Performance and arts projects develop creativity skills and confidence
Over the year our Junior Glee club and both Junior and Senior dance groups have become local successes, building in confidence and showing fantastic progression. They have performed at the One Oldham Business Awards, Mahdlo Stars Awards, a Saddleworth Rotary Casino event and the Spindles Fashion Show.
To encourage even more members to try dance, STRIDE, a dance production aimed at engaging boys in dance, and The British Streetdance Championships visited Mahdlo to run some group work sessions – this created a huge buzz in the centre!
We’ve always known we had some hugely talented musicians and vocalists amongst our members, and they were able to showcase their talent to event more people through working with a professional producer to write, record and master tracks for the Mahdlo Rocks CD.
Our arts and craft offer continued to be structured around topics of the month and societal issues, including creating Halloween decorations and a graffiti project on influential artists for Black History Month.
Over the festive period, 25 young people put on a Winter Fashion Show in Spindles, doing a fantastic job of representing Mahdlo and showcasing
clothes from high street retailers including Next, BHS and Claire’s Accessories. Our big Christmas production Peter Pan the Panto was a huge success, and was written, designed and produced by our Juniors. Everything from the script to the set and costumes were created by our very talented and creative 8 – 12 year olds and they were delighted with the finished show!
BEFORE COMING TO MAHDLO I NEVER USED TO GO OUT AND WOULD SIT IN MY BEDROOM AND NEVERSOCIALISEDWITHOTHERPEOPLE.MAHDLO HAS MADE ME MORE CONFIDENT TO GO OUT AND SOCIALISEMOREWITHOTHERS.INOWHAVELOADS OF NEW MATES. MAHDLO IS FUN, I LIKE SINGING AND DOING ARTS AND CRAFTS. THE STAFF ARE REALLY NICE TO ME AND THEY ALWAYS CHEER ME UP WHEN I’M UPSET. THEY TALK TO ME AND IT FEELS LIKE I CAN TELL THEM ANYTHING BECAUSE THEY LISTEN TO ME.
