he weather is starting to cool down which means autumn is in the air and fall sports are back. This season, the Malden High School girls soccer team is putting through a lot of effort to do well.

This year is slowly changing from the last. Senior captain Bestine Cong says “We’re actually starting to win games which wasn’t happening last year so that’s a major improvement.” Even if they do not win a game, they always better their record with the team. “Right now for this program it’s not about wins.

It’s more about how are we playing.

Are we playing with structure? Are

we making games tough for our opponents? The answer is yes,” added varsity coach Rick Caceda.

There is also a freshman team this year which is new to the MHS team. The varsity, junior-varsity, and freshman coaches are all new too.

Caceda stated that “It feels great [to be a new coach]. I’ve been around the program for years. To now be in charge of a great bunch of girls and hopefully lead them to success is a challenge I’m more than willing to take on.”

our years ago today, I was trying to figure out how on earth was I going to survive high school, and four years from today, I am probably going to be saying how much I want to go back. I know that you have probably heard this from almost every adult in your life, but time truly does fly. This article isn’t going to be about cliche sayings and how their awkward generalness proves to be true in almost every facet of life because, in all honesty, who wants to read about that? I would much rather discuss the scary truth of life almost every senior is facing right now; getting older.

I look at little kids today with so much awe in their natural energized and outgoing spirits and personalities. Talking to young children really opens our eyes, in a way, to understand what it felt like when we were that young and wanted to be where we are today. I find it hilarious and inspiring when I talk to a little kid and ask them if they are excited about anything. Their response, as expected, would be, “I can’t wait to get older and have a car,” or “I can’t wait to go to work every day,” and my all-time favorite “I’m almost a whole 2 hands old.” Talking to them as they express the things they are excited about or hope to achieve in life is kind of like a breath of fresh air that I know everyone needs from time to time.

Along with this, little kids wake up every morning wondering what new thing they will find out from the day. Weather it be going to the library and reading a book on bugs or going out with their mom or dad to shop, little kids take every opportunity they have and run with it, always wanting to learn something new. I feel like this is something that also gets lost in getting older because along with not letting go or forgetting about our passions, we should still be able to find it within ourselves to want to excel and exceed not worrying about breaking from the familiar and wanting to embrace the unknown. In getting older, it becomes more challenging wanting to break from the tedious routine we find ourselves in on a daily basis because what we have is safe and secure. However, in remembering our dreams and our passions, there has to be parts of us that are willing to take the risks we once may have thought were crazy ideas because those risks may turn into meaningful experiences.

Now, being a senior in high school, the definition of my year just turned into one big deadline. Between college applications, SAT test dates and possible in-

terviews, everything about the college process is very overwhelming as you all probably know by now. In dealing with the countless essays that have to be written, and trying to make sure you can remember the 50+ usernames and passwords that you have for all of these “college” websites, I find myself often losing sight of what is still yet to come. Sometimes I wish I was as carefree as a young child because they are so content with life, and they have their imaginations and dreams, which makes them inevitably look forward to whatever is going to happen next. As little kids have all these ideas bouncing around inside their minds, they probably don’t even consider half of the worries I have because they are truly just so passionate and excited about the future. As twisted as this may sound, I feel like we really have to look up to little kids and remember to get excited about things.

Yes, the college process is overwhelming, and yes, we will all probably feel at some point in time that we will just never get there. As overwhelming as all this seems, we still need to find it in ourselves to think about and get excited for our future. Even though what little kids aspire for is what we are all dreading someday like waking up every morning and working from 9-5, or making those monthly car payments that we will all have to deal with, there are still so many things to look forward to. We can take the same excitement little kids embody and get excited for things like hey, I am going to be 18 by the end of the month so I can vote! Or even, getting into college and possibly studying abroad and taking a picture next to some cool animal in Costa Rica.

All of the exciting things that are to come can often times be overlooked during high school between tests, projects and just being a teenager. The more stressful variables there are in our lives, the more important it becomes for all of us to remember that once upon a time, we may all have wanted to be princesses, or astronauts or even the next president; more importantly, it becomes more valuable for us to hold onto our dreams and know that they are never out of reach.

A television series, in many cases, is more than a pastime - it’s an experience. But all good things come to an end. Such as it happens for these two shows, Breaking Bad and Glee, which are going through two different endings: the first being a literal conclusion and the latter being the death of a vital actor.

Behind the scenes, we say goodbye to Dexter, and to Matt Smith, who plays the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor in BBC’s Doctor Who. As viewers, it is important to embrace these changes as best as we can. For shows to continue, or retain their legacy, you must never forget about them. Things never end in the world of television; their legacy is continued in various media forms -- and most importantly, your mind.

Breaking Up With Breaking Bad

n Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, after five years, AMC’s Breaking Bad came to an end. As an avid fan, I’m heartbroken, confused and I can’t shake the feeling that I’m waiting for the next season to start. I’m not ready to accept that my favorite show is over forever.

The pilot episode of Breaking Bad aired on January 20, 2008, introducing Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher already struggling for money, who is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. With medical bills quickly piling up, White, his pregnant wife and his teenage son are unable to make end’s meet. White begins to worry how his family will be able to survive financially after his death, so he contacts one of his former students, Jesse Pinkman,

and with White’s chemistry knowledge and Pinkman’s knowledge of “the streets,” they begin cooking and distributing methamphetamine around New Mexico.

Meanwhile, as White and Pinkman’s product begins spreading around the area, White’s brother-in-

Luckily, AMC announced that in the near future, they will be airing the pilot episode of a Breaking Bad spinoff, Better Call Saul, which will go to show what happened to White and Pinkman’s lawyer, Saul Goodman, after he escaped the drug trade drama. AMC is yet to announce an exact date for Goodman’s spinoff, but no matter how far away the air date is, at least Breaking Bad’s ending isn’t all that bad after all.

“We're all here for the same reason--because we want to be good at something.”

n Oct. 10, 2013, I said goodbye to a very old friend.

With the death of actor Cory Monteith this past July, the writers of the Fox television ode to the modern show choir, Glee, were forced to do the unthinkable: crafting the death of one of their most popular original characters. Known by many names - Gleek, Frankenteen, one half of the dynamic duo known as Finchel, or, the title of his memorial episode, The Quarterback - Finn Hudson was the very core of Glee.

What is so tragically unique about Finn’s death is that the fans know this is not what creator Ryan Murphy intended for his beloved series. Just weeks prior to his death, Monteith was enthusing about his fellow cast members and voicing his impatience to get back to filming.

When the fans say their farewells to Finn, they are also saying their farewells to Monteith.

From the series premiere in May 2009 to the very last episode Monteith appeared in, Finn Hudson was a pivotal character on the show. From reluctant bystander of his bullying teammates to defier of high school social norms to undi-

rected glee club assistant, Finn was the glue that held the ragtag New Directions show choir together. He was the one who could not only successfully navigate the haves and the have-nots of grotesquely judgemental William McKinley High School, but manage to create lasting friendships between them, all while performing unforgettable song covers.

Not only was Finn the first football player in the glee club, he inspired a few of his teammates to join as well, setting a positive example at WMHS. In the pilot, when Finn stands up to the football team and rescues a fellow glee club member from their constant abuse, he makes the life-changing decision to rejoin a failing glee club.

“I’m not afraid of being called a loser,” he tells them proudly, He represented the very heart “because that’s what I am.”

In that moment, Finn set “Glee” of the show; going against the grain and expressing yourself the way you apart from its competitors in the want to, not the way your friends or television world; he gave us somefamily or school or society tells you one any disenfranchised kid could

root for, to identify with and to point to and say, “That’s who I want to be like.” He was, in the very essence of the word, The Quarterback.

Some fans have pledged to boycott a Glee without Finn, but would Monteith have wanted that?

Reading through such comments on the blogosphere is upsetting to me, as a diehard fan since the show’s inception, but they also bring back a memory from season four.

The glee club’s just suffered a crushing defeat, resulting in the loss of their rehearsal space and any ounce of respect they may have gained amongst the student body. Finn, recently graduated and trying his hand at directing the club as opposed to singing in it, gathers them in the parking lot.

“I’ll be here, ready to rehearse, and I hope you will, too,” he tells the downtrodden group. “Because if you don’t, I think you’re going to regret missing that opportunity for the rest of your lives.”

I would advise any and all Glee fans to take his advice. I know I will.

Government? What government?

The reason for the latest government shutdown, and the stupidity behind it.

he government shutdown may seem scary to some, but why?

There are no zombies dragging themselves down the streets of our nation’s capital. There are no government officials being fired from their positions without rhyme or reason. And there is certainly no shutdown of the military or postal service. So why are people so afraid of an event that they know next to nothing about?

