It’s over to you this month - the choice is yours to decide which of the many winter events you’ll be scheduling in the ‘must see’ calendar of sights and sounds this July. Perhaps you’ll be rugged up in awe of Slava’s Snowstorm and the magic and mystery that has made this an internationally critically acclaimed ‘must be seen to be believed’ show for the whole family. Every month Melbourne turns up the heat on arts, culture and entertainment and July is no exception. Take a peek inside Melbourne’s most notable buildings both old and new at this year’s Open House Melbourne. The popularity of this event and the list of buildings open on display continue to increase making it an annual highlight for lovers of architecture, design and sticky-beaking! The Melbourne International Film Festival returns with a great program of local and international film viewing as does the Russian Resurrection Film Festival for that added touch of arts and culture. It’s school holiday time and although it can be tough and expensive keeping the momentum of continuous entertainment up we have listed some of our favourite places to go. I strongly suggest taking the family down to Docklands these holidays,

there is so much on for all ages and staying on to take in the Friday Night Fireworks is just one of the spectacular highlights. One of the great things about being a privately owned publication is that we have the ability to evolve and create what we feel our readers want. In addition, having supportive publishers that trust the team and let us run free with ideas and the direction of the magazine also gives us the flexibility to listen to and act upon what you tell us you want to see more of, or perhaps less of in each issue. Recently our team exchanged ideas about new sections we could incorporate or build on but with so many creative ideas on the table, I thought it was a good opportunity to hear what you, the reader would actually like to see in future issues. SPOTLIGHT ON SWANSTON STREET

REDEVELOPMENT AWARD A light bulb the size of a fish oil tablet that lasts up to 12 years has helped the City of Melbourne claim a major international design award for its Swanston Street redevelopment.

Council claimed an Australian International Design Award for innovative and contemporary fixtures purpose-built for the $25.6 million Swanston Street upgrade, including the world-first use of tiny plasma bulbs in street lights. The lights also won an IES Victoria/ Tasmania Award of Excellence. City of Melbourne director of Urban Design Professor Rob Adams said the small, energy efficient plasma bulbs have a 12-year lifespan and allowed for a unique and modern, slim design. The ‘Luminaire’ street lights and contemporary stainless steel street furniture were chosen to give Melbourne’s main thoroughfare a modern, pedestrian-friendly feel. “When you take a congested thoroughfare and try to turn it into a boulevard for public transport and pedestrians, high-quality design and attention to detail is crucial. What we have with Swanston Street is a number of elements that convey the care and respect we have shown in the redevelopment of one of our

most important streets. I am incredibly proud that our team’s industrial design and vision for Swanston Street has been recognised at such a high level.” Professor Adams said. Meanwhile, the City of Melbourne’s commitment to climate change adaptation has won it a United Nations Association of Australia award at the World Environment Day Awards. The City of Melbourne was awarded the prize for Best Specific Environmental Initiative for Local Government in Australia for leadership in adapting to climate change by delivering a suite of green infrastructure programs. Chair of the Environment portfolio, Councillor Arron Wood, said: “The City of Melbourne has invested $30 million over the past three years in a range of projects aimed at ensuring Melbourne is ready to meet the demands of a changing climate. These projects include stormwater harvesting, expansion of open space, doubling the tree canopy to reduce city temperatures, introducing permeable paving and water sensitive urban design.”

JOB OPPORTUNITIES TO DOUBLE AT DOCKLANDS

Planning Minister Matthew Guy has approved a 23 storey office tower at 1000 Latrobe Street, Docklands, bringing the number of office towers approved by the Minister to nine, with capacity to accommodate a total of 30,000 additional workers in the precinct. According to ABS figures, there were 30,000 jobs in the Docklands in 2011. These office tower approvals will double the employment capacity to 60,000 jobs. “1000 Latrobe will stimulate continued growth in the Docklands commercial centre and will deliver substantial flow-on benefits to the Victorian economy through new construction activity and new jobs,” Mr Guy said. The announcement of the $110 million investment reinforces Docklands standing as Victoria’s prime location for commercial investment. The new development will create an additional 60,000 square metres of office space in the Docklands, with 471 car parking spaces and 110 bike spaces. The 93 metre office building has ground floor retail space and above-ground multi-level car parking.

