Rockstock Rocks This Saturday

By Katie McFadden

Another day of surf, skate, shopping and song is ahead! The 13th Annual Rockstock and Barrels Festival is Saturday, June 15 on Beach 90th Street. Saturday is looking good for a day Rockstocked with fun. This annual event started by Steve and Christian Stathis of Boarders Surf Shop and Jimmy Dowd of St. James Clothing, has grown into a can’t-miss early summer event that showcases some of the best things Rockaway has to offer. Now in its 13th year, there will be plenty to celebrate. “It’s our teenager. Rockstock was our grassroots baby and now it’s a teenager,” said Dowd, who spends several months prepar-

ing to make the event a success each year. Saturday will mark International Surfing Day, so it’s only appropriate that the day kicks off with an all-day surfing contest. The Eastern Surfing Association’s contest starts at 8 a.m. on Beach 88th Street. For more info or to sign up, email ny@surfesa. org. In celebration of International Surfing Day, the Surfrider Foundation will also spearhead a beach cleanup from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All are welcome to join in. The elements of the Beach 90th skate park have been re-layered and repaired in time for the event’s skateboard contest, expected to start at around 2 p.m. There will be prizes and giveaways for all. Rockstock wouldn’t be complete without the rock and there will be plenty of it on the Beach 92nd Street Boardwalk. The music starts at 10 a.m. with Joe Caravella of rock band, The Reign. At 11 a.m., Ian of Unysynn will take the stage. Local band, The Ecstatic Madmen, with thei-

rart eclectic indie rock sound, will go on at noon. They’ll be followed by New York-based singer-songwriter, Lili Roquelin at 1 p.m. Prolific songwriter and instrumentalist, Morgan Weidinger, will certainly impress as a one-woman band, when she goes on at 2 p.m. At 3 p.m., Walker Hornung, the man who organizes Rockstock’s music each year through Into the Whip Records, will go on with his band, the Brotherhood of the Grape, but he may also pull out some songs from his Q-South and Kings Heartbeat days. At 4 p.m., Sasha Dobson, whose genres range from rock to jazz to country, will take the stage. Last but not least, local favorites, Indaculture will close out the show starting at 5 p.m. If you can’t catch all the bands, don’t fret. The Rockaway Beach Broadcasting Company will be live streaming the music all day long at www.RBBCradio.com. The fun doesn’t stop on the boardwalk. While the festival ends at 6 p.m., the party will con-

tinue on to the Rockaway Beach Golf Club on Beach 100th Street, where The Skells will perform live. Some new aspects this year include more things to do for the kids. Casey Butler of the Rockaway Mermaid Brigade and face-painting extraordinaire, Rochelle Grubb will be providing activities like arts and crafts, face-painting and more. Also, at 3 p.m., all are encouraged to gather by the music stage, as event officials are going to take a new official Rockstock photo by drone, to showcase the new boardwalk and the big crowds, so the more, the merrier! The event will also include the Red Bull team, giving out free samples, the Queens Library bus and dozens of vendors selling goods that you can’t get anywhere else. No matter what, there will be something for everyone. “This is a family-friendly, free event, so come on out and enjoy,” Dowd said. For more info, head to www. rockstocknyc.net