The answer lies in the blatant fact that many Americans do not know the actual cause of the shutdown, and instead are lingering on the word “shutdown." Yes, the government is in a state of nationwide shutdown, but this has happened before.

President Ronald Reagan was in office when the government was in this same state over six times.

The core cause of the shutdown lies in Washington, D.C, where the feud over the Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare"), has reached epic proportions.

At the time of the shutdown, the House was controlled by the Republican party, whose overwhelming Tea Party faction is wholly opposed to the funding and overall existence of Obamacare. The Senate, however, is controlled by the opposing Democrats.

The issue of the federal budget has also become a problem, because every budget the Senate tried to pass always gave funding to Obamacare. The next step for the budget would be to move into the House for approval, which it could not find amidst angry Republicans.

Unfortunately, the two warring parties could not find common ground, before the year ended at the stroke of midnight, plunging the country into a period of governmental shutdown.

So, of course, the main thought on most people’s minds is “This is dumb.” But the better thought is, why is this actually “dumb?” For starters, people should consider exactly what government is shutting down.

This isn’t an underdeveloped system of government, or a failing plan that is on the brink of repeal.

This is the United States government, which was built on the foundation of the main idea of liberty.

Our ancestors were able to take this single idea and build it into a very intricate system of government that is effective in massive use with millions of people, forged precisely so that no one branch in the government has too much power over another.

This system was edited numerous times, and has survived the test of time for over 200 years. Yet it still seems that when there's a problem,

instead of fixing it, we just shut down the whole government!

Maybe if the shutdown actually solved the problem in some way, shape or form, it would be acceptable.

However, the shutdown has accomplished only a few things: causing millions of dollars in loss for the U.S., making everyone complain about the government on social networks and the closing of all the national parks. The worst part of it all is that the shutdown itself was not caused by a massive issue, riots in the streets or some revolution. It was caused by the leaders that we, the people, elected to represent us.

So far, these leaders have done just the opposite. Never mind pointing fingers at who to blame, the fact is that the leaders of our national government are acting as if this is a mock government run by third graders. It’s just a sad fact, that our government is really only as good as our leaders are willing to let it be.

Another extremely important factor in this shutdown is who it actually affects. For starters, it does not directly affect those who

actually caused it. The House of Representatives is still getting paid, as are all the other federal figures that could actually solve this problem.

After two weeks of shut down, literally everyone in the U.S. will be affected, as it will send the U.S. into another official recession. This shutdown benefits literally no one, and the longer it lasts, the more problems will begin to pile up.

The U.S gets so much backlash from the global community about corruption and problems within the government solely because it is now, sadly, the truth. People talk about problems in the government like it’s history, but as much as we have gone forward, we have simultaneously taken a step back.

The reason the U.S. has made it this far is because we have had great leaders that believed in doing great things. Leaders that listened to the people and responded to them.

Leaders who fixed something when it was broken rather than threw it away. The U.S. is far from perfect, but it can be much closer if we start to use a very simple skill we have; common sense.

Let's not vote for whoever is in our political party, or looks good or whoever is cool. Let's vote for the candidates that make sense and follow through with what they say.

Let's vote for the men and women that keep their promises or die trying. Let's vote for people who can make being “American” something to be prouder of than anyone in this generation ever has. In short, let's just use that piece of gray matter between our ears, put prejudice aside and make sure the people out there who can fix our government have the power to do so.

Or else: we may have to soon throw it away rather than fix it.

The Syrian Conflict: How It Began Andrew Cogliano Reporter

A

fter a devastating attack by their current president, Bashar al-Assad, Syria is still recovering from the annihilation that chemical warfare has caused. The war has caused thousands of innocent children and women to die. But the question is: should the United States get involved in this dilemma?

President Obama’s speech on Sept. 10, 2013, captured millions of American’s attention. As he commented, the usage of chemical weapons is “a crime against humanity, and a violation of the laws of war.” Many people are aware of the central problem that occurred in Syria, but countless do not know what is happening at this moment involving America.

Centuries of work and dedication have gone by trying to ban chemical weapons. In 1977, the United States Senate approved an international agreement prohibiting the usage of these weapons; it was supported by 198 countries, making up 98% of the world’s population. It all dates back to the treaty between the United States, Russia and Syria on chemical weapons and their use.

As an agreement to drop the weapons, Syria requested these nations stop U.S air strikes, but it seems like al-Assad forgot about this treaty and never really came to an agreement.

On Aug, 21st, 2013, thousands of

people crowded the Syrian hospitals, poisoned by gas.

But after three weeks of continuous fighting over the chemical weapons, Russia and the United States finally came to an agreement.

Syria was “legally obligated” to surrender their weapons, as said by the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power. This agreement was aiming for the destruction of the chemical weapons, as long as the United States and Russia stopped military attack on the country.

President Obama was seeking for support from Americans, believing the only way to assure that al-Assad will stop is by getting involved in this. “If we fail to act, the Assad regime will see no reason to stop using chemical weapons...other tyrants will have no reason to think twice about acquiring poison gas, and using them….it could be easier for terrorist organizations to obtain these weapons, and to use them to attack civilians.” stated Obama.

There is always two sides to an argument. In one hand, people are saying we should not get involved in another country’s business. All the money being spent in overseas wars is needed for purposes like education, and to pay off the debt. As said by dailypress.net, “... put more focus on fixing things in this country instead of using our resources in other parts of the world.” Then there are those that believe in Obama and engage in this never ending war.

A pressing and sensitive topic in world news today, the conflict in Syria has been unavoidable in recent years. But what caused this once proud nation to sink to an all-time low? The answers can be traced to several different causes, in both the past and present.

Dating as far back as 1963, the Syrian civil wars became a nationwide issue when protesters took to the streets as members of the Arab Spring movement in Jan. of 2011. The movement’s sole purpose was to demand the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad, whose family has held the office since 1973.

The protestors also wanted the dissolving of the Ba’ath Party rule, a Leninist group that has controlled the nation alongside al-Assad since 1963.

Conflict arose in Apr. of 2011, the same year the protests began, when the Syrian Army was deployed to quell the uprising. Slowly, the once peaceful protesters became violent after months of military sieges, and eventually transformed into an armed rebellion against the rest of the country.

The civil war has spilled out into other surrounding nations, most notably Russia, but also including Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Iran. Both Russia and Iran have decided to support the Syrian Army and their cause, while Saudi Arabia and Qatar are the main providers of weapons to the rebels.

Many non-Middle Eastern countries, including Russia and China, have become involved in the Syrian conflict in recent years. Russia has, according to BBC officials and world news correspondents,

“[enjoyed] a historically strong, stable, and friendly relationship with Syria,” until the Arab Spring incident arose.

Both countries have embassies within one another, and Syria also houses Russia’s only Mediterranean naval base, its Black Sea fleet. The relationship between both nations has become problematic for those

Photos from wikimedia. wishing to approach the matter directly, mostly due to the fact that Russia stands by Syria, even vowing to “veto any sanctions against the Syrian government” brought before the United Nations Security Council.

A key element of the rebellion was the election of al-Assad in 1973.

BBC News also includes that rioting broke out after “Assad [dropped] the constitutional requirement that the president must be a Muslim.”

The results were increased amounts of riots all over the nation, many of which were suppressed by the iron fist of the military. Until rebellions cease or the government is overthrown, Syria continues to battle both against itself and the world.

An Overview The Politics

yria’s possession of chemical weapons is a very serious matter, and many major countries have strong opinions on what should be done about it. On Sept. 10th, U.S. President Barack Obama postponed a Congress vote on military action in Syria to try and work things out diplomatically.

When President Obama finally decided to take military action after the chemical attack in the Ghouta area of Damascus, Syria’s capital, which left hundreds dead, he tried to get support among leaders at the G20 meeting. G20 is “the premier forum for international cooperation on the most important issues of the global economic and financial agenda” according to its website. Ten members of the G20 joined the US in accusing the Syrian government for carrying out the attack and are calling for a strong international response.

The U.K. is working with the US and France for a U.N resolution for Russia putting Syria’s chemical weapons under international control. Before this, the MP’s in Parliament rejected the idea of military action, although Prime Minister David Cameron announced at the G20 meeting that the UK would be donating £52m ($80m) to help the civilians who were affected by the chemical weapons. mongst all the other forms of combat taking place in Syria, there is one kind of weapon that brought the attention of the rest of the world. This weapon is something known as Sarin Gas, a chemical weapon composed of oxygen, carbon, phosphorus, hydrogen, and fluorine. When separated, these elements are generally harmless, and some even help to create life, like oxygen and hydrogen. When mixed in very specific quantities, however, they create a deadly gas that falls under the category of chemical warfare. For some people who do not know much about chemical warfare, the main question may be “Why is this important?” Well to understand why this weapon has turned so many heads both in the world and

the United Nations, you have to understand it’s complications, and it’s very serious impact.

