars to provide “space taxis” for NASA astronauts, will surely help to bolster their standings in the world. As industrials analyst Christian Mayes said, “the win in space is important symbolically” for Boeing, but it “is not going to move the needle,” in terms of stock or profit, as space network businesses of the company constitute merely 10 percent of their total revenue. Being a well funded company already, SpaceX is also affected the same way, with Musk noting that “SpaceX is deeply honored by the trust NASA has placed in [it]” and that “it is a vital step in a journey that will ultimately take us to the stars and make humanity a multi-planet species.”

For NASA and for the future of the US in space, this means that they will have the wherewithal to travel to the ISS in the foreseeable future.

It also means that the private sector will be stimulated to advance space travel and technology further, and with the resources and freedom that it inherently has, hopefully faster.

NASA CONTRACTS SPACEX AND BOEING Jasper Haag Reporter

A

s the first and only nation to send people to the Moon, the United States is a veritable juggernaut of all things extraterrestrial, however in recent years they have fallen into line with other modern superpowers. No longer is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) sending people to the Moon, with the end of their Apollo program, the only manned Beyond Low Earth Orbit program it had, coming in 1972. No longer is it even sending astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) with its own transports, now using Russian Soyuz Rockets as the sole means of accessing the multinational Low Earth Orbit research satellite.

Not only must NASA now rely upon the Russian Soyuz rockets for transport to the ISS, they must also pay the Russian government 70 Million dollars per seat on one of them and are subject to the schedule that the Russian launches follow.

This greatly restricts the ability of NASA to send Astronauts to the ISS and to play a larger role in the artificial satellite which they helped to

build.

But compared to the costs associated with NASA maintaining and launching rockets itself, it is paltry pay. A single launch of one of its shuttles was estimated by NASA to be approximately 1.5 Billion dollars, let alone the cost of storing, servicing, and upgrading the shuttles, and hefting a lifetime cost of nearly 200 Billion dollars. With this in mind, it seems reasonable for the US to end the shuttle program and to rely on Russia for transportation, and the symbiotic relationship that NASA and the Russian Federal Space Agency (RKA) share only adds to the reasons for this approach.

However, in light of the recent events in Ukraine and other satellites of the former USSR and the sanctions that the US has placed on Russia as a result, the relationship between the two countries has soured, and so too has the relationship between NASA and the RKA. This has led Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin to say that “[Russia plans] to use the ISS exactly up to 2020,” the agreed upon end date for involvement in the ISS before the recent proposal from the US to extend use until 2024, meaning that the US would be left unable to access the

Malden Recycling Day Tatyanna Cabral Reporter

ecycling is an important action to be taken in protecting the environment but is often overlooked.

Malden is trying to inform its citizens about the necessity of recycling so that residents recycle on a daily basis.

On Saturday Sept. 20, the Department of Public Works (DPW) hosted the event “Malden Recycling Day,” which is held twice a year.

The first recycling day was on May 3 of this year. Solid Waste Inspector, Ron Zanazzo, had been in charge of the recycling program. The event “encourages people to not put recyclable items in the trash,” stated Zanazzo.

Items that were brought to the Department of Public Works included all types of paints, computer parts, tires and much more. To

prepare for the event, “calls to the vendors [had to made],” explained Zanazzo. Zanazzo and Officer Peg MacDonald described the event as “green,” “great for the environment,” and “great for community service.”

“Malden Recycling Day” had

been featured in one of Malden’s local newspapers and was put on the DPW’s Facebook and Twitter pages, resulting in, as MacDonald described it, a “greater turnout [than was expected].”

All of the people who helped with “Malden Recycling Day” are in agreement that they would like for this event to happen more than twice a year. Zanazzo pointed out that this event used to happen “four times a year, but then the city did not have enough money for that to happen.”

Next year, those associated with the event hope to get even more people to come and recycle their household items that are no longer needed. “Malden Recycling Day” benefits the planet while also bringing the community together.

usic is a passion for many people, including a variety of Malden High School’s students who participate in pep band. The band’s main goal this year is to bring a great energy to the crowd at football games, present their passion to their community, and make it their best year possible.

Erin Mazza-O’Brien, the newest MHS band teacher and is experiencing her first year in the band program at MHS as well. MazzaO’Brien was not certain about the theme for this year’s band, but her ultimate choice would be to rebuild

and refresh. Though Mazza-O’Brien is looking forward to many things this year, she is mostly looking forward to seeing the band come back strong this year, both proud and accomplishing the goals they have set.

The band has many goals this year such as trying to make it to the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association (MICCA). Last year, they scored a bronze, which sets this year’s expectations much higher. In addition to this, they also want to recruit people. Junior trombone player, Stephen LaFauci, explains, “There is no hiding that the band is shrinking in numbers. That only makes it harder for everyone who is still in the band. With more members, the

band will not only look better, but it will sound bigger and fuller.”

Mazza-O’Brien also mentioned that “[she] loves working at Malden High so far and it has been a great experience for [her].” Not only is she looking forward to work with the students at MHS, but the students are excited to work with her.

LaFauci says, “[he] really like[s] Ms. Mazza. She’s young, energetic and is full of ideas. She knows what she is talking about and [he] thinks she is a great teacher. [He is] look forward to having her for the rest of the year.” LaFauci added, “there is not a single band class where someone is not making [him] laugh.” This year is sure to be another success for the band.

History and Psychology Teacher Duncan MacLaury

M

alden High School welcomes one of its newest addition to the staff, world history and psychology teacher, Duncan MacLaury.

MacLaury grew up in New York but he moved to Boston where he attended Tufts University, majoring in history.

