Aboutt editor in chief &art director

features editor & photographer

Kate has had her fair share of experimenting in different disciplines but a creative future seemed set in stone from an early age. Her indefatigable artistic talent continued to surface and when she returned to New Zealand after years travelling, she bought her first computer. Producing her own wedding invitation led to the opening of her business, Ruby & Willow Design Studio. Building on the immense success of her Magnolia Rouge blog, Kate as the editor in chief of {MAG}rouge is the key to the uncompomising aesthetic and inspiration of the magazine.

After gaining qualifications in History Jasmine took up an IT career, though she never forgot her youthful dreams of winning amateur photo competitions. Finally she understood her true calling: photography and art. Having always had a combined passion for photography with her dear friend Hannah, from their days in the art room at high school, they founded Sutherland Kovach Studio, and the rest is history! Their mission is to create a beautiful sweet world through their images. Jasmine is also crazy about her small daughter and the domestic arts.

Hannah’s interest in photography dates back to her childhood when at an early age she became obsessed with discovering how the 3D world could be transferred to paper through a magic box. After completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Elam she worked in the BBC’s Picture Publicity Dept and on the set of Harry Potter 6 in the photography department. In 2008 she returned home and joined forces with her one of her oldest, dearest and most visionary friends Jasmine, in the successful enterprise of Sutherland Kovach Studio.

Judit started her adult life as an economist and marketer in her home country of Hungary. After marrying and having two beautiful girls, she travelled the world, finally stopping at the farthest corner of it in a place called New Zealand. It was here where she finally realized that her best recipe for success would be her culinary skills, sweet tooth, art and craft and marketing talent, and went on to form her business, Artisan Cakes. She still delights clients worldwide, this time not with her incisive ad campaigns but delicious treats from her cake kitchen.

a few words with

ELIZABETH MESSINA

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions, we are thrilled to have you and your beautiful work in our third issue! First off, can you explain a bit about how you became a photographer? Had you always wanted to be one? My mother gave me a camera when I was twelve... I loved it & photographed my friends & surrounding all the time, but I had no real understanding that I could BE a photographer...it wasn't until many years later in college that I took a photo class as an elective & my whole world changed. I transferred to art school & the rest as they say is history. How do you approach your work? What sort of preparation, whether it be intellectual/emotional or physical, do you do for your shoots? In my heart I am an artist, I want to capture something genuine. I look for beauty in everything in life & try to capture it. In order to prepare for a shoot, I am quite organized, from film to cameras, to directions...if all of my necessities are in order than I feel more comfortable and able to indulge the artistic side of myself. How do you fill your 'creative well'? Do you set aside time to shoot personal work? In truth all of my work is personal in some aspect. That I think is the sweet part about being a professional artist. There are times I do feel run down of course, however time with my family always makes me feel better. I love to cook & hang out barefoot in the backyard. I think it is life that fuels my creativity; my most personal work is photographing my children.

What does a typical workday look like for you? The truth is there is no "typical" workday. Some days I am shooting, other days I am editing & packaging, other days meeting with clients, and yet other days I'm on a field trip with one of my children and so on. No matter what I am doing, my days are long... I am up early & busy throughout the day. Sometimes I play hooky in the morning & go to breakfast with my husband (I love those days). Who or what is your biggest inspiration? Love... my children... I think inspiration comes from having a full heart. For me that starts at home & gives me a sense of purpose. I also love to stroll through antiques stores and lately pinterest has captivated my attention on many evenings. I love pretty paper products, vinatge crowns & almost any shade of grey. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would that be? Ahhhh that is a hard one... I think I'd love to have a beautiful old home somewhere in Europe... and yet I always feel most happy when I am close to where I grew up in Santa Barbara, so if I am dreaming I'd have a house abroard & one in Santa Barbara... and yet I've never been to New Zealand, maybe I'd want one there too :-) What are your favourite things to do on your days off? Sleep... snuggles... a whole lot of nothing. Picture PJ's all day, children making a serious mess, good food, lots of laughter & kisses, then maybe a movie in bed (which I inevitably fall alseep half way through) = perfection!

