Pompeya, catástrofe bajo el Vesubio La exposición plantea un discurso basado en una visión global de la vida en la ciudad antes, durante y después de la erupción que la enterró bajo las cenizas. Se trata de un recorrido iniciático mediante el cual el visitante puede redescubrir Pompeya y sus orígenes, experimentar la magnitud de la erupción devastadora que la sepultó en el año 79 d. C. y contemplar su resurgir a partir de las campañas arqueológicas promovidas por Carlos III. Para esta exposición han viajado al Centro de Exposiciones Arte Canal de Madrid más de 600 piezas procedentes de varios museos, principalmente, del Museo Arqueológico Nacional de Nápoles, el museo que más piezas atesora de
Analizar el papel de la pintura al aire libre como motor de la renovación plástica del siglo XIX es el objetivo principal de esta exposición. En general, tendemos a relacionar la pintura al aire libre con el impresionismo pero, cuando Monet, Renoir, Sisley o Pissarro empezaron a exponer sus obras en el estudio del fotógrafo Nadar, en 1874, la pintura en plein air llevaba ya casi un siglo de desarrollo. La muestra reunirá alrededor de 100 obras: desde los iniciadores del paisaje al aire libre, como PierreHenri de Valenciennes y Thomas Jones, a artistas como Turner, Constable, Corot, Rousseau, Courbet, Daubigny y todos los grandes maestros del impresionismo, hasta llegar a Van Gogh o Cézanne. IMpressionism and Open-air Painting From Corot to Van Gogh The principal aim of this exhibition is to offer an analysis of the practice of painting outdoors as a factor within the transformation and modernisation of 19thcentury art. In general, this practice is generally associated with Impressionism. In fact, although Monet, Renoir, Sisley and Pissarro first started to exhibit their works in the photographer Nadar’s studio in 1874, plein air painting had already existed for nearly a century. The exhibition will bring together around 100 works. It starts with work by some of the founders of plein air landscape painting such as Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes and Thomas Jones, and continues through the work of figures such as Turner, Constable, Corot, Rousseau, Courbet, Daubigny and all the great figures of Impressionism, concluding at Van Gogh and Cézanne.

This exhibition is an invitation to discover and explore. The exhibition is based on a global vision of life in the city before, during and after the eruption which buried the town under ash. This tour allows visitors to rediscover Pompeii and its origins, experience the magnitude of the devastating eruption which occurred in 79 AD and discover how the city came back to life through the archeological campaigns supported by King Charles of Bourbon. For the exhibition more than 600 pieces have been shipped to Madrid’s Arte Canal Exhibition Center from several museums, mainly from the Naples National Archaeological Museum, the center with the 8 largest amount of artifacts from Pompeii.

El legado de la Casa de Alba El patrimonio artístico y cultural que ha acumulado la Casa de Alba a través de los siglos desde su fundación en el siglo XV es enorme. Han llegado hasta nuestros días, innumerables obras de arte y documentos que han sobrevivido a los avatares de la historia de España. En esta exposición queremos dar a conocer, no sólo la excelsa colección de obras de arte de la Casa de Alba, sino también, resaltar la importante y complicada labor de creación, formación, recuperación, protección y mecenazgo llevado a cabo por esta Casa a lo largo de los siglos. Así mismo, destacar el servicio a la Corona y a España; la vinculación y apoyo a la sociedad civil y religiosa, a la educación y la cultura, por las distintas generaciones de la familia, que ha permitido crear un legado único y han convertido a la Casa de Alba en una referencia en España.
The Legacy of the House of Alba Madrid hosts the most complete show of works from the Casa de Alba Foundation’s private collection. The CentroCentro cultural center is showing a selection of over 150 works from the House of Alba collection. This exceptional catalog includes, among other gems, paintings by Goya, Titian, Renoir and Rubens; manuscripts by Christopher Columbus and a first edition of Don Quixote. This is the biggest ever exhibition of works owned by the House of Alba, one of the most prominent noble families in the political and cultural history of Spain. The show features a spectacular group of brilliant painters from the artistic legacy of the Palacio de Liria, the family’s landmark Madrid residence.

