It may surprise some to learn that Julian once was home to an important African American community. African American, Fred Coleman, discovered the gold that began the rush to Julian in 1870. Albert and Margaret Robinson built and ran the Hotel Robinson, frequented by many prominent citizens of the time. America Newton, a black washer woman who homesteaded 80 acres west of town, became a local celebrity and a stretch of road leading to town has been known ever since as America Grade. You’ll be joined by a knowledgeable historian who will introduce you to this unique story of Julian’s past and the influence that African Americans had here. Having grown up all his life in Julian as a fourth generation Julian resident, he is an expert on the subject and a captivating storyteller.

THE TEMECULA VALLEY MUSEUM

The Temecula Valley Museum contains exhibits that rep­ resent life in the Temecula Valley through time and dif­ ferent cultures that influenced the development of the area. The main history exhibit, The Temecula Valley Story, displays handcrafted artifacts, cultural items, ranching and farming equipment, documents, photo­ graphs, and more. The museum also owns over 6,000 of Perry Mason author and longtime Temecula resident, Erle Stanley Gardner’s, photographs and a vast collection of memorabilia.

Groups of all ages come to the Hacienda to learn about these amazing ani­ mals, their colorful his­ tory and their luxurious and rare fiber. You’ll have an opportunity to hand feed the alpacas and take part in making a craft from alpaca fur to take home with you.

This 3­3.5 hour cruise will take you through the wa­ ters of the Santa Barbara Channel. The Channel Is­ lands National Marine Sanctuary and the Channel Islands National Park. This area of the ocean is known to have more marine mammals in its waters than any other area on the planet. Traveling from the mainland to the island of Anacapa you may see Harbor Seals, California Sea Lions, Humpback, Gray, Blue or Orca Whales. Common Dolphins, Pacific White­sided and Risso's Dolphins may also be sighted on these excursions.

We will also cruise the rugged shoreline of Anacapa Island. Cruising Anacapa Island you will see the famous Arch Rock that is the insignia for the park as well as the seals and sea lions that make their home on the shore be­ neath the high cliffs. Anacapa Island is home to one of the largest breeding populations of Brown Pelicans on the west coast. Western Gulls breed on all three islets of Anacapa, forming the largest breeding colony of Western Gulls in the world. Birds abound in the water, on the land and in the skies around Anacapa Island.

Because of Mr. Kellogg’s love of nature, the house was placed on a hill to take full advantage of the Pomona Valley panorama. Quick to recognize the value of hands­ on “learning by doing,” he decided to donate his home and world famous Arabian horse ranch to an educational institution. The university as we know it today, is Cal Poly Pomona.

THE GETTY VILLA THE GETTY VILLA

The J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa in Malibu serves as an international educational center dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. The Getty Villa houses the J. Paul Getty Museum's collection of approximately 44,000 Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities. Over 1,200 works are on view in 23 galleries devoted to the permanent collection, with five additional galleries for changing exhibitions. With objects dating from 6,500 B.C. to A.D. 400, the collection contains monumental sculptures as well as artifacts of everyday life such as vases, coins, sculpture, and jewelry.

Like a giant genie’s slipper, the black gondola glides across tranquil Alamitos Bay, a gondolier rhythmically pushing one oar. With the sun sparkling off the calm waters, he croons “O Sole Mio” as his passengers sit back and relax, bound for the wind­sheltered waterways of Naples Island, where million­dollar homes and docked yachts line the canals. Ever since the fleet of Venetian boats were launched off Long Beach 20 years ago, more than 400 young men and women have donned gondoliers’ straw hats, black pants and striped T­shirts. Some are opera stu­ dents. Others are schoolteachers. Others just have a love of the Italian traditions and music. Now in it’s 35th year, the “Pageant of Our Lord” is pre­ sented annually during the Easter season by Rolling Hills Covenant Church. Over 200,000 people have enjoyed Pag­ eant of Our Lord. Each year, fifteen art pieces are pre­ sented by live models with magnificent orchestrations from a 60­voice choir and original narration to lead the au­ dience on a unique journey through Christ’s life. Kimberly Crest, a picturesque French chateau style home built in 1897, is a well preserved example of the Victorian Era in California. The 7,000 square foot, three­story chateau sits on a six and one quarter acre estate. The house was built in 1897 for Mrs Cornelia A. Hill, one of the pioneers of Redlands. In 1905, John Alfred Kimberly, a co­founder of the Kimberly­Clark paper company, pur­ chased the home to escape the Wisconsin winters, giving the family name to the property. When the Kimberly fam­ ily purchased the property in 1905, Mrs Kimberly had the Italian gardens installed on the property. On your guided tour of the estate, you’ll take a peek inside and stroll through the gardens with a docent.

What began back in 1890 as an event that drew 2,000 people to watch a parade of flower­covered carriages, today is one of the most watched events around the world. The Rose Parade’s elaborate floats have come a long way since the Tournament’s first procession down Colorado Boulevard. Today, float building is a multi­million dollar business. You’ll get the chance to immerse yourself in the festivities at the Rose Parade as you see the float construction in progress. TULE ELK NATURAL RESERVE GUIDED TOUR AT THE TULE ELK RESERVE

Tule Elk State Natural Reserve protects a small herd of tule elk, once in danger of extinction. We’ll be joined by a park ranger as we set out to view these amazing ani­ mals in this natural habitat. Elk from the reserve have been suc­ cessfully transplanted to other areas in California, and today nearly 4000 tule elk are again free roaming the foothills and grasslands of California. The elk are most active from late summer through early autumn. Visitors are encour­ aged to bring binoculars for better viewing.

Since 1968, Old Town Music Hall has been showing vintage silent and sound films, and presenting live concerts by some of the world's finest performers of jazz, ragtime, and popular music from the past. Silent films are accompanied by the Mighty Wurlitzer, a massive 1925 wind­powered pipe organ that has been meticulously pre­ served so that silent classics can be experi­ enced with live musi­ cal accompaniment, just as they did when they were first shown.