ONE OF TWO COPIES OF ELIZABETH MESSINA'S NEW BOOK!

Q&A with

TheWedding Chicks Amy and Jocey are the Wedding Chicks - two industry powerhouses whose well known blog provides daily inspiration, showcasing the best of the best when it comes to weddings. They also offer beautiful items to snazz up your wedding day in their shop, and have started a spin-off site, On To Baby. As well as being accomplished businesswomen, they are two of the nicest people you could hope to meet and we are so happy to be sharing their amazing shoot with Elizabeth Messina!

What was your original inspiration? Our original inspiration was drawn from wedding dress designer Lindee Daniel and her gorgeous natural organic wedding gowns. We were kind of all over the place with ideas as we often are. The lovely Elizabeth Messina along with the amazing Jeni Maus of Found Vintage Rentals really shaped the look and feel of the shoot.

What comes to mind when you think of 'Harvest'? Harvest brings to mind our favorite time of year, leaves changing, muted colors, peace and quiet and the most gorgeous light.

What is your favourite part of putting together a shoot?

Our favorite part would definitely be the end result, to see what was envisioned come to life through the eyes of a photographer as incredible as Elizabeth Messina and the styling of Jeni Maus is just amazing. Elizabeth and Jeni brought everything together and created something more than we could have imagined.

What does a typical day look like for the Wedding Chicks?

We work virtually with the help of iChat, and each have defined roles as far as what we do at Wedding Chicks. On any given day we do a ton of brainstorming, self assessment and have a few good laughs. We are currently working on how to leave our offices by 5 pm... so far no luck!

What do you love most about your job? We absolutely love everything about our jobs and are so grateful to be in such a creative industry. Working alongside your best friend and getting to enjoy our small successes is better than anything we could have dreamed of.

What's your number one piece of advice for brides looking to plan their own beautiful wedding?

Remember why you are getting married and create the wedding that is right for you.

Deirdre & Bob S A N S E B A S T I A N | S PA I N PHOTOGR APHY by AARON DELESIE EVEN T DESIGN & PRODUCT ION by LISA VORCE FLOR AL AND EVENT DESIGN by MINDY RICE

Bob and Deirdre met during a real estate open house that Deirdre was managing in Hermosa Beach, California. Suffice to say, after meeting Deirdre Bob was not so concerned with buying the property, and so begins Bob and Deirdre's love story.

To ensure their destination wedding came off without a hitch, Deirdre and Bob enlisted event planners Lisa Vorce and Mindy Rice, who together with their photographers, transformed the couple's vision of their perfect wedding experience into an event that, in their words, far exceeded their wildest dreams. Their favourite moments of the day were: receiving what felt like a blessing from the entire city, when they exited the church and were greeted by over 200 locals, a traditional Basque dancing troupe that performed a authentic wedding celebration dance ("jota"), and when an elderly woman pulled the couple aside during the festivities to hold their hands and give them her blessing in Basque.

Deirdre and Bob took a trip to Spain together in 2008 - a country close to Bob's heart having lived there as a student and visited almost every year since. Upon arriving in vibrant San Sebastian “it became clear to both of us was that if we ever decided to tie the knot, [the city] was high up on the list of destination wedding spots!

Deirdre says that “San Sebastian is a city that has the charm of an ancient Spanish town, steeped in history, yet it also provides the benefits you desire from a cosmopolitan destination. The food is spectacular, with more Michelin rated restaurants per capita than Paris. All of these facts, coupled with the fact that San Sebastian has some of the best beaches in all of Spain, made this northern Spanish town an ideal destination for us!

The goal of any great destination wedding is to capture the spirit of that destination. This wedding in Spain’s Basque Country did just that. The food, the dance, the music… everything. Lisa Vorce and Mindy Rice designed an event that deeply infused the Basque spirit without being gimmicky or overdone. The church was as stunning as they get in this part of Spain and the gastronomic society where the reception was held was the perfect setting for a small Basque style dinner. It was so fitting that Lisa and Mindy chose to use a gastronomic society perched high on the hill overlooking the gorgeous cityscape of San Sebastian. It is how the locals party. It was perfect! Aaron Delesie, photographer

Credits

Deirdre advises other brides to be present and enjoy every moment. “Realize that every detail of your wedding preparation (hair, makeup, putting on your dress, etc) is something to savour. These times are also beautiful and fun memories of the wedding day...so don't rush through them or stress.”