He loves reading, and traditionally re-reads The Lord of The Rings, or The Hobbit every year. He also describes himself as someone who is outgoing and loves to meet people as well as learn about them.

As an undergraduate, MacLaury attended an education class at Tufts University. Fellow history teacher Jonathan Copithorne who also teaches at MHS was one of MacLaury’s classmates. Copithorne stated that MacLaury was “very bright,” and described MacLaury as “confident” because he was unafraid to raise his hand, even though he was the only student under 21 at that time.

While studying at Tufts University, MacLaury majored in United States History. His interest in the subject grew after he attended a class on the Black Panther Party.The class gave him a different perspective on the importance of the subject.

The professors at Tufts positively influenced MacLaury and acted as role models to him. Their interactions with their students has been admirable to MacLaury.

In the future, MacLaury hopes be as good of a parent as his were, and raise his children similar to how he was raised. People such as Hannah Hart, a YouTube sensation, inspire MacLaury with their passions.

Before becoming a high school teacher, MacLaury was a student teacher at Dorchester High School.

MacLaury loves interacting with all the students, and is fascinated by the 130 students who he can talk to about history and psychology in his classes.

The social studies department has been very welcoming and helped him settle in. MacLaury hopes to “do the best [he] can with what [he has], then build on that next year”.

Enthusiastic Newcomers at MHS Roberto De Oliviera Contributing Senior Felicia Fallano Reporter

F

ormer student teacher Amy Cianci is continuing her teaching experience at Malden High School.

Cianci returned this year to teach chemistry courses, which include two honors classes and three college preparation classes. At a young age, her interest in science developed because her grandfather, an engineer, educated her about science, which prompted her teaching career.

While attending high school in Topsfield, Massachusetts, Cianci enjoyed playing soccer, swimming and tennis and still plays them in her free time. She continued her interest in the sciences and after her graduation, Cianci ventured off to College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, where she majored in chemistry. After her time at Holy Cross, Cianci was offered a job in a BioTech Lab named Stemgent where she worked with regenerative medicine, which is medicine that deals with the process of replacing or engineering human

chemistry teacher Amy Cianci brings her decorated past to students at MHS cells, tissue or organs. Cianci also worked at Boston’s Children’s Hospital and volunteered to spend time with patients at the hospital in the evenings.

When Cianci realized that she was unfulfilled with lab work, she decided to pursue teaching. At Boston University, Cianci received her masters in arts and teaching. She found her time at Boston University enriching because it was a big change that offered many oppor-

tunities. From there, she began her teaching career in MHS as a student teacher for Phuong Ho, and spent the final months of the last school year filling in for Meaghann Galdos.

Cianci mentioned that her student teaching experience was the reason why she loves MHS. She described that “everyone, students and teachers, was proud of being a part of the MHS community”. This sense of community reminded her of her own high school in Topsfield.

She had a great time as a student teacher, and is excited for the upcoming school year.

Principal Dana Brown commented that he believes Cianci to be “caring, very smart, and likes young people.” He added, “she did an excellent job filling in last year and we felt she deserved a chance as a full time teacher.” In addition, sophomore Alinny DeAndrade stated that she “enjoys [her] class,” and is, “looking forward to chemistry class this year.”

As a MHS teacher, Cianci finds it important that students understand how chemistry is relevant to life and to have a solid scientific education.

Her interests, however, do not only range in chemistry. She also enjoys baking because it involves chemistry, running and spending time with her friends and family. This year, she is also advising the Asian Culture Club with another chemistry teacher, Katherine Haskell, which she is very excited about. These diverse interests prove Cianci to be a great addition to the MHS community.

T

his year, Malden High School is welcoming Adrienne D’Agostino, the newest addition to the Italian department. It is her first year teaching at a high school, but she is adjusting to the new atmosphere. Before D’agostino came to MHS, she taught at Wilmington Middle School, a nursery school, and was a student teacher at an elementary school in Revere. In total, D’Agostino has been teaching for two years.

D’agostino graduated from Winthrop High School, and later graduated from University of Massachusetts Amherst where she double majored in Italian and History.

She wanted to become a high school teacher because she believes that “it [is] the best age to teach foreign languages.”

In her classroom, D’agostino has students working in groups because she believes that it is a more effective way of learning. Sophomore Josh Simon commented that “[D’Agostino’s] class has been fun.

She really knows what she is talking about.” Simon added that she “makes things interesting.”

Learning about the history of Italy is a big component in D’Agostino’s class. Her students are excited and looking forward to learning Italian. D’Agostino gained an immense amount of knowledge of the Italian culture from her many visits to Italy. She had spent a semester of college there and went numerous other times with friends and family.

Outside of Malden High School, D’Agostino participates in zumba classes, and enjoys to ski and camp.

D’Agostino advises students to “pay attention, take good notes, and ask lots of questions.” Though D’agostino is still getting lost around the hallways of MHS, she looks forward to teaching and sharing her knowledge with others.

New Teacher Rebecca Corcoran brings excitement to MHS history students

ebecca Corcoran grew up in the town of Norfolk, Massachusetts.

She graduated in 2006 from King Philip Regional High School then enrolled into Boston University, where she spent four years studying and majoring in International Relations, primarily International Order.

From a young age, Corcoran had a passion for learning about different countries and cultures. This caused her fascination for learning about the interactions of countries in college. She was especially interested in topics regarding serious global issues due to the differences between the solutions and methods proposed and executed.

Corcoran’s path towards becoming a teacher began in her senior year of college when she interned for a model United Nations organization in Boston. After graduating high school, the model UN coordinator from her internship offered her a job. She got to visit several schools, receiving the opportunity to work in

different history classes and engage the students in them. Because “that was [her] favorite part,” she was inspired to go back to school and earn her Masters Degree in education.

