Attracting talent: a time to take care The turnaround is coming and Randstad’s research shows early signs of a coming global talent shortage. It’s a shortage which will become increasingly acute. The bottom line is, some companies are beginning to put the downturn behind them and they need to start hiring.

Hunting for talent The survey shows that the UK is very traditional in its approach to finding people. Yes, online methods are now widely deployed and whilst spend on print has declined, these are still the predominant methods used by organisations to recruit. But organisations are finding that print and online advertising tend to deliver very large volumes of low quality, inappropriate CVs. There are potentially far more efficient and productive methods that revolve around networks.

Online screening There’s also growing evidence that recruiters check out a

candidate’s online profile as a formal part of the assessment process. Time was when we could keep our personal life completely discrete. What we did outside working hours was our own business. But because of the way social networks work, that’s no longer the case. We can’t completely control who knows what about what we say or what we do and who we do it with. A growing awareness of this clash between different parts of our lives (“context collision”) means that many people are creating multiple online profiles to suit different audiences. In which case, what value is there in looking at someone’s online profile at all? This is a highly contentious issue which won’t go away.
