DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / WELCOME

A warm welcome to the March edition of Dorset Business Focus and I hope this finds you well. It’s been a busy few months as we finally get back to full speed with plans for the year ahead. I was personally pleased to see the end of Plan B and whilst it’s clear that Covid still surrounds us, we have to get back to some kind of normality and push on with life. Our recent events show us that many people share this perspective and we need to learn to live with Covid. Our cover story this month features the new OnBuy offices in Bournemouth. I’d like to congratulate Cas and his team on the incredible growth of OnBuy over the last couple of years, a hugely ambitious business that is disrupting the established online retail marketplace. This techbased business continues to show exponential growth and the move to these new larger HQ in central Bournemouth clearly put OnBuy on the map as a leading business in the South and we are proud to work closely with Cas and the team. We recently launched the Dorset Apprenticeship Awards, in partnership with the Dorset and Somerset Training Provider Network and sponsored by Superior Seals. The awards seek to celebrate the hugely

important contribution that apprentices make to businesses and organisations in Dorset as well as highlight the way this great programme positively influences people’s lives. The awards are free to enter and open to all apprentices and employers in Dorset and the closing date is 20th March. We’ll celebrate with our finalists as a VIP awards event at Superior Seals on 18th May to be attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset. You can see more information on the Dorset Chamber website and I’d like to say a particular thank you to our sponsors Superior Seals for their great support. March will also see us publish our plans for the next financial year in our 2022-2023 Manifesto. You’ll see a major focus on ESG and health and wellbeing over the next year with an exciting programme of events and workshops. Our events are filling up quickly so don’t delay in booking your place. Finally we are improving the way we communicate the benefits of Dorset Chamber membership. You’ll see a new and comprehensive overview of the great benefits

that are available through membership on our website along with a new section on how to actually access these benefits. Membership offers a huge range of opportunities and benefits and if you’d like to find out more, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Enjoy this month’s magazine! Paving their way to huge things Ian Girling, Chief Executive at Dorset Chamber talks to Cas Paton, CEO & Founder of Onbuy.com about the future So much has happened over the last couple of years, where is OnBuy now? We’ve seen incredible change over the last couple of years. Our team has grown rapidly from just 14 in 2016 to northwards of 120 today. In November, OnBuy hit its landmark 5th Birthday, winning numerous industry awards, including the Deloitte Tech Fast 50, being recognised as the fastest growing tech business in the South West. We have recently moved into our new Bournemouth city centre offices, OnBuy House, which provides a hub for OnBuy’s growing team. Occupying 4 stories of office space and ample

break out areas, along with a spacious roof terrace with stunning sea views. The team can now come together to collaborate and lay down the foundations for what comes next for OnBuy. What do you see on both the opportunities ahead and challenges for the next couple of years? Over the last couple of years, the rules of retail have been completely rewritten. More customers have adopted eCommerce as a part of their regular shopping routine and expectation is rising when it comes to retail journeys.

The Southwest is where OnBuy was born, and I truly believe there is a world of talent beyond the M25 to be tapped into 4

This is a great opportunity for us, and we are investing heavily in product enhancement, customer service and account management, to ensure that we can provide the best possible experience for both our customers and retailers. The huge increase of online shopping brings its challenges. There is more and more media attention on the eCommerce space with news highlighting that some retail giants are taking advantage of their partners and employees. At OnBuy we want to show that it doesn’t have to be this way. Our focus is to continue promoting marketplace trust, transparency, and fairness, and supporting our retailers and staff, which is something that has always been at the heart of our business. Why did you decide to open your HQ in Bournemouth and what does this mean for OnBuy? The Southwest is where OnBuy was born, and I truly believe there is a world of talent beyond the

@DorsetChamber

M25 to be tapped into. We’re one of the fastest-growing tech companies in the UK and just one of the lucrative businesses leading the Silicon Beach movement. The way I see it, if you’re going to work anywhere, why not work by one of the most beautiful coasts in Europe? While plenty of companies are downsizing or selling their offices in favour of working from home, I’ve always believed in creating a hub where our team can think, collaborate and thrive. Our new offices - OnBuy House - provide staff with ample breakout areas and stunning panoramic sea views from Bournemouth all the way to Old Harry’s Rocks. Creating an attractive office space that staff want to come back to was one of the biggest driving factors behind our decision to bring OnBuy HQ to Bournemouth.

I started OnBuy with a vision, driven to make a change and don’t get me wrong, we had obviously planned to develop quickly, but no one expected the exponential growth we’ve experienced over the last few years. It’s been hard work, exciting and a little bit crazy; this kind of growth brings challenges that you can only plan for in hindsight. www.onbuy.com

We know recruitment problems are a major issue for many businesses, is this having an impact on OnBuy? The recruitment market at the moment is highly competitive and we want to hire the best, so it was important that we didn’t limit ourselves. We recruit from anywhere in the UK offering remote roles to give access to talent from all over the country. We hire employees based on their skills and encourage all staff to ‘own the way they work’ through flexible working and hybrid policies. In doing so, we have managed to build an incredible OnBuy team. What’s next for OnBuy? There is so much happening at OnBuy and absolutely loads of exciting things on our roadmap, but I don’t want to give too much away at this stage. Let’s just say, we are paving our way to huge things, including international expansion. Watch this space! What advice would you give the younger Cas, say 4 years ago, now? Looking back, I would give myself a head’s up about the speed of growth to come! more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Julia’s House kick-starts new careers thanks to government scheme The careers of nineteen young people across Dorset and Wiltshire have been given a boost by children’s hospice charity Julia’s House, thanks to the Government’s Kickstart employment scheme. Kickstart was open to people aged 16-24 and claiming Universal Credit and was designed to help those who are at risk of long-term unemployment. Julia’s House took on the nineteen government-funded trainees for a period of six months across its chain of high street shops, providing them with on-the-job training, practical experience and confidence within the retail sector. Since the end of the scheme in October 2021, three of the charity’s Kickstarters now have university placements and eight have been able to secure further employment with the likes of Boots, British Heart Foundation, EE and Currys. Julia’s House has also been able to offer two participants permanent roles in its own retail team. Jodie Symes, 24, from Hamworthy, is now employed as a Junior Retail Assistant, supporting the whole of the charity’s retail operation across the two counties. Jodie was a new mum who had struggled to find flexible work when she joined the Kickstart scheme. She has been in her new role with the charity for almost four months now. “I absolutely love being a permanent member of the Julia’s House team – I look forward to coming to work every day!” Jodie says. “It’s given me my independence back and I’m learning so much about the charity and its work. It’s a really varied role, I get to work with some lovely people and am gaining experience in providing admin support to the retail team as well as serving customers in the shop.” Since finishing her placement, twentyyear-old Jade Sanger from Salisbury has been employed as a Customer Assistant at the Julia’s House shop in her hometown. Like Jodie, Jade had found it difficult to find suitable employment, but applied to the Kickstart scheme on the suggestion of her work coach. Jade says: “I began working at Julia’s House as a Kickstarter in May 2021. During my sixmonth programme I gained many more skills. I can work well in a team; my communication skills have improved when talking to customers and co-workers and I have more experience within retail. Once my six months was up, I began looking at other retail jobs to apply for with the valuable experience I had gained. And then a job then became available at Julia’s House. I applied and thankfully they offered me the position! The Kickstart programme was a great experience and I would recommend it 8

