A warm welcome to the
Highcliffe Food and Arts Festival After two years of cancellations we are delighted to be back with the much loved Highcliffe Food and Arts Festival. The past two years have been difficult for our volunteer committee as so much organisation had gone into the 2020 festival and we had to cancel twice. However, we are back with a wonderful array of food, drink and craft stalls and a huge amount of free entertainment for the whole family. We are enormously grateful to have the Highcliffe Residents Association as our headline sponsors and would also like to thank the Highcliffe Parish Council, BCP and the many business sponsors and supporters, without whom we couldn’t run the festival. A map in the centre of this programme gives a detailed description of where you can find everything including a note of our two festival offices and information points. We are looking forward to welcoming the renowned chefs Jean-Christophe Novelli and Lesley Waters to our ‘Marquee on the Green’ and they will be joined by the leading chefs from our local restaurants and hotels. There will be two entertainment stages at both ends of the village offering a wide range of talent to suit all ages and tastes. Literally everything from the Swing Unlimited Community Band to music from the Fifinellas, Highcliffe School, the Charity Players plus much more. The novelty ‘Chefs on Stilts’ will also be back providing lots of photo opportunities and Funky Fitness will keep you entertained and offer the opportunity to join in. Children can enjoy pottery and art classes, Mr Rocket Man, Little Gizmos, Grow your Own, make chocolate lollipops in our Kids Kitchen and take part in a special treasure hunt on the Green.
The Festival provides some wonderful shopping opportunities ranging from over eighty artisan food and drink stalls, mainly situated in the High Street, to over sixty specially curated craft stalls all of which will be on the Green. This year we are committed to becoming an environmentally friendly and sustainable event. By working with suppliers, traders and local businesses, we aim to reduce, reuse and recycle. There is a strong emphasis on reducing single-use plastic and there are many ways in which we can all work together to make this possible. We have encouraged food and drink vendors to use compostable and/or recycled boxes, plates and cutlery for this year’s event and, to encourage recycling, we have employed the services of a local waste removal business Junk-O-Saurus. In addition to the waste bins we have used in the past, you will see reclaimed woodbins clearly marked for recycled material. A ‘Junk-O-Saurus’ will be roaming the festival areas, using a family friendly and fun approach, talking about waste management and recycling. There will be regular updates on our website, Facebook and Instagram pages so please check those for any changes we may have to make. Lesley Waters JeanChristophe Novelli Jean-Christophe began his career at the tender age of 14 as a baker in his home town of Arras, France. At 19, he became Private Head Chef to Elie de Rothschild in Paris. He moved to the UK in 1983 and worked in well-known places including Chewton Glen. He later became Head Chef at Gordleton Mill where he won his first Michelin star, and Head Chef at the Four Seasons Hotel where he won another Michelin star. He went on to open renowned restaurants in London, Cape Town, Normandy and Belfast. In 2005, Jean-Christophe and wife Michelle opened The Novelli Cookery School in Hertfordshire, which attracts food lovers from across the globe. He’s a regular on TV, most recently as a fugitive on Celebrity Hunted which raised huge amounts for Stand Up to Cancer. 6
A former chef and cookery demonstrator, Lesley’s lively personality makes her a very popular television cook. She was a regular part of the team of Ready Steady Cook (BBC2) and This Morning (ITV). A recognisable household name Lesley now runs her immensely popular cookery school Shaftesbury in north Dorset and is also a guest lecturer at White Pepper Cookery School at Bere Farm. She has a regular column in Dorset Magazine and often acts as a recognisable spokesman for several large food brands. She studied French cuisine for three years at Ealing College, which included time as a chef at the Waldorf Hotel. In 1978 Lesley joined Prue Leith’s Restaurant and was quickly promoted to position as senior chef. She then worked as a freelance corporate chef and caterer for government officials before joining Leith’s school of food and wine as an instructor, rising to head teacher. She often represented British food at international cookery displays, taking as her theme ‘good food for health’s sake’. She has written 20 cookery books and supported Christchurch Food Festival with its work as patron in schools since its inception in the year 2000.
