New York dans les années 70,Vince ouvre un bar en plein cœur de The Deuce, ces quelques rues de Manhattan fréquentées par les prostitués et leurs macs sous l’œil complaisant d’une police corrompue. L’ambition ici n’est rien moins que de raconter la naissance de l’industrie pornographique. En pleine période de hashtag #metoo et autre #balancetonporc, on pourrait se demander si une série qui montre comment ce monde interlope contribue à l’émergence du cinéma porno ne participe pas, même involontairement à la reproduction, voire à la glorification d’une image de la femme pour le moins dégradée. Mais en fait, pas du tout. The Deuce se révèle une série passionnante qui retrace une époque : le New York des années 70, un milieu : celui de la prostitution, certes, mais pas seulement. On est en pleine révolution culturelle et c’est aussi l’émergence de la communauté gay, de la façon la plus précise qui soit. La reconstitution se montre d’ailleurs bluffante. Malgré le sexe, la drogue, la violence, The Deuce ne tombe jamais dans le voyeurisme. Elle prend le temps d’explorer les motivations de chaque personnage, et les relations, toujours complexes, entre chacun d’entre eux. Ses créateurs, David Simon et Georges Pelecanos étaient notamment les scénaristes de The Wire, considérée par beaucoup

comme la meilleure série de tous les temps. Afin d’éviter la masculinisation du point de vue, ils ont fait appel à deux auteures renommées et ont confié la réalisation du pilote à une cinéaste talentueuse, Michelle MacLaren. Quant aux rôles principaux, ils ont été équitablement distribués, à Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Dark Knight) et à James Franco (Spiderman) que l’on retrouve aussi à la production. Alors que la saison 2 avait été confirmée par HBO, le doute s'est installé mi-janvier avec un James Franco dans la tourmente, accusé de harcèlement sexuel par plusieurs femmes. A suivre... n
In 1970s New York, Vince opens a bar in the middle of The Deuce, a couple of streets
in Manhattan frequented by prostitutes and their pimps ignored by the corrupt police. The ambition here is nothing less than telling the story of the beginnings of the pornography industry. In a time of the #metoo hashtag, we might wonder if a series that shows how this shady world contributed to the emergence of porn films participates, involuntarily reproduces or even glorifies the degrading image of women. But actually, it doesn’t at all. The Deuce turns out to be an enthralling series that tells the story of an era, New York in the ‘70s, and a world: that of prostitution, of course, but not only that. It’s a full cultural revolution as well as the emergence of the gay community, in the most precise manner possible. The representation itself is also quite impressive. In spite of the sex, drugs and violence, The

Deuce never resorts to voyeurism. It takes the time to explore the motivations of each character and the always complex relationships between each of them. The creators, David Simon and Georges Pelecanos, were also the scriptwriters of The Wire, considered by many as the best series of all time. In order to avoid an overly male-centric point of view, they called on two well-known female authors and handed the reins over for the pilot to talented filmmaker Michelle MacLaren. As for the main roles, they were distributed fairly to Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Dark Knight) and James Franco (Spiderman), who can also be found in the production team. Despite the former greenlight by HBO to a Season 2, the doubt has settled mid-January, with a James Franco in the turmoil of accusations of sexual harassement made against him by several women.