The building will provide high quality office and retail space, confirming Docklands as Melbourne’s 24 hour central activities district.

FIREWORKS AT DOCKLANDS EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT IN JULY! Friday nights at Docklands is the place to be this July, as the 2013 Docklands Fireworks light up the evening sky with a spectacular fireworks display, music and entertainment in celebration of winter in Melbourne. The entertainment program begins from 6:15pm at the Piazza and along NewQuay’s waterfront boardwalk with the fireworks display synchronised to a sound track starting at 7pm launched from pontoons on the water.

This is a fantastic event for all and a great way to start your weekend off with a bang every Friday in July and with a bit of luck, perhaps even August too! Grab a bite to eat before or after the show at one of the fantastic restaurants located in NewQuay and Central Pier for a breathtaking view of Victoria Harbour lit up in all its winter glory. Every Friday night in July from 6:15pm, Fireworks commence at 7pm for 10 minutes, festivities conclude at 7:45pm

THE HIDDEN WONDERS OF OUR GREAT CITY

BY CELESTE VAN WESSEM This year Open House Melbourne will be held on the weekend of the 27 and 28 July. The annual not-for-profit event gives visitors access to buildings and spaces that they cannot normally enter. This includes historically significant buildings and spaces like La Trobe’s Cottage and Parliament House, as well as more modern landmarks such as Rod Laver Arena and Federation Square. When the event started in Melbourne five years ago only eight buildings were open, this year visitors will have the opportunity to visit the largest ever collection of buildings, with 111 open for viewing across the city. Passionate volunteers will keep visitors informed with insights in to the history and significance of the buildings. Peter Maddison, architect at Maddison Architects, host of Grand Designs Australia and ambassador for Open House Melbourne spoke with 3000 Melbourne Magazine about this great architectural event.

How long have you been involved with Open House Melbourne? Open House began in Melbourne five years ago; I’ve been involved for the past three years. I got such a buzz the first year I was involved and have been happily involved since.

Why is this such an important event for Melbourne?

Well really it's an important event for the world. It originally began in London but has since taken place in Barcelona and Tokyo and now Australian cities, including Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne. The event showcases buildings, landscapes and other hidden infrastructure. It opens up hidden infrastructure you wouldn't usually see. It connects the city to the people and allows them to appreciate what we've got, and understand our city.

What are some of the spaces open to the public for the first time this year?

For the first time, Mac.Robertson Girls High School which has some great midcentury architecture will be open, as will the police training centre at the corner of Punt Road and Domain interchange, and the Hawthorn Tram Depot which will be a great one for tram enthusiasts.

What is your favourite building in Melbourne? There are so many! One of my favourites is Eureka Tower; I actually designed the top two floors. The building’s façade is very symbolic for Victorians, the gold of the tower symbolizes the gold rush, the red strip symbolizes the blood from the Eureka stockade and the grid pattern gives reference to our city design. I love the complexity of this building. Another fascinating building is the Treasury Building, designed by JJ Clark at the age of nineteen. In the basement the public can see where the gold was stored and where the caretaker lived, the area is actually still set-up in this way.

Why should Melburnians get along to the event? This is the public’s chance to celebrate the city. There is a wonderful spirit in the city on this cold weekend, Melbourne comes together and immerses in the spirit. You can explore so many fascinating spaces, the Arts Centre, power substation, St Kilda vault, Mission to Seafarers place of worship and you can even explore beneath Federation Square. The event is all about the city, gardens and architecture; and I urge Melburnians to get involved with the buildings and spaces you walk past every day.

The world premiere of Ballet Revolución began in Australia back in 2011, where has the show been since and is it exciting to be bringing it back to Melbourne this July? It premiered in Perth in 2011. Since then it has gone on to tour the globe, throughout Europe and successfully ran twice in London.

With breathtaking twists, daring jumps and sensual moves from ballet to street dance, Ballet Revolución has already impressed audiences in sold-out shows across the globe and now they return to Melbourne to turn up the heat this winter in a display of dance mastery and sizzling athletic dance.

