A WORD FROM OUR CEO Friends, As we bring 2019 to a close and welcome 2020, I would like to thank you for your dedication to Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation. We deeply value your support, which brings us closer every day to our vision of a better, healthier world in which women’s health has the scientific prominence and cultural status it deserves. Our partnerships with foundations, corporations and individual donors contribute to our longevity and help us pursue new opportunities in support of our mission. As the year ends, I am particularly proud to share the conclusion of our fundraising campaign, reaching our goal of $100 million. Five years ago, MWRI and its board of directors embarked on an ambitious campaign to change the world’s thinking about human health by establishing women’s health as the standard for which all consideration will proceed. UPMC made a commitment to match funds raised until the end of 2019, resulting in the $100 million that will exponentially increase our resources, leverage more government research dollars and increase revenue for research programs, endowments, major equipment

and national and global outreach to accelerate researcher recruitment and train upcoming young scientists. Also this year, thanks to a grant from the Erie Community Foundation, MWRI for the first time expanded outside of Pittsburgh. Together with cancer clinicians from UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, our researchers will work to identify potential new diseases where genetics may be a significant factor. This partnership will elevate the level of care for women in Erie, PA and it will build upon the reputation and clinical expertise we have brought to Erie through UPMC Magee and UPMC Hillman by adding research and clinical trials specific to the community. Our relationships with local foundations have also grown over the past year. From funding research dedicated to increasing our understanding of pregnancy health and infant mortality, to grants that will support our physical expansion here in Pittsburgh, local foundations are helping us grow and develop in extraordinary ways. Whether you are a family supporting our IVF and NICU services by attending our annual reunions, a foundation partnering with us to find solutions for maternal mortality, or an individual donating to help advance laboratory research, your investment is a commitment to improving women’s health here in Pittsburgh and around the world. MAGEE-WOMENS RESEARCH INSTITUTE AWARDS THE INAUGURAL MAGEE PRIZE In early October of 2018, the Magee-Womens Research Institute brought experts from around the world to Pittsburgh to discuss a wide variety of women’s health research initiatives. Part of the two day Summit was the awarding of the Magee Prize, established to attract transdisciplinary research teams that can catalyze discoveries to improve women’s health. MWRI’s Dr. Yaacov Barak, Dr. Myriam Hemberger with the University of Calgary and Dr. Henry Sucov with the Medical University of South Carolina received the prize, which will support their research investigating the link between defects in the placenta in utero and heart defects after birth.

SHARON HILLIER IS WOMEN WHO ROCK AWARDEE On May 30th, 2019, a phenomenal lineup of female musicians joined forces to turn up the volume on women’s health. Supporters rocked to the sounds of the legendary Sheila E., raising over $100,000 for women’s and infants’ health research at Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation. So how did MWRIF, the nation’s largest independent research institute dedicated solely to women’s health, come to be the beneficiary of Women who Rock’s annual concert? It was a match meant to be.

“Women are woefully underrepresented in the music industry,” said Melinda Colaizzi, founder of Women who Rock. “And after participating at an MWRIF benefit, I learned that women are underrepresented in health care research funding, too.” “The speakers that evening brought me back to my own mom, a cancer survivor, and all the women I know who have faced women’s health issues,” said Colaizzi. “Learning about the disparity in research dollars made me think: why not come together and rock the future of health care for all women?” The Women who Rock Award was presented to Sharon Hillier, Ph.D. Dr. Hillier, an internationally recognized microbiologist, was a natural choice for the award. Her work has influenced an entire field of research based on the intersection of women’s health and HIV prevention. Ensuring women and girls across the globe have agency and autonomy over their bodies has an impact that can transform women’s lives and health. Congratulations to Dr. Hillier.

RICHARD KING MELLON FOUNDATION AWARDS MWRI $5.1 MILLION TO FIGHT INFANT MORTALITY Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation received $5.1 million from the Richard King Mellon Foundation to fund Phase II of a research project designed to reduce infant mortality. The end goal of this grant is the creation of a tool allowing physicians to practically apply the most current infant mortality research on a patient-by-patient basis. Infant mortality, defined as death occurring within the first year of life, claimed the lives of 77 infants in Allegheny County in 2017 — a rate 5% higher than the national average according to the Center for Disease Control and Preventions’ WONDER online database of public health statistics. Additionally, racial disparities — or inequalities in mortality rates for minorities — are over 5 times higher for black infants than white infants in Allegheny County.

The group is dedicated to supporting research initiatives relevant to all aspects of women’s health through meaningful and purposeful philanthropic activities. Members of M-PWHR support MWRI through a combination of financial contributions, advocacy, recruitment and on-site engagement.

Individual fundraisers held on behalf of Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation can make a huge impact on laboratory research and patient care. In the spring of 2019, Will Ross ran the Nashville marathon and raised over $10,000 to support breast cancer patient care at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital. He ran in support of his mother Terry, a breast cancer survivor and Magee patient.