to anybody who needs support to find a job.” Erin Hobbs, Assistant Area Retail Manager for Julia’s House says: “We’re so proud of everything our wonderful Kickstarters have achieved during their time with us, and are delighted that so many have been able to use their new-found experience and skills to follow their dreams.“ Erin continues: “The retail team at Julia’s House has done a fantastic job in providing such excellent-on-the job development

and training to give these young people genuine hope and opportunity.” Julia’s House provides a lifeline of care to the families of seriously ill children across Dorset and Wiltshire. It relies on public fundraising, retail sales, donations and gifts in Wills for the majority of the money needed to fund its vital service. www.juliashouse.org

Inspire celebrates outstanding customer satisfaction score South coast business and tax advisors, Inspire, celebrated having achieved an outstanding score on its latest customer satisfaction survey. Using the globally recognised Net Promoter Score (NPS) approach to measure customer satisfaction and loyalty, clients were asked how likely they are to recommend Poole-based Inspire on a scale of 0-10 (zero being least likely and 10 being most likely). A staggering 93% of clients gave Inspire a score of 7 or above, highlighting the firm’s successful focus on delivering ‘Client Delight’. The overall NPS is calculated by subtracting the percentage of ‘detractors’ (those giving a score of 0-6) from the percentage of ‘promoters’ (clients scoring a 9 or 10), these total scores can range from -100 to +100. Inspire’s score came in at a very impressive +57, 14 points higher than the average score for professional services firms and ahead of some of the world’s leading brands, including Amazon +53, Netflix +55 and Apple +56. Warren Munson, Inspire Founder, commented: “As a firm focused on delivering Client Delight, it’s really important for us to make sure we measure how happy our clients are in their experience of working with us. “We’re delighted to have achieved such an outstanding score on our recent survey. I am very proud that we have a team passionate about delivering first-class service and advice for clients, the score of +57 is testament to the team’s hard work and dedication. “We also have amazing clients who I’d like to thank for taking part in the survey. Many of our clients have been with us since the early days of the firm – and we know that our client service and trusted relationships are the reasons that they stay with us.” As part of the survey – which was conducted independently by Zest Consultancy – clients were also asked ‘What does Inspire do well?’, many clients agreed that Inspire’s key attributes were ‘delivering professional, expert advice’, ‘highly responsive and efficient’ and ‘great communication’.

WHY should business invest funds in arts and culture? Undoubtedly because they are part of our national conversation and enhance our quality of life. Wherever you look, publicly funded arts are making an important contribution to society. But less acknowledged is the symbiotic relationship between arts and business. We need business to support our national arts and culture for three compelling reasons. One - Our creative industries produce and export games, music, film, architecture, and design, as well as brilliant tv shows and broadcasting. Second - Any employer has a vested interest in their locality being a rewarding place to live. That is how you attract and retain a talented workforce. The third reason for businesses to back arts and culture is that it supports Brand Britain. We are recognised globally as being good at “the creative stuff” and we know, from British Council research, that countries and industries exposed to our culture are more likely to trade with us. Many major companies, such as BP and Bloomberg, are long-term donors to the arts because they understand their value, they derive a definable return from sponsorship deals, or because they wish to support educational and socially beneficial schemes. Our reputation in the world is largely defined by our culture; it can make a significant difference to economic growth. It’s a national asset, and a national opportunity. Let’s invest in it!

b4b marketing kickstarts a busy year by growing their team Web, software, and marketing agency, b4b, has started the year by recruiting two new starters. This comes after a successful 2021, which saw them welcome a new Marketing Assistant, Shannon Whyte, in November. Leo Tuttle and Summer Bramall started on the same day in the first week of January, as a Software Project Assistant and Social Media Executive respectively. Leo is providing support to our busy software team, as they build custom e-commerce platforms, mobile apps, and specialist business systems. Summer joins our growing social media department, which manages the social media marketing for a number of the area’s leading businesses. Their varied roster of clients features well-known names including Cobra RIBs, W&S Recycling, and Forum Jewellers. Each of our new starters has settled in brilliantly, quickly becoming a valuable part of the team. Leo and Shannon both came to us via the government’s Kickstart Scheme, which helps under-25s gain a six-month contract with a local employer. Shannon is a recent English Literature graduate who has worked in marketing previously. She says she enjoys how varied agency life is, and that she loves

getting to learn about the many areas of marketing and client relations. “I have been able to absorb information from beyond my field, gaining an insight into other areas, such as web development and media production, all of which have helped to support and enhance my marketing expertise. YMCA Bournemouth Sleep Easy – Could you sleep rough so others don’t have to? YMCA Bournemouth (YMCAB) have launched another year of its popular Sleep Easy fundraising events, supported by businesses, schools and groups who will “sleep rough for one night, so others don’t have to”. The YMCAB Sleep Easy raises thousands of pounds annually, offering hope to local people who are affected by homelessness, as well as creating an understanding of what it is really like to sleep rough for those taking part. The concept has proven very popular in local schools and businesses; over 15 local schools have signed up to hold their own School Sleep Easy events in their grounds, whilst the annual Big Sleep Easy event will take place on 15th October at Talbot Heath School. YMCAB are inviting businesses, groups, and individuals to join them as they once again bed down under the stars for the night. Sheena Dayman, Events Manager, YMCAB explains: “One night can make a lifetime of difference. James Pike, SUEZ Regional Director commented: “At SUEZ, valuing the people and communities we serve is at the core of what we do, which is why we are proud to support this year’s Big Sleep Easy event. Everyone deserves a safe place to call home, and we hope by partnering with YMCAB we can combine forces to tackle homelessness.” The YMCA helped 174 local people to rebuild /company/dorset-chamber/

Breaking the habit:

Top 10 bad cybersecurity habits to shed in 2022 The new year is a new opportunity to rewire your digital life. An increasingly important part of this is cybersecurity. In fact, 2021 is already shaping up to have been one of the most prolific years yet for cybercriminals. Almost 19 billion records were exposed in the first half of the year alone. Better security should mean you’re more insulated from the risk of identity theft and financial loss. Although the businesses you interact with have a duty, and often a legal responsibility, to keep your data protected, it’s important to do your bit. Be alert, be proactive and break these 10 bad habits to improve your cyber-hygiene in 2022:

Using outdated software Vulnerabilities in operating systems, browsers and other software on your PCs and devices are one of the top ways cybercriminals can attack. By switching on automatic update functionality and clicking through to update when prompted, this task needn’t intrude too much on day-to-day life. Poor password hygiene Passwords represent the keys to our digital front door. Unfortunately, as we have so many to remember these days – around 100 on average – we tend to use them insecurely. Using the same password for multiple accounts and easy-to-guess credentials gives hackers a massive advantage. They have software to crack weak encryption, try commonly used variants and attempt to use breached passwords across other accounts (known as credential stuffing). Instead, use a password manager to remember and recall strong, unique passwords or passphrases. And switch on two-factor authentication (2FA) on any account that offers it.

protection from a reputable provider on all your PCs and laptops. But how many of us extend the same security to our mobile and tablet devices? Research suggests we spend nearly 5,000 hours each year using these gadgets. And there’s plenty of opportunity to come across malicious apps and websites in that time. Protect your device today.

is an increasingly popular way to elicit personal and financial info from victims. The scammers often disguise their real number to add legitimacy to the attack. The best rule of thumb is not to hand out any sensitive info over the phone. Ask who they are and where they’re calling from and then ring the company direct to check – not using any phone numbers provided by the caller.

Using non-secure websites HTTPS sites use encryption to protect the traffic going from your web browser to the site in question. It has two purposes: to authenticate that website as genuine and not a phishing or fraudulent web property; and to ensure cybercriminals can’t eavesdrop on your communications to steal passwords and financial information. It’s not a 100% guarantee nothing bad will happen as even many phishing sites use HTTPS these days. But it’s a good start. Always look for the padlock symbol.

Not backing up Ransomware is costing businesses hundreds of millions annually. So, it’s sometimes easy to forget that there are still variants lying in wait for consumers. Imagine if you were suddenly locked out of your home PC. All the data on it, and potentially cloud storage, could be lost forever – including family photos and important work documents. Regular backups, according to the 3-2-1 best practice rule, provide peace-of-mind in case the worst happens.

Sharing work and personal lives Many of us have spent a large part of the past two years merging a once clearly defined line between our work and our personal lives. As the line has become more blurred, cyber-risk has crept in. Consider the use of work emails and passwords to register on consumer shopping and other sites. What if those sites are breached? Now hackers may be able to hijack your corporate account. Using unprotected personal devices for work also adds extra risk. Keeping business and pleasure discrete is worth the extra effort. Giving out details over the phone Just as email and SMS-based phishing uses social engineering techniques to trick users into clicking, so voice phishing, also called vishing,

Not protecting the smart home Nearly a third of European houses are fitted out with smart gadgets like voice assistants, smart TVs, and security cameras. But by fitting them with connectivity and intelligence, these devices also become a more attractive target for criminals. They can be hijacked and turned into botnets to launch attacks on others or used as a gateway to the rest of your devices and data. To keep them secure, change default passwords on start-up. Also, be sure to choose a vendor who has a track record of fixing known vulnerabilities in their products and research potential security flaws before purchasing a gadget.

Using public Wi-Fi We’re all getting out-and-about more these days. And that brings with it a temptation to use public Wi-Fi. But there are risks. Hackers can use the same networks to eavesdrop on your internet usage, access your accounts and steal your identity. To stay safe, try to avoid these public hotspots altogether. If you must use them, don’t log in to any important accounts while connected. Not thinking before clicking Phishing is one of the most prolific cyberthreats out there. It uses a technique known as social engineering, where attackers try to trick their victims into clicking on a malicious link or opening a malware-laden attachment. They take advantage of our hard-wired credulity, and often try to force rapid decision-making by lending the message a sense of urgency. The number one rule to thwart these attacks is to think before you click. Double check with the person or company (apparently) sending the email to make sure it is legitimate. Not using security on all devices It goes without saying that in an era of prolific cyber-threats, you should have anti-malware 22

Employers’ PPE responsibilities extended From April 6th employers’ and employees’ duties under the PPE at Work Regulations (PPER 2022), regarding Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be extended to include limb (b) workers. Today’s rules (PPER 1992 scope) place a duty on every employer to ensure that suitable PPE is provided to ‘employees’ who may be exposed to a risk to their health or safety while at work. The new rules (PPER 2022) extend this duty to limb (b) workers. As a result, employers need to carefully consider whether the change to law applies to them and their workforce and make the necessary preparations to comply.

So, firstly, what’s a Limb (b) Worker? The HSE define them as those who can be understood as a ‘dependent contractor’. A ‘worker’ is registered as self-employed but provides a service as part of someone else’s business. They generally must carry out the work personally, rather than being able to send someone in their place.

What does this change mean for them? If a risk assessment indicates that a limb (b) worker requires PPE to carry out their work activities, the employer must carry out a PPE suitability assessment and provide the PPE free of charge as they do for employees. The employer will be responsible for the maintenance, storage, and replacement of any PPE they provide. The limb (b) worker will be required to use the PPE properly following training and instruction from the employer. Don’t let a lack of PPE for limb (b) workers add to the, already high, number of workers who suffer from a work-related illness each year.

Hall & Woodhouse raises over £1million for charity in past decade Hall & Woodhouse team are proud to have helped raise a total of £126,389.56 through various charity partnerships over the course of the past charity year. The money raised has brought the company’s total fundraising figure over the past decade to a staggering £1,103,000. Lucinda Gray, Community Relationships Manager at Hall & Woodhouse, said: “We could not be prouder of the incredible efforts shown by our team and what they have collectively achieved over the past charity year. To be able to take the total money raised in the last decade to over £1million is an extraordinary milestone, and I thank all our team for their ambition and dedication to make this happen.” October 2020 saw Hall & Woodhouse launch its local pub charity partnerships, where each Managed House team and the team based at the brewery selected their own charity partner to support within their local community. Pubs across the south took part in a number of events and activities to raise money for their charity partners, such as a Guinness World Record-breaking pub quiz, and a challenging group paddleboarding excursion. £1,867 was raised for Dorset Mind by Hall & Woodhouse team member Jon Mead, by cycling to each of the company’s 50 pubs in Dorset. Jon cycled over 350km over the course of his challenge, which took over 19 hours to complete. The Crown Hotel in Blandford raised £1,300 for the Blandford Foodbank by hosting a night of

live music with Meatloaf tribute act, Meet Loaf, performing the band’s greatest hits. Additionally, almost £18,000 was collected through Hall & Woodhouse’s charity dish initiative, which can be found on the menu at all its Managed Houses. The Steak and Tanglefoot Ale Pie proved to be a popular dish with 25p from each pie bought going straight to the pub’s chosen charity partner. Lucinda Gray added: “Hall & Woodhouse is committed to enriching the communities within which we operate, and we are constantly looking for new ways to reach out to those who need our support. Our pub teams have faced many challenges over the last few years and yet they continued to prioritise charity fundraising activities because it is simply the right thing to do, and our guests have responded generously in support. “Our teams are excitedly making ambitious plans with their charity partners for the year ahead to ensure we raise even more money in 2022. Activities include the return of our own Dorset Beer Festival to be held at the brewery on Saturday 25th June with all profits from this event going to Dorset Mind.” www.hall-woodhouse.co.uk