This is Corcoran’s first year at Malden High School as a social studies teacher. However, Corcoran has worked at MHS for about four years as the model UN coordinator with junior classes through her old job. Michael Lightbody, another social studies teacher, had the chance to work with her for a few years during the time she was a Model

UN director. He stated that Corcoran was a “great help and resource” to both students and teachers alike.

Her personal goals as a teacher involve getting to know her students, and helping them grow and develop throughout the year. “Overall,” she added, “[her] major goal is to make [her] students excited about history.” She acknowledges that history might not be the most thrilling subject for most kids, but she would like to change that.

Ola Kordowska hopes to enlighten students with postive attitude toward math Ana Kerr Reporter

la Kordowska may be new to the math department, but she is not new to Malden High School.

Kordowska went from being a paraprofessional to a substitute math teacher for Cara Joyce, then back to paraprofessional when Joyce returned from maternity leave.

Luckily, “the school had an opening for Kordowska, which she [fits] very nicely into because she loves kids and math, ” commented Principal Dana Brown. Kordowska gushes, that “[she] absolutely loves it.” She feels that, “there is a really strong sense of community, everyone helps one another,” and that, “the teachers have been absolutely awesome, they’re such a huge help.”

Before Kordowska even stepped foot into MHS, she went to Melrose High School. After high school, Kordowska “went to several colleges, such as University of Massachusetts Amherst, Suffolk University and Boston University and now [she’s] at Salem State University.”

She is currently majoring in education at Salem State. Kordowska has also majored in economics and history at UMass, and also has a business degree from Suffolk.

Teaching math is not the only thing Kordowska loves to do. Kordowska also enjoys to, “hike, swim,

garden during the summer time and talk about [her] dog who [she] is obsessed with.” Math has become an important part of her life; her inspiration to begin teaching it came from, “several math teachers in high school, [she] specifically remember[s] [that] were role models for [her]. And it was just sort of their energy and their positive attitude and their passion for it that really resonated with [her].”

Kordowska also feels very passionately about math and the joys of learning it. “Math is like a puzzle,” she explained; “[she loves] that feeling when it finally clicks, and you finally have figured it out.” That it why she loves teaching math to kids so much. “[She thinks] it’s fun to solve different problems, and [she] think[s] its great when kids get satis-

faction from solving a problem they had difficulty with.”

Brown agrees that Kordowska is the right woman for the job, as he loves the fact that she is, “very hardworking, wants to learn, and she loves Malden.” Even his first impression if her was that she was going to be a, “strong teacher.”

Although Kordowksa is excited for the future, she’s not exactly sure what she wants to do next. “Well, [she] just got this job,” she states thoughtfully, “which is such a big accomplishment.”

However, while not completely sure of any one thing she thinks her “next accomplishment will be to master teaching.” While it is unclear what lies ahead for Kordowska, it is hoped that she will teach at MHS for many years to come.

Even more so, she also must deal with the students’ preconceptions about history and what it is. She comments that it can be difficult working against its stereotypes because the subject is often received as “boring” and “irrelevant.”

Corcoran’s interests include international travel and foreign languages. Aside from traveling in the United States, she also visited places such as Canada and Bermuda. Her love for traveling was influenced from her visit to China right after college. In the near future, she plans to fly to Europe with friends.

Formally, she has studied Spanish, French and Mandarin Chinese in college while informally she has studied Korean and Japanese.

Her favorite language, even though “[she is] least fluent by a long shot” she admits, would be Mandarin.

She has hopes to soon create an after school model UN club for any students willing to becoming involved and participate in it.

Her enduring positivity will continue to be endlessly inspiring, and the impact she had on the city of Malden will remain present for years to come.

“To me, Karina Moreira was a shy, unassuming young girl. She loved makeup, jewelry and fashion, but she didn't brag about what she could do or create, or how she looked. She was humbled by my compliments and those of others. She was Chic by Karina but she was just using the gifts that God had given her. It was about God and others, never about her.

What a life. Not, what a death.

What...a...life! Do not think for one minute that Karina was who she was because of cancer. Karina was going to impact the world no matter what happened to her. I saw it with my own eyes, and heard it with my own ears, and felt it in my own heart. She was special.”

Summer Search 2014

Summer Search is a program for low-income teenagers with the mission to help “transform what [the students] believe is possible for themselves and develop the skills they need to become college-educated leaders who give back to their families and communities,” informed guidance counselor and referral partner Erin Craven.

The Summer Search program is a two-year leadership and mentor program. It looks for students with resilience, altruism, and determination. Each student involved in the program is assigned a mentor that they are required to meet with weekly.

The program sends the students off on three-week long trips that generally are in the wilderness. Students may travel within the states or have the opportunity to travel internationally. Other students visit college campuses and attend classes there. College trips are about double the time of a normal three-week trip.

Author Book Talk: Boston in the Golden Age of Spiritualism Megan Downer Reporter

O

n Thursday, October 2, 2014, there was an author book talk event held at the Malden Public Library. Social historian and author of the new book Boston in the Golden Age of Spiritualism: Seances, Mediums, and Immortality, Dee Morris traveled from her home of Medford to discuss the ideas and beliefs presented in her book.

Upon entering a person would first notice the picture being projected in the center of the room. The picture was of what the world normally thinks of as a spiritualist and medium: a man with a cloth around his head hovering over a glowing crystal ball. Author Dee Morris expressed with certainty that the picture was in fact, not a spiritualist - a spiritualist is someone who believes or religiously practices the professed communication with spirits of the dead, this is especially practiced through mediums.

