The Rockaway Times

Start a mobile block party. Organize your block and make plans to march in the Poseidon Parade on Saturday, September 21. The more participants, the better! Families, kids, all are welcome. Sea monsters, sailors, mermaids, pirates, crustaceans—just think nautical! We like this event so much we’ve become the Official Sponsor. ***** Black Jack (Jackie) Ryan needs your help. The basketball wizard who has entertained Rockaway crowds as part of the Harlem Magic Masters and through solo shows is in need of some medical insurance help. In September, Jack will undergo valve replacement heart surgery for a congenital heart disease. The costs will exceed his insurance coverage. If you

want to help, send a note to: hoopwizard@hotmail.com ***** The 2019 Photo Finals will be at Caracas on August 24. Time TBD. The winner of the $500 Grand Prize will be chosen and short of big, big news, the photo will be that week’s Rockaway Times front page. If one of your photos made the TOP 30 or Honorable Mention, you can come and take it home that day. The photos really hold up in the weather and look good on any wall. For those photos not claimed, they just might end up on the walls of The Rockaway Times office. ***** Lazer Lou writes about the National Grid site (Beach 108-Beach 111) this week, which got us to wondering about the status of the cleanup (to remediate toxicants). The Department of Environmental Conservation tells us: “The cleanup of this site is complete.” Some mumbo-jumbo followed: “Prior to final site closeout, an en-

vironmental easement must be recorded. The Final Engineering Report (FER) and Site Management Plan (SMP) have been submitted and document the work completed, as well as future monitoring obligations.” So, basically, it’s clean and whatever development occurs there cannot upset the remediation. ***** Overheard: The beach was too sandy. Even Rockawayans, infamous for their griping, wouldn’t go there. Then again…. ***** Speaking of griping, we did our fair share about the lousy spring weather. Well, though it was late getting here, summer’s been pretty darn nice. We want that on the record. ***** There will be dancing. The Beach Sessions Dance Series returns to Rockaway on Monday, August 19, and runs through Thursday, August 22. Daily dance classes, open to the public, will take place at the Beach 97th concession.

Most of the classes are late morning or mid-day. You can register at BeachSessionsDanceSeries.com or just drop on by and if your feet can’t help themselves, well, join in. Congratulations to all RB Volleyball Champions. We hate that regular season play is on Wednesday evenings, too late for us to get the results in Thursday’s papers, but we’re thrilled to bring you the final recap, thanks to John Sica. Great photos were submitted by a bunch of talented locals. ***** The Other Times, the New York Times, did a nice feature on “Rockaways’ Cycling Newsman,” Kevin Boyle (he of the real Times) last Friday. It was in the print version on Saturday. Writer Corey Kilgannon did a good job following Boyle by bike and reporting on various encounters. Somehow the part about us having a fully-stocked tiki bar in the office didn’t make the story.
