Happy anniversary, Rêverie! A note from the Editor in Chief Somehow a year has flown by at lightning speed since we debuted Rêverie last January with a stunning image from Elizabeth Messina – and, what a year! Now we celebrate our one-year anniversary, and all the milestones of last year with another exquisite image from Elizabeth… and guess what? – yes, just as the front cover suggests, we now have a Rêverie Bébé too! Over the past year, we have grown in so many ways – forming partnerships with innovators in the wedding and bridal fashion scenes, working on shoots with the best of the best in London, Los Angeles, Berlin and Paris, and just continuing to focus on the content that our readers love to see. We also listened to your feedback and have refined the breadth of our content in Rêverie Magazine to bring you issues that are leaner, yet just as enthralling and inspirational. As the year progressed, we realized that we needed a bigger house – and as many a couple do in their first year, we set out to renovate a little. We spruced up our website and blog so that Rêverie Magazine and the Rêverie Blog are more easily navigable between the two and so that each of our past issues, as well as the downloadable Rêverie Lookbooks, now have their own space on our site for our readers to access easily. And as the year continued to fly by – as did my own pregnancy – we began to see that our current home was getting rather cramped and that the beautiful world of maternity and baby

needed its own “nursery.” As you can see by visiting our new addition, Rêverie Bébé, we now have a separate but integrated space where we feature all of the things that delight and inspire us about baby, mommy and kids design. We can’t wait for you to visit Rêverie Bébé and see all the heartwarming features we are lining up. The heart of Rêverie Magazine continues to be real weddings, however, in this issue, we seriously wanted to join in on all the featured celebrations. And what an incredible world trip that would make: from the historic Cotswolds to the waterfront of Chesapeake Bay to deep in the forests of Santa Cruz down to wine country in Sonoma Valley and finally to a decidedly European-styled celebration in Los Angeles. I personally can’t tell you how much I wish I could eat all the food and join in on the dancing with these couples! There is no doubt in my mind that this year will be even sweeter than the last. Let’s celebrate this anniversary in style – I raise my non-alcoholic glass of virtual bubbly to all our partners, friends, family and contributors who’ve supported us so far and, most of all, to you, our readers!

We've only just begun... A note from the Creative Director Somebody pinch me! Our anniversary issue! What a wonderful way to kick off what has already been an incredible year (and it's only January! Just.) Some people might consider this a pretty good excuse for a big bash, and don't imagine for a second that we didn't seriously think about it, but we're too busy working on new projects and collaborations to stop for a cocktail or three. Okay, so we might have time for one cocktail, but the rest will have to wait! Our first big collaboration of the year is with lover.ly. We're so excited to have joined their network of publishers, which consists of the best of the best of worldwide wedding blogs. All of our content, including features from all of our issues, will soon be available to collect and share on lover.ly. This is great news for

our contributors as they'll be getting even more exposure within the wedding community when they publish with us, and it's even better news for our readers as they now have even more ways to use Reverie to inspire their big day. And of course, there's the newest member of our family, Rêverie Bébé, which is already resulting in some exciting plans for collaborations and projects - watch this space! But this is only the beginning of our plans for Rêverie, we've so much more up our sleeves. So, until our next big announcement, grab a cuppa and a biscuit or three, and dive into our birthday issue...

I am one of three girls (both my sisters work with me now) and we grew up in Cumbria and then headed south after university. I began work immediately as a florist in Notting Hill. We now live about 200 yards from the shop….Handy!

You are known for a bohemian sensibility when it comes to floral arrangements. How would you describe Scarlet & Violet? S&V is a weird mix of classic and gentle with the odd touches of whimsy and eccentricity and I hope our flowers reflect that.
What is your training or background? I have a fine art degree but no specific floristry training. I worked as a florist for 15 years before I even got near to opening my own shop and learnt all I know on the job.
Where are you based? Kensal Rise in NW London.
How did you get your name out there when you first started the business? It is a very different thing when you deliver flowers all across London, as lots of people see flowers when they arrive in offices etc. So as long as all the flowers we send look great, then hopefully the phone rings. I didn’t want to start the shop with all guns blazing, as it was only me and a van so it was relatively low pressure to start and I could find my feet. We have also just been really lucky.
When would you say your love affair with flowers began? I wouldn’t say I have a love affair with flowers…. it’s a pretty tempestuous relationship… there are some days when the flowers are glorious and do all you want and others when they just don’t feel right. I don’t love all flowers; there are a few exceptions. I reckon it all began when I received my first hand-tied

Are there any florists, designers or artists who have influenced you and your work? It is hard not to be influenced by your surroundings. I am more influenced by paintings and fabrics than florists, though I do love looking at old flower books with the amazing arrangements they used to make. Do you provide flowers for destination weddings? We don’t work overseas and other than that we would always source our own flowers from our suppliers in order to guarantee quality. We have a great relationship with our suppliers and I wouldn’t trust anyone else. Describe a typical day at Scarlet & Violet. Long! Up at 5am to the market. Back to shop for 7.30/8. We all have tea and coffee on the go. Generally, the rule is whoever is late makes the drinks. There are between 5 and 8 of us at the shop everyday. Then we unload and condition all the flowers. All orders made (this goes on all day until the phone stops and we can move onto the next day). There are also jobs to install, vases to clean, customers to serve, site visits, wedding appointments. day - we tidy shop so that it looks like it should do at the beginning of the day! What tend to be your favourite flowers? The Britishgrown flowers I love the most. So the season from May to September when we have a variety of sweet peas, peony, delphinium, larkspur, alchemilla, scabious. Describe the creative process in selecting flowers for a wedding. Each wedding is different… but we tend not to show huge amounts of photographs and references. Rather have a look at the day, where it is, and then build up a picture of what flowers would be best suited for it. A lot of brides come in feeling uncertain and nervous but once we start to look at flowers and colours and vases and ribbons, they do definitely know what they like or don’t like. We are there to guide and advise, and I will suggest. How soon before a wedding should couples start the process with you? Some dates get booked up a year in advance and others can be confirmed two

