The Alcove At 400 square feet, it may be the smallest bar in Chicagoland, but that’s how proprietor Scott Bradley of Evanston likes it. “It’s a place for adults to get a cocktail and a bite,” he shares. With just 12 seats, it’s intimate and charming, along the lines of a cool local spot in Brooklyn or even Paris. You won’t get bogged down with choices – just four wines, one beer on tap, and a full bar of classic cocktails. “There are plenty of choices in your everyday life. This is a respite,” offers Bradley. The Alcove: 516 Main St., Evanston; Monday – Saturday, 4 – 11 pm; closed Sunday, Cash only -JC

Kaufman’s Is Back! Hard to believe it’s only been a year since the devastating fire that closed the beloved Kaufman’s Deli; it feels like an eternity since I had a really good corned beef sammy. But Kaufman’s is back, better than ever. The new, modern build out has an expanded kitchen and new menu items. Owners Bette and Judy Dworkin are thrilled to be back for their loyal customers. Now please excuse me while I go order a smoked fish tray for the holidays! Kaufman’s Deli: 4905 Dempster St., Skokie, 847-6776190, kaufmansdeli.com -JC