Lewis-Manning Hospice Care celebrates 30th anniversary! Lewis-Manning started the year with a bang to kick-off a year of activities to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Lewis-Manning Hospice Care. The packed calendar of events started with a small celebratory tea party with staff, trustees and patients who have played a part in the charity’s success over the past three decades, hosted at the hospice on Longfleet Road in Poole. Clare Gallie, Chief Executive at LewisManning Hospice Care said, “Lewis-Manning Hospice Care has achieved so much in the past 30 years, helping over 8,000 patients, carers and loved ones to get the muchneeded hospice care they deserve. None of this would have been possible without the incredible help and support from staff, volunteers, trustees and our community who have made the hospice the extraordinary beacon that it is. We have lots going on this year to celebrate this fantastic achievement and hope you could join us and become part of Lewis-Manning Hospice Care too.” Jeremy Allin, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Lewis-Manning Hospice Care commented, “I am so proud to be part of LewisManning Hospice Care, especially during its 30th anniversary. I have been Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Lewis-Manning Hospice Care for a number of years, and I’ve seen the innovation, drive and enthusiasm to help even more people across East Dorset and Purbeck. The work Lewis-Manning does is so important, more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

particularly as there is increasing demand for hospice care. The future is looking bright for Lewis-Manning over the next 30 years because of all the work our local community does to support the charity now and in the future.” Tony Roberts, Life President of LewisManning Hospice Care, added, “It’s wonderful to be celebrating 30 years at Lewis-Manning Hospice Care. As one of the original people involved in setting up the charity, it is fantastic to see it grow and flourish from an idea our founder Marjorie Lewis-Manning had, to the incredible place it is today. I’m sure she would be so proud of the how many people the hospice has cared for and that her legacy is continuing all these years later. Here’s to the next 30 years…” Day Care Hospice patient Lou SmithWilliams said, “Lewis-Manning’s support and kindness, particularly during the last 18 months, has been a real lifeline for me. The hospice staff and fellow patients are an extension of my family and home. Coming here is like having a blanket wrapped around you. On our hospice days we don’t sit and talk about our illnesses, we talk about everyday life. There’s no doom and gloom, there’s always so much laughter, it’s a very happy place to be.” Day Care Hospice patient Rosa Adams added, “Lewis-Manning Hospice Care means everything to me. It’s the only

place where I feel safe to really let go of my feelings. Everyone understands, you don’t have to explain, they just get it.” Trustee Chris Palmer advised, “For many years I was aware of Lewis-Manning and always respected the work that they did in the broader community, so to be given the opportunity to support them as a trustee has been an extremely rewarding experience. I’m very proud to be a part of their community and helping to make a difference.” Day Hospice Clinical Team Manager Debbie Tallick-Wyatt commented, “The hospice has achieved so much so far in its 30-year history and we are looking forward to the future and achieving much more.” Finance Coordinator Flo Tyler said, “I’m very proud to work for such a wonderful service that has been around for 30 years. DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / BUSINESS PARTNER NEWS

Bournemouth Airport hosts Aviation Minister Aviation Minister Robert Courts visited Bournemouth Airport to see the vital role it has played in the battle against coronavirus and how it is bouncing back from the global pandemic. Since April 2020 the airport has played a critical role importing tens of millions of pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) and coronavirus testing kits from the Far East for the NHS. It has helped fill the gap left in international freight capacity caused by the sudden reduction in transatlantic airline travel. During his tour the Minister met business, finance and tourism students from Bournemouth and Poole College and some of the local people applying for vacancies at the airport, which recently launched its 2022/23 holiday schedule with 33 destinations on offer in 15 countries, including several new routes. Aviation Minister Robert Courts said: “Bournemouth Airport is a Great British success story. Not only has it played a vital role in the pandemic by getting PPE and test kits into the UK, rapidly establishing itself as an important cargo hub, but it’s now seeing the full resumption of passenger services. “We have supported the aviation sector throughout the pandemic with our recently extended Airport and Ground Operations Support Scheme and the online Aviation Skills Retention Platform, and today has been all about the future, involving local people and students keen to pursue a career in aviation.” Bournemouth Airport Managing Director Steve Gill said: “We were delighted to host more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

the Minister and show him how we have pivoted our operations during the pandemic to provide international cargo services, and expect to grow this side of our business. This has helped us protect jobs during the downturn in passenger travel. As we emerge from travel restrictions I’m pleased to say that the number of seats we have on sale today compares with pre-pandemic levels.” During his visit the Minister met with representatives from Bournemouth-based European Aviation which has been operating a fleet of converted Airbus A340 freight aircraft from the airport since April 2020, importing PPE supplies and test kits from the Far East up to seven times a week. And he met with DHL, who have been chartering regular flights from Bournemouth Airport to JFK Airport in New York since September 2020 to provide outbound and inbound freight services up to five times a week. The Minister heard how Bournemouth Airport has grown its freight operation from a standing start in 2020 to around 20,000 tonnes a year, with investment in staff and equipment to create a dedicated cargo team and customs clearance facilities, creating an alternative UK entry / access point to the major London airports. Having established itself as the UK’s newest cargo hub, and with continued international demand for e-commerce,

the airport is confident it has a sustainable freight business poised for further growth. Bournemouth Airport is a key employer in the region with currently around 230 directly employed personnel. The neighbouring Aviation Business Park is home to over 200 national and international businesses across multiple sectors, employing around 4,000 people. Outline plans to expand the park and create 2,600 jobs with a potential £100 million benefit to the local economy were approved by BCP Council last month. Bournemouth Airport is owned and operated by Regional & City Airports, which also owns and operates Exeter Airport and Norwich Airport. www.bournemouthairport.com

with Peter Harding

Why it’s time to review your cash savings and ISA’s Dorset Financial expert, Peter Harding explains why, particularly with inflation running high, it’s more important than ever to get the most out of your personal savings allowances by 5th April. We all need to know that we have cash to hand in case something unexpected happens. Many of us have a combination of cash savings and Cash ISAs. If you’ve had a Cash ISA for more than five years, the tax year deadline is the time to review how well your cash savings are performing.