weeks before, the most popular wedding months for us are May, June, July and September. Do you find that there is a typical Scarlet & Violet bride/couple? No not at all, which is brilliant! What would you suggest to a bride who is deadset on a particular flower but it is not in season at the time of her wedding? There is nothing I can do other than suggest the beautiful seasonal alternatives. There is always something amazing. The best thing to do is – if you love peonies, check the season and plan around that. What was the wackiest request that you ever received from a client? We don’t really do crazy!
What is or has been the biggest challenge in running a successful floristry business? The only downside is that I am never at home. What continues to inspire you? It’s easy to be happy and interested at work in the shop, as the flowers change every day…never the same bunch twice. Do you always have fresh flowers at home? Yes, but more often greenery or blossom branches, big and simple. If you weren’t a florist, what do you think you would like to be? No idea at all! I don’t think I could do anything else, I am very lucky.
What is your ideal wedding venue? A marquee with the sides open on a glorious day in the British countryside! Do you also provide other decorative props, such as vases and candles? We always use our own vases, candlesticks, candelabra, tea lights storm lanterns etc. What trends in wedding flowers are you loving right now? I love arrangements hanging up high, be they gypsophila, or hydrangea…just lovely. What trends in wedding flowers do you secretly wish would go away? Pew ends! If there is one expense that you recommend couples don't skimp on, what would that be? Being truly honest, other than the obvious flowers, I think that chairs and table linen can often make or break a room, if the chairs aren’t great at a venue...hire them in. What advice would you give to florists who are just now starting their own business? Work work work.

I have been planning, designing and producing events in New York City and around the world since 2001. I started my career in public relations, but quickly transitioned into events as I saw the industry developing in the marketplace. I studied English and Art History at the University of Pennsylvania, which is also where I met my husband of eleven years. We have two beautiful boys who are 5 and 8 and we all live happily in what I call my “petite palace” in New York City. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Spare time is a little hard to come by these days, but when I can steal a few moments, I love to get lost in TV and movies, the endless number of fabulous restaurants in NYC and to explore the City on foot. My kids have been skiing since they were 2 years old, so family ski trips are a must for us every winter. And, whenever I can, I absolutely love to set a beautiful table and entertain at home. What was the first event you ever planned? The first event I EVER planned was probably a Super Bowl 32 | R Ê V E R I E W I N T E R 2013
party for my youth group when I was about 12… From there, proms, socials, fundraisers, birthdays and more. I then planned many events under the PR umbrella... The first social event that I was ever paid to plan and design on my own was a 90th birthday party… The granddaughter of the birthday girl had invited her best friend to that party along with her fiancé. At the end of the birthday party, they approached me and asked if I would consider planning their wedding – so I booked my very first wedding from my very first party! It may be difficult for some couples to understand how fees are computed – could you help shed some light on this? I personally work on a flat-fee basis for all of my projects, which means that depending on the type and scale of an event, I establish a single fee at the outset of the project. I established this fee based on the amount of time, on average, it takes my team and I to produce an event of that scale.

It is actually more challenging for someone in my position to work on an event with a smaller budget… it is harder to do more with less, so therefore our fees are not related to the event expenditure, but instead to the overall complexity of the project. Tell us about the evolution and growth of Lindsay Landman Events. I worked on my own for the first 18 months or so. Then I hired an intern who, after 3 months, became my first full time employee. That was in 2003. In 2004, just before I was going to have my first child, I rented our first office space, which was what initially gave my growth a boost. Clients began to perceive our business differently once we were in a “real” office, so business grew. In 2009, I began to bring ALL of our décor production in-house and that is when my team really grew. Now, while I still only have 1 or 2 full time employees in the office at any given time, I have a team of 14 freelance artists, designers and production specialists along with 5 freelance planners on whom I rely to make our events come to life. There is a dramatic difference in our office between a week where we have an event and one where we don’t! 3 4 | R Ê V E R I E W I N T E R 2013
What would you say is one of the biggest lessons you have learned in running your business? There have been so many important lessons over the years… I think the thing that I need to remind myself every day is that in order to do what I do and be great at it, I need to demand excellence from everyone I work with all the time. There have been times where I have seen small errors – a wrinkle in a linen, a hole in a flower arrangement – and I have not corrected it for fear of pushing my team too far or aggravating a venue manager. Whenever this has happened, I have seen that error in photos (and in my dreams!) and regretted it again and again. I can’t afford to be timid about pushing for perfection. How do you start planning to decorate a wedding for a client? I always start with the reception tables and then work backwards to the ceremony. I first create a series of mood boards and colour palettes to help identify the overall vibe. Then, I begin to show them the more specific elements that would create that vibe – fabric swatches, vases, flowers, etc. I then create colour renderings of each space, so that they can truly visualize how each component will look. Finally, I create live samples of the dinner

