What graduates are saying “Looking back at the last five years here at the University of Maine, I can’t help but think about how much I have changed as an individual because of the amazing opportunities and lifelong lessons associated with being a studentathlete. Words cannot express how fortunate and privileged I feel to have been able to represent the University of Maine hockey team and wear its jersey out onto the ice. I will continue to hold close the great memories and extraordinary friendships for the rest of my life.” — Mark Nemec Men’s Ice Hockey “My time here at the University of Maine has truly been one of the greatest experiences of my life. I came to this school never imagining the journey I would have as a student-athlete. Being a part of athletics and academics here at the university has made me who I am today. I will forever be grateful for all of the support I have received from the UMaine faculty, my coach Mark Lech, my family, and most importantly, my lovely teammates. Looking back on my time here I can say I have no regrets; I feel lucky to have been given the opportunity to represent UMaine and I will continue to do so in one way or another for the rest of my life.” — Corey Conner Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country “These past four years as a Black Bear student-athlete have been the best years of my life. The friendships and memories I have made with my teammates and classmates will be cherished forever. It has been an honor to play the sport I love, for the school I love for four amazing years. Once a Black Bear, always a Black Bear — GO BLUE.” — Michael Fransoso Baseball “When I started here four years ago, I could have never anticipated how much of a life-changing experience being a UMaine student-athlete would be. The biggest lesson I have learned from my time here is the value of hard work and dedication, and I have come to learn that those two words epitomize University of Maine athletics. I have had the opportunity to play amongst, meet, and be inspired by some incredible athletes and coaches, and the things I will take away from this place stretch far beyond the classroom. My fondest memories will always be those shared on and off the field with my teammates.” — Madelaine Hill Women’s Soccer

Ted Woodward

Maine Men’s Basketball ∞ 2013-14 Media Guide

H ea d Coac h • B uc k ne l l ’ 8 6 N inth S ea son at M a i ne Ted Woodward enters his 10th season as the Head Coach at Maine and his 18th year overall as a Black Bear in Orono, Maine. Woodward brings 27 years of Division I basketball experience at UConn, Harvard University, and Central Connecticut State University in addition to his time at UMaine. He was named Head Coach of the Black Bears on August 31, 2004, the 20th Basketball Head Coach in the University of Maine’s history. “We are pleased to name Ted as our next men’s basketball Head Coach, said former UMaine (and now present GWU, AD, Patrick Nero), upon his hiring. “Ted shares the priorities that we have for our athletic programs. He understands the high value we put on education, citizenship and the desire for our student-athletes to excel athletically.” Ted Woodward began his coaching career as a graduate assistant to Hall-of-Fame Coach Jim Calhoun at the University of Connecticut in 1986. He remained on the UConn staff through the 1989 season. While at UConn, the Huskies won the 1988 NIT Championship, igniting the program to national prominence and decades of outstanding success. “Coach Calhoun was a great mentor to me, an outstanding coach and person, and provided me a wonderful learning experience in basketball and college athletics,” said Woodward. While in Storrs, Woodward also earned his Master’s degree in Education (Athletic Administration) in 1989. Woodward then moved onto becoming a full-time assistant coach at Harvard University, where he served for Coach Peter Roby for 2 seasons in Cambridge. While at Harvard, Woodward also served as the Director of Athletic Promotions. Following his stint at Harvard, Woodward moved onto Central Connecticut State University as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Mark Adams. At CCSU, the program set a Division I era record for wins in 95-96. In 1996, Woodward began his service at the University of Maine, arriving in Orono to be Coach John Giannini’s top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, and eventually the Associate Head Coach of the UMaine program. At Maine, the Black Bears went onto post their top-two winning seasons in the history of the school including a school-record 24 wins in the 1999-2000 season. In addition, UMaine finished as America East Championship Runner-Ups twice from 1999-2004. During that span from UConn to UMaine, Woodward coached, recruited and helped develop 5 players who went onto the NBA, and several more who played professionally in Europe. Woodward was recognized by his peers by Rivals100hoops.com and theInsidershoops.com surveys at the time as one of the top assistant coaches in the country. He also was a specially invited guest of the International Basketball Academy, in Pula, Yugoslavia, and the Portuguese Basketball Coach’s Association, and was an invited guest to other camps and clinics at various times during his career. Now in his 18th year in Orono, Woodward has been a part of more basketball contests than anyone in Black Bear history other than former coach and player Skip Chappelle. As the Head Coach at Maine: • Has led Maine to their third highest win-total in any season (19) in 2009-10 • Led the Black Bears to consecutive third-place finishes in 2009-10 and 10-11. That marked the only 2nd time in the past 20 years where Maine had finished that high in the standings in consecutive seasons • Was chosen as the CollegeInsider.com 2009-10 America East Coach of the Year • Was selected as a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man-of-the-Year Award. The national award is given annually to recipients who embody success on the court as well as “high moral integrit” off the court, as well on. • Led the Black Bears to wins over 2 BCS opponents, Boston College and Penn State. The win over BC was the first for Maine in 85 years and the only win by an America East team over an ACC team that season • Has posted a 4-2 record v. Atlantic 10 teams including wins over URI (twice), UMass, and Fordham. Maine’s three wins over the Atlantic 10 over the past four years leads the America East in that category • Has led the Black Bears to one of just four teams in the America East who has posted a cumulative .500 or better conference record over the past four years (since 2009-10 season)