Low saving rates

Everyone has an annual Personal Savings Allowance. Your Personal Savings Allowance means basic-rate taxpayers can earn £1,000 tax free interest on cash accounts per year. High-rate taxpayers can only earn £500. With interest rates at their current levels, a basic-rate taxpayer can hold around £150,000* in a non-ISA account before they have to pay any tax on their interest. (*Based on the current highest rate of interest for an easy access account is 0.67% – Moneyfacts, Nov 2021.)

Keeping up with Inflation

However, if the returns on your Cash ISA savings aren’t keeping up with inflation, then your spending power is reducing. With interest rates at record lows, cash ISAs may not make the returns that a Stocks and Shares ISA could in the longer-term. It’s another reason to consider whether a Cash ISA is the right place to save for longer term life goals. When looking at ways to make your savings and investments less taxing, it’s always useful to get some expert help and guidance. New pathology laboratory for Dorset moves a step closer Preparations for a new pathology laboratory at University Hospitals Dorset’s Royal Bournemouth Hospital site, including a histopathology diagnostic hub, have now been completed, bringing this cutting-edge facility a step closer to the people of Dorset. The innovative new facility will provide a wide range of pathology and research services as well as offices, staff facilities, new access road, car parking, cycle stores and landscaping. It will include a specialist diagnostic hub which will be used to study and diagnose diseases and illnesses using the latest in medical technology to analyse anything from a simple blood test to advanced genetic screening. Commenting on the commencement of works, Stephen Harding, head of service for One Dorset Pathology - a collaborative partnership between Dorset County Hospital and University Hospitals Dorset - said: “This is a very exciting and significant project for the patients of Dorset. “Pathology services are an essential part of the efficient and safe running of hospital and GP services, analysing the thousands of tests that are done for patients every day.

“The new facility will have the very latest in specialist technology and deliver better value, high quality diagnostic and care for patients across the region.” Development of this new £12.7m facility, located on the Wessex Fields site adjacent to the hospital, has been supported in part by a £2.7 million Local Growth Fund investment by Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) for the histopathology diagnostic hub as part of its initiatives to support Covid-19 recovery and accelerate healthcare resilience in the county. The diagnostic hub will be operational later this year with the build fully completed in the summer of 2023, with Hurn-based Amiri Construction appointed as build contractor following a competitive tendering process. They will be working to designs developed by UHD in partnership with the team of architects from Ansell & Bailey. Amiri Construction join a team that includes architect, Ansell & Bailey, AKS Ward, structural and civil engineers, services consultant, Richard Stephens Partnership, and McPhersons as cost consultants. www.amiriconstruction.co.uk

At ViewHR, we are receiving many calls from employers hoping to understand the current status of the Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) situation regarding the covid changes and where they stand in relation to the management of absence in a remote working model. There are tools and practices at an employers’ disposal to effectively manage sickness absence whether or not working remotely. The key is to do it the right way and to have good practices in place including a sickness absence policy, return to work meetings, monitoring as well as training managers to deal with sickness absence. Long-term absence is a delicate matter and requires consideration on a case-bycase basis. It is important that long-term absence is dealt with empathetically, professionally and considerations are given to the condition(s) causing the absence, any treatment undertaken, medical reports and appropriate levels of contact with the employee. As an employer, you need to be mindful of the possible risks of a disability and how this affects your duties to the employee. Unauthorised absence is a different matter, if necessary, this can be dealt with through your disciplinary procedure. However, we would always recommend clients investigate matters before rushing into disciplinary procedures. Tread carefully, just because the absence is unauthorised, doesn’t mean there wasn’t a genuine reason for their absence. It is important that a business manages sickness absence and creates a culture where genuine sickness absence is supported but unjustified ‘sickies’ are unacceptable. If you require external support with your sickness absence policy, your sickness absence levels or have concerns regarding an employee’s sickness absence, please get in touch. Future planning for BCP – a lot resting on housing figures After much delay, the Issues and Options Consultation document for the BCP Council Local Plan was finally published in January. This is the first formal consultation stage in the local plan process for the three towns and will eventually replace the current individual local plans for Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole, produced by the previous Councils. It is a pretty high-level consultation document – no detailed policies or site allocations here. The document either recommends the approach the local plan is likely to take to certain issues or provides some broad options of different policy approaches. Among the key objectives of the plan are: • regenerate our town centres and network of vibrant communities • provide a sufficient supply of new market and affordable homes to meet the different needs of our communities • support economic growth, the creation of jobs and the offer to visitors • adapt our high streets and shopping areas to cater for changing retail demands • provide a safe, sustainable and convenient transport network, with a step change in active travel behaviour, ensuring the necessary transport infrastructure is in place to make it easy for everyone to get around • conserve and enhance our protected habitats and biodiversity, and our network of green infrastructure and open spaces • work towards achieving carbon neutrality ahead of 2050 and inspire action to combat the climate and ecological

All good stuff, although, as so often with planning, the devil is likely to be in the detail which won’t emerge until the next consultation stage in late 2022. Perhaps the biggest issue the document seeks views on is the calculation of BCP’s housing requirement. Two different figures are quoted. The higher figure of 42,672 homes, reflects the Government’s recommended method of calculating housing need. Controversially however, BCP are also proposing a lower figure of 25,600 homes, based on their own local assessment of need, based upon much lower projections of international migration, especially students in Bournemouth. Whether this locally derived figure survives through the plan process has very significant implications for the planning strategy, especially the need for Green Belt release, higher density housing, and perhaps even request for Dorset Council to meet some of BCP’s housing need. At this very early stage, it is very much a case of “watch this space”, but undoubtedly this is a story that will run and run as the plan develops. If you have planning or development interests in the BCP area or would like to discuss how the new BCP Plan could affect your business, Intelligent Land’s experienced planning team will be happy to chat and give you advice. Dorset mental health charity launches monthly eating disorder drop-in service for students at Bournemouth University Local mental health charity Dorset Mind will be delivering a monthly drop-in service, situated in the Student Wellbeing Area at Talbot Campus. There, they will offer unbiased, non-judgmental support to students affected by eating disorders and other eating related issues. The charity will reinforce the message that recovery is possible from eating disorders – with early intervention and appropriate support. This service has been set up in response to an increasing recognition and overwhelming need to be provided – and will complement the range of well-being services already offered for BU students. Dorset Mind currently provides one-toone mentoring services and a recovery group for people who experience Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge-eating disorder and Other Specified Feeding or any disordered eating, under the name ‘Restored.’ Comprising professionals who have lived experience of eating disorders, this makes support both effective and relatable. Heading up the programme and hosting the drop-in service is Restored’s Senior Support Worker, Romy Simpkins. Maria East, Student Wellbeing Worker at Bournemouth University says, “Student Wellbeing are delighted to be working in partnership with Dorset Mind to provide the students at Bournemouth University the opportunity to access a regular Drop-in with a Restored Practitioner. We are very excited to start offering this to students and we are hopeful this will break down some barriers for students who wish to access Restored’s support by having this available on campus.” Dr Andrew Mayers, Patron at Dorset Mind and Principal Academic at Bournemouth