The use of chemical weapons in general began in the early 1900’s, more specifically at the start of World War I, in 1914. The weapons used then, though not as advanced as today’s chemical arsenal, were still able to amount to nearly 100,000 deaths throughout the course of WWI. Various poisonous gases such as mustard gas (which often left intense burns on the skin), and chlorine gas, were used, and since then the world has been able to bear witness to the devastating effects of chemical weapons. Since WWI, chemical weapons have been responsible for more than 1 million deaths globally. Nearly as soon as they were created, chemical weapons were met with much opposition from public eye.

Considered immoral, it was very apparent these weapons killed

the U.S. to call for international action.

France agreed with the U.S. that force seemed to be necessary, but were willing to wait and see what the U.N. reported about the weapons before military action took place. They were the first to realize there was something going on in Syria, and wanted some sort of strong international response to what was going on.

Russia suggested that potential strikes from the U.S. could be avoided if Syria just gave up their weapons. They suggest that international monitors come in and destroy the weapons, but other countries are unsure of that plan. In an article published by the New York Times President Vladimir Putin said that “a strike would increase violence and unleash a new wave of terrorism.” However, it is proved “beyond doubt” that Mr. Assad had used chemical weapons against his own people. China and Russia both agree that any military action without U.N. approval would be illegal.

Turkey is not happy with Syria and is willing to take action to stop all of this. Turkey was one of the ten at G20 that agreed that some sort of strong response is necessary. Their troops are also on high alert for “threats from Syria.”

Turkey even temporarily shut down it’s boarders when fighting between the rebels and Al-Qaeda broke out.

However, Turkey has also taken in more than 500,000 Syrian refugees, as well as providing shelter for the rebels.

“I see no convincing evidence that this is an imminent threat to the United States of America.” -U.S. Representative Kurt Schrader in mass quantities, and without discrimination. Because of this, chemical weapons are considered Weapons of Mass Destruction, the same weapon category that holds nuclear atom bombs. All of these variables considered, the UN put a ban on chemical weaponry, under the Geneva Protocol. Although this agreement banned the use of any and all chemical weapons, it did not stop the production or stockpiling of said weapons. Because of this, the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) was adopted by the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva on September 3rd in 1992. This called for the disarmament of any and all chemical weapons, that a nation may possess. So, it is no surprise now that when the usage of chemical weapons was detected in Syria, it turned more than a few heads.

For a short time after the attack, it seemed the UN was split on deciding action on what to do on

the Syria issue. Some believed that direct force should be used, others agreed to a more peaceful solution.

The US specifically, backed by a coalition of other countries, suggested a resolution that used military force to rid the word of the weapons, but as one of the world’s biggest powers, Russia, ultimately vetoed. Eventually the UN was able to come to an agreement, and drafted/adopted a resolution that plans to rid Syria of all chemical weapons by mid-2014.

The decision was unanimous, and so all the UN is backing up the idea to rid of these WMD’s. US Secretary of State John Kerry said the UN showed “diplomacy can be so powerful that it can peacefully defuse the worst weapons of war”. This resolution requires that all of Syria cooperates, and that all stockpiles must be abandoned and given full access to experts to disarm. In short, the UN is now working to peacefully settle conflict on Syrian soil.

T

his school year, Malden High School welcomes back the return of the Helping Hands club, along with a new arrival, the Habitat for Humanity club. These two clubs have high hopes for the new year, and are working hard to make their mark on MHS’s students.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps build homes for people in need of proper housing. Junior Amelia Midgley introduced the nationwide club in early September. Midgley came from a different high school where Habitat for Humanity was an active and running club. When arriving at MHS, she saw an opportunity to bring the club to help people in need.

Midgley had taken a course over the summer that taught her exactly how to run the club, and everything she will need to know about the organization. So, along with the help of history teacher Ann Pember as the advisor, they were able to start the club. Currently, Habitat for Humanity members are planning fundraising ideas in order to raise money to buy supplies for building homes.

Helping Hands is “a club that does activites with the East Middlesex ARC.” East Middlesex ARC (EMARC) is a nonprofit organization that helps people with disabilities from over 12 cities in the East Middlesex region and provides free services. The club was first introduced back in 2009 by former MHS student Alana Casey when she was a sophomore. The club was quite popular at MHS, but it had died down last year. The club was advised by Erin Craven since 2009.

However, Blue and Gold member junior Julie Lam, senior Hanh Pham, and MHS graduate Daniel Doza brought the first EMARC dance to Malden as their National Honor Society Project during the summer, which sparked interest in Helping Hands to many new members. The dance “was a success,” and one of the club’s goals this year is to bring another EMARC dance to Malden, this time during the school year.

The Helping Hands not only helps host dances for the students that are a part of the EMARC program, but they also organize the swim clinic located at the YMCA, and MASH Days, which will start in October.

MASH Days are a day once a month where the Helping Hands members do a variety of fun activities with the students. For these days, they work with the MASH Program.

Lam was a member of Helping Hands during her freshman year, and she recalled that it was a big club during that time. It had died down last year though, but after the success of Lam, Pham, and Doza’s NHS project, Pham and Lam brought the club back to MHS, with Erin Craven help as the advisor.

usic brings joy and happiness to many people. It can soothe the mind, or just make people want to dance. This year, the goals of Malden High School’s marching band are to bring up the school spirit, shower and represent the city with amazing performances.

Marching band director, Matthew Tavares, is starting his seventh year directing the MHS marching band. This year he believes that the band will go out with a bang.

He loves working with the young musicians. He said “there is no one better in this entire world than the MHS band students.” Tavares is impressed with how hard they work, and how much effort is put into their work. He knows that these students are very passionate about music. He considers them the “finest people you will ever meet.”

Once the finished set is completed and handed out to the students, it takes them months of practice to get every step right. They practice on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. In total, from when the material is written to when the performance is well done, they have worked over 2,000 hours. Having this much time spent on practicing

The officers are all hardworking and were picked by their student class for their outstanding leadership qualities and outgoing personalities to make their high school year better. Being a part of the student council means contributing ideas, such as fundraisers, which include flea markets, bake sales, dances and much more.

2014

Each officer had their own stories to share about their experiences working in the student council. The Class of 2014 had a lot to say, because president Monica Joseph and other fellow officers have been friends since freshman year. The officers are “usually on the same page about everything,” Joseph stated which as a result “makes everything [they] do for the class easier.” Although it is hard as a president due to the pressure that may come along with it, Joseph accepts the challenge because she, “finds it very rewarding when people trust [her] reasoning.” The student council of 2014 is also under the pressure of raising enough money from senior activities, but they are doing exceptionally well with funding. However, president Joseph explained that, “more [funds] would be good too.” Advisor Jennifer Rogowicz explained that, “the class has become more independent,” and that since sophomore year, “the students have used their own ideas and took leadership in planning events.” The class has become increasingly creative as seen last year with their witty skits for Junior Varieties.

on the same material and knowing what they are best at, Tavares believes that the MHS band is best at playing “different, weird, and quirky” songs. He said that once they know their personality, they will understand what they play best. This year’s music production is called “Out of Darkness.” The show includes the Muse, Pink, the Fray, and Florence and the Machine.

Most band members have been together since fourth grade, but there has been no drum major for the past year. Because of this, it was “difficult for everyone to remain as one unified unit on and off the field,” senior Winnie Chen said.

The band contains more than 60 students, which makes unifying the band even harder. Chen expressed, “although it may be hard work, it is worth it in the end when everything

turns out well.” Freshman Emily Zou said “every time [she hears] a good outcome at the end of practice, [she gets] that our-work-haspaid-off feeling.”

In the competitions they have attended, they have done extraordinarily well. They have won the Visual Effect caption in both shows that they were in this current school year. The Color Guard had also successfully won an award.

In one show, they won best Visual Performance. Tavares said “every year is challenging, because every year has its own unique set of challenges and skill sets.” He is aiming towards satisfying them emotionally rather than score wise. Once they know they can accomplish one thing, they can move on from there.

Tavares feel that “music said

what you will never say out loud, there is no better way to express yourself”, and that is what makes music so deep and interesting. That is what the MHS band does at the football games. They get people’s

hearts racing and its booming brings music all around the city. They bring out people’s spirits, and act as one big voice, as if it is saying that they are one, they are whole, they are Malden.

