Program Notes Excerpt to discover more, visit madisonsymphony.org/ miracle The “London” symphonies are the final, crowning glories of his long career as a symphonist. He seems to been inspired by large orchestras to create richlyscored works filled with orchestral color and novel effects. These symphonies also have a new harmonic subtlety and depth of development. – Michael Allsen

Our March concerts feature the debuts of Madison born conductor Kenneth Woods and Canadian violinist Blake Pouliot. Our program features three of the greatest German composers: Haydn, Mendelssohn, and Strauss. Dipping back into the classical period, the program opens with our first performances of Haydn’s Symphony No. 96, incorrectly subtitled as “The Miracle”, but a little miracle of its own, nevertheless. One of the great London symphonies of Haydn, these works were written for larger orchestras than Haydn was used to, and should be a great fit for our orchestra. I found the piece absolutely wonderful, and was delighted that Kenneth Woods wanted to do it. It is with great excitement that we anticipate the debut of virtuoso violinist, Blake Pouliot. This hound violinist has created a sensation in Canada and beyond, and his performance of the beloved Mendelssohn Violin Concerto should be thrilling, to say the least. There’s good reason the Mendelssohn concerto continues to be performed so often, as it is one of the great violin concertos of all time. It is both virtuosic and melodic and is perfectly written for the violin. Personally, if always makes me feel good when I either conduct it or listen to it.
