THE IMPACT OF YOUR GIFT WILL BE FELT FOR GENERATIONS TO COME What will it take to create meaningful change in women’s health? That’s the question that we at the Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation (MWRIF) ask ourselves every day, though it takes many forms: What will tip the scales from illness to wellness? From hope to certainty? From vision to reality? What will transform an unborn baby diagnosed with spina bifida to a toddler who runs to greet the doctor who helped her? How can a drug that protects people from HIV infection be repurposed into a nasal spray that stops COVID-19? How do we find a way to prevent premature birth? Or complications from surgery?

Your support is an expression of faith in what we do, and in what we hope to achieve.

The answer, of course, is science. In the words of one of our investigators, “it’s how we win.” But science doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It happens because of the generosity of people like you: foundations. Corporations. Small business owners. Patients and families of patients who feel most directly the impact of our work. People who, for whatever reason, recognize the value and importance of focusing on women’s health. No matter what the source or the amount of the donation, your partnership is the reason these discoveries happen. Your support is an expression of faith in what we do, and in what we hope to achieve.

Throughout the following pages, you will see the tangible results of that support, both in numbers and in the stories of what those numbers represent. As was the case with all organizations, COVID-19 brought its share of challenges. But the bigger challenge remains the same: inequity in women’s health creates questions that we need to answer. So the science doesn’t stop, and neither do we. We have shifted to embrace digital campaigns, virtual events and a greater presence on social media. We created our Support Report, a monthly email communication designed to keep our donors updated on their gifts. We’ve found new ways to connect with you, and these efforts are paying off: online giving is up nearly 60 percent since the start of the pandemic, allowing us to support projects and unrestricted research in ways that weren’t possible before. Even so, we continue to strive to gain more ground. We are passionate about women’s health, and we thank you for sharing that passion. There is so much more science to create, so much more we can do. I hope your interest in the life changing work of our research and clinicians continues, whether your involvement is just beginning or has continued for many years. You are a crucial part of the change we seek to be in the world. Your voice, and your support, are integral to our work, and we are so grateful. Warmly,

TO OUR MAGEE FAMILY, As we bring 2021 to a close and look toward 2022, I hope this year’s Impact Report finds you safe and well. Over the last two years, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown us how science can serve as a beacon of hope throughout the world. We deeply value your support during an ever-changing year. Your commitment to scientific research has been critically important. Science is hope, but at Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation (MWRIF) we know that translating scientific discovery into tangible, improved outcomes for women and their families is paramount. The speed with which vaccines were developed inspired us — now we need to work to distribute them to the people who need them most, here at home and around the globe.

Over the last two years, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown us how science can serve as a beacon of hope throughout the world.

We understand, too, that while vaccines have allowed us to return to many parts of our lives, the pandemic’s particular impact on women remains. From job loss caused because of economic instability to leaving the workforce to serve as caregivers for children or parents, women weathered significant financial burdens over the last two years. We recognize that women’s health is more than the research we do at Magee-Womens Research Institute — it reflects how our society supports women in times of crisis. In that regard, we can do so much better.

Our Magee-Womens Summit, which was held this November, tackled head-on the need to address women’s health not only from research and clinical perspectives, but to approach it across economic, social, and educational positions as well. We will be talking much more about this in coming months, and we look forward to sharing key conversations with you. Our ongoing partnerships with foundations, corporations and individual donors throughout the pandemic has contributed to our longevity and helped us find new ways to support our mission. This report celebrates these partnerships. From MWRI’s expansion into Erie to seed grant funding for breast cancer research provided by A Glimmer of Hope Foundation — from campaigns launched by Coffee Tree Roasters and the relentless, continued support of partners like Women Who Rock and Savor Pittsburgh, over the last year we’ve strengthened current relationships and welcomed new ones. On behalf of our staff, clinicians, and researchers, thank you for your financial contributions and ongoing support. Your investment improves women’s health worldwide, and it’s been a privilege to thank many of you in person over the last several months — I look forward to meeting many more of you in 2022. A deep commitment to scientific research is our way of life at MWRIF. We know that the work coming from the research institute will result in breakthroughs for women’s health — and we look forward to sharing them all with you. We truly believe that through improving women’s health, we improve the health of families, neighborhoods, and communities. You are a large part of that mission, and we are grateful. Yours,