Here in New Zealand, it's late autumn and the feijoas are ready for picking. Our bride-to-be has invited her friends to a feijoa orchard for brunch, and to ask them to be her bridesmaids. On the menu are some delectable treats - homemade donuts, dainty sandwiches, feijoa tarts, and some delicious sparkling feijoa wine. What a wonderful way to take time out and celebrate friendships!

What is a feijoa? A feijoa, also known as a pineapple guava or guavasteen, is a native of South America and widely available in New Zealand where many people have a tree in their garden. The feijoa is normally cut in half and eaten with a spoon but is also extremely versatile and great in cooking and baking. It tastes like pineapple, strawberry, guava and mint together. Its distinctive taste is highly addictive, that is why it is a popular fruit here.

KISMET & Nitin CHANDIGARH | INDIA

PHOTOGRAPHY by CARMEN & INGO

ismet and Nitin are from the small town of Chandigarh in Northern India. Having friends in common meant that it wasn't long before they bumped into each other! During their initial courtship they would go for long walks and enjoy catching up via instant messaging. The primary focus for how the wedding would look involved a bounty of flowers. From there the day seemed to take on a farm/field theme. Kismet says, "the liliums and kale were from friends who grow them up in the hills in Manali, Himachal Pradesh. They gave us 500 stems!"

heir toughest decision was whether to have a destination wedding or not. In the end the perfect venue presented itself in the form of a family friend's farm in their hometown. "Choosing that as the venue meant literally having to create everything from scratch. We planted the grass, the flowers, landscaped, watered, and practically became gardeners during those four months before the wedding. It was the best decision we made!" Kismet and Nitin describe their wedding as incomparable, unreal and perfect.

The photographers say...

It's been on our wish list for quite some time to cover an Indian wedding. India is one of our most favorite countries in the world (together with NZ) and we were completely honored that Kismet and Nitin choose us to be part of their amazing event in Chandigarh. For us, we have not just met so many wonderful and friendly people, but we also got to photograph the loveliest couple on this planet. To capture this day and it's beauty to make it unforgettable for the bride and groom was an easy task. Everything was just beautiful and prepared with so much love. Little do Kismet and Nitin know that actually they made it an unforgettable experience for us! We're thankful to them for stepping into our lives!

Laura and Jamie always knew that they wanted to get married in Tuscany as it holds a special place in their hearts. After some research they found the stunning Stomennano and they were completely sold! They decided on a slight vintage theme to match the incredible location. As the venue, which dates back to the 17th century, is amazingly rich in both art and history, they did not need many details to add to it.

e

Though their big day was tinted with sadness as their mutual and beloved friend who introduced them had lost his battle with cancer not long before, they were very happy that around one hundred guests made the trip from all over the world to celebrate with them. Their advice for anyone getting married abroad is to get a local wedding planner as they found it absolutely invaluable!

Laura & Jamie's wedding was always going to be a lovely one with Stomenanno as a backdrop. When we met for coffee last year, I knew that they would be a treat to photograph and I'm so pleased they had me photograph their wedding. From their beautiful outdoor ceremony blessing to the alfresco evening meal, everything was just gorgeous and Jamie & Laura were relaxed and at ease all day. Despite the heat and humidity they looked cool, calm and collected and so very much in love.

LAUREN & MARK Adelaide Hills, South Australia

WHITE WALL PHOTOGRAPHY

0212

Lauren and Mark met at their church and got married at The White House in Adelaide Hills. This beautiful

heritage cottage that was once a family home, has a wonderful ‘secret garden’, making it the perfect venue for the simple elegant wedding they wanted to create with a few rustic touches. This special location was one of the couple’s highlights of the day and it’s easy to see why from their gorgeous pictures! With any open air event there is a weather risk, especially in the Adelaide Hills. There was a short time where the guests hid amongst the trees and barns until the rain passed by, but then everything was dried off and the reception then began. Live music, food to be shared and touches of rustic goodness every where to be seen.

