Kioussis, defense, lead Revere past Malden By Julian Cardillo
T
he Revere High School football team flexed their defensive muscles last Thursday night, beating Malden, 16-0, for just their second win of the season. Revere’s defense combined for a thorough squelching of the Golden Tornadoes, who entered the game winless on the season and not having scored a single point in their last three games. The Patriots continued Malden’s miserable momentum, coming up with a
blocked punt, four interceptions and a fumble. “Huge,” said Patriots coach Louis Cicatelli. “A huge win for us – our defense was stunning. Honestly, if you look at the scores, our defense has been excellent all season long.” Malden quarterback Jose Monteiro threw an interception to James Kioussis on the first drive of the game. Revere then turned it over on downs, but it only took four offensive plays for Monteiro to throw his second intercep-
tion of the game, this time to Lucas Barbosa. The Golden Tornadoes managed to stop Revere on the ensuing drive, but Malden hardly took over. With just over five minutes left in the half, Malden punted from the 12-yard line, Jimmy Kioussis diving in front of the kicker to block the punt. The play resulted in a safety, giving the Patriots a 2-0 lead. From there, the defense was on cruise control while the offense, eventually, came through.
Running back Darius McNeil, who rushed for 97 yards, scored a touchdown. Zach Furlong recorded a rushing touchdown. McNeil’s touchdown was a direct result of more going right on the defensive side. Revere forced Malden to fumble and made the most of the opportunity, going 79 yards over eight plays. McNeil rushed for 58 of the 79 yards on the drive, including a 41-yard run, before ending with a three-yard touchdown carry to make it, 16-0.
“This was definitely a defensive win,” said Cicatelli. “Our offense needs to get better. It’s kind of been the story of the season … Once you get inside the 40 you have to punch it in. But for us it’s an offside call, a holding call … just little mistakes. You can’t make those mistakes. It’s a young team, but they’ve got to learn.” Cicatelli singled out Edeh Ballo for his performance and said the victory last Thursday was huge, particularly with a game coming up on Thanksgiving against Winthrop.
