UNIVERSITY OF IOWA

IOWA CITY AREA Iowa City is consistently voted one of the best places to live in the U.S. by everyone from the Outside Magazine to the American Institute for Economic Research–and with good reason. It’s a community that takes pride in openness, inclusion, and safety. It’s a place where everyone’s welcome. But it’s also a cultural hub, a gathering place for artists of every medium, the home of some of America’s most inventive minds, and so much more. Iowa City is one of just 20 UNESCO Cities of Literature in the world, and the only one in the U.S, establishing it as an international destination for creative thinkers. That energy fills the streets, creating a vibrant place that we love to call home. Iowa City’s vibrant downtown is just across the street from the heart of campus – where something big is happening every night of the week. You will find the opportunities and energy you’d expect from a larger city in a place that’s casual, lively, and safe.

WHY IOWA? “

I chose Iowa because of its excellent reputation in athletics and academics. I also knew I would have supportive coaches and teammates who would help me with my transition across the world. “ ISABELLA BROWN - Merirale, New Zealand

“ I could just see myself enjoying my time studying, training and riding my moped around town on my way between classes and the gym. I am very excited to become a Hawkeye, and immerse myself in the Hawkeye culture, and meet as many people as I can while playing my favorite sport. I’m excited to play with a great bunch of girls, and make the most of my four years abroad.” MADELEINE MURPHY - Riana, Tasmanian

“ I chose Iowa for one simple reason – I fell in love with it when I was in fifth grade and as I got older it became my dream school. As I looked at other colleges, nothing could compare to the way I felt when I was in Iowa City. There is a very special feeling I get when I’m there – it’s home! CHANDLER ACKERS - Pennsylvania

“ I chose Iowa because when I visited I felt it was exactly the type of school I wanted to go to. Iowa has both strong academics and athletics. I was really excited to be a part of the Big Ten Conference and the Iowa field hockey program.” NATALIE CAFONE - NEW JERSEY

THE FACILITIES Grant Field, the home of Iowa Field Hockey, is named in honor of former University of Iowa Women’s Athletic Director and Title IX advocate, Dr. Christine Grant. The original Grant Field was dedicated on September 22nd, 1991. When the facility moved to the West campus it was re-dedicated on October, 8th 2006. Grant Field is one of the finest facilities in the nation with a state-of-the art playing system, water system, lights, video replay system, permeant grandstand, concessions, restrooms, and press box. The Hawkeyes home attendance record is currently set at 1,339 fans who watched No. 4 Iowa defeat No.1 Penn State, 4-0. Iowa has gone undefeated on Grant Field in six separate seasons, including a 40-game home winning streak. Whether playing on the new Grant Field, or on the original facility that was introduced in 1989, opponents usually leave Iowa City unhappy.

INDOOR TURF The Field Hockey team members have access to the Indoor Iowa Hawkeye Turf Facility, an indoor replica of Grant Field. The facility provides the opportunity for athletes to practice all-year round and in inclement weather.

LOCKER ROOM The team locker room provides every athlete with their own individual locker with lock box and shoe storage. The room also houses cable TV and a sound system. Athletes are also provided a laundry service to clean their workout gear.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

Strength and conditioning coach Ashley Renteria provides year-round comprehensive, field hockey-specific training programs for each member of the Hawkeyes. Each program focuses on many components including: strength, aerobic and anaerobic endurance, flexibility, coordination, speed, agility and power. Coach Renteria also consults with both the nutrition and sports medicine staff to develop the individual strength and conditioning programs. This cohesive relationship ensures that field hockey studentathletes have every opportunity to maximize their performance potential.

ATHLETIC TRAINING

The mission of the Department of Sports Medicine and Field Hockey Athletic Trainer Jon Fravel is to provide the “Gold Standard” of health care for Division I student-athletes. The “Gold Standard” would be exemplified by having NCAA, Olympic and National Sports teams look to Iowa as one of the best for prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of the elite athlete. Jon manages all daily athletic training room operations, including: staff, clerical and student assignments; injury management and rehabilitation; and ensuring medical coverage for all Iowa field hockey student-athletes.

SPORTS NUTRITION

Director of Sports Nutrition Nicole White is responsible for the development and coordination of optimal nutritional services at Iowa and for the nutritional development and care of student-athletes. IOWA FIELD HOCKEY

ACADEMIC SERVICES

Doug communicates regularly with students-athletes and meets weekly with all new studentathletes and designated upperclassmen. In addition to Academic Coordinators, studentathletes are assigned a university advisor in the student’s designated degree program. Academic Coordinators consult with both students and university advisors to develop and maintain updated 4- Semester Plans of Study and help facilitate a student’s progression toward a degree program. Students must meet with their university advisor once per semester. Student Athletes have access to one of the finest academic centers in the country. The Gerdin Athletic Learning Center (GALC) provides student-athletes with a place to study and utilize academic resources such as tutors and computing facilities. The 28,000 square foot building also includes office spaces, computer and study labs on the first and second floor as well as a refuelling station.
