2010

DEAR CHURCH 2010 is our greatest opportunity yet. If you live life for yourself you will lose it. If you lose your life for Christ and His cause i.e. others, you will find it. (Words paraphrased from Matthew 10:39). The greatness of life is not found only in what we achieve, but in the lives we have touched and influenced along the way, with the love, hope and faith of Christ. During the next few months our themes are centred around our purpose statement, to show love, give hope and inspire faith. Each of these everlasting attributes carries a life-changing message. Our prayer is that we would become the message and teach others. 2010 holds promise of a great year at Majestic. Together let’s keep building with God, His Church and Kingdom. Our best is yet to be. Love and blessings,

Leo and Suzanne

Tech Team SOUND, LIGHTS, DATA (Training Included) God gives each of us gifts, abilities, and talents. Some of us are blessed with a gift of a voice like an angel. For others, God has granted the ability to turn a blank canvas into a heavenly vista. And for a very select few, God has bestowed a very special talent indeed. The gift of “Not Being Freaked Out by Technology”. Being on the Tech Team is a great way to really get connected with our church. I started a year or so ago doing Data, so that means getting the song lyrics up on the projector, queuing DVDs, displaying scripture, that sort of thing. Barry has let me loose on the Lights desk now too. Anyway, it’s all heaps of fun, there are lots of thrills, (a few spills in fairness!), but there is no feeling quite like serving with our church. I have found in my Christian walk that every time I have stepped out and given something, I have received so much more in return. Serving in the Tech Team is absolutely no exception. So if computers and electronics tremble at the mere suggestion of your name, then perhaps you should join in the fun! - Scott Ferguson Contact Barry: barry@majestic.org.nz or 379 2781

New Opeinings At the end of 2009 Ps Suzanne Hanssen received an invitation to travel to South Korea for the launch of a new fashion collection by a Korean designer Maggie Sunu. Knowing about our passion as a church for the fashion industry, Maggie was eager to show Suzanne how she goes about preparing her clothing collections. Suzanne anticipated that this would be a trip, which would lead to some great business connections for Majestic’s cultural mandate call to the fashion industry. To her surprise she soon discovered that God had so much more than this in store. MAKING THE DECISION TO GO Suzanne has always had a love for fashion and in a way many years ago laid down pursuing it as a career. As she lunched with her beautiful daughter inlaws one day last year, encouragement came from them that “you are never too old to pursue your dreams.” After that conversation, Suzanne shared with Majestic’s Ministry Leadership Team about a fresh sense she had that God has something for us within this pillar of society. There was a sense that somewhere, somehow, in the mix of ministry and the call that Majestic has, Suzanne would have a role to play inside the fashion industry. So when this opportunity came over Christmas it felt challenging stepping into something that was still an unfamiliar territory. To go she had to know the time was right. It was going to take a lot of boldness to step out and do it. What gave Suzanne confirmation that to go was the right decision was a reminder of a prophetic

word she received from Ps Phil Pringle last July during the Get Smart Youth Conference. Part of his word for her and Leo was that “now is a time of fulfilment, now is a time for your opportunity…” Making a trip to Korea felt like a “this is it” moment. FASHION CONNECTIONS Suzanne had a lot of fun with Maggie and got to see first hand how she prepares her fashion collections (which incidentally sell in Australia and New Zealand). She was able to tap into the creative processes Maggie uses in the preparation stages of building a new garment collection. A highlight for Suzanne during this process was visiting a huge fabric warehouse and being able to take home samples of many stunning materials. Another significant moment was being able to share with Maggie, work belonging to some of the young fashion designers here at Majestic. Maggie has 20 years of experience in the fashion industry and had a lot of business-wise ideas to share with Suzanne that will be very useful as we continue to step out into this pillar of society. Although a great friendship was established with Maggie and definitely lots of new insight gleaned for how we can go about building our own fashion collections, Suzanne also had a sense that God had something a bit different in store for Majestic. Then an opportunity came, to travel down to a southern city in South Korea, to meet Choi Boko, who is one of the top players in South Korea’s fashion industry. His clothing collections were unique in design, brightly patterned and colourful, it was love at first sight for Suzanne with many of the coats she discovered on his display racks (don’t we know that she has a thing for coats!) The aspect of Choi’s work that excited Suzanne the most was that his work is about more than designing trendy and appealing pieces. “What excited me about looking at his collections is that fashion for him is not just about clothing but about a message. There has to be that

point of difference and that cutting edge thing. He tries to convey a message about his view of life including social matters… I got a sense that work like Choi’s is the direction God wants Majestic to head in as we design clothing that brings a statement of faith, hope and love to society.” After spending time with Choi, Suzanne feels Majestic’s next step for getting further involved in the fashion industry is to discover what our unique difference will be in clothing design. A TIME TO STRETCH Suzanne is a “journal girl”, not in a sense that everyday she writes about her day as such, but loves to note down sayings, thoughts and scriptures. At Christmas she received a new one and it was with this journal that she boarded the plane to Korea with. When packing, she had thought about putting her old journal which was full of great writings, thoughts etc but as this trip was more of a business orientated one and needed room for clothes in her bag allowance, so she decided to leave it behind. It was during lunch with Pastor Kim, a pastor both Leo and Suzanne had spent time during their last visit, Suzanne was thrown into what she felt at the time was “the deep end”. Pastor Kim asked her to preach at the next service happening straight after lunch. “Why had she not brought her old journal which would have given her heaps of thoughts and messages to share on?” For Suzanne, who although always has a fantastic message to share when she speaks, public speaking is not her favourite thing to do and usually she likes to be well prepared in advance. But – there was no time to prepare, just the thoughts she had scribbled down in her new journal and a little time to say “God I need You.” As well as speaking that afternoon at the church meeting, Suzanne was given many opportunities to move beyond what she thought her capacity was as she stepped out in the power of the Holy Spirit. She was asked to speak at more church services and mid week meetings, pray for