Morris explained that “a lot of reformists were spiritualists, but more spiritualists were reformists.” During the Golden Age of Spiritualism in Boston, talked about in Morris’s book, a lot of the spiritualists were also abolitionists and were, according to Morris, “not as afraid of death” as a normal living person. A spiritualist’s beliefs bring great hope for something good to come after death.

From the start of the Civil War to the early twentieth century Boston flourished with spiritualism. Through seances and public meetings, people had claimed that they had received messages from spirits and could continue to gather messages. Many made a living by exploring and practices their beliefs even more, they worked as mediums. The medium business started out as a clean and genuine work. Eventually, people started realizing they could make a lot of money

unior Patricia Luong is one of many Summer Search students at Malden High School. Over the summer, Luong went on a three week canoeing trip in Maine in North Woods Canoe, with the Chewonki camp.

Over the time she spent outdoors, Luong discovered untouched leadership skills. The trip helped her undergo “a lot of personal growth,” stated Luong. She spent three weeks with “a group of strangers from all over the world and from various backgrounds.” Together, they all learned how to overcome adversity.

Luong’s experience holds “many unforgettable memories and lessons.” She described her experience as a “once in a life time opportunity” in which Luong “met some of the greatest people” that became her “closest friends.”

The program provided Luong with an opportunity to “reflect on [herself] and to grow as a person.” Luong recommends that “anyone who is interested in travel” to apply his sophomore year.

The frauds’ businesses flourished just as the genuine mediums’ business did.

The famous illusionist Harry Houdini had a great interest in spiritualism. Morris said, “he really wanted to believe in [spiritualism]”.

Houdini’s urge to believe motivated him to visit several different mediums, in his day. The only issue there was that Houdini was an illusionist.

Whenever Houdini attended a session with a medium, he was always able to point out his tricks.

Houdini shut down a lot of mediums all over with his keen eye and knowledge of illusion. One medium greeted Houdini with a guarantee that she was in fact, the real deal; however, after the meeting was over, to his dismay, he had to shut her down for being a fraud.

Fraud mediums had something special included in their job: a box. A box had three sides and was usually pushed up against a wall. At a certain point in the session, the medium would enter the box and close a curtain to conceal herself. After laying in the box the medium would summon spirits and the dead loved ones of people would walk out of the box to have a brief interaction with their supposed family. The spirits that exited the box were actors hired to perform during each session.

Dee Morris has done a lot of research on all of these topics. Morris has had first hand experiences with mediums. She described her book as an "introduction" to the topic and is a good start to the world of spiritualism.

enior Nico Quesada Nylen also took part in the summer search program over the summer. Quesada Nylen ventured to Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs in upstate New York. He stayed there for five weeks where he studied Anthropology and College Writing.

The trip exposed Quesada Nylen to a whole new lifestyle, an “independent environment,” as he described it. Quesada Nylen had to make “choices [he] usually would not have.”

Quesada Nylen quickly noticed that the college assignments he received were “very different” compared to his usual high school work. Quesada Nylen found that “the way you dress, or the way you speak, or the way you look” along with financial differences, affect “how people interact with you.”

The program allowed Quesada Nylen to form “irreplaceable bonds with people [he] will never forget.” Summer Search trips bring students from different places together where unforgettable memories are made and a greater sense of self is discovered.

Introducing This Year’s CLass Officers Class of 2015: Preparing for their Last Year E

ntering their last year at Malden High School, the senior class is preparing themselves for prom, the senior barbeque, graduation and more.

The class of 2015 has welcomed previous vice president and current Blue and Gold member Julie Lam as president. Vice President Josh Cronin believes that Lam will, “help guide [their class] in the right direction.”

Similar to the junior class,

the seniors also find it difficult in recruiting volunteers. Lam explained that the hardest part of fundraising is “finding people to commit to help.”

Council Leader Kaitlyn Weng is most excited about the Mr. MHS event, similar to a pageant that including MHS’s senior boys in different competitions.

The seniors are working towards making their last year one to remember. Cronin mentioned that

he enjoys helping in planning their prom because they are, “shaping one of the most memorable nights of high school.” Lam hopes to be able to reduce the prices on not only prom tickets but also the senior barbeque as well as the fee for caps and gowns for graduation.

Overall, Lam wishes to have “everyone enjoy themselves before going off to college.”

Class of 2016: Excited for Upcoming Projects

he Class of 2016 is looking forward to an important year filled with important upcoming fundraisers.

Class president Samantha Forestier mentioned that one of her goals this year is to “have a successful Junior Varieties Show.”

Forestier not only wants to raise more funds for her class, but also bring her fellow classmates together while fundraising.

The officers are expecting most of their funds to come from Junior Varieties due to its previous success for past junior classes. The event generally brings in a helpful sum of money to cover class expenses, including prom and graduation gear. Forestier stated that the show “is the most exciting thing [she is] looking forward to this year.”

vice president Cassandra Reyes, who has held her position since freshmen year, expressed her enjoyment in “being a part of the leadership of [her class] and seeing how ... everyone [comes] together.” Even though JV’s is a big event that they are looking forward to, Reyes stated her main goal is to “have more people involved in [the class’s] fundraisers.”

he class of 2017 has many ideas not only for their sophomore year of high school, but their following years of high school to come. Vice president Rachel Tran informed that “ [she] would like to create a solid foundation of funds for the future events.” Tran also expressed the importance for

the class to come together. “Ultimately [the class of 2017] share[s] the same goals and will achieve them... together. Tran’s goal is to, “unite [the] class and create four great years.”

In addition, the class of 2017’s council’s main focus is to raise money for class events. President

Alansky Ulysee’s explained that “there is no easy part in being president.” The class of 2017 looks to raise money in a way that will be enjoyable. Though scarce in funds, the officers are looking forward to creating a memorable year for the class of 2017.