2015

The Class of 2015 is in the process of organizing several events, such as Junior Varieties, to encourage class involvement. Their numerous fundraisers include the current cookie dough fundraiser, and also “Junior Varieties, which brings in most of the profits for junior year,” said student council advisor Paula Valente. Besides being the advisor, Valente stated that “[she] also enjoys spending time with [all] the students.” Junior year is crucial because it is right before senior year, which requires a lot of funds: prom tickets, graduation, yearbook, among others. According to president Ashmael Brun, “being on the student council is amazing. It teaches you leadership skills and proper time management and you also gain a great sense of confidence.” Fundraising starts with different ideas suggested from each officer, but also other members of the class. Once agreed on one, “[they] go and ask [Principal Dana Brown] what he thinks.” If he agrees that it is a good idea, the officers go ahead with it. Vice president and Blue and Gold member Julie Lam explained that the biggest struggle is “juggling AP classes, sports, clubs while finding [convenient] times to set up meetings.” The Class of 2015 is mostly focused on Junior Varieties because “[it is] the fastest and most efficient way to fundraise,” Lam explained. The main goal for the class officers is to find the “right venue for prom, along with decreasing the prices for other events” that occur during senior year. They also hope to “finish up strong” their senior year.

2016

Although the Class of 2016 had a late start with its student council, this year it has raised nearly $2,000 dollars from successful fundraising. The officers are hoping to make it the best year for everyone and create, “a great high school experience,” according to Joylyn Norris. The officers joined for the sole purpose of making a change and becoming involved in the decisions that will impact their high school experience. There are also a couple of fundraising events that are coming up, such as the Friday Night Rave dance on Oct. 25, 2013. “[It is] best to start now,” said Norris, and “have a solid foundation for what to do to make junior and senior year as easy and as fun as possible.” The only obstacle vice president Cassandra Reyes found was the fear of “how an event will turn out.” However, they have been successful and she is confident that “[her] class will have a good experience” and “[elevated] school spirit.” The class has a lot of potential because of their few, but successful, fundraising events such as the concession stand, flea market, and car washes. President Ricky Cordero is very positive that “[his] class is special and headed for greatness.” Principal Brown was the one to step up for the Class of 2016 when they were ready to begin their journey. Brown explained, “[class fundraisers] were also [successful] thanks to Dorothy Levine and Barbara Scibelli who kept [him] on track.”

arol Mastromauro, the teacher residing in room J272, has won the Model UN Teacher of the Year award. After years of working with the students in her classroom, Mastromauro has molded them into new students, students who have learned skills that apply to outside situations. She is very dedicated to her work in the classroom, and loves seeing how excited the kids get over their assignments.

When Mastromauro found out that she had won the award, “[she] felt humbled; it was like a treat, because [she loves] Model UN.” Mastromauro teaches her students to be global citizens by researching the problem in their assigned country and reacting to it together. Mastromauro encourages her students to use network news, so that they get more and more familiar with the world.

In class, the students run debates on global issues. The students become engaged on a more intellectual level, and that is what Mastromauro likes to see. “It builds their self confidence”, Mastromauro said, “and they go in there thinking they are experts.” Mastromauro believes that programs such as Model UN are so amazing for young students to learn new skills that not only will they use in school, but after school, and after college.

Senior Hanh Pham remembers spending a week of her summer at Harvard University. In seminars, Pham, as well as other students, talked about global issues, such as international relations. They “[learned]

to be more outspoken.” Mastromauro “provides a lot of opportunities” similar to these throughout the year.

During the school year, students are allowed to participate in two Model UN’s events. They had the chance to step out of their comfort zone, all thanks to Mastromauro.

Dana Brown, principal of Malden High School, said that Model UN allows students to create the skills Mastromauro teaches them to use. MHS has been participating in the Model UN of greater Boston organization for multiple years now. They have won many awards, which are located in the different social studies classrooms. Brown, very impressed by Mastromauro’s teaching, describes her as dedicated, committed, and tenacious. “By tenacious, I mean she works really, really hard, and she also expects her students to.”

Gregory Hurley, colleague of Mastromauro since 2004, described her as a “caring, giving, passionate” person. Hurley works himself in the classroom UN organization. The UN classroom units are based mainly on the junior class. When asked what the best part about the UN unit, Hurley quoted, “everything we do is preparing kids for Model UN.” The UN unit in social studies is meant to tap into many skills and the class content. “It helps the students ability to write, speak, and think in a more sophisticated manner.”

Mastromauro, who is a dedicated, passionate woman, pushes herself to help her students, and to provide the skills they need. Senior Raymond Chen appreciated Mastromauro’s endless efforts to “interact with the students,” and help them succeed.

alden has a reputation for being one of, if not the most, culturally diverse cities in the Greater Boston area. Simply walking through Malden, one can see, and hear all of the different cultures that reside within our city, one of the most prominent being the hundreds of Maldonians from Latin countries.

Malden’s Latino Council hosted the city’s first Latin Festival on Friday, Sept. 13, 2013 at the City Hall Plaza. The square featured stalls, music as well as native South American foods.

The idea was brought to the city

by Gloria Salazar from the Malden Latino Group, and the entire festival was funded by sponsors. The intentions of the festival was to display the vibrancy of the Latin Culture in Malden and celebrate diversity.

Jennyfer Cabral, Ward 1 School Committee Member, was

on the planning committee for the event, and states that she hopes to make the festival a “tradition in Malden.” The city was heavily involved; many business owners contributed to making the festival a success.

Mayor Gary Christenson was also an instrumental part of the vent, and contributed heavily, from providing contacts to the Latin Council, to aiding the process of planning for the actual festival.

The first event was a Flag Ceremony, where flags of several different Latin countries were displayed for the audience to see. Other events included dancing, and music performances on the Plaza.

For a first time event, the festival was a success. With one year under its belt, the city of Malden looks forward to the planning and execution of next year’s festival.

Class of 2017 Freshmen Orientation Malden High School says

ith the help of staff and seniors alike, Aug. 28, 2013 welcomed the arrival of many new faces to the student body of Malden High School. Incoming freshmen from all over Malden and other cities arrived to their freshmen orientation, ready to begin their journeys at MHS. Our school is known for its diversity and this did not change with its new arrivals. To many of the freshmen, MHS is either a fresh new start or a place to continue their academic and athletic endeavors.

The new additions walked through the front entrance and into the auditorium, beginning their new experience.

The assembly introduced the students to Principal Dana Brown, and guidance counselors Matthew Sadowski and Heather Northrop.

Sadowski made clear that they are “the people who are responsible for [the freshmen] here today, tomorrow, and in 10 years.” The chorus and band made appearances as well.

Afterwards, class by class, students filed out of the auditorium and to their homeroom where they met new faces and rekindled with familiar ones. In homeroom, students were given a background of the school and its functions by seniors and were given advice.

n its ninth year, the Harvest Moon Festival has become one of Malden’s most important celebrations.

Local businesses, musicians, and guests alike filled up Fellsmere Park on Sept. 4, 2013, bringing along tents, trains, and live horses.

The Harvest Moon Festival has taken place annually for the last eight years, usually hosted by the Oak Grove Improvement Association (OGIA) and the Chinese Culture Connection (CCC). This year, however, the OGIA hosted the festival on its own. The festival celebrates the coming of autumn and the harvest, a recurring theme in many cultures during the fall season. As the actual date of the harvest moon phenomena approaches, this festival celebrates its fruits four days early, bringing together various cultures and making a memorable event for Malden.

With help from Malden Access Television (MATV) and its executive director Ron Cox, various performers were able to perform on stage, with appearances by singers, dancers, and a jazz band.

Those on stage, however, were not the only musically oriented guests at the festival; local radio station 105.7 WROR and the Shen Yun Orchestra also sent representatives to advertise their work. Children could spend their time cruising on a small train ride set up at the side of the pond, or ride horses at the top of the hill. The OGIA set up a pumpkin patch, as they had in the previous years, allowing guests to make art out of pumpkins.

Appearances were made by the Redbones truck, which allowed by passers to sample their own foods, state Senator Catherine Clarke, who is running for Congress, and the CCC, who promoted their Chinese culture programs.

Malden Mayor Gary Christenson was “thrilled” to be present at the festival. He appreciates “events like these that make Malden grow.

Courtney Moore: Expanding her experience Lucia Quesada Nylen Reporter

Senior Courtney Moore broadened her horizon after visiting South Africa for community service. She hopes that anyone who comes across any similar opportunities will not overlook them.

his past summer senior Courtney Moore attended her second Summer Search trip. Moore went to the African Leadership Academy in South Africa as a part of the Global Scholars Program. She took classes in entrepreneurial leadership and African Studies and did community service at a daycare center in an area called Zandspruit.