many people’s healings, water baptise a group of brand new Christians, and do a few more speaking engagements. It seems God wanted to teach her that she, as well as Leo, carries a message and a powerful anointing that needs to be shared. Watch out – I think we are going to see and hear a lot more from this incredible lady! THE BIGGER PART OF THE STORY During Suzanne and Jimmy’s (Jimmy came on the trip to act as her translator) stay in South Korea, they were given the opportunity to meet with a radical church minister, Pastor Chun. Pastor Chun and his church run a ministry, which gives assistance to North Koreans, who wish to escape the oppression and starvation they face inside their nation. He has travelled to many Asian nations to assist defectors as they make a perilous journey by foot, rail and car across the border and through China and beyond. He then offers housing and schooling in South Korea, where refugees can take time to orientate themselves to a new way of life, take time to heal and hopefully hear and receive the message of freedom only Jesus Christ can bring to our hearts. Living a comfortable lifestyle in New Zealand, we really have no idea how hard life can be for many people around the world. During Suzanne’s time spent with Pastor Chun and the refugees who live at the centre he runs, she learnt about the plight North Koreans face and their stories have changed her outlook on life forever… A famine broke out in early 1990s and since then North Koreans have faced severe food shortages, which have left many people starving. It is estimated that is many as one in four of North Korea’s 23 million populations are affected by malnutrition and hunger. Desperate to earn money to pay for food for their family, or just wanting to be free from the oppression of propaganda that encircles their lives, many attempt to escape through the border into China. Although barbed wire and guards in bunkers surround the North Korean side of

the border, some guards can be bribed to turn a blind eye for as little as $15. Once past the guards they must then begin the trauma of crossing a vast river and then they must remain undetected in a safe house in China until the rescue contact is ready to smuggle them out into a nation they can receive refugee status in, like Laos or South Korea. Since 2003, 80% of the defectors have been women, due to the fact that it is much easier for them to escape than men who are often working in factories, military or farms where employers would quickly notice their absence. Sadly, once reaching China, many women are being exploited by the sex industry and although physically free of oppression they are now facing a new type of imprisonment. Suzanne met a woman, who lives in the centre she visited. She had left North Korea in hope of earning money to pay for medicine for her sick mother and food for her starving siblings. Once in China, she wound up being tricked into being a sex worker, before being freed by Pastor Chun and his rescue network. She shared with Suzanne about how upon arrival in South Korea, doctors discovered she had a cancerous tumour. If she had not left North Korea she would have died, but thankfully she was able to have surgery that saved her life. She now lives in South Korea and is slowly adjusting to a new way of living. It can be lonely without family and friends. The differences between the North and the South are described as like jumping a century apart. She now has citizenship, and a job working at Chun’s centre. Best of all, she is now a committed Christian with a strong faith. Pastor Chun says real faith can be difficult for many North Koreans, because, they have spent their whole lives being fed lies, to receive real truth in their hearts is a long process. Chun says it is a process that is worth it, “these people have lost all their rights. The most important thing I can do is to revive their humanity.” He says it typically can take up to 12 years for them to be healed of the physical and mental trauma

they have faced, but his belief is that in God’s timing this process can be sped up. WHAT NOW What God has in store for Majestic in Korea is BIG. Over the past four trips taken into this nation. Leo, Suzanne and some of our team have been steadily building clarity and focus into exactly what God has in store for us. We always knew that as well as establishing a great church or being known for having a creative edge, working in the South would also be about the North. The call is big and will involve us all, whether we get a working visa to teach English, are part of a Majestic church planting team or a visit with a creative team or simply take up the call here in our nation to pray for both the people of the North and South of this land God has called us to. We can all start here and now with prayer. We can be a part of seeing freedom come to the heart, mind, soul and body of so many beautiful Korean people and beyond who need to know they are loved, and that there is a plan and purpose for their lives. Jimmy: Here it is. Ahead of us is a big chunk of opportunity, it can be overwhelming, but for now we just have to take a bite out of it. For us it might look like a huge hamburger, but once we start to take bites out of it, it becomes possible to see how we can get through to the end result. Suzanne: What God has got for us is huge. It will be amazing. I’ve come back from this trip humbled that God is trusting us with another nation and sure that we can plunge into the call God has given us. As we take hold of a promise from Romans 4, “we will come up strong, ready for God, sure that God will make good on what He had said.” The words of Hillsong United in their album ‘Tear Down the Walls sum up what I am sensing - “I don’t need to see it to believe it, cause I can’t shake this fire burning deep inside my heart.”

Porcelain 2009

Miss World

Magdalena Schoeman is a sophisticated 19 year old, who speaks 3 languages, is well travelled and has a large, contagious smile. You may have seen her at Majestic where she attends services on a regular basis. It has been a momentous year for Magdalena. After being talent scouted and trained by our own “fashionista”, Andhy Blake, she was crowned our current Miss New Zealand last year in April. Since then she has raised funds for the children’s charity Variety Club, and made numerous appearances at local and national functions and events. Last November, Magdalena travelled to London and then on to Johannesburg to compete in the Miss World competition. We caught up with her in January to chat about her recent experience of being a contestant in the Miss World 2009 contest.