tables and any other important elements. How do you come up with fresh and new ideas for each event? I get a lot of great ideas from shopping in home décor stores, exploring chic hotels and looking at creative window displays. One of my new year’s resolutions for 2013 was to take the time to explore more of the amazing museums and galleries in New York City… I just saw the Picasso Black and White exhibit at the Guggenheim and it sparked tons of new exciting ideas for upcoming projects. What is an area that you would encourage clients to invest in? Proper event lighting is crucial to creating the perfect ambience for an event, not to mention that it enhances every aspect of décor and environment. Lighting also makes your photographs better! You are also a working mother – how do you manage to achieve work-life balance with running your own business, managing a team and responding to client needs? I am not sure that I have a work-life balance! My family is extremely supportive of my work and my work colleagues are extremely supportive of my family life. Last summer, we had a huge celebrity event in East Hampton on a Saturday evening and the following day was my son’s visiting day at camp. I finished at about 2am and then got in my car and drove two and a half hours home to New York City so that I would be there in the morning to make it to the camp on time. I don’t know if that is finding balance or a one-way ticket to madness, but I do know that I wouldn’t miss that event and I wouldn’t miss that visiting day – at any cost. Take us through a typical day for you. I start my day in mommy-mode getting my boys up, dressed and ready for school. After I give them breakfast, make their lunches and drop them off, I usually 36 | R Ê V E R I E W I N T E R 2013
come back home to get ready for the day. Some days are in the studio with clients and vendors stopping by to meet with me and my team, and some days I am running around the City to venues or vendor appointments. If I do not have evening appointments, I leave the studio at 7pm and go home to hang out with my family. After the kids go to sleep, I usually spend another 2-3 hours on the computer working on my blog, writing contracts, doing budgets or researching. I’m a major night owl, so I get lots done in the late-night hours! Take us through a typical wedding day! Wedding days are long – I am usually on site for about 18 hours. I am the first to arrive and last to leave. I have two teams in play and I am looking after both. My planning team starts off wherever the client is and my production team starts off in our production studio finishing flowers and loading the trucks. So, I am back and forth between both locations and the venue checking in on everything… When things are pretty well set, I help facilitate formal photography… If I have a bridal dresser/stylist on my team for the day, I will leave the bride and groom with her, otherwise I freshen up the bride and bustle her dress. Once the dinner begins, my lead planner and I are running the timeline – cueing toasts and special dances, reminding the band of special requests, troubleshooting any issues with food service. [M] ost of our clients have after-hours parties. Once the reception begins and the after-hours starts, I then begin to oversee the breakdown of the room so that when the after-hours is finished, my work is almost done! After getting the clients in the car with all of their belongings, gifts and cake, I make sure my breakdown team is organized and ready to go to the warehouse to unload everything from the day and then – finally – my day is done. I crawl home with a million aches and pains, but so happy
and satisfied that we made someone’s dream of a perfect wedding come true! Are there any trends in weddings at the moment that you particularly like? A trend that I am seeing, and hopefully am a part of creating, is wedding décor inspired by home and commercial interiors. I am using a lot of patterned fabrics, lamps, upholstered furniture, mirrors, etc., that give an event space a very comfortable, home-like essence. And that you wish would disappear? I think every mason jar and antique typewriter on the planet has been sourced, used, photographed and blogged! What would be on your ideal wedding menu? I don’t think that most guests are that focused on the food at a wedding, so I like to take that opportunity to present unforgettable, noticeable food. If you give them delicious filet mignon, unless it is the most spectacular piece of beef they’ve ever had in their lives, they will eat it and then forget it. If they try a quail egg or a candied brussels sprout for the first time, they are going to remember it! Do you have any advice for couples now starting out with their wedding planning? One thing I see often is couples trying to cram every single thing they love into their wedding – and there isn’t always room. I promise you that as a married couple, you will have many more opportunities to entertain your family and friends, so instead of trying to do too much and spread your budget too thin, create a focused plan for your wedding incorporating the things that are most important to you and that will be most appreciated by your guests. Then, if there are elements that you didn’t get to incorporate in your wedding, save those in a special file or on Pinterest so when you are having a baby shower, a birthday party, an anniversary dinner or some other special event, you’ll be ready!

Two mutual friends saw a match in nature lovers Kim and Nelson and, naturally, conspired to set the two up. It did not take too much conniving – Kim and Nelson hit it off immediately. Since their friends made the introductions, they were together for over three years before they vowed to be together for the rest of their lives beneath one of Mother Nature’s grandest altars – in the middle of a forest of soaring redwood trees.
THESE HEELS WERE MADE FOR DANCING
When choosing the location for their wedding, Kim, a graphic designer, and Nelson, a search quality manager at Google, knew that a formal setting would not reflect their laidback sensibilities. To them, it would only feel right if they were outdoors and in the most relaxed setting imaginable. Nelson grew up in Santa Cruz and both he and Kim loved the area’s mountains and its tall redwood trees and felt in their hearts that their wedding location must be amongst nature. The Felton Guild could not have been more of a dream come true – so, on a day that boasted perfect temperatures in the high 70s, Kim and Nelson welcomed 235 guests to celebrate, relax and dine with them among the trees.

The Dress
Kim’s unique floral gown was custom made by her mother. “I had a hard time finding the right dress,” said Kim, “so I put a couple of dress designs together and I found the lovely fabric at Britex in San Francisco.” Originally assuming she would choose something traditional in ivory or white, Kim fell in love with the floral print and knew that it was the one. Complementing the floral pattern were her shoes – dark green suede open-toe heels with black sequins along the backs from Boutique 9.
The Bridal Crown
Kim found the perfect accessory to match her floral gown and the woodsy atmosphere – a headpiece made for her by Ferrari Florists in Santa Cruz made of ruscus branches. To further soften and romanticize the look, Kim’s younger sister Kristina added sprigs of baby’s breath to the headpiece. R Ê V E R I E W I N T E R 2013 | 45
The Stationery As
a graphic designer, Kim designed the wedding invitations and all the wedding day stationery herself. Reflecting the nature theme of the wedding, Kim incorporated

green and floral elements into their wedding invitations and also chose shapes that were freeflowing and organic. They wrapped rustic twine around the entire invitation suite to hold it together.

Wearing her stunning custom-made floral gown, Kim walked down the aisle with her father to the tune of The Magnetic Fields’ The Book of Love, performed by local guitarist Mike McCall. Nelson waited for her on the raised wooden stage aptly named “The Redwood Cathedral.” With their varied backgrounds, it was important to Kim and Nelson that they pay tribute to each of them, so they blended elements from Western, Vietnamese and Jewish traditions. Marrying them that day was The Honourable Judge Thang Barrett, a close family friend and the first Vietnamese judge of the United States. Initially nervous, their nerves soon melted away when it came time to stomp on the wine glass, per Jewish tradition. Nelson failed to break it on both the first and second tries. Everyone laughed and finally, when he broke it on his third stomp, the 235 guests broke into delightful applause. For Kim, “this really helped me lose my remaining nervousness before we had to walk down the aisle again in front of everyone” - this time to the guitarist’s rendition of The Beatles’ Here Comes the Sun - “as husband and wife.” R Ê V E R I E W I N T E R 2013 | 49

Cutting a sleek silhouette, Nelson wore a navy blue suit and black silk tie from Eli Thomas with dress shirt and silver tie clip from J. Crew. He polished off his look with Cole Haan dress shoes. The dashing groomsmen wore slim-figure charcoal suits from Jos. A Bank with blue-striped dress shirts, matching silver tie clips from J. Crew and black silk Cambridge ties. They each sported boutonnieres made from hypercurium berries tied with twine.
Her Supporting Ladies
Each of Kim's bridesmaids chose a style of full-length dress that they wanted in the colour "Ocean" from Amsale's silk chiffon collection.
Their Furry Relative
Kim and Nelson’s “nephew” Charlie, a golden-doodle, flew all the way from Chicago to be a part of their wedding. Their own dog, Henri, who is not as disciplined (though equally as loving), welcomed the newlyweds when they came back home.