Last summer Moore traveled with the Outward Bound Philadelphia Center. Moore went “backpacking through the Appalachian Trail on the New Jersey and Pennsylvania sections and canoeing on the Delaware River Gap.” In addition, she went rock climbing and did group challenges. Her favorite memory from the OB trip was when “[her group] reached their second to last destination.” Her group members and her “made the most of out of [ the rainy weather] by playing man hunt.” “That was the night that we bonded the most “Moore explained.

After already attending both trips, in comparison Moore “did not think that [GSP] would be as

impactful as [her] Outward Bound experience”. Her GSP was “absolutely phenomenal and I learned so much about myself there.” Moore explained.

However, “Outward Bound really forces a person to adapt to situations outside of their comfort zones” which is why Moore felt as if her OB trip left more of an impact on her. Both trips were vastly different. Going into her Outward Bound trip, Moore “was more prepared [compared to her GSP] in some ways because [she] is someone that likes outdoor activities like camping and hiking.” In comparison , “when I left for South Africa, it was the first time that I had ever left the country so there was a greater sense of adventure and excitement.”

Moore stated.

To future Summer Searchers, Moore recommends to “keep an open mind about every single experience that they come across.” They must keep in mind that they might not be able to ever experience the opportunities that are given to them on their trips.

Mark Ortiz: from appalachian mountains to new opportunities Cassandra Reyes Reporter

Mark Ortiz began his journey in the Appalachian Mountains this summer, but hopes to further his adventures in a third world country, where he wishes to do a lot of volunteer work.

unior Mark Ortiz spent this past summer in the Appalachian Mountains. The trip was something Ortiz could have never imagined. The three week trip taught Ortiz a lot about himself as an individual.

The moment Ortiz and his group reached the campsite, they began packing hiking backpacks and began hiking right away. The first week consisted of hiking and getting used to daily jobs. The second week of Ortiz’s trip was when they began to do white water canoeing. Ortiz says they spent day one on a lake, day two on a river and day three on the lake. Week three was the busiest for Ortiz and his fellow summer searchers. During that week, they began rock climbing and volunteering at a far.

Very anxious for this upcoming summer, Ortiz hopes to go to a third world country this upcoming summer and do volunteer work. For his next trip, Ortiz hopes to “do something that would benefit others and not just [himself].” Ortiz’s first trip taught him a lot about himself, and now he is looking forward to this upcoming summer to use his skills to give back. For upcoming summer searchers, Ortiz recommends them to challenge themselves and push themselves to try something new and different on their trip.

Ortiz says “it’s a very special opportunity and they should not let it go to waste.”

Megan Huth

M

egan Huth is the new adjustment counselor for Holland house. To clear up any confusion, an adjustment counselor is someone who works with different people in different situations to try and tries to adjust them to the right track.

Huth is a new addition to the school, among many others. A little fun fact about Huth is that she is part Irish, German, Swedish, and Native American. Also, she lives with two roommates, who are her friends.

Since Huth has met so many other personality types, she had a bit of trouble answering the question, “How would you describe your personality?” After thinking for a couple moments, Huth replied “Approachable…friendly…and [she is] very quick to laugh at [herself].” Huth finds herself motivated by free time and thinking about the responsibilities she knows she has.

Huth went to the University of Rochester in New York for her undergraduate school, and went to

Huth, when in college, found herself planning to work in business, where “[she] had a very different vision of what [she] was going to be doing.”

She soon found out that a desk job was not going to be for her, because she enjoyed working with people a lot more, especially teenagers, who she claims to be “fun and different” and have more potential to work with.

“In the Holland House we are very fortunate to have [Huth] as our Adjustment Counselor. She comes to us with a wealth of experience and lots of enthusiasm.” quoted Holland House principal, Marilyn Slattery. They meet every Wednesday to inform each other on the students and some unique problems within the house. “[Huth] knows many of our students already and is looking forward to meeting many more!” quoted by Slattery about Huth.

M

iranda Libkin is starting her opening act at Malden High School. Coming from a background in theatre, she is now debuting as a ninth and eleventh grade honors English teacher at MHS. Overwhelmed at how big the school is, she is relieved that the students and staff are so welcoming and polite, and she feels comfortable asking for help.

Libkin is “excited for the school year and excited to be in Malden.”

She grew up in State College, Pennsylvania and is looking forward to being in the city for a change. After

teaching in Pennsylvania, she has come to MHS with a positive attitude, where she is “having fun everyday.” She “likes the feeling of living in a city” and the dog park, where she often takes her new puppy, Dill, to. Libkin said she named her dog after a character from To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, one of her favorite books.

In high school, Libkin was a part of the Drama Club and grew up taking ballet classes. Originally majoring in acting and minoring in dance at Ithaca College, Libkin came to realize, “[she] was most [herself] when teaching.” According to Libkin, the art of “teaching is similar to theatre. [One has to] learn to hold the attention of a group and tell a story. We do that in English when we

figure out details that make up the stories.” She comes from a family of educators, and is now an educator herself. She attended Pennsylvania State University and earned her masters degree in teaching.

When asked about her reason for choosing Malden, she said, “[she] searched for teaching jobs in the Boston Area online, and found [MHS].” Libkin immediately took a liking to how humorous the interviewers were, such as principal Dana Brown. She is getting use to the schedule, lengths of periods, and teaching both ninth grade and eleventh grade classes. She also taught ninth grade and eleventh grade English last year in a high school in Pennsylvania. Libkin said the easiest part of her job is having fun. She

Huth adjusted her social skills to use for her counseling career. She likes the idea of adjustment counseling because she moved around a lot when she was younger, and has the capability to move on from things.

Huth feels that she can really help adolescents adjust to new situations, because she had to adjust to so much as a child. When speaking on the subject of adolescents, Huth claims the students of Malden High School to be a “very dynamic bunch.” She sees many different faces, and so many different backgrounds.

Since Huth is as new to the school as the freshmen are, she has asked for directions. She said that the MHS students have been the most helpful in that area, and she is not afraid to ask them where to go.

Huth hopes to still be working at MHS in five years, and encourages the students of Holland to stop by and talk. Huth wants to become familiar with more faces and names, and get to know everyone a little better. Huth enjoys her first full-time job as a counselor, and has only been in internships before. Overall, Huth is a brand-new, fresh-out-of-internship counselor that is ready to help.

Sean Walsh, the Head of the English Department, said that Libkin is “very outgoing in class” and that all the potential English teachers that were interviewed were great, but “did not have the qualities that these new English teachers have.” Freshman Leticia Dos Santos commented on how “she is always enthusiastic in class” and how she is “already learning a lot from [Libkin].” When asked if she had any advice for the students of MHS, Libkin replied, “[do not] be afraid to challenge yourself. Outside of your comfort zone is where you will learn most about yourself.”

E

nglish teacher Abbey Dick is among the many new additions to the Malden High School staff this year. Receiving her Bachelor’s degree from Assumption College in Worcester, MA, and her Master’s from Westfield, MA, Dick claims that she knew she wanted to be a teacher as soon as she hit college.

Growing up, Dick had always liked the subject of English, so exploring a career in that area seemed almost natural, however there were a few hurdles that she had to pass before she could completely commit herself to her fondness of English.

Throughout a good part of her life, Dick was passionate about singing. It was something that she loved to do, but she had to give it up in order to pursue her greater interest; English. Dick explained that in order to pursue one, she had to give up the other. She expresses that she was more than willing to give up singing when she realized she wanted to be the “best English major ever.”

Dick claims that the “whole town could probably fit [into MHS].” Going from a miniscule town to a larger school such as MHS overwhelms most people, although it seems that

Dick is transitioning well.

Dick had an easy transition into MHS with the help of the students and faculty as she described the students that she has met as “incredibly friendly and kind.” Although the schedule has taken a bit of getting used to, Dick is convinced that she has the best room in the school, so

needless to say, it balances out.

Within her classroom, Dick is taking a more modern approach to the customary teaching methods with her students. Working towards the final goal of being a paper-free classroom, Dick employs a broad array of technological tools in order to connect with students faster and easier. Some of these tools include her teacher website and even a twitter page, in which she reminds students of the homework she has assigned that day. Her other ultimate goal within her classroom is to have her students writing as much as possible.

