THE GOOD. I was the stage manager for a PBS special donor event, where I got to coordinate and direct the actors throughout the night.

Do set specific goals to accomplish by the end.

Do expect to be treated professionally.

Do take advantage of opportunities to have experiences beyond the regular scope of the internship that lead to chances to learn more about the company or industry.

Do ask questions. A lot of them. They don’t expect you to know everything.

Do network—with people in your department and others in the office.

Do go beyond what is asked of you.

Do find side projects to work on if you have spare time.

R

Do ask around the office to see if anyone else needs anything if your supervisor is busy.

Do have fun.

DON’Ts. Q

Don’t be afraid to make a mistake. It’s how we learn.

Don’t be late.

Q Don’t leave without checking in to make sure all of the work for the day is done. Q

Don’t take any experience for granted, even if it seems trivial at the time.

Don’t sit and twiddle your thumbs. There is always work to be done, even if you create it for yourself.

Don’t forget your notebook and pen. These should go everywhere with you.

Q Don’t waste anyone’s time. Q Don’t commit to more than you can handle. Q

Don’t think any work is beneath you. Learn from everything you do.

WHY. You have to start somewhere. You can explore what you want to do, and discover what you don’t want to do. You get inside knowledge of the agency or company. You need mentors—people who have been in the business and can advise you in your career. You may discover a different career path. You learn the value of a good work ethic. You are viewed as more marketable to potential employers. You will gain invaluable experience.