The Favours
For their guests to take away as keepsakes, Kim and Nelson ordered custom notebooks from Scout Books that had their wedding logo printed on them, in which they also included a short personal message in the back. They presented these in muslin drawstring bags that also contained black pencils with Kim and Nelson’s names and their wedding date printed on them with metal pencil sharpeners.

After they exchanged vows it was time to celebrate in the forest. Hors d’oeuvres consisted of varieties of bruschetta and platters of cookies – from checkerboards, chocolate crackle, snickerdoodle swirls to raspberry cream sandwich cookies – and a gourmet cheese platter. At their fully stocked open bar, Kim and Nelson also encouraged guests to try one of their three favourite cocktails: an English Cosmopolitan, Strawberry Mojito and an Old-Fashioned. To Kim, the celebration was basically a “huge outdoor party, full of good food and good drinks, with all of our loved ones under a canopy of redwood trees – the funnest day of our lives!”

sat down at long wooden tables outside, decorated simply with wooden planter boxes with succulents and table runners that Kim and her sisters had also made. In this relaxed, natural environment, it was only fitting that they serve dinner family-style, starting with spinach salad with pancetta, candied walnuts and balsamic vinaigrette, grilled vegetables, lasagna and rib-eye steak served with a choice of gorgonzola or chimichurri sauce. Dessert was not just one, but eight different cakes. During their evening reception, one of Kim’s relatives from Vietnam recited a poem in Vietnamese that he had written just for Kim and Nelson. The newlyweds then took a turn on the dance floor to Take Care by Beach House. Their guests joined them long into the night, but with a quick break to eat a late-night snack of grilled cheese sandwiches. R Ê V E R I E W I N T E R 2013 | 55

Let Them Eat Wedding Cake
This wedding would be a dream come true to anyone with a sweet tooth: Kim and Nelson didn’t have just one wedding cake – but eight! The flavours included: two different lemon cakes with raspberry, vanilla bean and lemon curd frosting, three different whipped cream cakes with hazelnut, vanilla bean and fresh strawberry fillings and frostings, red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, and two bittersweet chocolate cakes with hazelnut buttercream, chocolate ganache, and espresso buttercream frosting.
Ice Ice Baby
No matter that it was warm and sunny in the middle of a California redwood forest, an ice sculpture depiction of Kim and Nelson made a striking personal touch to the festivities and remained frozen throughout the celebrations. Made by their friend, David Fong, a talented ice sculptor, the sculpture was based off a scrapbook project by Kim’s friend Kolina. The scrapbook depiction (and the sculpture) showcased a Shawnimals ninja character and a similarly shaped cat, reflecting both Nelson’s love for ninja figurines and Kim’s feline obsession. After their outdoorsy nuptials, Kim and Nelson took another plunge – they moved to Tokyo, Japan. While they put their original twoweek honeymoon to France and Switzerland on hold, they admit that the new adventure in Japan has been a “bit of a honeymoon itself!” R Ê V E R I E W I N T E R 2013 | 59

uring a summer break from university, Jess and John both took a job at a small country pub in Bath, England where they discovered that they had both gone to the same high school, but had never met. After that summer, John would return to Nottingham University while Jess finished her last year studying abroad in Milan. They travelled back and forth across Europe during their first year together and have been inseparable ever since. Exactly five years to the day of their first meeting, Jess, now a handbag buyer for a major high street retailer, and John, a risk manager for an oil

company, went for a walk during a weekend away in the Cotswolds. During the walk, they happened upon a 17th century mansion, Bibury Court, with an expansive lawn and decided to wander around the property. When Jess commented on how perfect it would be for a wedding, she genuinely had no idea that John had a ring in his pocket and was going to propose that very same day. They soon found a hilltop and set out a lunch picnic, the perfect moment for John, who got down on one knee and proposed with a radiant-cut diamond set in an art deco-inspired halo ring. They returned to Bibury Court the next day to have an official tour of the property as a newly engaged couple.

The Dress
Although she tried on many dresses during her search, Jess went back to the very first one that she tried on – a 1950s-inspired gown with a sweetheart neckline and silk organza skirt by Suzanne Neville. Purchased at the flagship Knightsbridge store, Jess’s dress was made to measure and “fit like a glove” on the day. An elegant dress needs elegant shoes and for Jess that meant a bespoke pair of the “Mate Claude” heels by Christian Louboutin, which had blue leather lining inside (her Something Blue).
The Jewels
Working in the fashion industry will undoubtedly mean having colleagues with impeccable taste. Jess’s colleagues in the jewelry team at her office pitched in to give her a sparkling wedding present: bespoke art deco-inspired earrings from Swarovski.
The Bouquet
Jess held a simple arrangement of pale pink peonies, her favourite flower. Pinned to the handle was her Something Borrowed – a brooch from her mother.

xactly 365 days after their engagement – making it exactly six years to the day since they first met – Jess and John got married in the village of Bibury. Their ceremony location – St. Mary’s Church, a village church dating back to the 13th century with Saxon and Norman foundations – was decorated with a mixture of hydrangeas, roses, peonies and eucalyptus. As John waited for her at the altar, Jess appeared in an elegant madeto-measure Suzanne Neville gown on the arm of her father. For them and their 80 guests, a friend of theirs, who is a professional cellist, had flown in from New York to perform for the ceremony. Jess and John also added more personal touches to the

Anglican program, including a reading from Jess’s sister of Hands Ceremony by an unknown author and they also asked John’s aunt, a soprano, to sing Pie Jesu during the service. In an especially touching moment, the vicar presiding over their ceremony read a special prayer – one that Jess and John had written themselves – to thank those who had come and to remember those who could not, particularly both Jess and John’s grandparents. As they exited the church, the flower girls, bridesmaids and guests all tossed handmade confetti, which Jess, with the help of her mother and cousin, had made from thousands of rose petals.

A Dashing Groom Cutting a fine silhouette, John wore a bespoke suit from Apsley Tailors. Hidden inside his Church’s shoes were pink and white candy-striped socks, matching the pink and white striped ties from TM Lewin that he and each of his groomsmen wore. They each pinned a pink rose boutonniere to their lapels.