Out of all the English arts, writing has always been Dick’s favorite and because of this, it has become her favorite subject to teach. As far as other publications by various authors, Dick is not very big fan of Shakespeare. One of her favorite books includes The Great Gatsby by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald. All and all, MHS seems to be a pretty good fit for Dick, and she seems more than ready to do her part in dishing out her own very special brand of teaching.

Flannel is making a comeback this fall, from oversized button downs to more fitted shirts.

They can be paired over any outfit, or layered under denim jackets and sweaters. Flannel shirts are an easy way to spice up an outfit while staying comfortable. You can find these anywhere, from TJ Maxx to Pacsun.

Boots are in style every fall and can fit everyone’s personal fashion sense. If you enjoy edgy pieces, go for a pair of combat boots or Doc Martens. If you are more girly, a pair of riding boots will go well with any outfit.

You can find these at any store that sells shoes. To dress up your boots and stay extra warm in the cold winter months, add a pair of lacy socks or knit leg warmers underneath, which are easy to find for a low price at Target and Forever 21.

This fall, the military trend is back for the attack: camouflage is huge this season- from backpacks to pants, you will see it everywhere. Military jackets,either oversized with a graphic tee and leggings or cropped with a pair of jeans or a dress, are also in.

Bomber jackets go great over dresses and skirts, but also look great layered with button downs or sweaters. You can always dress vegan if you’re not a fan of real leather.

Beanies are a really easy way to stay warm and cozy while still looking trendy. They come in every pattern and style. You can go for a more affordable option from Forever 21 and H&M or look for a brand like Neff which you can easily find at Urban Outfitters and Newbury Comics.

Leaf It To You: Fall Crafts

A

s the cooler weather sweeps in and summer becomes a distant memory, it is time to start decorating for fall. But who wants to put up the same old decorations?

Rather than buying a traditional orange pumpkin, go for the modern white pumpkin, accenting any room or door stop just right.

Carving is a sure way to spruce up

the pumpkin and give it some edge.

Carving with a knife can be messy and dangerous so as an alternative, use cookie cutters which are precise every time, convenient and much easier to use. Also, instead of placing regular tea light candles inside the jack o’lantern, opt for colored candles for an extra little something to further enhance the pumpkin’s edge.

Prefer an easier way to decorate a pumpkin? Simply use beads, paint, or stencils to add embellishments.

If beading, do not be afraid to create new designs with them such as curving chains. With paint there are

numerous options to choose from, ranging from drawing on your first initial to painting a face to illustrating a scene. When using stencils, either draw right on the pumpkin with them, though the grooves may make it a challenge. If so, trace the stencils on a sheet of paper, cut them out and glue on the pieces.

Another festive decorating idea to easily do yourself is a leaf adorned candle holder. Start off by finding either a mason jar or any other transparent jar laying around.

Next, glue on leaves, preferably store bought so that they last longer and are less flammable than real

ones, to the inside of the jar in any pattern of your choice. Place in a tealight candle. Once lit, the ruby reds, fiery oranges and sunshine yellows from the leaves dance around the room.

Edible decorating ideas include constructing candy corn sculptures. Go freestyle or glue the candies to an object such as a wreath. An even simpler way to incorporate candy for decorations is to place the candy corn or any other candies of your choice in a vase and display it on a table.

it is stained or torn because it adds to the effect of a shark attack. Do not be afraid to use scissors and cut up the shirt a little or add red paint splatters for a greater effect. Write one different day of the week on all seven t-shirts. Cut out a piece of paper that resembles a shark fin, attach a string and wear it as if it were a hat. e bid summer a final adieu and resume back to our studies and routines. With school settling in we can no longer sleep in until noon or go to bed whenever we please. Sleep is slowly becoming something we regularly lack and value more when it comes to school. Loss of sleep often leads to the depletion of grades and makes it more difficult for one to learn efficiently.

Although it seems impossible to gain eight hours of sleep, like doctors recommend, there are ways to ensure that you can make the most of the sleep that you are able to gain. When it comes to your diet, always make sure to eat at least three hours before you go to sleep, but try not to go to bed on an empty stomach in order to avoid getting any stomach aches or cramps.

Ingredients:

2 Cups of milk 2 tablespoons of canned OR 1 teaspoon of Torani Pumpkin Spice Syrup 1 or 2 tablespoons of sugar or sugar substitute 2 tablespoons of vanilla 1/2 teaspoon of pumpkin spice, plus more to garnish 1 or 2 shots of expresso, about 1/4 cups of or 1/2 cup of brewed coffee Whipped Cream

Directions:

Pumpkin spice lattes are a must when it comes to all things fall. It has the perfect blend of warmth and flavor making it perfect for the fall weather.

It is a simple process and is much more flavorful and authentic when made by yourself. To begin, start by gathering all the key ingredients as well as a cooking pot to hold the contents. Start with adding the milk into the pot and then proceed to mix in the canned pumpkin. Once both ingredients are pour together, whisk the contents in order to break the canned pumpkin apart. Slowly add the sugar, vanilla extract, and pumpkin spice with the

mixture and whisk it all together.

Since coffee or espresso is required make sure to brew that separately and add it to the pot when it is ready.

Once all of the pumpkin spice ingredients are in the pot, whisked efficiently, put it on the stove on low heat. When the pumpkin spice turns a light brown shade and is warmed properly you can proceed to pour the contents into a mug.

The next step is optional but for the final touch add whipped cream and a little bit of pumpkin spice sprinkled on the top. You then have yourself a homemade pumpkin spice latte -better than the ones sold in shops!

Directions:

Begin by washing the apples and thoroughly drying them. Proceed by getting a metal cookie tray and placing wax paper on top. Then butter than wax paper so when you put the caramel apples on top they Ingredients: do not stick to the sheet. When the 6 apples 1 bag of individually wrapped apples are completely dry pull the stem by twisting it to loosen it then caramel candy simply pull it out. Afterward you 2 tablespoons of milk place the apple upside down to 1 package of wooden sticks put the wooden stick in the center (that tactic allows the caramel to fall downward and creates less of a mess). After all the apples are fnished, lined up, and place on the tray.

The next step in the process is to begin unwrapping all the caramel pieces and placing them into a small cooking pot. After all the caramel is unwrapped you pour in the milk and place in on the stove on low. Carefully watch the caramel and continue to stir steadily to avoid

burning it. The caramel should take about ten to fifteen minutes to completely melt.

After the caramel is melted quickly place the apples one by one into the caramel and cover the entire surface. Use the wooden stick to guide the caramel over the apple.

Once all the apples are covered in caramel place them back on the tray to let the caramel settle. The caramel apples are then ready to eat.

If you are looking to get creative with this recipe though, you could easily add some extra things to the caramel apples to make them look more festive. In this recipe we added almond joy chocolates and white chocolate chip pieces to the coat of caramel. Any candy can be substituted for those though. The sticky caramel makes a great holding place for the candy and makes it more than an ordinary caramel apple.

he Surface is Microsoft’s latest device and has topped even the iPad mini itself. When it comes to multitasking the Surface does it all. For instance, if you ever wanted to, you could watch movies while doing your homework all at once. Its thin and sleek design makes it very convenient for storing in backpacks or purses and its kickstand makes it perfect for watching videos and reading. in The Surface RT is a great candidate for school because it comes with Microsoft Powerpoint, Word, Excel, Onenote, and Outlook; making it beneficial for both homework and class use. The default save to SkyDrive allows you to conveniently manage all types of documents online, access them on your tablet, and share them with others. Not to mention, it comes with free cloud service with 7GB and, unlike the iPad, the Surface has access to multiple accounts so that the whole family can use it and even have their own personal files saved on their own account.

When it comes to cost the Surface is much cheaper compared to the iPad and other tablet devices. The iPad costs around a whopping $500 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 also costs around $450 whereas the Surface is priced reasonably at $350. Students only want the most affordable accessible electronics when it comes to doing school work and projects so the Surface fits that criteria. When using it, you can choose whether you want to go on the desktop, which acts as a real Windows computer, or on the app list, where you can choose from photos, games, the weather, and many more useful features. With the Surface you can easily hook it up to most printers with no problem and it also has microSD and USB ports; perfect for uploading pictures.

Not only does the Surface have more qualities than the iPad, but it also has more accessible tools which makes it very useful for school, work, or home use. Not to mention that it is perfect for entertainment, since Netflix can be accommodated, which makes it great for travel. If you are a student it is very recommended, from a current High School student, you can use many word programs and it has easy access to gmail and Google Documents If you are looking for a practical and affordable piece of technology the surface is the best choice.