Autumn Candle Holders Karina Matos Reporter

Supplies Needed:

-Two Small glass bowls -Orange (2 different shades) and Black Acrylic Paint -1 sponge brush -1 regular paint brush -Leaf/Halloween stencils (print out) -Scissors -Tape -Tarp (to put on the ground while painting) -Paper Plate -Pin/Toothpick

Step 1: Create Your Stencils

First print out your leaf and Halloween stencil. Cut out the stencils with the paper still on the inside.

Then tape them , with rolled up tape on the back of the stencil, to the glass bowl with the Halloween stencil on one glass bowl, and the leaf stencils on the other.

Step 2: Painting the Candle Holders Autumn Candle Holder

Lay tarp down so you can start painting. For the fall/leaf candle holder, take the orange paints and squirt two piles of paint on a paper plate.

Next, dab your sponge brush in one of the orange paints and start dabbing it on the outside of the glass, and only the outside.

Evenly distribute the two shades on the jar, and try to not completely mix them.

Leave to dry for about fifteen minutes.

Halloween Candle Holder

Take the black paint and squirt some on a paper plate.

Take your regular brush, and paint the black all over the outside of the glass, and only the outside.

Paint over the stencil, and again, The black paint should be very dark, with no spots that the paint is thin. If the paint looks thin, do a second coat.

Leave to dry for about fifteen minutes.

Autumn Activities Leila Greige Reporter 1. Drink lots of hot chocolate; everyone loves hot chocolate.

Autumn weather is the perfect time to relax and get cozy with a nice, warm cup of hot chocolate and extra marshmallows.

2. Go apple or pumpkin picking. Fall is really the only season when you can pick good red and green apples and the best time for a sweet pumpkin pie. Get started at 89 Pleasant St. South, South Natick, MA 01760.

3. Rake up leaf after leaf in one massive pile and jump in them after you’re all done!

4. Do a walk for a good cause.

There are many upcoming walks to be a part of this October such as the ALS society walk on October 25th at DCR’s Carson Beach - Mother’s Rest South Boston, MA. The walk starts at 11:00 am and has a distance of 3 miles.

5. Spend some time with your family and friends.

Step 3: The finished product

After the paint has dried, remove the stencils from the glass bowls.

With your pin, take the sharp end and slowly scratch off the paint you don’t want to fix the shape, you can do this with a toothpick too.

If there is a place where the paint messed up, then touch up the bowl with the right color paint.

After that dries, turn off the lights, put a candle in, light it, and enjoy your Fall/Halloween candle holder!

Dear Nedlam, Even though it’s the beginning of the school year I’m super busy. How do I make time for everything, with classes and sports and clubs? Not to mention that I want to hang out with friends and obviously spend some time with my own family. There isn’t enough time in the day!!!

-Busy and Tired Dear Busy and Tired, I know how you feel! Sometimes life can get too busy, and it’s hard when you want to give your all at everything you do. Luckily there are a lot of things you can do to make this less of an issue. First of all, be organized! A few quick things you can do to stay organized and make your day easier is laying out your school clothes the night before, putting things in the right section of your binder when you get them, or maybe, if you really have a lot you need to do or remember, creating a checklist. Another way to maximize time is to map out a general schedule of your day. Doing this will help you to see when you have some time for yourself, or to spend with your family and friends. If a sport or any other extracurricular is too much for you to handle and gets in the way of your homework, it could be a good decision to stop doing that activity.

Another important aspect to staying on top of your schedule and having energy is living a healthy lifestyle. That means eating a healthy breakfast, drinking lots of water, and exercising. If anything in particular is taking a toll on your life, you should also consider seeing a guidance counselor to talk about ways to find and create free time in your life.

Try to give yourself a break! Don’t stress yourself out about needing to be a part of tons of extracurriculars to look good on a college applications, and if you get one bad grade on a test, just study harder next time and make up the bad grade. Remember that the past is the past! Do whatever is best for you, not what you feel obligated or pressured to do. Lastly, if it’s just one particular day, or week, you feel especially busy and tired, have a “me” day over the weekend to recharge yourself for the coming week and as a reward for pushing through! GOLDEN TORnADOES TOUCH Down The Malden High School Golden Tornadoes begin the season on a strong note, being undefeated, with a record of 5-0-0. The team could be on the road to Gillette Stadium.

F

or the first time in 24 years, the Malden High School football team stands at the start of their season undefeated with a record of 5-0. The team is being led by head coach Joseph Pappagallo and this year’s senior captains Isaac Bethea, Jarad Accardi, Anthony Boulay and Joshua Bessey.

With talent stretching among both the offensive and defensive sides of the team, the boys are more than likely to have a successful season. Accardi expresses that “for [the team] to keep winning games [they] need to keep working harder and harder every day in practice and just keep playing [their] hearts out every game.”

Still early into the season, the team has defeated Methuen with a final score of 14-10; the Oliver Ames Tigers, who were ranked 18th in the state before facing MHS, with a final score of 27-15; and Revere, with a final score of 14-7. To add onto their undefeated record, the boys faced Malden Catholic High School, a game that attracted city-wide attention, on Sept. 26th, 2014, with a final score of 40-21.

On Oct. 3rd, 2014, the boys continued their winning streak by defeating Somerville, one of their Greater Boston League rivals, with a final score of 35-14. Sophomore Marvens Fedna had highlight plays, scoring four touchdowns. This pink out GBL game was dedicated to Karina Moreira, a sophomore who passed away after battling cancer for three years on Oct. 2, 2014. The MHS Malden Against Cancer Club hosted the game with all proceeds going to Moreira’s family.

