Lady Patriots softball ends Magicians’ unbeaten start in 11-run rally By Julian Cardillo

T

he Revere softball team maintained its upstart character and never-saydie attitude on Monday in a thrilling, come from behind, 6-5 victory over Marblehead at home. “Easily the most exciting game I’ve ever been a part of in my 20 years of coaching softball,” said Patriots coach Joe Ciccarello. “None have ever been this exciting.” Marblehead entered the g a m e u n d e fe a t e d a n d held the lead for most of the game. Meanwhile, the Patriots used freshman Adrianna Fusco as the starting pitcher, as Olivia McManus had to take the game off for a wrist injury. “Fusco had a few tough scrimmages in preseason, but she kept her stuff under control and did very well against Marblehead,” said Ciccarello. “She really held her own.”

Fusco’s performance on the mound – and at the plate – kept Marblehead in striking distance. However, Marblehead had a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Everything seemed lost until that point. “At the bottom of the seventh, I was telling the girls that no one should leave our field until we let them,” Ciccarello said. “Man, did they take those words to heart.” Joli Giuliano started a rally for the ages with a walk . Fusco singled to move Giuliano up; Eve Lescovitz then singled to score Giuliano to make it 5-2. Alexis Iacoviello got on base next to score Fusco and make it 5-3, keeping two runners on base. Victoria Correia, with two strikes, belted a three-run shot off the scoreboard for a 6-5 walk-off victory. “You should have heard the noise that shot made

on the scoreboard,” Ciccarello said. “We were all stunned. Us. The other team. Everyone. It was all over so fast; it’s incredible how fast … they just took heart that we can’t let anyone leave our field until we let them.” Asked why the come back didn’t happen sooner, Ciccarello shrugged. “Marblehead had a good pitcher and we’re a young team,” he said. “It took us a few times around to figure her out, but finally we did.” Revere, who felt this season could go any number of ways after having lost a number of starters to graduation, are now 6-1. They host Winthrop on Friday and then Lynn Classical on Sunday. “Winthrop is always a big rivalry game for us,” said Ciccarello. “They score a ton of runs. We just need to keep them down and pitch strikes at the plate. But we have hot bats going, too.”

Patriots’ baseball team seeks stronger starts after Everett, Marblehead contests By Julian Cardillo

T

he Revere baseball team split its latest two games, flexing its offense on Friday in an 11-3 victory over Everett and suffering an 8-3 defeat to Marblehead on Monday. EJ Leone got the win on the mound against the Crimson Tide, coming on in relief to see out the game. David Guillama went four for four with two RBIs while Zack Furlong was two for four with a home run. “We’ve been doing well on base,” said Revere coach Mike Manning. “We’ve been getting on base at a good clip.” The Marblehead game was closer than the final score sug-

gests, as Revere was down just 4-3 heading into the sixth inning. However, the Magicians opened the game with a four-run lead before the Patriots could reply on the scoreboard. EJ Leone had a double and a single in the game, the only Patriots player to get on base more than once off a hit. “We need to get off to some stronger starts,” said Manning. “We have been a great late-inning team, but sometimes we dig ourselves a hole by that first or second inning, and it’s just hard to keep clawing back when you spot a team a 4-0 lead.” The Patriots play Winthrop on Friday and then play Lynn Classical at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

RHS Sports Round-Up

Lacrosse The Lady Patriots lacrosse team defeated Gloucester, 13-7, on Tuesday. In boys’ action, the Patriots have lost two straight. Revere fell to Malden, 7-6, on Monday and is now 5-3 on the season.

Tennis The girls’ tennis team split its last two contests; the Golden Tornadoes beat Somerville, 3-2, on Tuesday, recovering from a 3-0 loss to Marblehead on Monday.