Philanthropy, Grants Drive Development of Nasal Spray to Fight COVID-19 Nearly two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, as the world continues to adjust to the impact of the virus on nearly every aspect of people’s lives, infectious disease experts from Magee-Womens Research Institute are partnering on a solution to help protect the vulnerable. The Pittsburgh group, led by Lisa Cencia Rohan, PhD — an MWRI investigator and professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy — is working with colleagues at the University of Louisville on a nasal spray designed to provide broad-spectrum protection against COVID-19. The spray’s active ingredient is Q-Griffithsin, an anti-viral drug initially developed in a different formulation to prevent HIV infection. In addition to HIV, the drug appears to be effective against a wide variety of coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. It binds to the virus and renders it unable to infect nearby cells. Lin Wang, a doctoral candidate and research manager in Rohan’s lab, formulated Q-Griffithsin into a nasal spray intended to attack the virus at its first point of entry into the body, the nose and mouth.

“We have a mission of transforming women’s health through innovative pharmaceutical interventions.” — DR. LISA ROHAN

Support from the Richard King Mellon Foundation helped with some of the initial development work as well as safety evaluations, which are a critical precursor to in-human use. In late 2020, the U.S. Department of Defense also awarded the project an $8.5 million grant. The team hopes to begin human clinical trials for the nasal spray in 2022 in Pittsburgh with funding from the National Cancer Institute; trials are under way in Louisville thanks to the Department of Defense. Rohan said her collaborator at the University of Louisville, Kenneth Palmer, PhD, has demonstrated its effectiveness against a number of SARS-CoV-2 variants, including delta.

The nasal spray is not meant to replace COVID-19 vaccines, Dr. Rohan noted. But it can help vulnerable people who are unable to create adequate antibody responses to vaccines, such as transplant patients, some cancer patients or others who are significantly immunosuppressed. Additionally, the spray could help protect people in parts of the world without access to the vaccine. “We have a mission of transforming women’s health through innovative pharmaceutical interventions,” Dr. Rohan said. Philanthropic funding is key to translating a chemical into a new drug that can save or improve millions of lives, she added. “The support and funding has impacted not only the lives of women in our communities, but globally,” she said. “Without their help and support, we would not be positioned to advance this product that has the potential to significantly impact the pandemic.”

Diagnosis, Planning Play Key Roles in Potentially Life-Threatening Birth To see Tina Owens-Schmidt jogging just a couple of months after delivering her second baby, you might never know she faced a serious complication beginning in her second trimester. In fact, had she delivered 10 years ago, her condition might have resulted in a drastically different outcome. But thanks to advances in diagnostics and careful planning on the part of her obstetrical team, both she and her baby are healthy — a credit to the research that preceded her pregnancy, as well as the clinical care it informs.

At her 20-week ultrasound appointment, Tina was diagnosed with placenta previa, meaning the placenta was lying very low in her uterus, covering all or part of the cervix. The condition is relatively common, occurring in about 1 in 200 pregnancies. At 34 weeks, her team noticed not only the previa, but also lacunae, or lakes, in the placenta — a possible indicator for a more serious condition known as placenta accreta. Occurring in about 1 in every 1,000 to 2,000 pregnancies, placenta accreta occurs when the placenta grows too deeply into the wall of the uterus. Instead of separating from the uterus after birth, the placenta becomes a source of uncontrolled bleeding. “It’s a big deal. It’s life-threatening,” said Stephen Emery, MD, who works both as a clinician at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital and a researcher with Magee-Womens Research Institute. “The right diagnosis really matters — because if you overcall it, you do an unnecessary hysterectomy. And if you undercall it, the patient can lose a lot of blood fast.”