Field Hockey: New Members Bring High Hopes Andrew Cogliano Reporter

W

ith a new school year, brings a new Field Hockey team. The team is being flooded with many different players, widening their skillset in the process. As coach Kimbery Barber states, “only six players are returning to the varsity roster this season,” allowing a brand new squad of athletes to add their strengths to those of the veteran players. The team is led by captains senior Blue and Gold Member Kristen Leonard and senior Julie Bourgea. This means that the returning players now have the added responsibility of bringing the new team together, but Barber isn’t worried, adding that “[the seniors] are really [the] key players.” Since it is only her second year as head coach, Barber admits she “[is] learning too,” but so far, there are no major weaknesses to be detected in the new and improved team.

Just as important as the coach are the players on the team itself, both new and returning. Bourgea is confident in her team, stating that “everyone has different strengths” and that they are “extremely talented”. With approaching games in North Reading and Marblehead next week, Bourgea hopes to “show [the other] teams how good [they]

really are,” and add some wins to the teams record of 0-1-7. Both the coach and captains are happy with many of the new recruits, specifically their new varsity goalie, sophomore Katie Howe, who gives Barber “high hopes for a great season.”

As with most teams, the girls have a strong bond with each other on and off the field. Sophomore Terrica Dang says that “one of our greatest skills is our communication...we just need to put all of our skills together.” Despite their rough start to the season, Dang says that “we pick each other up,” and that her long term goals include “[winning] as many games as I can.”

Barber and Bourgea have both confirmed that the team is working on their offensive lines and becoming more aggressive, with Barber adding “[the players] need to be stronger in the circle…[they are] too nice!” The team also seeks improvement with their stick handling skills, according to Bourgea.

O

ne can say golf is a sport only gentlemen can play, but it is much more. It is a game played with “honor, integrity, and respect,” as senior captain Nick Ward explained.

The sport takes mental and physical effort, focusing on the target and hitting it with the right amount of strength, enough that once it goes, it will enter the hole. The fewer the number of strokes hit by one, the more points received, which gives a better chance of winning. The last Greater Boston League title won by the Malden High School golf team was back in 1981, so Ward’s goal along with the team is aiming to make a “statement this year and bring [MHS] its first golf team GBL since 1981.” Golf is a team sport, but is mostly based on an individual’s effort against his opponent in order to win.

Currently, the golf team is looking better than ever. In its humble beginnings, there were “only five kids on the team.” Now, the roster boasts nineteen-strong. Leading this team are Ward and juniors Piero Pocobene and Tristar To. Each “bring individual strengths to the table,” but most of all, the three display

Comparing years past and now, captain To commented that he felt “that this team has the capability to accomplish things that previous MHS golf teams did not.” As with any sport, the team wishes to “enjoy every moment this season.” The team is aiming high for their title.

The varsity golf team played against Somerville, Cambridge, Medford, and Everett, all of which were played twice, and the Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational High School. The matches were all hard-won. Unfortunately,

their matches against Medford were losses, though they were close.

Somerville was won 41 ½ to 30 ½ and 40 ½ to 31 ½; Cambridge was 38 ½ to 33 ½ and 45 to 27; Everett was 43 ½ to 28 ½; the match against Northeast Metro Tech was 185 to 196 (the lower score won in this case); and the unfortunate matches against longtime rival Medford were 34 to 38 and 31 ½ to 40 ½ . The MHS golf team amassed an impressive 7 wins with only 2 losses throughout the season.

With all the top competitors of the GBL at the tournament, captain Nick Ward described the championship’s matches to have a “completely different feel than a regular match.”

With all the players of the tournament being of top-notch caliber, the winner could have been anyone.

Unfortunately, MHS could not grab the win, but it gained valuable experience. So overall, the season, even with its “ups and downs,” had a sense of satisfaction. MHS is truly proud of its golf team and hopes for its continued success.

Boys Soccer: On the Ball Again Emma Ceplinskas Reporter Candela Diaz Reporter

A

s the leaves change from a lush green to a tinted rusty red, that means it is time to break out the cleats and shin guards because soccer season has begun. Malden High School’s boys soccer team has entered a new season with states and the Greater Boston League (GBL) title in mind. At a current record of 7-4, they are on their way towards another successful season, if not more so.

Ending last season at the first round of states, senior captain Richard Mulo and varsity coach, Jeremiah Smith, are in agreement in their goal to “advance further this year.” The team, however, does not feel pressured to qualify again this season because “[they] have the talent,” commented Mulo, “it is just a matter of pulling out the win.” As for personal goals, junior captain Julio Da Silva hopes to “beat [his] record of 11 goals last year” and become a GBL all-star. With a total of six clean sweeps last season, goalie, junior Mark Ortiz, would like to increase that number.

At a current record of 4-1 in the GBL and three clean sweeps, the team is tackling the competition. After defeating Cambridge, their long time enemy, with a final score of 2-0 on their turf, the team is highly motivated to continue on a winning streak. Another highlight was the competitive game

Following this victory, the team challenged Cambridge Oct. 4, 2013. Reorganizing after Cambridge inched ahead at 0-1 after a penalty kick, the team was able to tie the game at 1-1 after Da Silva assisted Mulo for a goal.

Top scorers this season include Da Silva standing at six goals and six assists, Mulo with eight goals and four assists, and junior Felipe Calad with seven goals and four assists.

Da Silva is motivated by his brother, who won the GBL title in 2006, to continue improving and prove his strength and talent as a player. He and Mulo have a great passion for the game. They love everything about it, even the opponents. “The

harder the better,” described Da Silva because “[he] feel[s] great after winning against tough competition.” But “[he] does not like all the attention on [him]” because it “is all about the team” and their efforts.

“They are willing to give everything they have,” added Mulo. Soccer is not solely about the person with the ball. It is about the other ten players on the field, working together to have victory, the feeling of pride and accomplishment at the sound of the final three whistles.

In contrast to last season, this year there are more underclassmen on the team but there is still an abundance of talent. Mulo believes this season, “the people are more committed because they want to win. [They] are willing to work together to achieve [their] goals.” In addition the team “is more positive

and [they] communicate better,” added Ortiz.

Another change includes the formation of a freshman team, led by coach Robert Navas, which has not been around since 1996. “[The new freshman team] makes the program better,” expressed Smith.

Ortiz advises to, “stay with the team even if [a player] does not get a lot of playing time.” Mulo and Da Silva also encourage the younger players to “always be humble” as well as work hard and listen to the coach.

Many of the players have known each other from Malden Youth Soccer. Mulo added that “[they] like each other apart from just playing the soccer game… [they] are family…[they] are brothers.”

The team has the chemistry, the speed, and the skills to become the ultimate champions.

Goals were scored by freshman Felicia Lombardi, who holds second place for most goals scored in the Greater Boston League, and sophomore Kristina Gilbert. Malden High School’s Varsity Girls Cross Country team is back in action

R

acing their way to the Greater Boston League title for the third consecutive year, Malden High School’s girls cross country team is starting their season off stronger and faster than ever. With a loss of valuable seniors last year, new team members are stepping up to fill their shoes. Cross country coach David Londino says “The girls have picked up where last year’s seniors left off.”

Hardworking and devoted coach Londino feels very, “fortunate to be involved with such great people and a great sport.”

The girls team is now being led by seniors Joviana Morin, Jacqueline Bouley, and junior Victoria Hannafin. Bouley says that it is critical for the captains to be, “helping the team obtain the title by encouraging them all to work together and stay positive.” With the season at it’s peak, the girls hold a record of 4-0, winning the GBL opening and meets against Melrose, Cambridge, Medford and Somerville.

Six days of practice a week, two to three hours a day, and on top of that, study sessions are certainly paying off. On Sep. 18, 2013 the girls cross country team defeated Cambridge, one of their biggest competitors in the league. Placing in the meet was Hannafin (2nd), Morin (3rd), sophomore Gillian Willcox (4th), sophomore Deborah Kibazo (5th), and Bouley (8th). The devo-

tion and passion that the girls have for the sport is incredible. Morin says “[their] dedication to this sport and [their] hunger for the GBL title” assures the girls that a third consecutive win is attainable.

The girls team swept Somerville at their meet on Oct. 2, 2013, the score was 48-15. The meet was led by Hannafin, Morin, Willcox, Kibazo, and senior Cristina DiScipio.

Another GBL title is not stopping the girls from finishing the season strong. With the upcoming GBL closing meet, the girls are still practicing, with hopes to make a good impression as the GBL champs at the final meets.

M

alden High School’s boys cross country team has begun the season with a fantastic start.

They have worked their absolute best during practice to become an outstanding team. The new runners are getting right into the rhythm of constant practicing and working hard. Balancing school and rigorous practices are a lot of work, but they have managed to make the best of their time and get everything done.

