UST Thesis Project
The central seaport of Bohol
The Philippines
is an archipelagic nation made up of over 7,000 islands separated by large bodies of water making sea travel and its corresponding infastructure essential to the country.
Bohol island is considered to be a vital link and jump off point between the two majors regions of the country, Visayas and Mindanao. It is also seen as a popular tourist destination being home to many natural and historical attractions. Because of its location, the construction and improvement of seaports on the island has been a crucial concern to ease travel between islands in order to attract tourists, foreign and local alike.
Depth Map
The Central Port of Bohol
is located in the capital city of the island and is considered a major port of entry to the region serving about 5,000 passengers and cargo ships daily.
Site Development
Site Reaction to Environment Natural depth requires the extension of land outwards to allow all kinds of ships to access the port.

Form, Structure, Facade
Workshop Structure The structure of this workshop was unique in the way that it required three main tasks to be achieved each day on three different sites. On the final day, we were free to choose any of the projects from the previous tasks and develop it to produce its form, structure, and facade.
TASK ONE Form Here we were asked to create a form and show how this was affected by its context.
TASK TWO
We were tasked to move to t of a colleague, adjust accor struc
O Structure
the next site, choose a form ordingly, and think about its cture.
TASK THREE Facade Here we were tasked to move to the third site, choose a structural project of a colleague, and create a facade.
3 - 6 floors
10 - 12 flrs
TASK FOUR The Cord
La guindalera is at the perimeter of central Madrid in the newer part of the city where you will find various high-rise buildings. Because of its location, the form was developed in a way to connect these two worlds. Starting at a 10 floor structure towrards the north moving to 6 floors towards the south. Because of its snake like form acting like a wall, it was imperative to create moments of release through the form which creates windows to both sides of the city. This also gives users double height semi-public spaces.
Form
Curved Plan This snake like plan allowed for pockets of public to semi-public spaces and creates a connection from the north pand south part of the site.
Push and Pull To determine the right building height to achieve the perfect density and relate to its surrondings.
Push and Pull Because it is surronded by buildings of different heights, the form reacts to this to be able to connect these two scenarios acting like a cord or link between two worlds.
Smooth and Release To develop the form further, the roof line was created in a continuous way and the introduction of openings along the building to break the monotony and allow some relief to the building.
Structure Cores Placing the cores at the critical moments or the bends to allow for a more standard usable plan in the length of the buildings where the program or used spaces will be.
Grid Having a column spacing of 7m to allow for a variety of uses whether it is housing or commecial space with a cantilever of 1.5m where loggias or a gallery may fit.
Horizontal Circulation The grid and lengthy shape of the building calls for a gallery access and depending on the side, this gallery can be switched on either side which the core may access.

Facade
Extended Angled Facade This design was used to act as a layer of protection from the sound pollution from the neighboring highway and from direct impact between apartments caused by the form of the building.
Materiality Neighboring buildings range from modern high-rise structures to typical brick Madrid buildings. This inspired the materiality, making use of a concrete panel that is able to match the texture and color of bricks.
Ground Floor The facade breaks at the ground floor to create a more open and inviting feeling to support public spaces. Creating a frame around the entry points creates for a more private transition into the building and also differentiates addresses.
Relief Creating double spaced openings to provide some relief along the long snaking form.

Threshold
Site Paseo de la Dirección Area of Development
The project located in the district of Tetuán along El Paseo de la Dirección has changed quite a bit from 1929. The urban plan proposed a grand avenue in the semi-rural neighborhood of many substandard settlements. The workshop focuses on finding new housing solutions that help the densification of the city while considering social and cultural drivers. Each team was given a different site which called for different approaches. Today more than ever a house is as much a place for working, co-working, making, meeting and sharing as a place for dwelling. The goal of the project was to strive for the development of new collective housing formats that foster a new urban culture while supporting the current context.

Building Footprint Creating a closed courtyard block where the plot dictates the footprint of the building with a central courtyard for levels of public to semi-public spaces
Break Points To break the monotony of a continous closed block, relief points were necessary along the buildings length. Here we incorporated an existing path and continued it through the site
Push and Pull Determine the right building height that reacts to the future developments and its surronding context
Push and Pull The project aims to act like a threshold connecting and reacting to both circumstance of new high-rise developments to the west and existing low to mid rise settlements on the east
Formal - Informal Because of the formal and continous exterior facade, the aim of the interior facade was to give more variation and create a more playful feeling in the courtyard space.

MCH 2021 Specialty
Urban Design and Landscape
This specialty calls us to think of new solutions to redensify and revitalize parts of the city of Madrid that have been neglected. Through this project, we found a location to the southwest of Madrid where development has stalled due to 2 major highways that divides the neighborhood and forms a barrier between the central city. Despite this barrier, the site is located in a strategic location between different greenbelts which we wanted to take advantage of.

Density Strategies
Scales of Densities and Mixed use Blocks To create various scales of density and promote a social mix through different block types that serve commercial, residential, and community purposes. It was also important for us to create a transition of scales from the city to the outskirts where density is focused to the north east.