What made you decide to enter the Miss World pageant? Becoming Miss World New Zealand automatically enters me in Miss World but the pageant has always meant a lot to me. It was a chance to represent my new country and also achieve some of my goals in life; I have always wanted to be on stage. Any thoughts on having been labelled New Zealand’s most beautiful woman? Haha! Well I feel very flattered but I believe that Miss World New Zealand is about personality, intelligence and confidence, as that is what separates the women in the contest.

Growing up did you ever follow the Miss World beauty pageants on TV? Yes I did, I always admired the women on TV and found them to be great role models.

What are your favourite moments from your travels? In London, we went on a bus tour but it was raining so we didn’t get to see much, but the Miss World Charity auction was very special to me as I took a beautiful Eyris blue pearl pendant and it was the second highest item bid on in the auction. All the money raised went to Haiti before the earthquake. In Johannesburg it was fantastic to see the tourism side to the country I was born in, my favourite spot was the Zambali exclusive resort. Oh there are so many great experiences! From handling white lion cubs to speaking at the FIFA fan fest in front of a crowd of over 100,000. Miss World has been the best experience of my life and I will carry the memories with me forever.

Who has inspired you most in your life? Different people inspire me everyday, that is the beauty of life. The only person who inspires me everyday of my life is God.

Have you ever watched Miss Congeniality? Are there any similarities in the real life competition? Yes I have, and yes in some way I believe

there is. When we arrive you are alone and don’t know anyone but after the 7 weeks you are like family and I do feel like many of the girls are part of my family still. It is a very special experience to go through together. The difference between the movie and real life is that the women are intelligent and it is not so superficial. The competitors are definitely young women who want to make a difference in life, for instance 21 of the Miss World 2009 contestants were law students. US celebrity and Oscar winner Halle Berry was Miss USA in 1983. Do you have any Hollywood aspirations? I am definitely leaving my options open, as I believe that’s how opportunities come along. Another few facts for you: Did you know 13 former Miss World finalists have been bond girls in the James Bond films? Also, Bollywood actresses Aishwarya Rai and Priyanka Chopra are both former Miss Worlds. Did you get to spend any time with the pageant winner Kaiane Aldorino (Miss Gibraltar)? I spent some time with her in London after the contest because we were in separate groups for the contest. Kaiane is a lovely woman who brings a new edge to the Miss World contest. What next? Next I plan to enjoy my title by doing events such as the AMI Stadium open day and also I did the celebrity football match at the Phoenix football game in January. My main goal now is to start modelling fulltime.

Life Groups PEEL FOREST ECO LODGE A diverse group of us headed down to Peel Forest Eco Lodge for a weekend in November. Surrounded by native bush and various walks, we all took to enjoying each others company and doing what we like to do best on holiday. There is nothing like going away together to get to know people more. Life groups are about ‘doing life together’ and for those that came they will giggle about the crazy things that did happen... but we got to do it together! COMMUNITY AT ITS DINING BEST Remember those crazy nights of jumping in and out of cars, spending just enough time to gobble down one course of a meal at a house you have never been too, before you courtily thank the guests and head off to the next location? Well what fun! Four life groups on the east side of Christchurch spent the night together chasing meals around the city. The meal started at the Banks’ in Shirley (a classy location indeed) with a range of rich wintry soups complemented with bread. Next it was on to the Edward’s in

Cooking With Suzanne Hanssen, our usual recipe columnist being away in South Korea at the time of this magazine’s production, we called on a guest master chef who shows flair in the kitchen. Anna Smith, a friend of one of our Majestic staff, Kimberly Mallinson, was asked to share one of her fabulous recipes with us. Enjoy!

Aranui for sushi, Asian style... only floor seating available! After a moment of shock all ages crammed in and gathered round the lowered tables for a seaweed nibble. The Mackintosh’s in South Brighton coupled with the Spicers from Bromley, provided our taste buds with a treat from the far east, with their range of curries and rice. Finally, the Jackson’s in North

Brighton finished up the evening with a smorgasbord of deserts, everything you could imagine! The attention to detail was delightful, with hand written name tags for each food choice, the largest collection of crock- pots anyone has ever witnessed in one sitting and some fantastic conversation as we met, ate and moved around all night.

FAITH HOPE LOVE Faith words by Kallysa Hollis. Hope words by Brittany Mann. Love words by Gemma Banks. Photographs by Thomas Hurst ©2010 churcheshelpingchurches.com

FAITH There’s a catchphrase I’ve heard which says ‘faith spells risk’. Now this particular catchphrase has always annoyed me (my apologies if you have recently used this in a sermon or conversation), mainly because faith, clearly does not spell risk. F-A-I-T-H spells faith and R-I-S-K spells risk. Basic spelling I would’ve thought (usually it’s my husband who gives the English lessons). Of course I understand that this is just a little catchphrase to help people remember that faith is about stepping out and taking risks and, although I agree that faith requires action, God has recently taken me through a learning and growing experience - it turns out it’s not just physical growth spurts that hurt - and consequently I have grown in my faith. I completed my last semester of university in November, and now after four years I am finally a qualified social worker. Of course, I had a plan for what was going to happen next, which basically went like this; have a two to three week holiday; get a job; buy everyone amazing Christmas presents; get an expensive hair cut – all meaningful stuff, as you can see - and then Daniel would start back at University in February and I would be the bread winner. The brilliant part of my plan (or so I thought) was that we would have two incomes for three months, meaning; we could pay off some debt and buy a new car, seeing as