“I feel very positive about my experience. I don’t think the outcome could have been better.” — Tina Owens-Schmidt

In Tina’s case, at 35 weeks, she met with her MaternalFetal Medicine team at the hospital to discuss plans for her delivery. Though her diagnosis was not definitive, the team prepared as though she did have accreta, planning to deliver her by cesarean section and remove her uterus if necessary. At 46, Tina was not planning additional pregnancies, so she agreed that a hysterectomy was the best option.

Such deliveries require a lot of multidisciplinary planning, notes Arun Jeyabalan, MD, who adds that UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is a referral center for accreta cases. Dr. Jeyabalan said the team is always trying to improve its procedures, coordination and planning; Dr. Emery notes that additional research could improve both procedures and diagnosis, which is crucial. Magee-Womens Research Institute collects data and specimens from placenta accreta spectrum disorders through the Steve N. Caritis Magee Obstetric Maternal & Infant Database and Biobank, which is available to researchers who are interested in the topic. On June 21, 2021, Tina went in for the scheduled delivery of her daughter, Elaina Jane. The team saw the accreta and immediately put Tina under general anesthesia, then performed the hysterectomy as planned. Both procedures were a success. Eight weeks after delivery, she was making plans for additional exercise. “I feel very positive about my experience. I don’t think the outcome could have been better,” she said. “I needed the people who were prepared to be in that room, so their plan worked.”

“It’s Not a Miracle, It’s Science:” Prenatal Surgery Allows Baby With Spina Bifida to Walk In the second trimester of Allee Mullen’s pregnancy, she and her husband learned what no prospective parent wants to hear: something was wrong with the baby. The diagnosis, at 21 weeks, was spina bifada — a birth defect in which the spine and spinal cord don’t form properly, resulting in a range of potential complications, including the inability to walk.

until after birth. After the research was published, Dr. Emery and other clinicians trained in the procedure, then waited for the right patient to come along to put it into practice. At the time Allee was selected, nobody else in Pittsburgh had undergone the surgery, which requires patients to meet several qualifying criteria. Some patients who qualified expressed concern about being first. But Allee, who cared for critically ill children as part of her job, knew how high the stakes were for her baby.

After meeting with a “Allee was willing to be genetic counselor, Allee first,” said Dr. Emery, who and her husband, Kevin, credits the Mullens for spoke with Stephen their bravery in setting Emery, MD, a fetal a precedent: “Someone medicine specialist has to be first, and then with Magee-Womens other people will follow.” Research Institute (MWRI). He suggested Though there were no there might be hope guarantees, the surgery in a new corrective would give their baby a surgery that could be better chance at walking Allee and Emery Mullens with Dr. Emery at the performed on the baby independently and 15th annual Noah Angelici Memorial Golf Event in utero, rather than avoiding hydrocephalus, waiting until after birth. The Mullens met another potential complication. with pediatric neurosurgeon Stephanie Greene from UPMC Children’s Hospital After much deliberation, in her 25th of Pittsburgh, who teamed up with Dr. week of pregnancy, Allee became the Emery for the surgery. first expectant mother in Pittsburgh to undergo the surgery. Two months later, “They seemed very confident in the way on Feb. 26, 2019, the Mullens’ baby things were going to go,” said Allee, daughter was born, kicking and pulling who worked as a nurse in the hospital’s up her feet. They named her Emery pediatric intensive care unit. Greene Mullen. Prenatal surgery to correct spina bifida was a controversial intervention, says Dr. Emery, until research funded by the National Institutes of Health demonstrated that it gave babies a better chance for success than waiting

“There was no better way to thank them or to honor them than by naming Emery after both of them,” Allee said of her surgical team.

