HARLEM COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS BRONX World Science Festival Comes to the Bronx

By Howard Giske O n Sunday, February 9 th the World Science Festival came to Bronx Lehman College, at the Apex Center. The free event attracted hundreds of children and their parents who could attend all day from 10 am to 4 pm.

Big signs from the World Science Festival and leading sponsor Con Edison greeted participants, and many took pictures. Inside, families gathered around exhibits. In the exhibit of “Non-Newtonian Fluids,” a thicker fluid of a cornstarch water mixture was on the ground. Children walked quickly, and barely sank in because of the qualities of the fluid under stress. It is sort of like when the ketchup gets stuck Big slinky Pendulums Wheels

in the bottle because too much of it is trying to get out at the same time.

Another science station was called the “Rotation Station.” Participants found out that if they were spinning and they stretched out their arms, they would go slower, because they would have more inertia. People waved spinning bicycle wheels, or spread out whirling discs on inclined planes to show this.

At the station, “Bernouilli’s Principle, Forces and Flights,” giant metal slinky toys and balloons were used to show various effects. At the “Pendulum Exhibit,” very large circular pendulums bumped into each other and people watched as wave motion went through them over a long process that generated interesting patterns. Upstairs there were two virtual reality stations, where children put on headphones and binoculars, and were taking to another place and time. In the Bronx Children’s Museum Exhibit, plastic garbage was re-assembled

as models of fish and animals. At the Bronx Botanical Gardens Exhibit, children wore large posters like their face was in a flower. In a black energy sink hole exhibit, marbles circled around a representation of a sun, like new planets in their orbits.

It was easy to see that with more national input such as a strong push to send astronauts back to the Moon and on to Mars, that children and people in general would be happy to mobilize around science. The next World Science Festival will be in May 2020. For more information, please see worldsciencefestival. com or on Facebook / worldsciencefestival.