our poor car was the victim of a brutal hit and run. But my three week holiday came and went with no job offers (but plenty of denial letters) and before I knew it was December, Christmas was fast approaching and I had just found out I was pregnant. I was feeling discouraged and curious as to why God wasn’t doing His part in my brilliant plan. So the days came and went and I managed to land a job interview which had me in good spirits for a week until I discovered that not only had I not gotten the job but that a girl from my class had gotten it. And so the whinging and moping began. I would love to say that I spent my days in deep prayer and intercession for the nations, or even that I became the perfect housewife baking and cleaning for my hard working husband. But alas it seemed the combination of pregnancy sickness and discouragement did not bode well for me and instead I fell back into the bad habits of watching Oprah and taking daily afternoon naps. Of course my daily schedule was interrupted regularly with my complaints to God, which went along the lines of, ‘oh woe is me, why aren’t you providing me with what I deserve, I’ve worked so hard, moan moan moan’. Of course God would try to speak to me and I would be constantly led to scriptures about not worrying and putting my trust in God. I would read my daily devotional and for a moment I would feel encouraged that maybe God would

come through, that the perfect job was just around the corner. But the moment would pass and the anxiety levels would go right back up again. It quickly became apparent that I was suffering from a lack of faith. Fast forward to the present. After two months of anxious thoughts, many cover letters and too many afternoon naps, I had a breakthrough. After Pastor Sharyn’s message on moving forward, I realised how much grumbling and negative confessing I had been doing, so with tears streaming down my face (I could blame it on the pregnancy hormones but we all know I’m a crier) I repented. I repented of my grumbling and moaning, I repented of thinking I knew better than God, and mainly I repented for not trusting Him. You see, I realised that faith isn’t just about taking risks but it is about trust. It’s about trusting that the God who has already brought you this far will not leave you. He won’t answer one day and then ignore you the next. Nor will he provide one week only to let you go without the next. I realised that over the past months I had stopped trusting God, I had lost faith that He had the perfect plan for my life. So perhaps I could start a new catch phrase: faith spells trust. Oh, and in true God fashion, I got a job offer the following morning. So I think the appropriate way to end this article is with a George Michael quote “You gotta have faith, faith, faith...”

HOPE Recently, ‘Hope for Haiti’ has become something of a catchphrase in the global media in the aftermath of the worst earthquake Haiti has experienced in two hundred years. The capital city, Port-au-Prince, was razed to the ground, approximately one million people were left homeless, and the death toll climbed steadily into the hundreds of thousands. As a failed state by all accounts, Haiti has been in need of hope long before the recent earthquake. Since it’s independence in 1804, Haiti has teetered on the edge of economic, environmental, social and political calamity. As the poorest state in the Western hemisphere, Haiti suffers from 98% deforestation and its people live on less than 2 USD a day. Only 40% of people have access to basic healthcare and being Haitian is itself a risk factor for HIV/AIDS. The state’s long history of oppressive dictatorial regimes has left Haiti with almost no infrastructure on which to build a functioning, productive nation. This, coupled with Haiti’s frequent tropical storms and hurricanes, such as those occurring in 2004 and 2008, means Haiti has been a nation with little hope for a long while. Here in New Zealand, we continue to receive daily reports of an increasingly anarchical situation in Haiti. Looting, lynching and police brutality have become the norm in the streets of Port-au-Prince, occurrences that have been exacerbated by a relatively disorganized, patchy and slow humanitarian aid response. However, somewhat uncharacteristically of the global media, such reports are sporadically punctuated with extraordinary accounts of the strength of the human spirit in times of, well, hopelessness. It has struck me that perhaps the Haitians’ suffering need not be entirely in vain if we, incredibly blessed and wealthy as we are in the so-called First World, could glean courage, perspective and yes, even hope, from these remarkable people whose souls remain miraculously in tact despite the brokenness that surrounds them. I feel somewhat unconformable in saying this, because the last thing I want to do is cheapen or demean the Haitians’ s into something that makes us feel better about our own already privileged lives. But the fact of the matter is, whether one is buried alive under tons of rubble, or just having one of those days where nothing seems to go right, we could all do with a little more hope now and again. In the immediate wake of the earthquake, it was reported that throngs of people, fearing aftershocks, waited in the streets of Port-au-Prince for aid to trickle in. One

article in the New York Times spoke about how there were no sirens to be heard, nothing at all to suggest that help was on its way. The shrill wails of emergency vehicles were in fact replaced by voices lifted in prayer and song; one phrase in particular was said to be heard repeated over and over: “Blessed be the Lord.” A 69-year old woman trapped for a week with a dislocated hip and broken leg, said she “talked only to my boss, God,” throughout her ordeal, and in prayer found the strength to hold on long enough to be rescued. Other reports tell of a 26-year old woman who was liberated from the ruins of a collapsed store, smiling and singing after being trapped for a similar length of time. It is accounts such as these that paint a beautiful picture of people refusing to give in to despair, even in the darkest of situations. Though these stories do not necessarily represent the norm, the idea that there are people out there who have survived against the odds are still able to give thanks for what little they have left, restores my faith, my hope, in humanity. The people of Haiti have never been strangers to affliction; now they are party more than ever to what it means to suffer. By all accounts, they are a people in desperate need of hope. And yet, thousands of kilometers away, in New Zealand, there are Haitians who have unwittingly given us a gift: they have shown us, in the midst of their despair, what it is to remain hopeful.

