ust looking in the large shop windows you know there’s nothing ordinary about Palazzo Kids. When we had a peek, there were fanciful designer lamps made of feathers and handmade metal trunks from India in bold colours of pink, orange and lime... so naturally, curiosity led us inside... Owner Laurence Noël was looking for that special something when she wanted to dress her own children, but the French native who moved here a decade ago didn’t find what she was looking for in Luxembourg. That’s why she decided to open up her own store. “We have 96 different brands,” she says, “and all of them are exclusive.” Bellerose, Canada Goose, Barbour, Oeuf NY, Petit Nord, Sœur, Little Paul & Joe, Antik Batik, Interdit de me gronder... just to name a few! These are brands known for their quality and fashion flair. This autumn, Noel predicts that a lot of kids will be sporting skinny jeans paired with sleeveless furs vests, very much inspired by the 1960s. “The brand Notify is top for jeans,” she advises. Clothes are sorted by brand, so that fans can easily find their favorites and discover new ones.
Cool to mix and match “For children, it’s important that clothes are easy to move in, comfortable, and warm when the weather is cool,” Noël says. “Even though my customers might very well be able to afford it, they usually don’t come in and buy a whole outfit from one brand. People like to mix and match. It’s very fashionable, very ‘rock’. Take, for example, fake leather pants or worn-in jeans matched with a real cashmere sweater, that’s very chic, it’s a very cool look.” And at Palazzo Kids, you’ll find plenty of accessories to complete the look, whether they be handmade shoes for little two-year old princesses, or a peace sign necklace for trendy teens. Stéphanie Belviso, Little V.I.P.
Although she’s responsible for the Little V.I.P. store in the city centre, Stéphanie Belviso looks like she could still wear the clothes she sells. The charming Belviso says that the store stocks everything from Guess, “more for everyday, and at interesting prices”, to Gucci “which resembles the adult collection, but adapted for children.” In fact, “we have more than 20 brands and most of them we have exclusively,” she says. Her favorites include the colourful, playful designs by Sonia Rykiel and the finely detailed and fun fashion by Britain’s Paul Smith.
Djouher Ouzzani, boutique Petit Bateau
Going to Petit Bateau before the new school year “is something passed on in families, shopping here is a tradition,” says Djouher Ouzzani, a mother of four boys who has tried and tested the clothing she now sells. “An enormous number of people come to buy underwear,” she says, “because they are 100% cotton, they don’t ride up or move, they’re comfortable and durable.” Of course it is also a line of clothing “which is as classic as it is modern,” but as far as covering the very basics, you just can’t miss this boat!