University adds, “I am so pleased to see this new eating disorder drop-in service at Bournemouth University. There is so much stigma towards disordered eating, which means that people are less likely to seek help for fear of judgement. There is also a great deal of misconception around what an eating disorder is. Young people are especially vulnerable to eating disorders. In this partnership between Bournemouth University and Dorset Mind, I truly hope that we can reduce distress and help give the students the support they need.” Linda O’Sullivan, CEO at Dorset Mind comments, “Early intervention is crucial to successful treatment of eating disorders; however, research findings suggest that many people wait to seek help. It is imperative therefore we can provide a safe place that’s already part of their community, where they can go to seek help as soon as they feel they need it. We’re therefore thrilled to be able to support local students at Bournemouth University in this way.” Restored is a service for people aged 16 upwards. It relies heavily on donations and external support from organisations and fundraisers. Help the charity fund this vital life-changing service by emailing them at: partnerships@dorsetmind.uk. If you think you might have an eating problem, the first step should be to speak to your doctor to identify or rule out any medical issues. with Frettens Solicitors

Enhanced, leading IT consultancy in the South, have been working with Mar-Key, the UK’s most prestigious temporary structure company and have helped them facilitate their financial growth from £6-12M. Ben Scroggie, CEO of Mar-Key Group, explains how the implementation of the new software by Enhanced of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, allowed the business to grow their emergency industrial arm, during the pandemic, as well as be systematically prepared for events to return to their pre-pandemic glory. Mar-Key Group needed a tech solution designed to support both of their revenue streams. Enhanced and their solutions consultants worked closely with Ben and his team to implement Business Central which means they are now able to streamline projects for both sides of the business, with access to live data, speedy reporting and the latest tech for resource planning. When asked about Enhanced this is what Ben had to say. What difference has working with Enhanced made to your company? I would say they have completely revolutionised our business. Pre Enhanced we had over 7 systems. All of these were paper focused and could not integrate with each other. This meant that we were unable to logistically manage projects from a costing and planning perspective. Mar-Key needed a way to streamline their operations to oversee each project status with the ability to record and monitor cost and time in one easy overview.

A quick look at due diligence when buying a business When looking to buy a business, you should undertake due diligence to examine all aspects of the company in question. This column will mainly focus on legal due diligence. Due diligence is important as it allows you (the buyer) to understand the business that you’re buying and determine whether there’s value for money. In addition, due diligence also allows you to discover all the liabilities and issues related to the business; that the seller may have not disclosed. Risk cannot be eliminated entirely, but it can be mitigated. As a buyer, you should ascertain: • How good the cash flow situation is; • Whether there are any hidden liabilities; • If key employees will be staying at the company; • Whether company books/ records are up to date; • That any leases on premises are in order and have not yet expired; and • What insurance policies are in place. If the legal due diligence report does highlight certain areas of concern, you may choose to renegotiate with the seller on key elements of the deal, such as the purchase price. You may also seek specific indemnities from the seller in respect of any areas which could expose the buyer to potential future risk. If after risk assessment and full due diligence is concluded you and the seller are happy to proceed, you will then have to prepare a draft acquisition agreement which will be reviewed by the seller. Findings from the due diligence report will undoubtedly be factored in as required. If you have any questions regarding due diligence following this article, you can get in touch with us. We offer a free initial chat for all new clients. 01202 499255 | kedwards@frettens.co.uk www.frettens.co.uk

Could the key to optimal health be found in your gut? You may have heard about gut health and the microbiome, but what does it really mean and how does it make a difference to your mental health and overall wellbeing? In 2008 a Danish professor, using the latest DNA technology discovered the enormous number of bacteria that are in our gut. Since then, we have learnt about the importance of these bacteria and how ensuring that our gut is flourished with ‘good bacteria’ makes us happy healthy and full of energy and helps protect us from many diseases. Scientists are increasingly convinced that many of the diseases that threaten our mental health occur in the gut and by eating real natural food these can be prevented. Good bacteria seal the intestinal walls, preventing harmful toxins from penetrating and spreading disease into the rest of our body. Therefore, sustaining a diverse range of good gut bacteria could help us fight a range of mental and neurological diseases. What supports a healthy microbiome and what disrupts it? The microbiome exists as a delicate balance and there are a number of ways you can both support and disrupt its natural rhythms. A healthy gut flora is established from birth and evidence shows that the process of a natural birth, furnishes the baby vital microbes which doesn’t occur with a caesarean birth, and this is further supported by breastfeeding. This flora continues to be colonised and by the age of one an infant’s gut microbiome begins to resemble that of an adult. Trillions of bacteria keep our

microbiome healthy and dense, stopping harmful substances from penetrating the bloodstream and triggering inflammation. Having a balance of ‘good bacteria’ can protect against type 2 diabetes, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, colon cancer and depression. However too much sugar, fat, alcohol, sterile environments, stress, poor sleep, and inactivity are detrimental to the microbiome and lead to imbalances. As we age, we may experience a decline in the stability of the gut microbiome due to weakened immune function. Love your gut Diets high in sugar, artificial sweeteners, food additives and meat products are associated with an unhealthy microbiome; a recent study shows that participants who consumed a diet high in animal products were more likely to host an overgrowth of microorganisms capable of triggering inflammatory bowel disease. Inversely, some studies suggest that plant-based diets are linked to a diverse and healthy gut microbiome. Even if you’re not ready to commit to a plantbased diet, you can still support your gut by focusing on consuming naturally sourced fibre. This can be supported by high-quality probiotics, commonly referred to as ‘friendly’ bacteria. Foods high in probiotics include fermented products like yogurt, sauerkraut, tempeh, kimchi, miso, kombucha and apple cider vinegar. These products might not be on your weekly shopping list, but they are well worth testing out due to their spectacular probiotic content. Similarly, prebiotics have been shown to support gut health. Prebiotics are the non-digestible fibre that probiotics feed off. Examples of foods rich in prebiotics include raw or cooked onions, raw asparagus, leeks, bananas, artichokes, and chicory root. The great news is that diet is the most important factor influencing gut microbiome composition and even within a relatively short period of time, small adjustments can have a significant impact. Therefore it is never too late to make changes. www.dorsetchamber.co.uk