LOVE Love is one of those things you can’t really define, and in having no universal definition, it is left up to the individual to form his or her own opinion of love. Therefore, the first years of life are very important, as this is when an understanding of love is established. That said, I am going to share what I believe encapsulates the word love. One of the greatest attributes of love is freedom. The two live alongside each other so closely that it is almost impossible to separate them. For Christians, that freedom comes from knowing God and his perfect love towards us. This is the greatest example of love, a love that freely and selflessly laid down its life for the good of others. If we have no other understanding of love this is the perfect explanation. True love comes from God, yet without freedom, there would be no diversity or uniqueness. There would be no individuality and life would be boring. Each of us has our own tastes, talents, and desires that make us unique,

so it would be unthinkable to live in a world without freedom. Love, then, is the necessary lubricant for a free society. The effect of this is that we are all able to live together, respecting each other as unique and self-governing individuals. Living in a free society means that people can choose – within reason – how they want to live their lives. This ability we have to choose freely can lead to good, or it can lead to bad. The media love bad news and sometimes it is hard not to become cynical when they are presenting so much of this negative view of the world. What you have to remember though, is that the media is all about making money, and nothing sells like bad news. This is fine in itself; however, it is sometimes hard to separate the media’s view of the world from our own. That is what I think makes love so great. It allows us to look at the world differently. We see the good in people instead of the bad. Sure, everyone makes mistakes, but how would we learn if we didn’t? Love pushes us to understand others and gives them a chance to explain themselves. Seeing the best in people actually encourages them to see it in themselves as well. Everyone has something to offer the world. It is up to us to enhance that and encourage it to good use. The true meaning of love is hard to maintain when the world places such a high value on appearance, status and materialism. These are important aspects of life, for sure, but that is all they are. The human craving for love is so vast that if we do not feel loved, we instantly start trying to fill the gap with other things. Love is all about what we place our value in. It is no wonder then that people often try and replace it with the things the world values. But, this will never satisfy like a love that is giving and selfless. Giving and generosity are also a huge part of love. When we open our hearts to love, we are choosing to live, not only for ourselves, but actually for others as well. The magnitude of this is hard to grasp, and even harder to put into practice, but giving to others blesses us in a way that could never be bought. This is not why we give, but an encouragement to keep on giving. Opening our hearts to love is necessary for us, as human beings, to live freely. It is the key to our happiness. Living generously is the means for us to action that love. This has been exemplified recently by the love we have seen outpoured to meet the needs of the Haitian people in their time of tragedy. It is a great example of humanity’s compassion, reaching out to those in need, and bridging the gap between life and death.

Haiti is a nation that is in desperate need of economic aid. They have no option left now but to rebuild the country from the ground up. The international response has been generous so far, but I urge you to become a part of that response and give to one of the many emergency appeals that have been set up to help alleviate the crisis. If you feel so inclined, there are some excellent aid agencies that are guaranteed to send your donation to where it is needed most (websites listed below). Perhaps even more than monetary aid, the people of Haiti need our prayers. If you are that way inclined, please pray for: • An effective distribution of aid, one that isn’t hampered by governmental corruption • A speedy and productive reconstruction • For families to be reunited • For the physical and psychological recovery of the people affected by the earthquake WEBSITES TO VISIT http://worldrelief.org/ • Every Tuesday, World Relief invites you to stop for one minute at exactly 4:53 p.m. – the moment the quake hit - and pray for Haiti, the survivors, the churches and all the relief teams in Port-au-Prince. • Every $2 you give empowers local churches in Port-au-Prince to feed one person two hot meals. • There are opportunities to submit an application to volunteer in Haiti, should World Relief choose to mobilize a team to respond to the crisis. www.worldvision.org.nz/haitiquake • World Vision are asking for donations of $30, but will gladly accept any amount you are willing to give. The website also contains eye-witness accounts of the earthquake’s widespread destruction from New Zealander James Addis, who has been deployed to Haiti in the wake of the crisis. For more ways you can help, this website contains a comprehensive list of all the aid agencies contributing to this cause.

Majestic Families This feature is new to The Majestic. In each issue we will meet some of our Majestic Church family and get to know more about them. Jason & Gina Spicer are the new faces overseeing the crèche (under 2’s department of our Majestic Kids programme) on Sundays. They have taken an active part in the life of Majestic for a number of years and have three beautiful daughters.

When and what first brought you along to our church? Jason: I started coming off and on for about a year and a half after Gina first did and through all my questioning and searching realised that this church thing was pretty all right so I might as well give it a go. Gina: A friend from Teacher’s College invited me to a Pat Mesiti meeting, a big event here in 1997. It was one of the first times I had been in a church. They asked people to come to front if they wanted to get to know God better and somehow I just knew it was what I needed to do. I have been at Majestic ever since.

they do something cute or funny and how proud I feel when they achieve something new. The great camping trips! Gina: I love all the new things that they learn and do, watching them grow and discover. Every day is so busy and different. I love all the kisses and cuddles and the fun family stuff we do together. What is the best advice you have ever been given? Jason: Work hard at whatever you do. Gina: Don’t stress about little stuff and stop and enjoy every moment as it comes.

What do you love most about being part of Majestic? We are surrounded by people, that we know will always support and challenge us to go further on in our walk with God. It is great being part of a big family and knowing that no matter what we go through, there’s always someone there to support us. We love all the different generations and how they connect at Majestic. The great worship and all the amazing events we host.

What is it about young children, that has inspired you to step into the role of overseeing the crèche department during Sunday church? Watching our own children, it amazes us how much God space and potential they have at such a young age - just waiting to be drawn out. Even now you can see their giftings and personalities, i.e. music, caring for others, dance etc. We just want to be able to create an environment to help that develop and flourish.

