Business manager, Angie Muir says Breens offers a complete house demolition and waste removal service, including the removal and disposal of asbestos contaminated waste and contaminated concrete and soil. “Contaminated waste removal has been a big thing since the earthquakes,” she says. “We offer a full service, having registered COC holders to manage the site under the strict guidelines, to ensure the waste is removed correctly and safely for staff and neighbouring properties.” Breens Contracting also disposes of contaminated soil from HAIL sites (Hazardous Activities Industries List). These sites were formerly horticultural or dump sites which have been identified years down the track. “When houses on these sites have been removed the land has to be investigated

to ascertain the levels of any possible contamination,” Angie says.
Breens Contracting’s new name
Ribraft foundations
Breens Contracting Limited has recently changed its name to better reflect its comprehensive range of site works.
Breens Contracting also specialises in ground remediation for new foundation work, including ribraft foundations, which are commonly used in Christchurch since the earthquakes. Ribraft is an innovative foundation system that makes it a seismically strong foundation. “Instead of a traditional 3604 ring foundation, the engineer designs the gravel raft to suit each property,” she says. “It requires the entire footprint and an overcut to be excavated to a particular depth, then back filled in layers of gravel and compacted. Quite often these rafts are reinforced with geo-grid to make them even stronger. In the event of an earthquake, the house would be supported by the gravel raft.”
Business manager Angie Muir says up until recently the company was known as Breens Demolition, which was appropriate for much of its post-earthquake works. However, the decision was made to change the name to Breens Contracting to show customers it offers a wide range of excavation and site services, as well as demolition. CT