We have received tremendous support and appreciation from around the world who love what we are doing. We will definitely be taking Ballet Revolución back to London. It’s a great feeling to be coming back to Australia; I’ve been walking around rehearsals with a big smile on my face in anticipation.

With a song book ranging from Beyonce to Bob Marley, Ballet Revolución is guaranteed to make you feel the heat this winter. It was a pleasure to find out more from Australian Producer, Mark Brady.

How would you describe Ballet Revolución and why it is a must see for people that missed the show last time in Melbourne?

As Producer and Creator of Ballet Revolución, how did this fusion of dance and music begin? The company began some 13 years ago and has been producing a variety of Cuban music shows over the past decade. Ballet Revolución was a logical progression of where to take the company.

The Cuban infused adrenaline that pumps through this show is exhilarating. The passion and dedication that comes with every movement is amazing. Every show holds the audience captivated until the final note. This show exudes the essence of Cuban passion, they live and breathe dance and to experience it first hand to incredible.

The performers are among the best classical and contemporary dancers in the world, is it difficult to produce such a high energy show merging different dance disciplines to Latin American music and today’s chart topping hits? Yes, producing anything of this high value is always difficult. Logistically the show is a challenge but it’s been worth it. The Cuban dancers have always had the talent to deliver a breathtaking performance and creatively we have been blessed with incredible talent among the company. Ballet Revolución is just one of your international smash hit shows which include The Merchants of Bollywood, Kings of Salsa as well as Spirit of Ireland, where did your deep passion for cultural dance originate from? I can’t really pinpoint where it originated, for me it’s always been there. My family has been in this business for years, I’m the third generation to find a career in show business, so I suppose it could be in my bones. Do you have a particular highlight in the show? The Mambo number in the first act is absolutely mesmerising!

As the sixth instalment of Underbelly hits our television screens, exposing the exploits of Joseph Theodore Leslie Taylor, also known as “Squizzy” the National Trust of Victoria presents Underbelly: Squizzy Exhibition at Old Melbourne Gaol opening this July and running through until September. As one of Melbourne’s first celebrity gangsters, Squizzy lived a bizarre and surreal life that captivated the Australian public during the 20th century and has now been brought to life in this fascinating exhibition.

Uncover the story of this gritty underworld figure through a series of customised Squizzy cells that unveil the many loves, friendships and enemies that shaped his life and unending quest for power. The exhibition will feature police records, images and newspaper reports from Squizzy’s reign, combined with original costumes and footage from the latest in the Underbelly franchise Underbelly: Squizzy which will premiere on the Nine Network. As part of the National Trust Victoria’s Underbelly: Squizzy Exhibition, the Old Melbourne Gaol will be transformed into a 1920’s ‘Speakeasy Bar’ for one night only on Thursday 18 July and will take guests on a journey sampling prohibition style cocktails made by the creative team behind Trink Tank and Bar Americano. Swing Patrol will perform numbers to the characteristic jazz tunes of the time. Underbelly: Squizzy Exhibition is open daily 9.30am – 5.00pm from 1 July to 1 September. MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

MELBOURNE FILM FESTIVAL BY CELESTE VAN WESSEM This year’s Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) will open on 25 July and Artistic Director at MIFF, Michelle Carey said that this year audiences can expect the unexpected. Carey said “[at the 2013 festival] we have over 300 films to choose from, from over 50 countries. We have amazing documentaries, films straight from Cannes, great new shorts from all around the world, rock docs and brand new Australian films.” The festival will open this year with the Australian Premiere of Pedro Almodovar’s new comedy I’m So Excited! Carey said the film was chosen because “MIFF always kicks off with something joyous and energetic, and this film was such a fun ride. It will get you in the mood for a party afterwards!” The film which has cameos by Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, tells the story of a Mexico-bound flight that encounters difficulties with its landing gear. The cabin crew is forced to deal with the situation using highly unusual means.

But this isn’t the only film that audiences should be looking out for this year, there is a vast array of films to choose from, including Italian, Australian and even South Korean cinema. Audiences also have the opportunity to attend movie retrospectives and discussion sessions.