DOMINGOS EN MADRID SUNDAYS IN MADRID A pesar de lo que muchos puedan pensar, los domingos de Madrid están llenos de vida desde primera hora de la mañana. En el barrio de Embajadores comienza la actividad de “El Rastro”, un mercado al aire libre donde puede encontrar de todo. Es el mercado al aire libre más popular de Madrid y uno de los más antiguos, ya que sus orígenes se sitúan en el siglo XV. Situado en el entorno de la Ribera de Curtidores, es una cita ineludible para los domingos y festivos por la mañana. Estos días, más de 1.000 vendedores ambulantes ofrecen a los visitantes todo tipo de género: baratijas, ropa de segunda mano y ocasión, antigüedades, artesanía, libros y discos… Se crea un ambiente único de turistas y madrileños que aprovechan la visita para comprar y practicar la costumbre de “ir de tapas”. This is the most popular open air market in Madrid and one of the oldest, as its origins date from the 15th century. Located in the area around the Ribera de Curtidores street, it is an event not to be missed on Sunday mornings and public holidays, when over 1,000 stallholders and street sellers tempt visitors with a multitude of wares: trinkets, second-hand and reduced-price clothing, antiques, arts and crafts, books and discs… The market has a unique atmosphere and is a magnet for both tourists and locals who make the most of their visit by combining a little shopping followed by the customary drink and tapas. 11
domingos en madrid SUNDAYS IN MADRID El mercado engloba una amplia zona delimitada por las calles de Toledo, Embajadores y Ronda de Toledo en lo que se conoce como el barrio del Rastro. Uno de los recorridos más habituales a la hora de visitarlo es caminar desde la parte de arriba (la popular Plaza de Cascorro) hasta la de abajo (el Mercado de Puerta de Toledo). El visitante puede hacerse con antigüedades y con todo tipo de objetos curiosos (marionetas, tebeos de todas las épocas, radios y relojes antiguos, abanicos artesanales) y conocer “calles temáticas” como la de San Cayetano, llamada la de “los Pintores”, ya que sus locales poseen multitud de óleos, acuarelas o reproducciones de grandes obras de arte. Como mercado por excelencia de Madrid, no falta la mezcla de culturas junto a elementos típicos como los barquilleros o el organista que ambienta con música de chotis. El Rastro también es conocido por sus bares y tascas, donde lo más habitual es tomar unas cañas acompañadas por tapas. Es la hora de comer, pero no se vaya lejos. La Latina es uno de los barrios más castizos de la ciudad de Madrid. Se encuentra situado en el centro y sus calles, de origen medieval, giran en torno a las plazas de la Cebada y de la Paja.

El lugar es muy frecuentado por los propios madrileños debido a sus numerosos bares, pubs y tabernas tradicionales llenas de encanto en calles como Cava Baja, Cava Alta o las mismas plazas de la Cebada y la Paja. Aunque suele tener ambiente todo el tiempo, destacan los anocheceres y los fines de semana. Otro buen momento para visitar este barrio es durante la celebración de las fiestas de la Virgen de La Paloma. Tienen lugar en torno al 15 de agosto y son una de las celebraciones más castizas de Madrid. Durante las mismas, las calles se llenan de fiesta, se organiza una popular verbena y muchos madrileños se visten con sus trajes típicos (chulapos y chulapas). También son de interés en “La Latina” la Basílica de San Francisco el Grande o el parque de “Las Vistillas”, lugar muy recomendado para disfrutar de una puesta de sol con la Catedral de Santa María Real de la Almudena de fondo. El barrio actual se corresponde con lo que fue el primer recinto urbano de Madrid en la Edad Media y, aún hoy, se ven algunos vestigios de la muralla que lo rodeaba. En su día, fue una zona principalmente ocupada por artesanos y jornaleros. De este modo, tanto la Plaza de la Cebada como la Plaza de la Paja fueron importantes puntos para el mercado agrícola y del forraje respectivamente.
The market spreads over a broad area delimited by the streets of Toledo, Embajadores and Ronda de Toledo, in what is known as the Rastro quarter. One of the most habitual routes for visitors is to walk from the square at the top (the popular Plaza de Cascorro) down to the square at the bottom (Puerta de Toledo market). Shoppers can pick up antiques and a wide assortment of curiosities (puppets, comics from all eras, old radios and watches, handmade fans) and discover ‘themed streets’ such as San Cayetano –known as the ‘painters’ street’, as its shops and stalls display numerous oil paintings, watercolours and reproductions of great artworks. As Madrid’s most quintessential market, it naturally features a wide mixture of cultures and typical figures, including the wafer-sellers known as barquilleros, and street organists supplying a musical backdrop of the typical Madrid dance, the chotis. The Rastro area is also known for its bars and traditional taverns, where the usual custom is to enjoy a few beers accompanied by tapas. Is time eat but do not leave the district. La Latina is the place to be. This is one of the most genuinely authentic neighbourhoods in the city of Madrid. It is located in the centre, and its mediaeval streets are arranged around the squares of La Cebada and La Paja. The streets in this neighbourhood are an illustration of the most popular side of Madrid. This district is much frequented by Madrid locals thanks to its numerous bars, pubs and traditional taverns full of character in streets such as Cava Baja, Cava Alta and right in the squares of La Cebada and La Paja. Although it tends to be very lively all the time, the atmosphere is particularly animated in the evenings and at weekends.