“We are forever thankful for everything they have done for us, and for the quality of life we’ve been able to give Emery,” — Alee Mullen

But it wasn’t until 19 months later that the family felt the true impact of the surgery. Allee and Kevin were in their kitchen where Emery and her older sister, Anistyn, were playing. Suddenly, the girls ran into the family room — both of them. Tears of happiness rolled down their mother’s face. “She definitely is a very determined and stubborn little girl. It had to be on her terms,” Allee said. “She runs and skips and walks and plays … If you looked at her, you would never even know.” In the summer of 2021, the Mullens surprised Dr. Emery when he spoke at the 15th annual Noah Angelici Memorial Golf Event at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania. The event raises funds for MWRI. As Dr. Emery told a gathered audience her story, he spotted Allee at the back of the room and invited her to join him. His little namesake toddled out with her mother to greet him, pigtails bouncing.

It was the first time he had ever seen Emery walk in person, the result of a leap of faith her parents took with him and Dr. Greene two years prior. Together, both doctor and mother choked up with emotion as the audience gave them a standing ovation. “We are forever thankful for everything they have done for us, and for the quality of life we’ve been able to give Emery,” Allee said. “This is an example of what science does. This is science. This is medicine,” Dr. Emery said. When people hear him tell Emery’s story, they commonly remark on what a miracle it is that she can walk. But Dr. Emery respectfully disagrees. “It’s not a miracle; it’s science,” he said. “Science is how we defeat disease and improve people’s lives.”

Philanthropic Funding Expands Study Exploring Cognitive Decline After Surgery Over the last three years, Mary Ackenbom, MD, a clinical investigator with MageeWomens Research Institute (MWRI), has studied whether a link exists between pelvic floor surgeries and cognitive decline in older patients. Her research stems from clinical cases in which family members reported patients were not as mentally sharp since their surgeries. Last year, she was able to extend this research study to MWRI in Erie, an exciting development for recruitment and a new opportunity for patients in the area. Among them was Marie Phillips, a former licensed practical nurse who underwent surgery to correct a prolapsed bladder. When the team presented the opportunity for the cognition study, Phillips eagerly agreed. “I live alone, and it can be challenging to remember at my age. The study really prodded my memory and I like knowing I helped with clinical research,” she said.

“We want to understand what’s happening to women over time, and what role surgery plays verses what role the anesthesia contributes.” – MARY ACKENBOM, MD

“We want to understand what’s happening to women over time, and what role surgery plays verses what role the anesthesia contributes,” said Dr. Ackenbom. “We are also studying the role inflammation might play — both in the blood and in the brain. We think inflammation might be associated with other sorts of cognitive decline, and we want to know everything we can about what’s happening to these women post-surgery.” Recently, Dr. Ackenbom received funding from the Tamara L. Harris Foundation to expand her study and look at impact of minor urogynecologic surgeries on cognition and everyday functioning

“We know that anesthesia and the surgical experience can potentially have an effect on memory,” Dr. Ackenbom said. “Ultimately, our patients are undergoing elective surgeries, so it’s really important that we understand what could happen postoperatively, counsel our patients about this possible outcome, and learn how we can best intervene.”

Early in the fall of 2019, the Erie Community Foundation (ECF) announced a $6 million grant to expand Magee-Womens Research Institute (MWRI) to Erie, Pennsylvania. The grant was the largest made in ECF’s history, and it marked the first time MWRI expanded outside of Pittsburgh. “The Erie community rallied to bring women’s health research here in a really unprecedented way,” said Linda Paterniti, director of operations for MWRI in Erie. “The ECF’s grant served as the impetus to make this expansion a reality. With additional support from Hamot Health Foundation (HHF), UPMC, Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation (MWRIF) and Penn State-Behrend, the initiative was able to come alive.”

“The Erie community rallied to bring women’s health research here in a really unprecedented way.”

From the creation of a new biomedical commercialization and translational research lab at Penn State-Behrend’s Knowledge Park to bringing locally focused clinical medical research trials to the region, the expansion will improve the health of women while creating a new employment sector in Erie’s economy.