How did you guys meet? Gina: We met through my sister in 1996. How we started dating is another story. He knew right away I was the one. It took me a lot longer, but I got there. (So glad I did).

What has been one of your family highlights over the past year? Jason’s Dad coming to know God just a few days before passing away. The amazing and divinely appointed conversations at this time and the role Olivia played in his journey. Going back to our old family batch in Port Levy at Christmas after it had been finally done up enough to stay in again. She is one of the oldest batches in the bay but we love her. We are so looking forward to many more holidays spent with all my cousins and their children just as we did growing up, a new generation.

Tell us about your children Olivia is almost 5. She loves to pray for people, meet new friends, ballet, and dressing up. She is super organized and everything has its own place! Brianna is 3 and a half. She loves to sing, ride her bike and is a great wee runner. Amelia is 15 months. She loves to dance, laugh, and is always on the go. They all love books, puzzles and bathtime with Daddy. Your favourite parts of being a Mum & Dad are... Jason: All the laughs and smiles you get when

What are you all most looking forward to in 2010? Jason: Doing more fun things with the girls, more date nights with Gina, moving house, and our 10-year anniversary. Gina: Doing all the God stuff He wants us to step into as a couple, as a family, and as part of this church. Spending quality time with friends and family. Olivia: Starting school in May, I am going to Hillview where my big cousin Shayden goes. Brianna: Starting ballet with my big sister when I turn 4. Amelia: I have just learnt to walk once I have mastered that I am going to try the running thing.

Meet the

Artist

Meet Danny, Ben and Jordi. Artists within our church who have got together to launch an exciting new clothing label. Jordi Duff is a fresh to-be-released clothing label specializing in quirkiness and celebrity clothing. They love the random and the outrageous. They are officially launching their new label very very soon so keep posted! As artists what motivates you? People, fashion, music, everyday random events, mystery and the challenge to push ourselves further in more than just one creative area. Jordi Duff is about to hit the streets. How was this dream birthed? We all wanted to do clothing due to our creative vibe. We realized that clothing (especially tees) have the great medium to express ourselves and what we believe in and make a statement. We all wanted to see what God could do through this creative element of fashion. We also have a great interest in the celebrity fashion

area and really that is the area our label is pushing to be recognised in. What part of the process do you each play? We all design. Danny takes care of administration and music. Jordi takes care of supplying and orders. I (Ben) am in charge of finalizing designs and co-coordinating with the printers. Any unforeseen challenges along the way? Sustaining a level of fashion/style; keeping up the quality of creativity. Friendship with business. Having to have a plan B if something falls through. Being involved with this project has made you realize? You can’t do it all on your own and that the greatest creator is God. He is more than happy to give you inspiration and ideas. There’s got to be purpose in what you do. It can never be all for yourself. Knowing when to move and when to hold back. Asking God where/when to go. Each of you specializes in different arts. How does this link you together? That’s simple. One bounces off each other. Fashion, music and art go hand in hand. It’s as simple as that. It’s all creative.

Marketing is a big part of the process, how have you created a following? We market on our website which is soon to be launched. We target big people groups through facebook and the art industry. We also have people who you’d call famous who are wearing our clothing ie: Miss New Zealand. Also being outside the box, marketing is everything, even from our photo shoots, we believe that we need to add mystery so that the viewers ask about our scenes and why we set up the scene like that. We don’t want people to just glance once but to go back and keep asking things and seeing more and more little things we’ve planted in our photo shoots. Where do you see your label in 10 years? We want to be selling our clothing in different nations and still be blessing who we can from our label. Words of wisdom for aspiring designers? Design outside the box and be humble. Never limit yourself or God, have the right heart, making sure you don’t cross the line, but being clever in how you can capture the audience of the world, always keep the mystery because even the Word has mystery.

Fuse Business Profile What first brought you to Majestic? We were looking for a good family church in Christchurch that held our same beliefs and Interests. Describe your new business initiatives: Rob’s Advertising provides small to medium sized businesses with effective marketing tools such as business directories throughout New Zealand, and Rob’s Print brings a new dynamic to the company providing our clients with cost effective Print, Design and Web Products. Where do you gain inspiration from? Other business people both here in New Zealand and overseas.

What gets you out of bed in the morning or keeps you up late? My 3 kids get me up, that and my wife telling me I have to get out of bed! New ideas keep me up to all hours.

In your job role, are there any challenges you’ve had to overcome or areas God has stretched you in? God is really working with me in the area of leadership.

What are you reading at present? Instant Cashflow, by Brad Sugars.

What is a fresh revelation that you’ve recently had? If you cook marinated chicken nibbles on the bbq they always burn.

What is your general approach to life? Try and not get run over today. Highlights over the past 12 months? Last year was a very hard year for me as I took that year off from advertising and moved into finance, a bad year for a move to Finance/Investment! But on the flip side, it was a year of growth in my Christian walk.

Future business goals? To grow the brand nationwide and then branch into Australia. Any words of advice for people considering stepping out in business? Go hard!

Reviews Kimberly Mallinson reviews ‘Vintage Jesus’ by Mark Driscoll & Gerry Breshears and the album ‘Consumed’ by Jesus Culture.