Connecting in Nature The connection between humans and nature has been understood for hundreds of years and recently science has given us more reasons to believe in the benefits of having a deeper connection with nature and how staying close to it can improve our wellbeing, health, and relationships. The pandemic and subsequent lockdowns forced many of us to seek ways of de-stressing and alternative forms of exercise. Developmental psychologists think that we are genetically predisposed to seek a connection with nature. Leading researchers suggest we have a built-in bias towards natural environments. Some have suggested that we prefer natural spaces because they provided us with everything we needed to prosper and evolve as a species. Whether this preference for nature is coded in our genes or not is still subject to debate within the scientific community. It is clear there are a myriad of the beneficial effects of connecting with nature which can help to heal the body and soul, reduce stress and improve mood and overall psychological wellbeing. As a result at Dorset Chamber we are hosting a monthly connecting in nature walk. It is open to members and non-members alternating between three locations; Upton Country Park, Sandbanks Beach and Highcliffe Beach. It is a chance to meet up, connect and talk and network, at the same time enjoying the outdoors, getting steps in and walking your dog if you wish! Our next walk will be at Sandbanks Beach, main car park on 8th April, commencing 8.00am – 9.30am.

Suttle Stone Quarries makes crucial progress in its drive to become Carbon Neutral In its drive to become carbon neutral, Dorsetbased stone experts Suttle Stone Quarries has invested in an extensive combination of measures, upgrading its equipment and processes as part of its ongoing decarbonisation strategy. The company, part of the Suttles group, has succeeded in reducing its carbon footprint by almost 400 tCO2e since 2018 and its most recent measures have led to savings of nearly 100 tCO2e throughout 2021. In its drive to become carbon neutral, Suttle Stone Quarries has so far invested in the following measures: •

• • • • 50

Topped up grants from Low Carbon Dorset to install 120 Solar panels at its Worth Matravers quarry site. The solar power generates electricity to provide power for its quarry workshop, security, and any fixed electrical systems. It also helps to power the quarry’s 160kW stone crusher motor, which was previously upgraded from diesel to electric, reducing the reliance on fossil fuel energy sources. Reduced its level of diesel-powered equipment. Upgraded from heating oil to a renewably sourced heating system at its quarry office. Upgraded electrical fittings with energy efficient alternatives. Transferred to renewable electricity. March 2022 | Dorset Business Focus

Additional solar panels were installed at sister company Suttle Projects’ Hamworthy site, powering its workshop whilst helping to charge its fleet of electric vehicles. Over the past 2 years, the Suttles group, which includes Suttle Stone Quarries and Suttle Projects, has continued to invest in its vehicles and processes to reduce its greenhouse gas impact. Suttles now has a growing fleet of 19 electric and hybrid vehicles and plant, replacing petrol or diesel versions. It has also achieved ‘silver’ status by the voluntary ‘Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme’, which demonstrates operators are achieving exemplary levels of best practice in environmental protection, as well as safety and efficiency. Suttle Projects is also accredited to ISO standards, where the company meets internationally recognised standards for its environment management systems. Carbon and greenhouse gas emissions are often split into scope 1, 2 & 3 for reporting and Suttles’ decarbonisation strategy has allowed them to understand and target reduction to those in categories 1 & 2, with scope 3 next in their sights. Suttles’ Director, John Suttle, added “We are always striving to minimise any negative impact we may have on the environment. As the peak demand for our electricity is during daylight hours, it made sense for us to invest in solar /company/dorset-chamber/

power, which not only mitigates soaring energy costs, but also significantly helps us in our drive for carbon neutrality. Although we have made big changes in our business so far, we recognise that these are just our first steps en route to becoming carbon neutral.” John goes on to say “Suttles’ decarbonisation strategy will involve setting science-based emission reduction targets this spring, setting us further on our path towards net zero carbon. The next initiative that will help us achieve those goals is the continued roll-out of HVO, an extremely clean and low CO2 fuel, across our LGV and plant fleet.” “We are also keen to help the wider community in its decarbonisation process based on our experiences. For example, we provided input for Dorset LEP’s report on Dorset’s low carbon investment opportunities, which documents 10 energy investment opportunities, to help Dorset achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.” www.suttles.co.uk

MSP Capital’s Auction Bridging Loan secures first bidding success A newly launched bridging loan product aimed at the growing property auction market has secured its first bidding success. Poole-based MSP Capital’s Auction Bridging Loan has helped developer Remarkable Refurbs buy a flat in a prime location near the seafront in St Leonards, East Sussex. The one-bedroom, ground-floor property needs extensive refurbishment and was sold for £126,000 through Clive Emson Auctioneers. Having identified the flat’s potential, Remarkable Refurbs turned to the bridging loan to pre-arrange funding and secure a credit-backed offer so they could place their bid with confidence. Keith Lovsey, Managing Director of Remarkable Refurbs, said: “I was concerned about timescales so it was great to be dealing with a company well versed in turning offers, valuations and legal documents around quickly and answering enquiries very fast.” Launched at the end of November 2021, the bridging loan is specifically tailored to help clients looking to buy residential properties at auctions with rates starting from 0.54% per month. The product comes with fixed legal fees, zero exit fee options and the promise of no valuation fees for properties worth under £1 million. Clients can borrow up to 70% loan-to-value with a maximum single property value of £3 million. Interest in the new bridging loan comes as the national auction market continues to see substantial growth in popularity. The trigger was last year’s stamp duty holiday combined with the migration to online auctions due to the pandemic. Chris Wright, auction product lead at MSP Capital, said: “More and more buyers are choosing the auction route over estate agents. To meet their needs for loan finance, we have designed our auction bridging loan as a specialist product to help bidders as they make their preparations for auction day, which can sometimes be a stressful, ‘against the clock’-type experience. “It is really encouraging that so soon after launch we have been able to help a developer such as Remarkable Refurbs secure their desired lot. “It’s all about providing clients – whether they are a developer, private individual, more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

joint borrower, partnership or company – with the added confidence to place that all-important bid there and then knowing the necessary funds are in place.” The bridging loan applies to all residential property types that are vacant, let on AST (assured shorthold tenancy) or in need of refurbishment, with commercial properties considered on a case-by-case basis. Clive Emson Auctioneers Director and Senior Auction Appraiser Sam Kinloch said: “We continue to embrace the latest technology to bring our property and land auctions to the widest possible audience – with prospective

purchasers able to bid from the comfort of their own homes anywhere around the world. “Therefore, we welcome any initiatives by service providers – such as that by MSP Capital which has launched a new specialised product to make it even easier for bidders to get funding – recognising how our industry is becoming an increasingly important way of buying and selling. “Although we are unable to endorse specific products, we are gratified to learn of new developments designed specially to complement our work and to offer an extended range of choices to customers.” www.mspcapital.co.uk 51