“Each of the project’s strong champions has committed multiple millions of dollars to make our region’s dreams become reality — including new jobs in our downtown, increased flow of —Linda Paterniti federal dollars and improved women’s health,” said ECF president Michael Batchelor. “In 2018, we announced a five-year, $30 million grantmaking and community leadership framework to help transform our region. This collaborative checked all the right boxes, and we look forward to future significant investments in the coming years.” More than a decade has passed since Robert Edwards, MD, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital led by example and initiated a gynecologic oncology consultation service at the newly built Women’s Hospital of UPMC Hamot. “Dr. John Comerci and I started seeing gynecologic cancer patients through what was then Hamot hospital in 2011,” said Dr. Edwards. “We drove to Erie twice a month to start building an oncology presence there. We were immediately welcomed by the patients, particularly those who would have had to travel for care otherwise.” Their early success encouraged hospital leaders to address other gaps in women’s health subspecialty care. By 2013, experts in urogynecology, reproductive endocrinology and high-risk pregnancy care joined Drs. Edwards and Comerci. Their success was followed by the establishment of a UPP generalists group.

“By 2016, through adding a combination of generalists, and specialists, we had a very fleshed out group of physicians seeing and treating patients in Erie,” said Dr. Edwards. This critical mass of faculty set the stage for bringing MWRI to Erie. “The Erie community really understands the importance of women’s health research,” said Michael Annichine, MWRI’s CEO. “We have active, vocal supporters with a strong vision for Erie’s future and their engagement has been critical to our success.” Despite a year of pandemic associated challenges, Paterniti and Halina Zyczynski, MD, MWRI in Erie’s medical director, have met most of their timelines. After several tours throughout the building, the group found “ideal” space on the main floor of the Women’s Hospital for the Clinical and Translational Research Center (CTRC) and within Labor and Delivery for the Obstetric Specimen Procurement Unit (OSPU). “Being adjacent to clinical care space is a huge advantage in that it fosters collaboration between clinical and research staff and makes it easier for women to attend both clinical and research visits,” said Dr. Zyczynski. In March, the CTRC opened its doors to investigators and study participants. The state-of-the-art tele-research room enables local research staff and trial

participants to engage in study visits with Pittsburgh investigators. The tele-research room addresses the digital, transportation and financial barriers that have previously limited Erie-area women from access to novel therapies and studies aimed at improving scientific understanding of women’s health. The team has launched six clinical trials and introduced the Steve N. Caritis MOMI Biobank and Database. These protocols were extensions of Oakland-based studies, a process which has become very easy with inclusion of UPMC Hamot in the University of Pittsburgh Institutional Review Board applications. According to Dr. Zyczynski, in addition to the community’s demographics, the partnership provides MWRI researchers access to a population with distinct environmental exposures—those of the nearby agricultural sector and Lake Erie. Erie research operations are poised to aid investigators in their study of rural health disparities, a key initiative of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. Families hold deep roots in Erie. Generational stability provides investigators access to grandmothers, mothers and daughters for epigenetic and genomic studies. The expansion of MWRI into Erie is still in its formative phase, but with such a strong foundation, everyone agrees that the original vision of a robust, diverse research community, supported by national grants and industry partnerships, is coming to fruition.

Women’s Health Research Gets Boost as Events Return to In-Person From hitting the golf links to casting their fishing rods to reuniting with nurses and doctors, supporters of Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation (MWRIF) turned out in enthusiastic numbers to benefit women’s health research. Whether virtual or in person, participants in MWRIF events raised more than $239,000 during fiscal year 2021, despite the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, they stayed engaged in the mission of creating better science — and, by extension, better health outcomes — for women and their families.

“Participation from our supporters is crucial to our mission.” — Denise Wickline

“Participation from our supporters is crucial to our mission,” said Denise Wickline, MWRIF’s events manager. “Not only does it raise much-needed funds for our research, it also enhances our sense of community and purpose by bringing our scientists and clinicians together with the people their work benefits.”