AMHERST, Mass.-The University of Maine men’s baketball team defeated the University of Massachusetts by the score of 68-56 on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. With the win, Maine is now 3-5 on the year while UMass suffers just its second loss and now stands at 7-2. Maine was led by America East Player of the Game Malachi Peay (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who had 10 points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals. Gerald McLemore (San Diego, Calif.) got Maine going when he intercepted a pass and went coast-to-coast for a layup and the foul. The Minutemen would take an 11-5 lead with five minutes left, but a Troy Barnies (Auburn, Maine) put-back would make it 12-7 with 11:56 left in the first half. The teams exchanged baskets, and a nifty Malachi Peay (Brooklyn, N.Y.) steal and fastbreak layup got the Black Bears within 20-14 with eight minutes to play in the first stanza. Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) hit a jumper and an Andrew Rogers steal and layup got Maine within 20-18 with seven minutes to play. The Black Bears continued to battle, which included a nice Fraser dunk on a Minuteman defender. A Barnies follow made it 30-29 UMass with just under four minutes to play. Two Peay free throws with two minutes left gave Maine a one-point edge. The teams exchanged baskets but would go into halftime tied at 32. Fraser led Maine with nine points in the first half while McLemore added six points and three rebounds. The Minutemen opened up a 36-33 lead, but Mike Allison (Lynden, Ontario) had a nice follow above the rim to make it a one-point game five minutes into the second stanza. Maine got within 38-37 on a nice Peay pass to McNally for an easy layup. UMass got a bucket, but Terrance Mitchell (Milton, Fla.) swished a three to tie the game at 40 with 11:20 left. Mitchell would drain another three to put Maine up 45-42 with 10 minutes to play. The Black Bears took a 50-44 lead on a Peay free throw with 8:42 left, and a McNally follow put Maine up 52-44. Maine got a stop, and McLemore made a three from the corner to put the Black Bears up 11 with six minutes to play. The teams exchanged three pointers, and Maine held a 60-47 lead with 4:07 left. UMass made a pair of free throws, but Barnies answered with a layup. The Black Bears got a stop, and would make free throws the rest of the way to seal the win. Allison finished with seven points, six rebounds and three blocks while McLemore added 12 and Mitchell 10.

Douglas Leichner

Associate Head Coach

Douglas Leichner returns for his ninth season and fifth as associate head coach. Leichner has been a successful head coach for nine seasons with a proven track record at six different levels of basketball, while guiding five programs from hardship to prosperity. The associate head coach has garnered “Coach of the Year” accolades on ten occasions and has won six championships. In his last two seasons as head coach, Leichner has led two different teams to an overall record of 39-2-1 (.928 winning percentage) pushing his overall record of 153-84-1 (.645 winning percentage).