040212

"You really cant go wrong with a beautiful couple both inside and out, but a willingness to hop fences to find the perfect field for the perfect shot and not even letting a little rain shower dampen the open air wedding was so refreshing. It was a great day with amazing people and we feel blessed to have shared in their day" White Wall Photography

SWEET talk with vanessa iti and judit meron

A funny coincidence is that she is also an accidental cake artist, who originally just wanted to make a beautiful cake for her daughter`s first birthday (for me it was my daughter`s fifth birthday).

Vanessa lights up when she talks about cakes! You can immediately feel that the passion she talks about on her website is not an empty marketing brief. With different backgrounds, and even accents we quickly connect using the language of cakers!

I knew we were in for a treat when we arrived in a picturesque suburb of Auckland to meet the very talented Vanessa from Bella Cupcakes. When she opened the door to her sunlit cake studio we were welcomed into a whimsical place full of carefully selected colorful vintage decorations, neatly arranged details and of course, a gorgeous selection of her cake and cupcake creations.

A nice and – usually - stress free part of planning the big day is the wedding cake! Ornate or simple and rustic, it is always a talking point at weddings with the tasting being highly anticipated! Here, two fellow cake makers had a chat about the sweet life as they know it!

p

With her comprehensive design background, careful eye for detail, patience and passion her hobby quickly turned into a thriving business success. Vanessa has a huge Facebook and Flickr following and with her latest appearance in the New Zealand's Hottest Home Baker TV show, she is the celebrity cake decorator in our corner of the world! She loves creating wedding cakes, especially the currently very popular vintage themed ones. Vanessa believes that designing a wedding cake is only limited by our own imagination, and if you browse through her impressive photos you will see that she means it! Wedding cakes are sometimes more conservative with colour choices (white, ivory) so she lives out her love for bolder hues with her amazing birthday cupcakes and styled photo shoots. When it comes to her advice of when to contact the cake designer while planning a wedding she agrees it should be immediately: “as soon as you know the date!" Artisan cake makers have very limited capacities and the popular season dates fill quickly! The more details (theme, colours, flowers, stationery, dresses, decorations…) you can present to your cake maker, the better she can envision your big day and design your dream cake to fit perfectly into your wedding celebrations. For me it was very reassuring to learn that Vanessa also has butterflies in her stomach while delivering those fragile creations: a whole week's labour of love can be seriously damaged by an unnoticed bump on the road in a split second! But let`s not think about that…if you`ll excuse me, I must go and get myself a slice of cake after all that sweet talk!

THE CHATEAU | Tongariro National Park Photography by Sutherland Kovach

F

rom the moment Dana & Jack arrived at the Chateau for their first “reconnaissance trip, they immediately had a great feeling. They’d seen the Chateau in the distance while trekking the famous Tongariro Crossing in 2010 and describe that trip as a significant milestone in their relationship hence their attachment to the area for their engagement and wedding planning. Dana and Jack attribute two elements to making their wedding an absolute success. The first was having all their friends and family in such an incredible place. The second was all the incredible support they received from "the welcoming and genuine staff" at the Bayview Chateau, especially wedding co-ordinator Estelle Dawes. "Estelle really made a big difference, and both us of would highlight the benefits of finding someone who you really have faith in to help make your wedding stress-free and to run smoothly"

The hills are alive...

T

he Bayview Chateau was opened in 1929 at the base of Mt Ruapehu in New Zealand. It is said to have cemented the atmosphere of Ruapehu as an international ski resort and became a popular scene for wealthy travellers from all over the globe. It still retains an air of grand opulence so Dana and Jack let this decide their theme, using 1920s cut crystal vases and candle holders around the reception room. They also enjoyed the use of the grand piano in the lounge. ‘If I Ain’t Got You’ by Alicia Keys was chosen for Dana’s walk down the aisle and is one of her and Jack's favourite memories of the day along with the informal post-reception party in the lounge, again accompanied by the gorgeous piano. The couple said "it was the perfect way to wind down and reflect on their amazing day."