Fellow student athletes, parents, faculty and more have all been showing their tremendous support for the boys at home games, filling the bleachers at MacDonald Stadium. The momentum from the crowd and overwhelming cheers surely assure the team that their school and city is behind them throughout this exciting season.

The efforts and successes of the football team are not going without notice. With a visit from former Patriots linebacker Andre Tippett, the football players and cheerleaders were called to the high school gymnasium on Sept. 23rd, 2014, to support Coach Pappagallo in his naming of that week’s New England Patriots High School Coach of the Week.

Having this be one of the best starts to the season in years, Bethea sees “dedication [as] the biggest

improvement” in this year’s team, adding that “everyone shows up to get better.” Bonded by the common desire to strive for greatness and have successful turnouts at both practice and the games, Bethea seems to be achieving his goal for the team, which is to “come together as a family and to play [their] full potential.”

Junior running back Danley Exilhomme expresses his goal for the team to be “to make a run in the playoffs and [for the team] to no longer be considered an underdog.” Exilhomme spent a part of his summer playing for the United States U17 National Football Team in Maryland, along with Fedna and junior James Knox; all three of these MHS football players had the privilege of playing for the U.S. team this summer.

With all of the players on the team aiming high and achieving their own personal goals, it is important for them to maintain a shared common goal in order to have a successful season for the team as a whole. Exilhomme says that the boys “don’t care about who’s making touchdowns...all

[they] care about is the win at the end of the day.” The excessive effort and success that has shown in these early season games by all Malden players on the field surely supports Exilhomme’s statement.

Next, Catholic Memorial will face the boys on their home turf on Oct. 17, 2014. Until then, they will continue training mentally and

physically in order to continue having successful turnouts for the rest of the season. The boys are determined to make a name for themselves this year by working together, “because together is when [they] are at [their] best as a team,” states Bethea.

Under the guidance of coaches and captains, junior Lincoln Ibanda states that the team’s exceptional performances at the start of this season have been achieved by “staying focused on what the goal is and that is to make some noise in the playoffs.”

For these high schoolers, football is truly more than a sport. With the help of their teammates and coaches, all of the boys are using the passion they carry in their hearts for the game to put their effort into every play of the game. With the start they are having, opponents of the Golden Tornadoes should take them everything but lightly.

CHEERING INTO A NEW SEASON Lucia Quesada Nylen Head of Sports

T

he Malden High School cheerleading team has had a very successful start to this fall season. Lead by head coach Diane Buonopane and senior captains Olivia Verdone and Rebecca McCabe, and junior candidate Santina Solis, the girls are heading in the right direction.

With an amazing turnout of over 65 girls showing up to tryouts in late August, Buonopane explained how “[she and the other coaches] picked 40 talented and motivated girls between varsity and junior varsity.” When compared to previous seasons, Verdone stated how “[many of the girls] have cheered with each other before, [therefore] having developed a bond with [one another].” In addition to the numerous returning veterans who “bring a lot a experience and have more drive than ever” explained Buonopane, the various new girls add to the team.

Solis stated that the team has been on a “bumpy path because of various changes that needed to be done to adjust routines”, but the girls have the drive needed to face adversity. The challenges coming throughout the season are pushing the girls to perform their best.

A shared and common goal throughout the team is to make it to the state tournament, and to bring a title home to MHS. Buonopane hopes for the varsity team to compete in November and “hopefully move on to the the Regional Tournament.” “Our goal is to come together as a team and do the best we can and perform hard at our competitions” stated Solis.

The girls are training harder than ever, preparing to execute their best at every performance. With high hopes for this season, the team continues to improve with intentions to better with each and every practice and competition.

T

he Malden Girls Varsity Volleyball Team is starting off the season strong and hoping to become GBL Champions this year.

Led by coach and MHS guidance counselor Matthew Sadowski, the girls are feeling confident in themselves this season. Sadowski has been coaching girls volleyball for 4 years now and he feels confident that the girls will qualify for the state tournaments this year.

He knows that the girls are determined to practice hard and work on their communication to plow through the other teams.

Sadowski had played volleyball during high school and college and has developed a passion for the sport which is why he decided to take up coaching it.

He appreciates this year’s team commitment to the sport, their teamwork, their hard work, and their great attitude. There are still some things that the team needs to work on such as communication, serving, and passing the ball to

others. He feel that there are some very strong players on the team like seniors Kaitlyn Weng and Aryzona MacDonald for defense, junior Brianna Grant as setter, senior Diamond Jones for points, and junior Victoria Tortora as blocker.

He has set up goals for his team to improve their skills and to win the GBL for Malden.

Weng tells newer players to “never give up, always work hard, and to work for what [they] want because nothing is... free.” Weng is confident that the team will make it to the State tournaments and become GBL Champions. She enjoys volleyball because of the stressfree atmosphere and the fact that she can spend extra time with her friends. She also feels that her team is more of a big family that always stick together, even when they lose a game. Weng will make the most of this school year because it is her last year here at Malden High School.

Jones wants the team to improve in their skills like passing and serving so they can later become GBL Champs. Jones herself wants

to improve on her passing skills even though she says that she will probably never be able to. When asked what her favorite thing about volleyball is, she responded,” The game itself.” Last year, Jones says that everyone was shy and not so motivated, but this year she says that everyone is very motivated to become GBL Champions. She says that the players on the team believe in each other and believe that they could do better.

The girls spend lots of time practicing their skill sets before game to help improve their setting, blocking, passing, and serving.

They are really determined to become champions because last year was not a good season for them.

They reflect on their past mistakes to better improve themselves so they can make it to States this year.