Leichner made an immediate impact as he led Great Britain to an unprecedented championship appearance and an unprecedented promotion to U20 Division A European Championships. The team was 16-1 under his tenure including an undefeated preparation phase (9-0). Great Britain went undefeated in pool play including a victory over the eventual champion, Poland. Leichner designed an exciting up-tempo style of play that paid immediate dividends as his squad led the tournament in several categories, most notably in the scoring department, averaging 83 points per contest.

N i n t h S eas o n C SC U ‘ 9 2

In the 2012-2013 season, Leichner completed his fourth season as Associate Head Basketball Coach for the University of Maine Black Bears. He has made an impact as the defensive architect behind Maine’s success. Under Leichner’s direction, the Black Bears have become perennially ranked in many defensive categories and known for their aggressive and innovative defensive schemes. The Black Bears led the America East in blocks (4.0 per game) for the second time in three seasons. In addition, the 2009-10 Black Bears team had the second most regular season wins in program history (19), as well as the fourth-most overall wins in the program’s history. The Black Bears also ranked among the nation’s leaders in field goal percentage defense (19th), scoring defense (39th) and fewest personal fouls per game (16th). Leichner has produced four America East All-Defensive Team selections in his past six seasons at Maine. A tireless recruiter, Leichner successfully signed Alasdair Fraser (Scotland) and Noam Laish (Israel) the 32nd ranked and 47th ranked prospects in Europe respectively. He also recruited Till Gloger the MVP of the German U19 League as well as Justin Edwards the #8 ranked player in Canada. Justin Edwards was an impact player as he earned America East All-Rookie Team. In 2012-2013, Justin Edwards led the America East in scoring (16.7ppg) and steals (1.9spg) en route to being named All-America East Second Team. Known for post player development, the 2012-13 season was no different as Mike Allison and Alasdair Fraser joined former NBA player Jeff Cross as the only players in program history to notch 500 rebounds and 100 blocks in a career. Alasdair Fraser was named to All-America East Second Team and Mike Allison was named to America East All-Defensive Team. Under Leichner’s direction, five players have garnered All Conference honors, including Troy Barnies who was a first team selection in 2010-11. Leichner’s extensive duties with the Black Bears include recruitment coordinator, game scheduling, scouting of opponents, equipment ordering and purchasing, fundraising activities, practice organization, on-floor coaching as well as academic monitoring, advising and mentoring. The 2008-09 season proved to be an unprecedented campaign as head coach of the professional club, UCC Demons in Cork, Ireland. The Demons finished 22-1-1 and captured the elusive “Treble” for the first time in Irish basketball history. They were the SuperLeague Southern Conference Champions, the 2009 Irish National Cup Champions as well as the SuperLeague Champions. As a result of his team’s success, Leichner was named “SuperLeague Coach of the Year 2008-09”, “Eurobasket.com Ireland Coach of the Year 2008-09” and “Streetball Ireland Coach of the Year 2008-09”. He was also responsible for development of the club’s feeder programs and overseeing all the coaches within the club. Leichner also organized clinics, marketed the organization, and was director of the Demons basketball camps. Leichner came to the UCC Demons after spending four seasons as an assistant at the University of Maine. He was the lead international recruiter and assisted in developing many of the Black Bears offensive and defensive schemes. Leichner came to Maine after spending seven seasons as a high school head coach in Florida. He had stops at Osceola High School in Kissimmee, Merritt Island High School and Episcopal H.S. in Jacksonville. In 1992, Leichner began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Naugatuck Valley Community Technical College in Waterbury, Conn. Maine Men’s Basketball ∞ 2013-14 Media Guide

Dean Smith, a three-time GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American, received the NCAA Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship in 1990 for his academic and athletic achievements while a UMaine basketball player. The Walter Byers Scholarship Program was established in 1988 as a means of recognizing the contributions of the NCAA executive emeritus through encouraging excellence in academic performance by student-athletes. Under this program one male and one female athlete are annually awarded a postgraduate scholarship in recognition of his or her outstanding academic achievement and potential for success in postgraduate study. An individual named a Byers scholar will have combined the best elements of mind and body to achieve national distinction, and promises to be a future leader in his of her field of service. Smith combined the top grade-point average among senior electrical engineering majors with the North Atlantic Conference scoring title as captain of the 1989–90 Black Bears.