Australian cinema will be making its mark on the festival, with films including These Final Hours, In Bob We Trust and a recent remake of the Australian horror film Patrick. The film adaptation of Tim Winton’s best-selling novel, The Turning will have its world premiere at the festival. The film is a highly anticipated feature of the festival and captures the creative talents of Cate Blanchett, David Wenham and Rob Connolly. The Turning showcases seventeen interconnecting stories about the everyday struggles and successes of residents in the town of Angelus, Western Australia. By Tom Elliott One of the reasons I really love doing talkback radio is that, unsurprisingly, I really enjoy talking to people. I like the sharing of views, the occasionally robust bit of debate and the opportunity to interview the movers and shakers in society. I also enjoy the fact that radio is immediate and live – except when I hear fellow announcers say something very stupid, which makes me think “There but for the grace of God go I...”

Several weeks ago Eddie McGuire experienced his now infamous brain snap on Triple M when he linked Swans star Adam Goodes with the King Kong stage show here in Melbourne. I know that Eddie is no racist, which makes his utterance hard to comprehend. What is even more surprising, however, is that neither Eddie’s co-host, Luke Darcy, nor his producer (a former 3AW colleague called Jay Mueller) thought to hit what we in the industry call the ‘Dump Button’ in the seconds after the remark was made. It is a little know fact that live talkback radio is not actually live; in fact, thanks to the wonders of modern technology we broadcast between seven and ten seconds in delay. What this means is that if a caller, guest or host says something they shouldn’t have, anyone in or just

outside the studio can have the offending remark removed from transmission. Had Eddie or one of his colleagues pressed the Dump Button a few weeks ago, then Mr McGuire would not have found himself the subsequent guest of one of the AFL’s notorious re-education camps. Even less comprehensible than Eddie McGuire’s on-air slip up, however, was Perth radio stalwart Howard Sattler’s more recent line of questioning to the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard. For reasons best known to himself, Howard used his programme on talkback station 6PR (part of the Fairfax Radio Network of which 3AW is also a member) to question the sexuality of the First Bloke, Tim Mathieson. And even though the PM did her best to fend off the remark as perhaps the result of an announcer’s

brain befuddled by the early hour, Howard decided to press ahead with what to him seemed an important issue. Howard’s now off the air, and the PM will probably never again make herself available to 6PR’s listeners. The moral of these stories, to me at least, is this: At its best, talkback radio is amusing, interesting, controversial and immediate; at its worst, however, the same format is stupid, venal, insulting and equally immediate. I hope to learn from Eddie and Howard and keep my show firmly in the former category. SHAREMARKET FOCUS: BIG MINERS LIKENED TO BIG BANKS… BY ANDREW HEWISON

Recent trends have seen big miners change their emphasis from re-investment and infrastructure spending, to profit retention and share-holder dividends.

Woodside Petroleum recently announced an increase in their dividend payout ratio from 50% to 80% and they expect this ratio adjustment to continue for some years ahead. In making this announcement WPL announced a special dividend payment to shareholders of 63 cents per share or the addition of around 1.8% on their share price. This would take WPL’s current dividend return to 4.8% fully franked – looks just like a bank share dividend.

Historically, a big portion of the large profits generated by large mining companies have been reinvested into additional exploration, other mining assets and infrastructure; hence their comparatively low shareholder dividends. We have seen mammoth spending by BHP, Rio Tinto and Woodside Petroleum over recent years which is expected to pay off with higher production

With the recent sale of its Pinto Valley copper mining operation in Arizona

for $630 million, BHP has offloaded peripheral assets to the value of around $US5 billion since last August. This is not a forced sell-off of non-performing assets, it is a planned sell-off of noncore holdings for which BHP has negotiated favourable prices. It is very likely that we will also see BHP increase its payout ratios to shareholders. Rio Tinto is doing plenty of housework in the wake of previous CEO Tom Albanese’s investment “spending spree” and is also selling off non-core assets including the historic Argyle diamond mine. Rio also expects to raise around $5 billion from asset sales and according to new