Vintage Jesus Mark Driscoll & Gerry Breshears

Consumed Jesus Culture Music

“At first glance, Jesus’ resume is rather simple. He never travelled more than a few hundred miles from his home. He never held a political office, never wrote a book, never married, never had sex, never attended college, never visited a big city and never won a poker tournament. He died both homeless and poor. Nonetheless, Jesus is the most famous person in all of human history – No army, nation or person has changed human history to the degree that Jesus, the homeless-man, has. Some two thousand years after he walked the earth, Jesus remains as hot as ever.”

‘Consumed’ is Jesus Culture’s latest album and according to a local Christchurch Christian bookstore, during 2009, ‘Consumed’ sold more copies nationwide than top-selling Hillsong Music. It is fast becoming a very popular Christian Rock music choice.

The question posed is “who is Jesus?” So much has been said, but what is Biblical truth and what is just human opinion? In Vintage Jesus, an influential young pastor from Mars Hill Church, Mark Driscoll, and a seasoned theologian, Gerry Breshears, have decided to chase Jesus through scripture and pop culture to find their stance on biblical theology. The creativity of the cover itself is enough to make you want to pull this book off the shelf. Underneath it’s dust cover are vintage and pop art prints of Jesus that have appeared in culture at one time or another. The way it is written makes it extremely relevant to the younger postmodern generation who are seeking truthful, solid answers. The text is bold, humorous and in your face in the way that it addresses common faith questions about the existence of Jesus, yet still it is deeply theological and intensely practical. I can guarantee you will laugh your way through many of the pages, yet at the same time you will leave challenged, inspired and seeing clearly, as this is not a book lacking in substance. Vintage Jesus is a must read for anyone wanting a clear understanding on what the Bible has to say about who Jesus is and the place God planned for Him to have in our life. Available online at www.relit. org or at any good Christian bookstore.

The album is full of heart-felt worship songs. It has 10 great tracks that call the listener to enter and engage in the presence and holiness of God. My personal favourite is track ten, ‘Light of Your Face’. This song is a great reminder that we can pray for others asking God to bless them, for them to be protected, to have peace and to be embraced by God so that they will see God’s face shine upon them as heaven touches their life. ‘Consumed’ also features a few covers of songs by Keith Green and Delirious. The album is more focused on raw worship than it is on entertainment and slick production. If you buy the album you will get the DVD along with the CD and you will see the musicians are on stage in t-shirts and jeans, not anything dressy or in the latest style trend, nor do they have the most fabulous light rigging or stage set, yet the album draws you in and keeps you near. As well as going out and purchasing the album from any great Christian music store, you can also get your hands on the album on I-tunes or if you just want to preview it first, become a fan on facebook and go to the ‘Consumed’ e-card link they have posted where you can preview video and audio for all tracks on this album. Jesus Culture are based in Redding, California and this latest album, ‘Consumed’, is a great listen. It is about more than just listening to a selection of great worship songs. It is about seeing people encounter God’s extravagant love and power and then aspiring to take what they have experienced out into their world.

of glowsticks were hurled towards the stage in waves of bright colours, it was actually truly spectacular. I am not sure how Switchfoot managed to get back onto the stage without getting an eye taken out, but they did and then proceeded to rock out a great encore. Personally, some of the highlights for me were a new band called NewWorldSon, new to Parachute, these guys were the definition of cool, Mark De Jong reckons they were going to be a surprise favorite and I think he was right. With what is referred to as Pop/Gospel/ Soul type music it had people clapping and grooving the whole way along. Steve Apirana was pretty much exactly the same as he was 10 years ago, playing the same hit songs with the same cheeky style. One set he did, he had 30 minutes and he only managed to perform 4 songs. No-one seemed surprised though and it appears that after 12 years he has a new album coming out sometime this year.

PARACHUTE 2010 – 20 YEARS AND COUNTING Parachute Music has now finished it’s 20th music festival, with the first one back in 1992 bringing in a crowd of 1,200 people to crowds of up to 27,500 in recent years. Mark De Jong, the head honcho of Parachute Music said recently that the plan for the future was simple, to try to develop what they have here in New Zealand and take it to Australia, where they have in fact already started. The week before Parachute Festival a few of the main acts hit Sydney and Brisbane for a Parachute Concert, which by all reports was well received.

So Parachute 2010... it was deemed to have the best line up ever, with headliners Switchfoot, Underoath, Leeland, NewWorldSon, Hillsong United, Family Force 5 and more. Plus they brought back a few of the classics, my favourite being Steve Apirana. Switchfoot delivered. The crowd were given glowsticks... possibly a silly idea in hindsight, it looked awesome at the start, with 22 thousand plus people waving them around but as the band left the stage the crowd decided they would give them back. Hundreds and hundreds

There were a couple of moments that stood out the most over the weekend. As it was reported on the news, the weather itself was not friendly. Only for the second time in 20 years has it rained like it did this year. Sunday morning a few of us decided to venture down to the morning meeting despite the drizzle, I think all of us are glad we did. The Parachute Band led worship and there was a good crowd of people who were undeterred by the rain as well, and perhaps it was the fact that there were thousands of people prepared to get wet in the rain so they could encounter God that made the atmosphere so electric. Paul De Jong spoke that morning, a great message, near the end as he started to wrap up, the heavens opened, and it started to pour, I mean it really poured. Nobody moved, a few umbrellas went up but it was pretty silent, as we all closed our eyes, lifted our hands to heaven and prayed, in the pouring rain, it felt like a holy moment, for me it was a holy moment. Made me think... if a group of people did the same on a Sunday, refused to be put off by anything else that may be going on and decided they would encounter God... imagine what could happen. Overall Parachute 2010 was an absolute winner, certainly it would have been nicer had the weather been more accommodating, but I can live with that. Worth the trip without a doubt.