Another good time to visit this neighbourhood is during the festivities in honour of the Virgin of La Paloma, which take place around 15 August and are some of the most authentic celebrations in Madrid. The streets are filled with cheerful high spirits, there is popular dancing for all, and many madrileños dress up as chulapos and chulapas in the typical regional costumes. Other sights of interest in the La Latina quarter are the basilica of San Francisco el Grande and the park of Las Vistillas, which is the ideal spot for watching the sunset against the backdrop of the cathedral of Santa María Real de la Almudena. This neighbourhood today is on the site of what was Madrid’s first urban walled enclosure in the Middle Ages, and even now some remains of the defensive wall which originally surrounded it can still be seen. In the past this area was mainly occupied by artisans and manual workers, and the squares of both the Plaza de la Cebada (‘barley square’) and the Plaza de la Paja (‘straw square’) were home to busy markets selling farm produce and fodder respectively.

There’s a different way to enjoy Madrid’s nightlife. Just head for the Chueca area, where all inhibitions have been cast aside to make way for fun and tolerance, and where you’ll find a whole host of wicked venues, techno discos and designer clubs. In fact this neighbourhood has always been a beacon of modernity, and was the birthplace of the famous “movida madrileña” (a countercultural movement of the 70s and 80s). And as well as being the favourite hangout of the gay and transsexual community, the streets in this area are becoming more and more popular with anyone looking for first-rate nightlife. In summer, it’s well worth visiting the outdoor terraces in the surroundings of the Plaza de Chueca square, where you’re always guaranteed to find a great atmosphere. And of course if you want to see for yourself everything that’s on offer in this most openly tolerant of cities, why not visit Madrid during Gay Pride Week (last week of June)? The event features open air concerts and shows, as well as a parade of floats and fancy dress, while the whole area is awash with rainbow flags. 48

SEMANA SANTA EN MaDRID HOLY WEEK IN MADRID Procesiones en Madrid En Semana Santa las delicadas imágenes, que durante el resto del año se hospedan en las distintas basílicas e iglesias, son adornadas con numerosos cirios, flores y ricos mantos bordados para salir en procesión por lugares tan representativas como el Paseo del Prado, la calle Alcalá o la Plaza Mayor. A lo largo de todo su recorrido van acompañadas de decenas de nazarenos y portadas por miembros de las distintas cofradías. En cuanto a las procesiones más importantes celebradas en Domingo de Ramos y Miércoles Santo, hay que destacar el paso del Cristo de la Fe y el Perdón, y el de de Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Salud, respectivamente. La primera sale de la Basílica Pontificia de San Miguel y la segunda está organizada por la Hermandad Nuestro Padre de la Salud y María Santísima de las Angustias –conocidos como los Gitanos-, y recorre las calles aledañas al Paseo del Prado y la Plaza de Neptuno. Por otro lado, las procesiones que se ofician durante el Triduo Pascual son las que más reconocimiento y adeptos tienen, ya que conmemoran la muerte de Cristo. Entre éstas son muy populares la de Nuestro Padre Jesús del Gran Poder y María Santísima de la Esperanza, y la de Jesús Nazareno y la Virgen de la Soledad, ambas en Jueves Santo, así

Gastronomía en Semana Santa Como suele ocurrir en cualquier celebración religiosa, la Semana Santa madrileña también se acompaña de la preparación de platos típicos, que en este caso están profundamente vinculados a los deberes religiosos, pero sobre todo a la tradición. Entre los platos más representativos de esta época encontramos las torrijas –plato dulce creado con pan humedecido en leche con canela, frito y espolvoreado con azúcar-, los Soldaditos de Pavía –trocitos de bacalao rebozados y crujientes-, potaje de garbanzos a la madrileña –puchero de esta legumbre acompañada de espinacas, bacalao, patatas y huevo duro- y las croquetas de bacalao.
Processions in Madrid During Holy Week, the delicate effigies that are kept in the various basilicas and churches throughout the rest of the year are adorned with numerous candles, flowers and elaborate embroidered cloaks. They are then brought out and carried in processions through landmark areas of the city such as Paseo del Prado, Calle de Alcalá and Plaza Mayor. Dozens of Nazarenes accompany the effigies, borne by the various brotherhoods, throughout. There are many processions held on Palm Sunday and Holy Wednesday, the most important being the Cristo de la Fe y el Perdón and Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Salud processions. The former starts out from the Basílica Pontificia de San Miguel. The latter, organised by the Nuestro Padre de la Salud y María Santísima de las Angustias brotherhood, also known as the Gitanos or Gypsies, parades through the streets surrounding Paseo del Prado and Plaza de Neptuno. The processions with the highest following, however, are those held during the three days prior to Easter Sunday, since they commemorate the death of Christ. Amongst the period’s most popular dishes are torrijas - a sweet made from bread that is washed in milk and cinnamon, and then fried and sprinkled with sugar. Crunchy, battered little pieces of cod named Soldaditos de Pavía, Madrid-style chickpea stew known as potaje de garbanzos a la madrileña, and cod croquettes or croquetas de bacalao are also highly popular during this time of year.