Alternatively, Australia’s big four banks have always focused on shareholder return, opting for payout ratios of closer to 70-80%, making them extremely attractive to value investors and retirees. Historically they have averaged gross dividend returns of around 6% and during the recent global downturn the returns ballooned to 10%+. That’s income, not growth! Could this be the beginning of a new era for our big miners, changing from pure cyclical growth assets to long term income and growth assets, similar to a bank? It looks very likely to me. I try to do my homework before an interview but the more I tried to research the show the more confused and intrigued I became. Is this is a show you need to see to comprehend? I know it seems like some conspiracy out there to not explain the show or to keep it a mystery but it’s not that at all. It’s like trying to explain a poem; some things just need to be seen to be experienced. This is theatre so it is about the experience of being an audience member – it’s hard to explain an experience.

Clearly the show is a magical and visual experience for audiences, how is the show formatted, is there a series of acts that tie in together and is there dialogue? There is no dialogue and that’s one of the reasons why we have continual shows around the world because it works for any language. It certainly is a series of parts that run together but it is a

journey. You are watching the Yellow Clown go through his journey, so it’s not a bunch of skits, there is a definite emotional through-line that makes you feel you are part of the journey. Who is the yellow clown and why is it singled out? The Yellow Clown was created by Slava Polunin and I think in some respects there is a simpleness and youthfulness that we all have within, similar to a child. There are lots of different children in the world but there is a similarity amongst all children, and we have all known that at some time. I think the audience connects with the Yellow Clown because of that familiarity. You have enjoyed an illustrious career spanning both hemispheres in theatre, music, directing as well as your own television show, how have you found travelling internationally as part of a large scale production? Travelling with a big international show is great as you are meeting and connecting with a whole new group of people every night. For me to perform in a show like this all over the world is invigorating. Of course moving from city to city presents its challenges but it’s how you address those challenges and utilise the opportunities that are there for you. Melbourne has some of the best coffee in the world, including Italy –it’s just fantastic! You have worldclass restaurants and being from Toronto I find a lot of similarities between Melbourne and Toronto. Slava Poluvin has been referred to as the best clown in the world and yet

he describes you as the best clown in your native Canada, is that the ultimate reference in the world of clowning? For me it’s nice to have the respect of people I respect. I greatly respect Slava, I think he has invented a new genre in the clowning world, so to have his respect is an honour. It’s not about being the best, I don’t think you can say Rembrandt or Picasso were the best, but certainly to be respected by your peers is the greatest accolade. I read a beautiful quote about the show, “what comes from the heart goes to the heart” is that the philosophy behind the show? It’s even more than that, Slava has a remarkable ability to bring together

I feel a shift. It is a shift towards a focus on school marks and scores. When did we become so focused on the marks our children get at school and not enough on a score of enjoyment and passion? Only recently, someone told me about the low grade her daughter got in her year six exams. Out of about five subjects, she got two low grades. Not bad, in my opinion. Guess which marks became the focus of the family dinner table discussion? What do marks really say about a child anyway? That they are good, great,

average or not so great in one area of study? Why have we not given our children a mark on how respectful they are, the essence of being nice and kind, or even the ability to show compassion and love? It is always summed up in report cards as “…but she is a lovely kind and beautiful girl.” Thanks for that. Where’s the report card that shows emotional qualities and achievements? I want my children to grow up knowing that I don’t care what mark they get. If they are kind, generous, compassionate people and show respect to others, my job is done.

As long as they are doing their best for the majority of their schooling years, enjoying the most part of their days and building solid foundations for their future, what more can I ask? I feel we are focusing a little too much on these school grades and overall year twelve final assessment marks. They have relevance; I know, but seriously, enough with this sole focus on academic schooling and resulting grades. There is so much more we should be “assessing” and rewarding… isn’t there?

TO MAKE:

INGREDIENTS:

To make the truffle infused potatoes, combine all the ingredients with thinly sliced and layered potatoes into a baking dish. Top with your crumbled cheddar cheese, cover and then bake in a pre-heated oven at 180 degrees C for 45 mins or until tender. Let it cool down before you portion them out into 4 separate display rings.