With the availability of the COVID-19 vaccine in early 2021, events began to pick up steam with in-person participation in fiscal year 2022, including the inaugural Race to Beat Women’s Cancers 5K Run/Walk and Savor Pittsburgh in September, followed by the Women Who Rock concert in October. Full details will appear in next year’s Impact Report.

“The opportunity to meet with the people who have so generously donated their time and resources to our efforts is one of the most rewarding aspects of our work,” said Janice Devine, executive director of development. “We look forward to finding new ways to connect with our supporters, both new and existing, and continuing to identify new opportunities to push the envelope in women’s health research.” FISCAL YEAR 2021 EVENT HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDED: The NICU Family Reunion: Held annually at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, 450 families who have benefited from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) shared refreshments, entertainment, crafts and raffles and reconnected with NICU nurses and physicians who cared for them. The reunion was hosted by UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, Magee’s Parent Advisory Council and UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Guests were greeted by Tom Diacovo, MD, chief of the UPMC Newborn Medicine Program at both hospitals. The 14th Annual Noah Angelici Memorial Golf Event: Located at the luxurious Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania, this event included a round of golf for 144 people at one of the region’s finest courses as well as lunch, dinner for 200 guests and prizes. Guest speaker Stephen Emery, MD, shared the story of a groundbreaking surgery on an unborn baby with spina bifida that allowed her to walk unassisted (see related story on page 10). Proceeds benefited the Center for Advanced Fetal Intervention. The WCRC Fly Fishing Classic: Held at the HomeWaters Club in Spruce Creek, Pennsylvania, this annual event benefits the Women’s Cancer Research Center (WCRC), developed in 2010 as a unique collaboration between the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and MWRI. The WCRC’s mission is to reduce incidence and death from women’s cancers. The Pars for Postpartum Depression Golf Outing: This event was founded to bring awareness and resources to support parents who experience the effects of clinical depression, which affects women about twice as often as men. In addition to great golf at Birdsfoot Golf Club, participants enjoyed a delicious lunch, hole-in-one prize and raffles. Third Party Fundraisers: More than 20 community members partnered with MWRIF to raise a total of $109,000. Among them were Smail Auto, which raised $15,000 for MWRIF during its Smail Auto Cares campaign. This partnership has yielded $277,000 over the past nine years. Additionally, craft beer brewer Mike Fahy donated $11,000 for the sale of his “With You Always” coffee milk stout, created in honor of his late wife, Darcel. The beer has raised more than $30,000 in the past two years.

$1 Million Gift To Fund Prematurity Research Throughout her life, Terri Bone made a dedicated effort to advocate for women, whether it was promoting their professional interests, making flexible work arrangements possible, or counseling them about their careers. So when she and her husband, Tom, decided to give $1 million to Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation (MWRIF), she viewed the gift as a natural progression of her support for a cause she has always championed. “In this organization, women don’t have to take a back seat and don’t have to wait for men to decide that they’re capable. And we are getting results,” says Terri, who has served on MWRIF’s Board of Directors since 2012. She is particularly proud of the fact that more than 50 percent of the research institute’s scientists are women, and more than 50 percent of its research funding are obtained by senior women scientists. But she also points out that the male scientists who work at MWRIF also are dedicated to improving outcomes for women and their children. Having worked hard all their lives, Terri and Tom wanted to make their gift to a place where they knew it would make a difference. “I have confidence that this is a good place to put money to both enable results and enable women to be empowered to get those results,” Terri explains.

A PERSONAL CONNECTION The donation will help fund continued prematurity research in UPMC MageeWomens Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), a cause that is personal to the Bones. Two of their three children — their daughter and younger son — spent time in the NICU after being born prematurely. But it wasn’t until several years later that Terri realized that both she and her grandmother were also preemies — a pattern that hasn’t really been explored. “Women don’t talk about childbirth. And women don’t talk about what they’ve had to overcome. They’re just happy that everything turned out OK,” Terri says. “We, as women, don’t prioritize understanding our own health and our circumstances. We always prioritize the caregiving.” She and Tom are hoping their donation will help to change that. In addition to Terri’s role on the MWRIF board, she is also the vice president of finance for The 25 Club, which supports newborn medicine, neonatal research, and fetal interventions at Magee. Nearly 1 in 10 babies are born prematurely each year in the United States. Those born before 37 weeks can be susceptible to long-term health problems over their entire lives. In about half of the prematurity cases, the cause is not known.