Car Review: New fully electric Kia EV6 Kia proves itself once again, stepping up its game and making its mark in the EV market. With an impressive driving range of up to 328 miles, it’s no wonder the EV6 was named as What Car?’s ‘Car of the Year’ for 2022. Add this to the low running costs and trailblazing charging speeds, and taking ownership soon starts to sound very appealing. The 77.4kWh battery offers 228hp with rear-wheel drive or 325hp with all-wheel drive, with the former providing an outstanding 328mile range – a proud, pioneering stance for Kia in the electric era. In terms of design, the exterior is notably quite a bit wider than other Kia models, and long compared to other crossovers too. The interior has lots of loud, retro-feel features, so all in all, expect to stand out with the unique styling. The touchscreen infotainment system is clear, logically laid out and responsive, allowing you to seamlessly control the plethora of advanced

driver assist technologies, many of which come fitted as standard, but are easy to turn off if you’re not a fan. What’s more, with Kia‘s 7-year/100,000-mile warranty – also extending to the battery – it seems like a no-brainer. Verdict: If you’re looking to go electric, it’s certainly worth adding the Kia EV6 to your shortlist. With plenty of safety and sustainability features, incomparable range and loads of storage, it’s the perfect car for families and fuel-conscious drivers. We are seriously impressed with Kia’s first fully electric offering – and give it the Hendy seal of approval. Think the Kia EV6 is what you’re looking for? Book a test drive at one of the Hendy Kia showrooms in Ferndown, Eastleigh, Tunbridge Wells, Portsmouth or Salisbury to experience the Kia EV6 for yourself. www.hendy.co.uk

What changes are you noticing? Here in Dorset, we are so fortunate to live and work by the sea. Taking a walk along the coast one day it struck me that the sea is a metaphor for change and represents what is happening now in the world of work, explains Graham Stickland, Director at Contact Consulting. Like the tides of the sea, change in organisations is constant, ebbing and flowing throughout our working lives. Some days it is calm and tranquil with very little change. Other days it is rough and choppy with wave after wave hitting us, knocking us sideways before we have had time to recover from the first one, making us feel like we are drowning in the sea of change. Unlike the theory, change is never a straight line or curve with a defined start and end, things are always moving and adapting. The last couple of years have brought a tidal wave of change –

the beginning of a new era for our relationship with and experience of work. People are reconsidering why, how, and where they work. This questioning extends to the expectations people have of their organisations, their managers and their learning and development. Here at Contact Consulting, we are noticing there are 4 big changes taking place in organisations – •

March 2022 | Dorset Business Focus

The beginning of the end of the hierarchical mindset and its individualistic, top-down style towards more transversal, collaborative networks The role of the manager away from knowing best and having the answers to coaching and enabling Organisation centric to more employee centric ways of working that put employees’ needs at the heart of their work and encourage ownership and accountability The focus on social and environmental wellbeing and sustainability as drivers of discretionary effort more than traditional performance management with a focus on KPIs and targets /company/dorset-chamber/

We are working with a number of clients helping managers adapt their roles and skills to successfully navigate these changes. For example, developing the skills to ask open coaching questions rather than a top down ‘tell’ encourages input and contribution. This can aid problem solving and innovation which are proven to improve engagement and business performance. Some may welcome these developments or fear the potential loss of what is familiar. One thing is for certain, we can’t stop the inevitable tides of change, but we can learn to navigate towards calmer waters. As Jon Kabat-Zinn said You can’t stop the waves …….but you can learn to surf

International Trade Updates

Would you climb a mountain without training? Most people would agree that training is important in life to carry out tasks successfully and, in some cases, safely. No one sensible would attempt to scale a mountain without undertaking training first. They would be putting their life in danger. The same is true in business and training brings significant benefits as well as enabling people to carry out tasks properly. Training is beneficial for organisations and employees alike. For organisations it delivers more efficiency leading to increased profitability, improved employee satisfaction and morale, and helps with accreditations valued by customers and other stakeholders. Consider this – are your people trained to meet the requirements that keep your company safe and well run? Organisations have statutory compliance requirements to meet and must ensure their staff are trained on exactly what that means. For individual employees, undertaking training increases their worth, improves performance and morale and makes them more valuable now and in the future. For some years, International Trade Matters Ltd has been working with Dorset Chamber of Commerce to build and deliver the British Chambers of Commerce international accredited training courses. The training programme has operated since 2013 and can lead to the BCC Foundation Award in International Trade. This is a nationally recognised, NVQ 2 equivalent, qualification. There are eleven modules in the programme, and each offers a credit towards the award. Six credits are needed to receive the award, but it may be that some roles only need two or three. Not everyone completes all the modules required for the award and is completely fine. It is important that training is undertaken which is relevant to someone’s role. Imagine undertaking that mountain climbing training but not going near a mountain for a year or two. There is a reason training in

topics such as safety and first aid need to be refreshed periodically – you forget knowledge if you don’t have the opportunity to put it to use. In addition to the BCC Award, bespoke training is also considered a good option by many businesses. If the qualification isn’t as important as the knowledge, a training programme built around your international trade activities is often more time-efficient and cost-effective. We are in turbulent times in the international trade arena. Not only are we coming out of a global pandemic, but we are also learning the realities of trading post-Brexit and still seen changes to rules in that area. Now is therefore a critical time to ensure your staff have the skills they need. Here at ITM, we have always had a very flexible approach to training because we know that every company is different. We deliver public courses in partnership with Chambers of Commerce. We have adapted these to be delivered online in response to recent changes in people’s working practices. We offer bespoke training either in-person or online that is tailored to the needs of individual companies, and even individual teams. Happily, our courses are well received by attendees. We monitor feedback after each course and continually develop the materials and the content. Imagine our delight when we reviewed the feedback at the end of 2021 and found that over half of attendees gave us an overall rating of “Excellent”. “Great Course. Very Helpful. The trainer was well informed.” “The trainer was so easy to listen to

Frances Fawcett, Export Consultant at International Trade Matters

and explained everything perfectly.” “Well experienced, knowledge of the trainers was excellent. Definitely worth it and absolutely necessary to take these courses for every business in international trading.” “Mike was an excellent presenter. His knowledge and his style of delivery was very good.” “Very clear and well executed by Frances.” “It was a great experience - informative and interactive and I felt able to get bespoke answers and info to address my particular needs.” “Would like to thank Frances for this training, it’s given me a better understanding keep up the good work :)” “Mike was absolutely brilliant. so much knowledge he has.” Businesses large and small are facing challenging times now. It is therefore critical that your teams can work as skilfully and effectively as possible to increase your productivity and, as is always so vital, ensure you are meeting your compliance obligations. Some would say that recent global challenges at the same time as leaving the EU gives many businesses a mountain to scale. Let us help you gain the skills to scale that mountain safely and successfully.