They’re confident that they’re going to do the best that they possibly can this year as opposed to last year. We wish the volleyball team good luck on their journey to the state tournaments and representing Malden when they become the GBL Champions.

Getting Into The Swing of Things Tenzin Dorjee Reporter

A

s the season rolls in, the Malden High School Varsity golf team enters a new season led by returning now-senior captains Tristar To and Blue & Gold member Piero Pocobene. Coaching the sport of “honor and integrity” once more is Richard Malatesta.

This year’s “team is looking especially good,” citing “new enthusiastic and a lot a returning players who are all ready to win,”

according to Malatesta. Coach Malatesta admits that the loss of “five veteran players has hurt [them] a little bit, but like To, he says that there are “some [players] coming up and they’re playing well.” To be able to lead such a team for the third year in a row, To exclaims how much of “an amazing honor and privilege” it is to work with the team.

Malatesta divulges that as always, the goal is “to make the state tournament, but even more than that, our primary goal is to have students enjoy golf and have it be a game for

a lifetime.” These sentiments are echoed by captain To as he says that “the team goal is to have fun bring back a GBL championship [win].”

Throughout his years as a Gold Tornado golfer, To has become a prime example of Malatesta’s primary goal of having golf becoming “a game for a lifetime” as when asked what golf mean to him, without hesitation, To stated “golf to [him] is a lifestyle and a reference point,” as it his way to “have fun and relieve stress,” and “even meet new people.”

Tornado golfers are going 3-4-1.

MHS Golf has two wins against Everett High School and one against Medford High School. Malden has also amassed 2 losses against Somerville High School, one against Medford, and another with Lynn Classical High School. There was also a tie with Medford, a match that ended 36-36. With the record not so great so far, the team works harder each day with co-captains To & Pocobene to improve their game, and their love of the game.

Fighting For The Win Maria Da Silva Reporter

T

his fall, the Malden High School girls field hockey team is working hard to grow as a team, on and off the field. A primary goal for senior captain Robyn Santo is to “improve endurance levels and offensive skills.” Along with that, a personal goal the whole team can agree on is maintaining the close relationship with all of the players and motivating each other to get better.

The girls have a very close relationship, and that helps them push each other on the field.

The MHS field hockey team won their game against Salem with a 5-0 victory. Goals were scored by seniors Casey Arsenault, Haley Hoffman and captain Jillian Powers, in addition to juniors Megan Gilligan

and Terrica Dang. Their defense and goalie, junior Katie Howe, played a vital role in preventing the Witches from scoring against them.

The team has mostly agreed that they have improved greatly since the start of the season. The beginning was said to be difficult because it was hard to get everyone on the same page and the communication was weak; however, they have been working on it and ever since they have been scoring and getting stronger. The girls enjoy experiencing the “face-paced action,” and their coach, Kimberly Barber, enjoys assisting the girls and watching them grow just as much.

Coach Barber and her team bonds greatly and being in that fun and comfortable environment has proved to improve their focus in the

Their record is not where they want it to be, although Santo and Powers agree that they are both extremely proud of their team, and are honored to be the captain of a team of “such well-rounded, talented girls.”

In a recent game, the girls unfortunately lost 5-1 to Tewksbury, though they believe that they are progressively growing as a team and their skill is getting notably better.

As Coach Barber tells the players, “baby steps, keep with it, and never give up.”

Both Santo and Barber believe that the team’s persistence and special bond sets them apart from other teams. The girls have learned, through each other, to never quit and to always use their aggression

on the field in a positive way.

Ever since their game against Melrose, which they lost but scored their first goal of the season, the girls’ overall moods have brightened and the game was considered the turning point of their season.

The game motivated them to work hard, which lead to their first win against Salem.

As a team, the field hockey girls will not give up until they are where they want to be. Even though they do not qualify for states with their record, they continue to work hard and aspire to win more games this season. As Santo states, they are “inspired by their desire to win.” The coaches and teammates motivate each other as a whole to grow little by little, together.

Boys Cross COuntry: 3.1 Miles to The Finish Line

ven after a senior runner broke his ankle, the boys cross country team proved to be a formidable force on the road to GBL’s.

On their winning game against Medford on Sept. 23, senior Jonathan Ye fractured his knee two hundred meters before the end of the race.

Despite this, Ye and the team beat Medford “convincingly,” according to coach David Londino.

With successful victories against Somerville and Medford,

Malden High School’s boys cross country team is in good shape and ready to work their hardest to attain the title of Greater Boston League champions.

Senior captain Nahom Ghile was outscored by his Somerville opponent, but attained a safe second place while running a great race at an outstanding speed.

Ghile was followed by Angus Mo, whose season has also been bright and positive. Junior Jonathan

Solomon was right behind Mo taking fourth place, and Senior captain Jonathan Ye figured in the scorings coming in fifth place. Also, Junior Jackie Wang figured, obtaining sixth place.

Victories against Medford were highlights for both the girls and boys team. Continuing his outstanding season, Ghile scored first place, followed

by Mo in second place and Solomon in third. Wang

attained fourth place, and Senior Blue and Gold member Jonathan DeCicco later scored coming in seventh place.

Although the season has come to an end early for Ye, the dedication of the team shows throughout the season, and the love they have for each other is easily seen.

Next the boys team will run against Everett with the girls. Londino comments that they have “done well in the league,” but the “true test” will be at states. “We will see how much they develop,” he says.

Girls Cross Country: Determined to Make Fourth GBL’s Candela Diaz Reporter

he Malden High School girls cross country team is back in action, and ready to defend their Greater Boston League title. Returning this season with returning runners alongside a lot of new faces are all striving for one common goal: their fourth consecutive GBL title. With a record of 2-0, the girls are looking great so far being led by captains senior Victoria Hannafin and juniors Gillian Willcox and Deborah Kibazo.