“I have confidence that this is a good place to put money to both enable results and enable women to be empowered to get those results.” — Terri Bone

The best approach to reducing prematurity is prevention, according to Yoel Sadovsky, MD, executive director of Magee-Womens Research Institute (MWRI). “Nearly a third of premature babies are born early when their birth is induced by health care providers for medical indications, such as preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction and diseases of the placenta,” Sadovsky said. “All of these conditions are targets of MWRI research, with the goal of markedly reducing the incidence of prematurity.” Dr. Sadovsky also notes the need for better research exploring major complications of preterm newborns, including respiratory distress, brain hemorrhage, gut perforations and severe infections.

A WAY TO GIVE BACK For much of Terri’s career — first at Ernst & Young, and later at EQT, where she retired as vice president of finance, corporate controller and chief accounting officer — she often was the only woman in the room. So she worked diligently to remove obstacles for other women, encouraging them to try for promotions and obtain graduate degrees. Today, she is an executive in residence specializing in accounting at the University of Pittsburgh. She views the gift as a way to give back not only to women she has never met, but also to her family. “Over the years when I was working, there was a lot of time when I wasn’t with my kids, when I wasn’t with my family, when I missed events or couldn’t visit,” she says. “Something like this allows me to take that time I spent earning that money and translate it into a different kind of love for my family … The ability to make a real difference in the health of people, it’s very exciting.”

Determined to Make a Difference:

A Glimmer of Hope Seed Funding Leads to $3 Million Grant for Breast Cancer Research “Only research will cure breast cancer. I have great hope in research,” said Diana Napper. As the founder and president of A Glimmer of Hope Foundation (GOH), Napper has dedicated the last 25 years to fighting breast cancer. Her organization has raised money to support cancer research, patient support programs and research studies in premenopausal breast cancer throughout Western Pennsylvania. Napper began her mission in 1994 to honor the wishes of her best friend, Carol Jo Weiss Friedman, who passed away from breast cancer in 1990. Originally a promise to fund a hospice in Carol Jo’s name, Napper realized her mission was bigger than she initially thought — she wanted to support breast cancer patients and their families as well as contribute to scientific research. “At A Glimmer of Hope Foundation, we acknowledge how much anxiety is tied up in a breast cancer diagnosis. We are committed to funding initiatives that provide immediate comfort and support, while also supporting longer-term research projects,” said Napper. Recently, GOH’s support of liquid biopsy research at Magee-Womens Research Institute and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center led to a $3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for Adrian Lee, PhD, professor of pharmacology and chemical biology, University of Pittsburgh; The Pittsburgh Foundation Chair in “It’s an investment that we Precision Medicine; director of the Institute believe is ultimately going of Precision Medicine and Steffi Oesterreich, PhD, to lead to a transformative professor of pharmacology and chemical biology, University of Pittsburgh; The Shear Family Foundation understanding of our of Breast Cancer Research; co-director of Women’s breast cancer knowledge.” Cancer Research Center, a collaboration between MWRI and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center; and co-leader of the — DR. ADRIAN LEE Cancer Biology Program at UPMC HCC. “A Glimmer of Hope Foundation supported an observational study that allowed us to collect blood from women with breast cancer every time their disease advanced,” explained Dr. Lee. “Our goal is twofold: we want to sequence the blood draws we’ve collected, and our collection to become a resource for researchers throughout the country.” According to Dr. Lee, the initial investment from GOH allowed researchers to build a unique resource that appealed to the NIH as well as other organizations. “It’s an investment that we believe is ultimately going to lead to a transformative understanding of our breast cancer knowledge,” said Lee. “You can’t overestimate the critical importance of seed grant funding like this.” “Research doesn’t move quickly most of the time, but I don’t find that discouraging,” said Napper. “Collectively, we can all work together to make a difference, and I don’t think there’s ever been more hope than there is now.”