MAJESTIC AT PARACHUTE 2010 - FUN, IMPACT, AND RAIN The Swarm crew has performed at Parachute before, but this year was something special, they were apart of Parachute’s 20th birthday celebrations. The crew consisted of Andre, Elly, Nate, Lauren, Nae Nae, Janika, Kelly, Shannen, Rach, Jamie, Kezza, Mele, John, Brock and a few special guests like Phillip Attmore and Nate Butler. The support crew consisted of many others, who all helped make it what it was... you know who you are. This year we all stayed at Ascot Motel in Hamilton, which we were stoked about because it had a pool! Turns out we didn’t need it as much as we had hoped we would, God decided to water the plants instead. However the first day it was hot and so Nate managed to prove that he can hold his breath for a very long time under water... when he came up he had fish gills. Parachute always has a number of dance crew’s performing, most of which are extremely talented groups, however Swarm has always brought something different to the table and are now

recognised as being more than just a dance crew. Swarm had two performances over the weekend, Saturday at the Massive Stage and Sunday at the Deluxe Stage. The first performance went really well, with a great crowd and an almost seamless performance, everyone was buzzing afterwards. There is a tendency for sound and lighting issues to happen as there is no time for any run through on stage beforehand, however this time it was pretty good on that front as well. Craig Clark (Get Smart Director) commented to one young person that watching Swarm was, ‘ the best half hour of his life ‘. The show itself consisted of dance, song, rap, tap and more. Phillip Attmore was in the top 20 of America’s ‘ So you think you can dance ‘, and aside from his cool tap piece, he delivered an awesome spoken word which got the crowd cheering. Elly’s new song ‘ Do Your Dance’ seemed to be a hit and certainly the last dance number was a crowd favorite and a really nice finish to a great show.

Perhaps the main difference between this crew and some of the other dance crew’s at Parachute this year was the strong sense of unity and a deep desire to use their gifts and talents to make God famous rather than themselves, they carried a different presence into their performance and left the crowd with something truly satisfying... the presence of God. Not many can pull of such a feat, many can entertain, many can lead people into worship but not many can entertain whilst leading you into a place of worship and leaving you with the sweet taste of God in your mouth at the same time. They represented Majestic well, very well, and anyone that had a part to play should be stoked with the outcome, whether your part was on stage or not, maybe it was prayer, maybe it was sewing, driving or who knows what else, the goal was achieved. The goal... turn up, do an excellent job and impact the crowd with the presence of God.

The Last

Word

Nate Butler is an established songwriter, music producer, vocal producer and recording artist based in Atlanta, Georgia. He has been a part of 45 million records sold worldwide. Butler has worked with multi-platinum artists such as Luther Vandross, Victoria Beckham aka Posh Spice, Craig David, Backstreet Boys, 3LW, Stacie Orrico, JoJo, Aaron Carter, The Cheetah Girls and others. Butler also penned the notable chart topping R&B smash single “Afterparty” by Koffee Brown, also referred to as a R&B classic. Butler has also racked up credits on blockbuster films such as Barbershop, Four Brothers, Dr. Dolittle 2, Save the Last Dance, and the Nickelodeon hit Jimmy Neutron. Tuere works for a U.S Congressman, specializing in Immigration, Homeland Security and Foreign Affairs. She worked on President Obama’s election campaign and has family affiliations with the Kennedy family. Recently introduced to the Majestic creative community, Nate and Tuere Butler have injected a fresh ounce of inspiration and encouraged us all to dream bigger. Both in highly influential careers, they

shared some lessons from their lives with us before returning home to the States. Highlight from last 6 months? Definitely this New Zealand visit and coming to Majestic, meeting SWARM, the Parachute festival, Taylor’s Mistake, Corsair Bay, Auckland, COFFEE, big breakfasts… Nate, what would be your biggest musical highlight to date? First platinum album in 1998 with my song, “Hold On”, on Xscape’s album, Traces of My Lipstick, Columbia Sony music. Tuere, biggest political moment? Meeting Barack Obama – 5 years before he was elected he spoke at my boss’s 60th birthday and my friends and I were blown away. Also, working for his presidential campaign. Favourite place in New Zealand? Majestic! Goals for this year? Nate: Number one song/ record worldwide Tuere: First thing on my list for 2010 was to travel with Nate, and I’m doing it and it’s only

February! I also want to be debt free. Nate, did you always know you wanted to get into the music industry? Definitely, I knew since I was 6 that I wanted to do something in music or the entertainment industry. Greatest lesson you’ve learnt so far? Tuere: That you can’t control everything. Nate: Learning patience and to wait on God’s timing. Letting go of your control and letting God do it. I learnt to give up my musical agenda after trying to force it in my own strength – and once I surrendered it for 18 months to just seek God, then He gave it back to me with extra. Any advice to the next generation? Tuere: Don’t limit yourself but take advantage of every opportunity. Explore everything you have an interest or talent in. Nate: Give everything over to God as soon as you can – the sooner the better and understand that God has your best interest in mind and you’re not losing anything but will gain everything. There’s more to God than what we realise – learn to trust. What are you currently reading? Tuere: Breaking Dawn, Stephanie Myers Nate: Dynamic Thought, Henry Thomas Hamblin. What is your favourite quote? Every successful man is a man of “faith,” every successful man is a man who cultivates “hope.” A successful man is always hopeful, is never a pessimist and he brings that which he hopes for, into being and reality, by the strength of his faith. Famous Last Words? Tuere: Many more words to say… Nate: Amen.