“It was really exciting to walk around the hotel in both the lead-up to and the wind-down from the actual wedding, bumping into people and having informal catch-ups, it felt like we were able to see and talk to everyone who made the trip.

This beautiful collaboration of some great talent was inspired by the film Bright Star which is based on the last three years of the life of poet John Keats and his romantic relationship with Fanny Brawne.

Marta tells us: "Fete Studio did an amazing job incorporating poetry, butterflies

and

classic

old English florals in a contemporary way and capturing it on film really lets the colours shine.

A non-traditional dove gray gown picked up the sunlit fields and spring breeze perfectly. The florals added a great touch throughout...there were even cloche jars with small plants and butterflies in them!

The combination of the colours fit the invite to pure perfection and the show stopper Maggie Austin cake became the centerpiece of the bride and groom table.

PHOTOGRAPHY by ELIZABETH MESSINA

C

Caren and Neal met in 2002 and their affection for Golden Retriever puppies quickly turned into a love for each other. Their Californian wedding was romantic and glamourous with soft vintage touches. Shades of pinks, peaches, ivory and gold were everywhere, with an abundance of soft flowers and beautiful laces. The outdoor cocktail area overlooked the ocean with dark wood tables and barstools, whereas the reception area was draped entirely of soft white with the addition of magnificent chandeliers.

T

To be able to spend as much time with their guests they opted for a "first look" moment before the ceremony so that they could take most of their portraits prior to the event. The first look happened in the privacy of the bridal suite and Elizabeth, their photographer, took some magical pictures! They hired a bilingual MC for the event, who was very good at catering to their Chinese guests as well as entertaining them with games which are traditional at Chinese weddings. Caren and Neal advise couples in the middle of planning to "take time to enjoy the wedding process, you only do it once!"

Persimmon

MILLEFEUILLE

1

This great autumn treat recipe is not just quick, easy and mouthwatering looking but it also lets the persimmon be the hero in its best, natural form!

2

Peel and cut some nice, big persimmons into thin slices

Put some sugar (white or brown) on the persimmon slices and put them under a very hot grill to quickly caramelize the top (I used a blowtorch which is a great and useful kitchen utensil for other things too, meringue, toasted marshmallows...)

5

3

Keep layering the cream and persimmon slices until about 10 cm height.

Layer the crispy, caramel persimmon slices with the cream

6

Prepare the cream by mixing mascarpone with a spoonful of thick creme fraiche, sugar to taste, a pinch of cinnamon and ground cloves and the seeds of a vanilla pod, or a tablespoon of good vanilla essence

4

Sprinkle with roughly chopped pistachio on the top and serve immediately!

Bon appetit!

brookeandjake orange county california photography by Tyler Branch

They describe their wedding as “a labour of love. There wasn’t a single guest present that hadn’t helped us in some way. It made everything that much more special knowing each individual had contributed to our celebration and helped prepare us for marriage. It was a community effort made up of all our loved ones.” From the start, Jake and Brooke, who have been together since high school, wanted an outdoor venue, surrounded by trees and sunshine but also guest friendly(i.e no hiking involved). This proved to be much harder to find than the couple originally expected. After searching blogs, national parks, regional parks, Google Maps, and more, they found the perfect place, Santiago Oaks Regional Park.

When we asked Jake and Brooke for three words that described

their wedding, they said, “Us. Joyous. Relaxed.”

The couple almost didn’t get their sunny wedding as it rained for three days prior, which they describe as being uncharacteristic for this part of California. On the day of the wedding itself, the cloudy skies broke open and they were able to say their vows in glorious sunshine, as they’d hoped. Their favourite moment of the day was the first dance, which, in their words, was initially awkward, as they hadn’t discussed it, or practiced! “Somewhere around minute three of our five minute song, a guest yelled for the bridal party to join in. Somehow that turned into them joining hands, forming a circle around us, and circling as we were keeled over in laughter. Needless to say, it was memorable!”