To many of the new runners, the atmosphere and concept of being on the team can be hard to adapt

to. “The first two weeks are the hardest, but then it gets easier.” says Hannafin. “You just gotta stick with it.. it pays off.”

Willcox took first place in the meet against Somerville on Sept.

17. Other important contributors against Somerville were Kibazo taking third place, and right behind her was Hannafin taking fourth, allowing sophomore Phuong Nguyen to take fifth place.

Kibazo took first place against Medford, followed by Hannafin, and although Willcox was “nervous for the race” just like she is for any other race, she took a strong third place. Senior Helen Chin came in sixth place, and right behind her was Nguyen.

“The girls have been GBL champions three years in a row, so [they] are hoping to get the fourth title, and [they] are also hoping to have a good show in states,” says Hannafin.

Every athlete can agree that being part of a team is more than just showing up to practices and games, but rather bonding together and creating a family. Kibazo describes the team as a “family” that is really close. Hannafin added that “the atmosphere of the team” brings joy to the team. “ You know somebody is always there,” and that is a great feeling for Hannafin.

The track team’s next meet will be against Everett, where they will need a win to achieve their goal and become GBL champions for the fourth time in a row.

girls soccer: determined to succeed Meghan Yip Reporter

A

group keen on unity and endurance, the girls varsity soccer team is starting this season with a positive mindset. As the season is kicking into action, the girls are ready to amp up their game. Despite not making it to states last year, they are committed and determined to not only achieve that goal this season, but to improve their team as a whole.

Their dedication and tenacity is proven by senior captain Betty Yacsavilca, in which asked what were the team’s goals, responded with, “To work better together. I know that we have potential to work together because we can do so much.

I know we can make it to states this year.” Her great love for the sport motivates her to aim higher every game, carrying her through previous rough patches.

The girls are recovering from their losses of both games and players from the previous season.

Not only are they learning to work without the four graduated players no longer on the team, they are striving for improvement more than anything. Engrossed in optimism, the team is ready to turn over a new leaf and work on their weaknesses.

“Communication is key,” fellow senior captain Samantha Drapinski remarks as both a team and personal goal. “[We] need to learn to communicate better on the field.”

The team is led by coach Rick Caceda, who has been coaching the varsity team for two seasons. He is avid in sharing his knowledge with the girls and refining their skills.

What sets apart the team from others is their ever-present bond, essentially described as a “second family” by both Yacsavilca and Drapinski.

“They’re a tight unit,” Caceda adds. “They’re all really good friends and the more seasoned players actually take the younger players under their wing. There’s good leadership.”

As for advice to newer players, according to Caceda, the key to being successful at soccer is to “always play with confidence. It takes you far.” From Drapinski, “I always tell the girls, it used to be my quote to get everyone on the team pumped up, ‘No matter if you get skinned knees or elbowed, it’s always worth to score a spectacular goal.’”

Whether the team reaches their goal of making it to state, the unbelievable amount of dedication and work the team has put into their games make it evident that this team is unlike any other at Malden High. As competitive as the games get, the girls constantly remind each other to have fun no matter what. We wish this team the best of luck for the rest of the season.

On the game played on Oct. 3, 2014, the girls played against Lynn Classical in honor of Karina Moreira, a sophomore who passed away on Oct. 2, 2014. The girls played with black armbands on their left arm to show their condolences to Moreira’s family. On Oct. 24, 2014, the girls will play their pink out game against Triton, in support of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The girls plan on continuing to train vigorously with hopes of having a successful turnout for the rest of the season.

W

ith the blow of a whistle, the Malden High School Boys Soccer team hit the ground running and do not have intentions of slowing down anytime soon. Starting the season off with an undefeated record of 8-0-1, they only need to win one more game to qualify for the state tournament for the third straight year. Head coach Jeremiah Smith returns for his 11th year as varsity coach, alongside senior captains Felipe Calad, Vinicius Silva and Blue and Gold member Julio Da Silva.

MHS has defeated Methuen, Lawrence, East Boston, Melrose, Everett, Medford, Lowell and last year’s Division One North Champions, Somerville, who had eliminated MHS from the semi-finals of the 2013 state tournament. Outscoring the other teams 24-2 during this season so far, with six goals apiece are Da Silva and Calad, followed by sophomore Felipe Cypriano with four goals. MHS’ one tie came against Brookline in a well-played game on both sides of the field by both teams ending in with a score of 0-0. Whereas the highest scoring game they have played was against Lawrence, winning 6-0 being led by

Da Silva, who scored four goals, as well as Calad and sophomore Josh Crespo both with one goal.

The team is run by 11 returning senior players, along with a talented underclassmen coming off the bench. Giving the team a variety of ages and players, along with some new faces.

Senior Mark Ortiz has had seven shutouts already this season and is a key factor to the team’s success as well as the defense including seniors Anthony Caceda, Gabriel Tiago, Silva, Matt Silva and junior Mateo Ruperti. Ortiz stated that “the defense is strong this year and without them, the team would fall apart. They know how to play together. If [they] continue to play the way [they] are, [they] should have no problem making it to the state tournament.”

With their season starting off on a high note, MHS is now ranked 17 in the state and with more wins to come, that ranking is likely to improve. The team is also number one in the Greater Boston League with a 3-0 record; winning the GBL for the second time ever in MHS history looks promising. The last time they won the GBL was in 2006 when Da Silva’s and Cypriano’s brothers were on the team. This season has a lot in store for the team as they continue to make history for MHS.