Teen Raises Funds Through T-Shirt Design Sales, Honoring Mom’s Cancer Journey When Marina Gzikowski was growing up, she and her mother, Kristina, loved to talk about all the ways they’d celebrate her 16th birthday. They never dreamed how it would actually turn out. A few months earlier, in October 2020, Kristina was unexpectedly diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. “It was just really overwhelming,” recalled Kristina. “The doctor calls you on a Saturday morning; nobody wants to get that call. You’re probably not getting good news.” Worse, the COVID-19 pandemic meant that her considerable support system of family and friends had to stay mostly at arm’s length for safety reasons. That’s when Marina, a student at Upper St. Clair High School, came up with the idea for T-shirts that would give her mother the support that she so desperately needed. As part of a school community service project, Marina designed and produced hundreds of pink shirts honoring Kristina’s cancer battle and sold them through social media channels to raise money for Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation.

“The incredible support I got from her efforts made me feel so good inside. I already knew how much she loved me, but that just reaffirmed it.” — KRISTINA GZIKOWSKI

In total, the shirts raised $5,300 for the care of breast cancer patients. And today, after a year of chemotherapy and infusions as well as a mastectomy, Kristina’s surgeon found no evidence of cancer. “The incredible support I got from her efforts made me feel so good inside,” Kristina said. “I already knew how much she loved me, but that just reaffirmed it. My baby girl did that for me. It will forever stick with me that she did that for me.” For her part, Marina hopes the shirts will inspire other people to find ways to donate to breast cancer patients and offer their support. “If you know someone is going through cancer treatment, it will make them feel so much better. It will help them through it,” she said. “I hope they will know they are making a difference in people’s lives.”

From Customer to CEO: Coffee Tree Roasters’ Jean Swoope Embraces Philanthropic Support for Magee For Jean Swoope, the only constant in life is change. Over the last 3 1/2 years, she’s moved from a successful career in medical sales to assuming the president and chief executive officer positions with Coffee Tree Roasters, all while raising her two teenage children. The change in direction came after her husband died in the spring of 2018. Bill Swoope, along with his father, founded the Pittsburgh-based coffee business. In fact, Jean and Bill met at his Squirrel Hill location. When they had difficulty starting a family, they turned to the Center for Fertility and Reproductive Endocrinology at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital. “We were lucky: in vitro fertilization worked really well. We underwent the process two times, and we had two wonderfully healthy kids,” said Swoope. The next several years were dedicated to raising their children and growing their careers. It wasn’t until after Bill passed away unexpectedly and Jean began leading Coffee Tree Roasters that a new relationship with Magee began.

“I wouldn’t celebrate Mother’s Day if it weren’t for Magee. I’m so grateful to my team there.” — JEAN SWOOPE

The hospital was looking for a coffee provider for its cafeteria and Garden View Café. Swoope recognized an exciting business opportunity, as well as the chance to work with the hospital that made her a mom in the first place. “I wouldn’t celebrate Mother’s Day if it weren’t for Magee,” said Swoope. “I’m so grateful to my team there.”

Over the course of establishing a Coffee Tree Roasters location within the hospital, Swoope met Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation (MWRIF) partners and fundraisers. With them, she began discussing opportunities to give back. In October, Coffee Tree Roasters created a pink latte in recognition of breast cancer awareness month, with 25 cents from every sale donated to MWRIF. And in May 2021, they introduced two new roasts – Maui Mama and Mellow Mama – with all proceeds donated to MWRIF. “Partners like Coffee Tree Roasters who supported us through the pandemic with flexible, creative fundraisers made such a difference,” said Janice Devine, executive director of development for MWRIF. “They’ve helped us re-define fundraising, and we are so grateful for their support in a time of such uncertainty.”