Jess’s three bridesmaids wore kneelength Dessy dresses in pearl pink and held hydrangea nosegays tied with candy striped pink and white ribbons. As a thank you gift, Jess presented each of them with pale pink woven satin clutches with Swarovski clasps. Jess’s niece Florence held the prestigious position of flower girl, supporting the bride in a white dress from Debenhams with pink petal hem, wristband and flowers in her hair.

It wouldn’t be an English wedding without at least a tinkle of rain. Jess and John prepared for this in style with white parasols as they took the short walk to their reception from the church.

ollowing their Anglican ceremony, Jess and John led their guests on a short walk through a garden gate directly into Bibury Court. The English weather did not disappoint its reputation that day, but despite the showers earlier, the sky opened up just enough to allow all the outdoor activities that Jess and John had planned, including croquet on the lawn and fly-fishing along the stream.

The Escort Cards

fter enjoying outdoor activities and cocktails on the lawns, guests headed inside Bibury Court to sit for dinner, enjoying ham hock terrine with piccalilli and melba toast, chicken with pan-fried lemon gnocchi and a dessert of white chocolate mousse with passion fruit sorbet, before heading back outside to enjoy an evening barbecue of assorted grilled barbecue meats served with grilled sweet corn, jacket potatoes and salads. After all the decadent food, plus the wedding cake, it was time to let loose to the tunes from the live band, who kicked off the party with a rendition of Billy Joel’s She’s Always a Woman as Jess and John took a turn on the dance floor for the first time as husband and wife.

The Invitations
Jess wanted to have a vintage-chic style for their wedding in the Cotswolds and chose a candy-stripe theme for the invitations and other details for the wedding day. The invitations were bordered with a rococo frame and featured vintage illustrations of teapots, a quintessential English garden party icon.
A Sweetie Bar For those with a sweet tooth, the sweetie bar
provided just the right sugar boost that evening. Jess stamped each of the striped candy bags with their wedding logo.
A Striped Cake
Like the stripes on the fondant icing, the inside of the cake was just as striped – with separate layers of red velvet, white chocolate and raspberry, and marble sponge cake.

When your family has cultivated a vineyard and winery in Sonoma for generations, there is no place like home to throw the most enchanting wedding celebration full of natural beauty, good food and personalized wine. Photography by Allyson Wiley Words by Mary Lee Herrington
They were at a crossroads when they met. Joe had just recently moved to Los Angeles when they met through mutual friends in Santa Monica, shared a drink, and then a week later, Jessica packed her bags and moved to Utah. To some, this would have been the end of a short road, but to Joe, it was just the beginning. Never mind the distance, a month after Jessica moved, Joe asked her if he could take her out. He flew to Utah for their first date and the road to their future together stretched out before them.
For the next four years, Jessica and Joe balanced a long distance relationship while she finished her doctorate degree program. Never going longer than three weeks apart, they made the long distance work. Finally, Jessica, now a clinical psychologist, took up a residency post in San Diego and Joe, who works in real estate investment, relocated his work to San Diego. And after nearly five years since that first drink in Santa Monica, Joe proposed to Jessica with a two and half carat round-cut diamond ring. R ĂŠ V E R I E W I N T E R 2013 | 87

For their wedding, it was pretty indisputable that they already had access to a location that was heaven on earth – the Cuneo Green Acres Ranch, originally purchased by Joe’s greatgrandparents Joseph and Pierina Scarafoni in 1926. Since then, the ranch has seen four generations of Joe’s family growing grapes and producing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon on the property. Wine-making runs in the family on both sides – Joe’s other great-grandfather Samuel Sebastiani started Sebastiani Winery in downtown Sonoma in 1904. While Cuneo Green Acres was the perfect location for their wedding, it did involve considerable work to prepare it for the big day – decades of overgrown blackberry bushes, weeds and decomposed granite had to be cleared away as well as a bridge built over the property’s creek. They put in the work and the result was a vineyard property that was picture-perfect.

For an ethereal vineyard wedding, Jessica chose the perfect dress: the “Tango” by Elizabeth Fillmore. Letting her silk sheath gown take center stage, Jessica accessorized with Stuart Weitzman silver beaded sandals and a simple silver headband with a simple floor-length veil. For her Something Blue, she wore an aquamarine bracelet and ring.

When Jessica was browsing at one of her favourite shops in La Jolla, Mimi & Red’s, she spotted a dress design that she knew would be perfect for her bridesmaids. With the help of the shop owner, Jessica worked with the dress designer Deborah Viereck to create the very same dress style but in the dusty rose colour from her wedding colour palette.

With a landscape like Cuneo Green Acres, settling on a wedding theme was easy – Jessica and her wedding planner, Kelly McLeskey-Dolata, took inspiration from the property to come up with a letterpress stationery suite that evoked the magical and romantic quality of the vineyard. The stationery was cream with an off-centered blush pink oak tree – a motif that echoed throughout the wedding day decorations.

on a mixture of benches and wrought-iron chairs, Joe and Jessica’s 320 guests watched as she walked down the burlap aisle runner on the arm of her father to Pachelbel’s Canon in D. Marrying them on that sunny late afternoon was Reverend Peadar Dalton who stood with Jessica and Joe at the top of the “altar” – two old beautiful oak trees that were draped with 98 | R Ê V E R I E W I N T E R 2013
lanterns and ribbons. As a surprise to Jessica and Joe, both sisters on each side chose their own readings: a reading on friendship by an unknown author and a passage from Louis de Bernières’s Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. After Jessica and Joe exchanged their own personal vows to each other, they walked down the aisle as husband and wife to Vivaldi’s Spring from The Four Seasons.

the guests followed Joe and Jessica across a footbridge over the property’s creek to enjoy cocktail hour and the evening reception in a 100-foot-long tent. As they sipped on the signature cocktails called The Blushing Bride and a Groom-tini, they also enjoyed the delicious canapés: ahi tuna poki cones, prawn spiedini, smoked pulled pork served on corn crisps, and cheeseburger sliders on hand-stamped buns served with crispy fries served in paper cones. When it was time for dinner, guests walked along a pathway lined with candlelit storm lanterns and hand-painted direction signs. They found their seat assignments in frames listing each name alphabetically and hung from vintage iron gates. To provide guests with continual surprises throughout the evening, Jessica and Joe’s wedding planner Kelly McLeskey-Dolata took care of all the finer details, including glass top tables and elegant lounge furniture, spot lighting illuminating the oak trees, and hiring professional shoe shiners, who treated guests to a quick dust-off before entering the tent.