JOSHandHELEN riverhead | new zealand photography by Danelle Bohane

Helen & Josh met at their local church and say that love naturally blossomed from there. Whilst they didn't have a specific theme for their wedding they did have a strong vision of what the day would look and feel like. Their vision mainly revolved around escaping from the city to the country, to a beautiful hall which they could decorate to be a reflection of themselves. The perfect hall was found in Riverhead, a small country town on the outskirts of Auckland. After a day of asking around and going on a drive in the country the couple knew they had found their venue when they arrived at Riverhead Citizen's Hall.

We really like photos that feel warm...

which is where the rug idea came in, something to add warmth and comfort to the photos. We also like wide landscapes, natural light and lots of greenery which don't necessarily always look or feel warm. We then came up with the idea of a backdrop within a backdrop. The rug brought warmth into the photos but we still got the natural light and interesting greenery behind.

Helen says it is important to think about what you want your day to be like before you start organising. She advises to focus primarily on what each person feels is most important and go from there. The couple wanted to bring all the people they love, together to celebrate. "We had an awesome covers band ‘Hey Baby’ play at our reception. This made for a super fun dance that everyone got into and ended our party perfectly." Arriving at the reception and having all their friends and family welcome them into such a vibrant environment is their most treasured memory of the day. They will never forget "the atmosphere of having everyone we know and love in one place celebrating with us".

amanda& brendan Photography by We are The Parsons

Amanda and Brendan dated for six years prior to their wedding day. They describe their day as "a very emotional and spiritual time. We felt peace and serenity: the entire day had a peaceful feeling over it. Our bride and groom parties prayed for us before the ceremony. Lots of happy tears and thanksgiving."

The couple wanted to have their ceremony and reception completely outdoors so they approached Amanda's grandparents to host it on their property who warmly agreed. "We are so thankful to them for being the most amazing hosts imaginable. They even let the wedding party spend the night prior to the wedding in their Airstream and artist studio." They didn't have a specific theme for their outdoor wedding however it was important "to keep things as simple as possible. Everything was very natural and a bit magical." One of Amanda's favourite memories is "sneaking away to the woods with Brendan to be photographed by the Parsons."

Another is a special surprise from her dad who ran off to a field as they were getting into their car to leave. "He had prepared fireworks for our departure. It was awesome to be sent off with sparklers and fireworks."

Amanda and Brendan's advice to couples planning their wedding is "Don’t get crazy, its completely unnecessary. There is a lot on the to-do list but it is important to be present with your fiance, friends and family. "

confessions OF A WEDDING PLANNER

by Rhiannon Nicole

One of the questions I frequently get from my blog readers is, “what did you do to get where you are now?” I often question the actual state of 'where I am now,' which usually involves myself in the spare room of our home, drinking copious amounts of lattes while becoming one with my laptop. But hey, I too remember starting my business and feeling like there were a billion questions I desperately wanted answers to. What I did was my unique way of getting to where I am now (where I am in the non literal sense of course). Let it be known that my way isn't a foolproof plan that guarantees success or happiness but instead a formula that was unique to my story and journey. Either way, below are a few tips I think every aspiring wedding planner should know. {START A BLOG} I’ve said it before and ten years from now I’ll say it again, but my blog has always been the biggest most monumental part of getting my wedding planning business up and running. And funny enough, my blog actually started as a dessert and recipe blog back in 2009. From there as my interests changed, my blog evolved thus inspiring me to start my business and build it into what it is now. But really what's most important is that my blog gave me a voice and an audience, which I think was huge for booking those first few weddings. Will creating a blog today book your 2013 season full of weddings? Maybe. Maybe not. But creating a blog is free, which means blogging as an extension to your business is truly a resource you can afford to take advantage of. Blogging will always remain a huge part of my business model and one that I continually attribute my successes to. {NAME YOUR BUSINESS} And think of something that works for YOU. One of the big decisions new wedding planners have to make is whether to name their business after themselves (i.e. Bridget Donohue Events) or to give their business a name like my own, Hey Gorgeous Events. Believe me it took me a good ten months to finally feel like Hey Gorgeous Events could be the perfect fit for my business now and my business in ten years. Hey Gorgeous is a business name that to me, epitomizes the flirty, fun and unique side of my work while allowing me to feel like at the end of the day, my personal name and identity is separate from my business. Rhiannon Nicole Events just didn't feel right where for many people self named companies will be a better fit. Whatever you pick it has to represent YOU and your business. And it has to make you happy. {BUILD YOUR BRAND} Branding is everything. Truly. But this doesn’t necessarily mean you need to invest in the branding works when you’re just starting out because that’s a huge financial investment (and a risky one too if you decide wedding planning really isn’t for you six months down the road :) The good news is you can brand yourself in other ways. For example if you’re into romantic, Jose Villa inspired weddings (think feminine, soft, beautiful) then your blog, logo and the things you pin, blog, share and aspire to do, should relate back to the above mentioned. Similarly, if you love tattoos, bright colors, out of the box ideas and sparkle, then a pastel-hued Rifle Paper Co. inspired logo may not be the most authentic way to attract clients. Consistency is key and shows potential clients you know what you’re doing. Be consistent from the get-go in all that you do and it’s easy to build a successful and thriving business.