SIGNATURE CUT: 4 portions beef fillets 300g (‘Monte Gold’ is our own brand – grain fed for 130 days and aged, however, a quality cut from a boutique butcher will give you a great result) 6 vine ripened cherry tomatoes halved Pinch of sea salt flakes and cracked pepper To glaze, melted butter TRUFFLE INFUSED POTATO GRATIN: 400g peeled potatoes 80g pickled onion Cheddar cheese (topping) 1 peeled brown onion 90ml cooking cream Drizzle truffle infused oil 35g diced butter CREAMED SPINACH: 60g frozen spinach 30g fresh baby spinach 60ml fresh full cream milk 25g plain flour Pinch sea salt flakes and cracked pepper 20ml chicken stock 15g butter Drizzle olive oil To garnish, chives

You will need to make a simple roux with the butter and flour adding in the additional remaining ingredients as well as the spinach finally.

For the creamed spinach you need to defrost the frozen spinach and blanch in hot water for a few minutes. Drain, chop and keep this to one side. Blanch the fresh spinach for a few minutes also and drain, chop and rest aside.

Simply season and cook your fillets on a hot char-grill, cook to desired temperature and rest on a plate for 5 minutes before placing back on the grill, brushing both sides with melted butter. On the side, you can grill your halved cherry tomatoes for a few minutes on each side. Combine all three dishes as pictured. IN CONVERSATION WITH BRAXTON MILES By Jane M Hutchinson There was Braxton and Richard, checking in their luggage. Somehow between Braxton’s apartment and arriving at the airport, Braxton managed to book flights to Las Vegas for the two of them. The five minute packing meant there was no chance of excess baggage with their luggage. “This is crazy. I love it!” said Richard. Full of gusto, Braxton laughed and said, “I know, this is living, this is life!” Through customs and on to the plane, they got settled in for the long haul to Las Vegas. Richard pulled out his brown leather note pad. It is the one thing that is always with him. “So where are you at with the book?” asked Braxton. “Yeah, getting there, we still need to cover a bit of ground.” “I would have thought the last few months would have given you a bit

What with the funeral saga and the interview!” The tone of Braxton’s voice indicated that his mood was shifting from the heightened excitement state that he’d been in the past few days to the reflective and deeply private persona that very few knew. Looking out the little window watching the ground fall away beneath the might and force of the plane, the rawness of Braxton’s emotions and the past few months began to rise in Braxton. “Richard, how do think Zara is? What do you think she’s doing?” “She’ll be good, she’s always good. Zara is the sort of girl who always keeps it together.” “You’re right. She’s an amazing women, so strong.” Saying those words cut into Braxton. He loved her strength and courage. He knew in his heart that is exactly what he was lacking, the courage and conviction to face his own fears. His soul was drawn to her in ways that not even he understood. He knew he fed off her energy and now, coming down off his high, he wanted, needed his Zara fix.

“I need to get in touch with her, I need to see her.” said Braxton. “Do you think that’s a good idea? For both of you.” Richard knew, he’d been there, he’d seen the aftermath, the impact it had on Zara seeing Braxton again. For the next fourteen hours neither Braxton nor Richard said much. There was a stillness and comfortable element of silence between the two of them. The flight gave Richard the opportunity to get down on paper the events and his reflections of Braxton’s antics over the past few months. It was then that Richard realised just what an impact Braxton and Braxton’s life had on him. He was so drained and exhausted. He knew the moment they got to Vegas the roller coaster would be off again and this time Richard wouldn’t be living vicariously but he’d actually bought a ticket to go on the roller coaster with Braxton. Why? Richard wondered, as it was so out of character for him. Richard made this note as something he’d revisit later.

Zara had made her way back to Melbourne, back to her home that she loved. Zara had settled back into life, work, friends and her Melbourne life. But there were memories everywhere of her and Braxton. She’d changed her routines and no longer visited her favorite haunts as these were all high risk zones for the possibility of crossing paths with Braxton, her love and her addiction that she knew she needed to break free from. If people like it, they’ll pledge an amount to support your project. If they don’t, you don’t get the cash. Now you can wipe for change by using their 100% recycled toilet paper where they directly donate 50% of their profits to WaterAid to build toilets and improve sanitation in the developing world.