The wedding feast that evening would satisfy any gourmet palette. Each table started with antipasti of cured Italian meats including prosciutto, dry-cured salami and coppa served with baby artichokes, a selection of olives and gran padano cheese. They then enjoyed organic baby green salad with Sonoma goat cheese, grilled pear, candied walnuts and citrus rice wine vinaigrette. The main course was familystyle: organic heirloom tomato caprese, grilled Capay Valley organic vegetables, including zucchini, Japanese eggplant, crimini mushrooms, wild fennel and Crook Neck squashes, and fresh caramelized onion and red chard ravioli, angus tenderloin served with pure horseradish and grilled Pacific red salmon served with tomato beurre blanc relish and mango-papaya salsa. THE CENTERPIECES Adding to the lushness of the vineyards, Jessica and Joe alternated two different centerpiece designs. Half featured cream hydrangea, blush “Café Au Lait” dahlias, cream Vendela roses, David Austin garden roses, light peach roses, double petal lisianthus, dusty miller, peach stock and blush Sahara roses, displayed in vintage compote dishes and set on top of a lace and cotton riser. The other stunning centerpieces included trios of vintage cream urns with the same flowers, grouped together on the tables.

Despite both attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Ashley and Greg did not meet until years later when both had relocated to Manhattan and attended a mutual friend’s New Year’s Eve party. As they rang in a new year, Ashley “poked fun at Greg – and he was hooked.” With a new year ahead of them, they soon went on a date and spent the rest of that year, and all the new years thereafter, together. Exactly four years to the day of their first meeting, Greg took Ashley to snowy Central Park and proposed. They rang in that new year as a newly engaged couple with celebratory cocktails at a friend’s apartment and dinner out in the city.

hen they were scouting locations for their nuptials, Ashley, who works for a small investment bank, and Greg, who recently joined the New York law firm of Davis, Polk & Wardwell LLP, knew that it had to be near the ocean. For Ashley, this was particularly significant, having grown up spending summers on Chesapeake Bay in her parents’ sailboat and docking it at local towns to eat steamed Maryland blue crabs, corn on the cob and ice cream. Revisiting the town of St. Michael’s years later, Ashley just knew: “as soon as I drove up the driveway, I knew that it was where I wanted to get married.” R Ê V E R I E W I N T E R 2013 | 113

uring the entire engagement, Ashley and Greg lived apart due to her work in New York and Greg attending law school and living back in Chapel Hill. By the time May 19th 2012 rolled around, exactly a week after Greg graduated from law school, they could hardly contain the anticipation that had been built over the years of their engagement. Their wedding festivities at The Inn at Perry Cabin was in fact a nonstop weekend party – starting with welcome cocktails, breakfast on Saturday, a poolside lunch, the official wedding ceremony and celebrations, to an after-party that night, followed by a brunch the next morning. “I wanted people to feel like they came to a big party,” said Ashley, “and we happened to get married.”

z the dress Ashley wore the perfect dress for an elegant nautical celebration – a one-shoulder lace gown by Oscar de la Renta. She accessorized with blue and white polkadotted heels from BHLDN (her “Something Blue”) and a cathedral-length veil purchased from Bergdorf Goodman. Tucked into her hair was a sparkly hair clip from her maid of honour (her “Something Borrowed”).
The bouquet Ashley held a classic bridal bouquet of white ranunculus surrounded by baby’s breath. The handle was wrapped with extra fabric from the sash of her Oscar de la Renta dress.
the jewels Allowing the Oscar de la Renta dress to take center stage, Ashley’s wedding day jewelry provided beautiful accents to the ensemble. She wore diamond drop earrings from Kenneth Jay Lane and her maternal grandmother’s engagement ring on her right hand (a gift from her mother and her “Something Old”). And of course her engagement ring from Greg – an asscher-cut diamond with side trapezoids set in platinum.
her bridal party Ashley’s bridesmaids each wore vibrant coral dresses from Jenny Yoo in kneelength styles and shoes of their choosing and each held nosegays of white peonies, which popped against their coral dresses. dapper gentlemen Greg and his groomsmen all embraced the wedding’s nautical theme with navy blazers, khaki trousers and light blue and white pocket squares and striped ties in the colours of his and Ashley’s alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
the stationery Ashley fully embraced the task of designing unique invitations and stationery with Mr. Boddington’s Studio. “The invitations are so important because they are the first impression of your wedding and they set the tone,” noted Ashley. “I wanted them to be crisp and clean, but memorable – nautical, but elegant.” The result was gorgeously crafted invitations with a colour palette of navy, white and a hint of coral. Ashley and Greg also used the reply cards as their guestbook – “it is so fun to read the little notes people wrote to us expressing their anticipation for the wedding.”

hen Ashley walked out on the arm of her father, it was a clear 72 degree day with a slight breeze from the waterfront. Their 220 guests sat in seats outside overlooking the bay and watched as The Very Reverend Gregory L. Powell married Ashley and Greg. After they were blessed and pronounced husband and wife, Ashley and Greg walked out to the tune of Forever in Blue Jeans by Neil Diamond (a favourite among their families), performed acoustically by their blue grass band.