{BE RESPONSIBLE} Register your business, attend business workshops, learn about taxes, and hire an office assistant if staying organized is not your strength. A lot of creative-minded people struggle with the end of their business that has nothing to do with creating (which is why so many wedding related vendors start their businesses to begin with!) But I cannot stress how important it is to be credible and legal. Buy that ten dollar domain name for your website, register for that LLC, build your business plan, meet with a financial advisor, invest in business cards; all of these things sound incredibly tedious and boring, believe me I know. I was the girl who picked a major in college that had absolutely nothing to do with numbers. But in the end if you're responsible you'll feel more confident about your business and your clients will feel equally confident in you too. {BE AUTHENTIC} This is a big one in the wedding planning realm and rings especially true for wedding stylists. It's so easy to quickly assume you should plan vintage-chic weddings adorned with burlap buntings and mason jars because that's what seems to be sticking around trend-wise in the industry. And let me just say that if that's authentically YOUR style and YOUR thing, then that's wonderful. But if bohemian beach weddings are your specialty and the last thing you'd describe yourself as is girly, then rock that out! If you have a knack for ballroom weddings dripping in crystals and calla lilies, then run with it. Staying authentic can be hard when you start out because you'll want to feel like fitting in and playing it safe. But more than anything, being authentic will make you more attractive to your ideal client while allowing your peers and industry colleagues to respect and admire your professionalism and talent. {BUILD YOUR PORTFOLIO} It's tricky to build a portfolio for wedding planning services when wedding planning is more of a service than a visual or tangible good (obviously this is a bit different for wedding stylists/designers.) I get that and was in that exact position two years ago trying to figure out what to do next to show people what I could do. It's frowned upon to use your own wedding photos as part of your portfolio but if you were a monumental part of making your wedding day be what it was, I say it's your work and it's a visual representation of your planning abilities and creative thinking, so use them. If you're against using your own wedding photos or perhaps you're not married, start networking with other vendors to see how you can help. Assist other planners with day of duties, attend workshops, conceptualize editorial shoots and build a reputation for yourself and your brand that shows nothing but hard work and positivity. Eventually you'll land a client who believes in your abilities and from there you'll continue to build your business much like any business owner did when they too first started out. Hard work is essential. {LISTEN TO YOUR GUT} Wedding planning seems to be an incredibly alluring and glamorous gig to aspiring planners. Who then leave their first event with blistered feet and a pounding headache only to feel completely blindsided by the 18 hour-long day of non-stop hustle and bustle. If wedding planning isn't all you'd thought it would be it's OK to move on. I fully believe that working in the wedding industry means you need to 110% love your client's weddings as much as they do. And if you come out of your first 18-hour day, craving your next rodeo then hats off to you, sister. You may have found your calling.