As for returning runners, they have no worries, since they have already been through this many times before. Boys cross country coach David Londino says that they “have some very talented runners.” As of now, it looks like it will be a great season for the team.

Even though it is early in the season, senior captain Daniel Gould says that they are “keeping [themselves] healthy”, and he also predicts that this will be a good season. With the incoming freshmen, they could be bringing in some skilled runners, who are there to support their team and are willing to make a difference for the team. By becoming friends and getting to know one another that will benefit them into becom-

ing a better team. They quickly have gotten to know each other, and now can help each other in correcting what they are doing wrong, or give each other tips.

Besides practice, the boys also have to stay in shape and stay healthy. They must eat well on a daily basis. Senior captain David Kibazo feels that “[they’re] doing well, everyone is running strong, and everyone is in good form.” Although the team lost to Cambridge

on Sept. 18 the season has much to go before it ends. With three more competitors left to face in the GBL as well as states and invitationals, the team has a lot to look forward to. The whole team has high hopes for the season, and definitely believe that there is room for improvement in order to fulfill their goals this year.

On Wednesday Oct. 2, 2013 the team had a victorious win against Medford.The first five runners were Gould, Kibazo, junior

Jonathan Ye, senior Claude Bonet, and Angus Mo. The final score was 15-42. Some of the freshmen runners had participated in this meet as well. The first freshman finisher was Stephen Deng. The freshmen are doing well to meet Londino’s expectations. Londino says that there is “definitely room for improvement.”

They will now be working on their speed, their times will be improved just in time for states.

A

nother year, another season, and Malden High School’s varsity volleyball team are bringing back the heat, once again. Last year the team had seen quite a successful season, performing their best in the Greater Boston League. With a fresh new Varsity team both ambitions and pressure are high.

With three years of coaching under his belt the new head volleyball coach, Matthew Sadowski, is excited about the new season and thinks that the team has a pretty good shot of winning the GBL. “The team has room for improvement,” he said, “we lost a lot of seniors, so it’s a pretty new team this year.”

However, although this is his first time coaching varsity, he thinks the team really could succeed. The team, he said, is focusing now on serving, passing, communication, and working together as a team.

“Four things,” he commented, “that all teams, even good ones, need to practice.” Even though having to teach players the game from scratch, since a lot of them had never played before joining, is challenging, Sadowski still describes coaching as “fun” and “exciting.” Although he

Photos by Nick Bramante has played volleyball for quite a long time, in high school and college, he says he is “still learning as a coach and a player.” Hopefully, his experience and knowledge will help lead the team to victory.

Even though it might be quite a challenge to perfect the art of volleyball, Sadowski seems pretty confident in the team’s abilities. Through rigorous training, he claims that the team improves each day of practice.

Despite the setbacks the team has experienced this year in the form of losses, Sadowski still firmly believes that the Varsity has a shot at advancing forward in the ranks of volleyball this year. While the process can vary, a normal day’s practice for the

team, consists of a few very essential parts.

These parts include stretching, passing, serving, honing fast reaction skills, and short but high intensity drills.

These practices are essential gears in the machine that is the varsity volleyball team. All this work payed off in the home game against Everett, in which the varsity team was able to make multiple saving passes and serves, that ultimately ended with MHS’s victo- as both Sadowski and the team keep ry. Hopes remain high for the team, learning, and stay centered.

Cheerleading: A Season full of spirit

F

all is here, indicating the return of MHS’ football team, along with the cheerleading team. This year, the team is bigger and feeling better than ever. The cheerleaders are ready to work hard and cheer enthusiastically, all the way to Greater Boston League Championships (GBLs) and state tournaments.

This year, the team is once again coached by Linden S.T.E.A.M

Academy’s Dana Buonopane. Along with many returning members of last year’s team, there are also 12 new members of the squad, making a total of 20 girls in Varsity and 22 in JV. These 42 were chosen out of 85 girls who had tried out during the beginning of the season. In total, the team had grown, and Buonopane could not be more excited.

From these 12 new members, Buonopane expects “that they’re committed to the team and that they give one hundred percent.”

They will be expected to also learn all of the cheers and dances, overall

totalling to over 30 things for these new members to learn. For returning members, she expects each and every one of them to improve. Last season was a successful season for the team, so this year Buonopane wants them to be “even better than they were last year.”

With the departure of last year’s senior captains Christy Ringdahl, Bianca Scola, and Brianna MichaudSantiago, this year gave room to two new captains: senior Cori Malone and Erin McInnis. Both girls are excited for the new season in their new position as captain, and will be

doing their best to help Buonopane and the other members, especially new members, improve throughout the next few months.

A common goal throughout the entire team is to make it to the state tournaments, along with being able to be the GBL champions this year as well. This year, instead of only the varsity team competing, both JV and Varsity will be in the competitions.

Last year was the beginning of the JV team, so this year will be the first year they will be competing.

Football: Going The Extra Yard MHS qualifies for playoff spot after win against Cambridge Rindge and Latin

W

ith a new fall season comes a new season for the football team here at Malden High School.

With a record of 4-1 the team is in pretty good shape. The wins have been against Malden Catholic, Revere, Somerville, and Cambridge Rindge and Latin and the loss against Methuen. Under great coaching staff, including head coach Anthony Pappagallo and this year’s captains seniors Jensen Ayuk and Matt Delaney, the team is looking forward to a great season.

Losing their first game against Methuen was a tough loss, ending with a final score of 24-20 . However the team managed to bounce back quickly and win their second game of the season to Revere with an amazing score of 29-0 with touchdowns made by senior Raymond Sainristil.

The third game of the season was on Sept. 27, 2013 against Malden Catholic. From the beginning, MHS had an advantage, playing on their home turf, MacDonald Stadium here in Malden. With the stands packed with Malden fans, including fellow classmates, teachers, friends and family, MHS dominated from the beginning. The final score was a spectacular 27-6. Touchdowns were made by Sainristil sophomore Danley Exilhomme, and freshman Marvens Fedna.

On Oct. 4, 2013 MHS traveled to Somerville for their first Greater Boston League (GBL) game, bringing home a win for Malden with a score of 35-15. Touchdowns were made by Sainristil, junior Rakeem Langston, and Fedna. In addition,

key plays were made by sophomore quarterback Andrew Papa, making his first career touchdown throw to senior Kevin Noel.

The team is undergoing changes including adjusting to a new young starting line, as a result of various seniors graduating the team from last year. Along with both captains, sophomores Exilhomme, and Robert Green are on the varsity team. Exilhomme states how “being a sophomore starting on [varsity is great]” he “loves the positive energy and [his] teammates and coaches.”

In addition, Green explained how “it’s a blessing to be able to have the opportunity to start as a sophomore.” The team is currently starting 15 underclassmen. “It requires more coaching and teaching, but they are all talented and we needed to replace a large chunk of talented seniors who departed for the college ranks after last year,” expresses Pappagallo.

In addition to having a new team, there is also another change for the MHS football team. There is a new football playoff system in place for the Greater Boston League (GBL) this year. This system allows the top two teams in the league to automatically qualify, while in comparison to past years, only the top team qualified. “[This change makes the] landscape entirely different than it ever has been [in past years]” explained Pappagallo.

Captain Ayuk states that he “expects to become closer with the team and to improve how they play as a whole and after seeing the results of the past few games MHS can already see improvement with their effort and scores.” The goals of the

team for making the play-offs can soon be accomplished if they keep up the good work and still apply all the effort that they have been showing this season. With scores being more consistent and having big wins, MHS expects to have the Golden Tornado team to proceed with the victories and make the school proud.

In addition to Delaney and Ayuk, senior Keyshawn Bridgeman plays outside linebacker for the team. His goals for the season is “to get to the playoffs.” “The team has improved as a whole defense, offense and special teams” he exclaims, adding that the season is good so far. Bridgeman says they just have to trust the game plan and they have been executing just that.

“The biggest competition I would say is ourselves,” claims Bridgeman.

Even though the year started off a little rough they have been able to

win more games early in the year by wide margins.

“Our goal [as a team] besides winning the GBL championship and upending last year’s state champs, Everett, is to make the playoffs and represent the students of Malden high and residents of Malden in the playoff arena with dignity and pride.” exclaimed Pappagallo.

On Oct.12 MHS beat Cambridge Rindge and Latin with a final score of 35-27. Touchdowns were made by Sainristill, senior Loveng Francois, and Ayuk . This win allows the team to qualify for playoffs. The team hopes to continue and end the season with an outstanding record.

With tough competition ahead, including fellow rival Everett, the MHS Golden Tornadoes improve with both every practice and game, striving for victory.