Following the ceremony, guests walked to the inn, where Ashley and Greg hosted a Southern house party style reception – lots of cocktails and lots of bite-sized local foods. The cocktail hour included hors d’oeuvres that would sate any palette: pigs-in-ablanket, mini-grilled manchego and Serrano ham sandwiches, and grilled zucchini with goat cheese all washed down with plenty of champagne.

nstead of the traditional three-course seated meal,
Ashely and Greg decided to have a special menu created with tables and bars overflowing with local seafood and Southern dishes. On offer were fully stocked raw bars with oysters, shrimp and clams and steamed mussels and whole rockfish (a native Chesapeake Bay fish). Adding a Southern touch to the menu were French fries with herbs and parmesan, crab cakes, biscuits, hush puppies and a shrimp and grits bar. To honour Greg’s Italian heritage, they also provided a fully stocked charcuterie table, complete with meats, cheeses and marinated vegetables. To finish, guests enjoyed a dessert table full of chocolate bonbons, gourmet American cheeses and fruits.
THe cake A fully stocked dessert bar was not enough – Ashley and Greg’s wedding cake and groom’s cake provided even more delectable delights. Their classic wedding cake was a white sponge with mocha mousse and buttercream icing, while the groom’s cake was yellow cake with chocolate filling.

etting the evening party underway, Ashley and Greg’s first dance was to the tune of Michael Bublé’s Everything. Their live evening band got everybody on their feet for the rest of the night.
After a relaxed brunch with their guests the next morning, Ashley and Greg set off on their mini-moon – a one-night stay in Atlantic City before Greg hunkered down to study for the bar exam. They even won a little money at the roulette table playing their wedding date numbers 5 and 19. After Greg took the bar exam later that summer, they finally went on their honeymoon – a week in Maui followed by four nights in Napa Valley.
THe getaway car The newlyweds made their exit in true style when they hopped into a 1970s classic Jaguar, the very same car that Ashley’s parents drove as their getaway car at their wedding in 1977.

Like a scene out of Grey’s Anatomy, for Lisa and Michael when they met in an operating room. Michael, an anesthesiologist and pain management doctor, filled in for another doctor that day when Lisa, a surgical assistant and dance instructor, had scrubbed in. Lisa was immediately struck by Michael’s charm, sense of humour and gentle way with the patients, “and it didn’t hurt that he was extremely handsome and had these amazing bright blue eyes.” It had been nine years since that fateful meeting in the operating room when Lisa and Michael wed at the Hotel Bel-Air on July 29th 2012. For these Santa Monica residents, it was important to host their guests in the Los Angeles area but with an outdoor garden wedding that evoked a French country garden ambiance.

For a midday garden wedding, Lisa chose the perfect ethereal dress and veil by Claire Pettibone, which she paired with gold-studded Valentino heels. 13 4 | R ĂŠ V E R I E W I N T E R 2013
For Lisa and Michael, they felt that they had been together for so long that it would not feel right to be separated the night before the wedding, so they spent the night together as they always do: as a family with Luc, their beloved dog. In the morning, they got ready for the wedding together, which was captured by their photographer, Elizabeth Messina. Michael even climbed up to retrieve Lisa’s hanging dress from a tree and helped Lisa into it. “The experience was very playful and fun,” said Lisa. They finished their couple’s portrait session prior to the start of the ceremony.

Lisa’s stunning engagement ring includes a round-cut yellow sapphire flanked by side diamonds on a yellow gold band. For their wedding rings, Lisa and Michael chose classic tungsten and gold bands that matched beautifully with her engagement ring. For Lisa and Michael, the task of bearing the rings for the ceremony could only be entrusted to a special member of their family who brings them constant joy: their dog, Luc. “One of the moments that brought a smile to everyone’s face was when Michael’s nephew walked Luc down the aisle.” For this special day, Luc wore a garland of lavender and vines, and their other two attendants wore seersucker suits.

At 11.30am on Sunday, July 29th 2012, 100 guests arrived at the Hotel Bel-Air gardens and were greeted with parasols and chamomile mint iced tea that were accented with sprigs of fresh lavender. As it was a late morning ceremony, trays of breakfast hors d’oeuvres were served as guests picked out fan programs and yarmulkes from a vintage china cabinet. Guests found their seats and beheld the white gazebo that was beautifully accented with smilax, English ivy, maiden hair fern, dahlias, roses and Queen Anne’s lace which framed the hand-held four-post chuppah.
a ceremonial performance
Passionate about dance, Lisa asked her friend, dancer and choreographer Jennifer Hamilton, to choreograph a piece of contemporary dance for her guests to take in before the ceremony commenced. Not to miss a beat, Lisa and her sister hid behind bushes to watch the performance – “the raw emotion the dancers exuded made both of us cry. True beauty!”

The stunning blue ketubah, which featured the quote from the Song of Songs, “I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine," was inspired by the story of a 14th century rabbi whose ink froze while writing a treatise and went on to finish by cutting out the letters.
As Michael stood by the chuppah, Lisa was escorted down the aisle by her mother and step-father as her friend Bryon Friedman performed Alexi Murdoch’s Love You More on his guitar. Their beautiful Jewish ceremony was filled with personal choices and touches – instead of the traditional seven blessings that are read out loud, Lisa and Michael chose to have several of their guests stand and each say a blessing, and they also prepared their own personal vows. And as newly pronounced husband and wife, Lisa and Michael walked down the grassy aisle to a tune that was also a light-hearted inside joke – an instrumental version of Michael’s favourite 80’s hair metal band, Whitesnake, and their song Slide It In, which, due to the suggestive title was referred to in the program simply as 'The Whitesnake Song'. On this funny and celebratory note, Lisa and Michael led their guests up to the front lawn of the Bel-Air to enjoy cocktail hour and a game of croquet. As guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres of mini prime beef sliders with aged white cheddar, onion marmalade on a brioche bun, pizza blanco with fresh basil, ricotta and mozzarella, sautéed shrimp skewers and Maryland blue crab fritters.
a summer garden party
Lisa and Michael’s wedding planner Allyson Levine created an overall wedding design that transported guests, including actress Jennifer Grey and her husband, actor Clark Gregg, to what was like a timeless French country garden with wooden bentwood chairs, white parasols, croquet, white ottomans and florals in soft palettes of blues, pinks and greens. It was the perfect casual ambiance for a summer luncheon on the lawn. To Lisa and Michael, they felt that the atmosphere was like a metaphor for their relationship – “something fresh, open, carefree and delicate in nature.”

To signal the start of the lunch reception, a threepiece band invited Lisa and Michael for their first dance, to a cover of the the classic Bob Dylan song To Make You Feel My Love. Lisa and Michael then joined their guests at small round tables under market umbrellas to enjoy a relaxed lunch of wild arugula salad with marinated artichokes, shaved parmesan and herb vinaigrette, baby beets with goat cheese, hazelnuts and sherry vinaigrette, followed by a choice between Alaskan halibut with summer squash, zucchini puree, Nicoise olives and tomato basil, sweet corn tortellini or the pan-seared chicken with market vegetables and Yukon gold potato puree. For dessert, guests enjoyed the couple’s favourite cookie – the classic black & white – and an array of cupcakes, including dark chocolate, red velvet, lemon with whipped cream and coconut Italian cream cake.

Lisa saved the best for last at the cake cutting. As a secret Katy Perry fan, Michael had been caught dancing to the song Firework around the house. As a surprise gift to him, Lisa organized a performance to the song by asking a friend to help choreograph a dance, which she filmed and sent to all of their guests to learn before the big day. The day before the wedding, she and all of the guests had a secret rehearsal to get the steps right. When it came to cut the cake, “family and friends, young and old, all 100 guests participated” in the choreographed flash mob dance. To this day, Michael says that it was the “most memorable gift” he has ever received.

In keeping with the French country garden theme, for their wedding cake, Lisa and Michael chose a traditional French croquembouche. Set on top of the tower were cake toppers ordered from The Netherlands and symbolizing their nickname for each other – bride and groom bears, with a top hat for the groom bear and a blusher for the bride bear. welcome bags
With many of their guests coming in from out of town, Lisa and Michael wanted to welcome each of them to the area and get them excited for the wedding. They provided canvas bags printed with their names and wedding date and filled them with tourist maps of Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, chocolate chip cookies, water, sun block, more of their favourite snacks, and suggestions on what to do while in town.
the vow
Lisa and Michael both wrote their own vows to each other. As a wedding gift to Michael, Lisa had calligrapher Teresa Walsh pen the vows on linen paper with hand torn edges.
the invitation
Lisa and Michael’s wedding invitations showcased a gold beehive motif, symbolizing the nickname that they have for each other - “Bear” - and a bear’s favourite food – honey. They also noted in their invitation suite that since it would be in a garden setting, shoes were optional. In lieu of traditional gifts, they asked guests to donate to their favourite charity, the Jewish National Fund.

A N N A' S P I C K S When we were first engaged we dreamed of a chic city wedding, and while I do adore a decadent offwhite dinner jacket, London certainly isn't the place to be seen in one! This would have been my idea of Bean's ready-to-wear ensemble. Manly, stylish without being trend driven but still extremely chic.

BEAN'S PICKS I've started with a three-piece checked suit with fairly extravagant Tom Ford-esque peaked lapels. Too may patterns would look overly fussy so I've gone for a classic white shirt and linen pocket square with a plain silver grey or burgundy tie, though in grenadine silk to add a bit more texture and interest to the outfit. To finish off, a pair dark brown double monk-strap shoes with a matching belt.

Tru took me to a bed & breakfast weekend at Mohonk Mountain House in Hudson Valley. It was in April but suddenly it started snowing so the next day the entire place was covered in a blanket of snow. So beautiful and unexpected. Spent the time just relaxing, hiking and at the spa.
For our first anniversary, Margaux and I had a quiet dinner at our favourite Italian restaurant in Los Angeles. It was a few days before embarking on a month long trip (New York, London, Ireland), so we knew we wanted to do something low-key. It couldn't have been more perfect.

Phil and I decided to celebrate our 1st anniversary somewhere warm and full of sunshine, and having seen some amazing photographs of the Amalfi coast, we decided to book a few nights in Positano, with a few day trips in the surrounding area. Our most memorable day trip was to Ravello, a tiny village high up in the mountains, with the most spectacular view of the Med. Our trip was full of amazing food, lazy afternoons by the pool, refreshing lemon granitas and lots and lots of photographs!

Alexis Cuddyre & Jack Simkin OMG I’m Getting Married
Jack and I spent our first year of marriage renovating and decorating our home together. It was a pretty testing time as there were months where we lived our day to day lives with our cat in our tiny second bedroom with just a microwave and mini fridge. I decided pretty early on that I wanted to document our life together so that we could look back and remember all the different milestones in our lives. I think it was probably a week after receiving our wedding photos that I asked Marianne if we could schedule an anniversary shoot and here it is – in our newly renovated & decorated home!

For our 1st year anniversary we decided to go back to our honeymoon spot, El Jardin Eco Retreat in Mexico, where they were hosting a horticulture workshop. The retreat consisted of learning about eco systems and sustainable plants in the area. The experience was exactly what we needed at the time because right before our anniversary, I got laidoff from my job, not what we had planned. During the trip, I remember I thinking, what am I going to do when I get back? Six months later, 100 Layer Cake happened. This picture reminds me that that man standing next to me is my rock, and that with him in my life, I can achieve anything.
Our first anniversary, crumbs. I guess we should be honest. We woke up on the Sunday morning and we were rather busy packing to move house and, well, we forgot all about it. No presents, no cards and certainly no champagne! At least we both forgot. Luckily, we are in good company, Bean's parents often forget their own anniversary, to be reminded each year by Bean's Aunt sending them a card. After almost 45 years, they are still deliciously in love (and incredibly sweet with it).

Lily Allen & Sam Cooper In the spirit of our beautiful cover image by Elizabeth Messina on our one-year anniversary and the launch of Rêverie Bébé, we thought this time our Past Rêverie should include a bun in the oven – and we couldn’t think of a more beautiful bride-and-mum-to-be than Lily Allen. The happy couple had had a bittersweet year – but despite the ups and downs, it ended on a high when they became engaged during their Christmas holidays in Bali. On her wedding day, Lily Allen wore the “Raphael” lace gown by Delphine Manivet and matching French bridal cap and veil, also by Delphine Manivet. The gown had 3/4-lace sleeves and room for her growing bump. About 12 weeks pregnant at the time, she wore white platform five-inch heels by Rupert Sanderson. Sam wore a navy suit, grey tie and simple white rose boutonniere. During speeches that evening at their country estate, her new husband reportedly made an official announcement to their guests that they were expecting. For their honeymoon, Lily and Sam went to Glastonbury, where they had arranged for two luxury £1,000 teepees to camp in with family and friends. Later that November, Lily and Sam welcomed a healthy baby girl, whom they named Ethel. The couple also recently welcomed their second daughter, Marnie Rose.
