THE EDITOR’S DESK The start of the academic year brings a lot of changes in our lives . It’s important to pay attention to what’s going on with our educational system . The education which we provide our students now , will have a direct effect on our society in future . We , at Podar International (CIE) , Kalyan , believe in Education as a ‘ Movement from Darkness to Light ‘ , and we strive to penetrate that light in every child’s life. The activities and co curricular activities that school provides to ensure the success of the students will help to determine how well educated they are , what jobs they fill , how their social and mental health issues as children effect them adults and how involved they are in their communities beyond graduation . We drown in the gratification of pride when our students win laurels for our school . Keeping in mind our progress , We are fortunate once again, to launch our magazine which reflects the diversity , success and creativity of our students .

Director’s desk “For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort you, or excite you. They show us what community and friendship mean; they show us how to live and die.” ……………… Anne Lamott I am greatly pleased to bring out the 7th edition of our Bi-annual magazine “Harvest”. Principal’s Message “Your journey has moulded you for your greater good, and it was exactly what it needed to be…It took each and every situation you have encountered to bring you to the now. We continue our ascent towards success by asking more of ourselves today, tomorrow and forever. Holiday When there is a holiday, I sleep all day long. If you don’t like to sleep, you can go out to play. You can play cricket, football and dodge ball. You can also cycle but be careful of falling. You can also eat chocolate but don’t be late, If you arrive late, then your brother or sister will eat the chocolate. Run and go to your secret tent, and read the letter your friend has sent to you. If anyone stops you from playing, you can also think of that he is a man who hates to play. This holiday you can play, but you should enjoy everyday

I am good at bating whereas he is a good baller. Therefore we both enjoy very much. When we play football, parth does give goal. I kick the ball very hard but he mostly, saves the goal. Our families go to picnic together. We exchange story books. During exams we study together. I like my friend very much.

MY CAT One day, I was sleeping and I dreamt of a pet cat. When I opened my eyes, I saw a cat. I named her snowy and I play with her every evening. She comes home so that I can enjoy all the time with her. Sometimes she goes away but I pick her up and she says “meow meow meow”. She looks very cute when she meows and her voice is very low while she says meow… She is my favorite pet. I love her. She quickly sneaks into the house when we open the door for our guest or daddy. She has made a house for her out of a box. She loves her house and has become comfortable with it. I enjoy with her all the time and spend time with my pet cat snowy…

Three Little Pigs Once upon a time, there were three little pigs. One day they left their parents to see the world. All summer long, they had fun and made friends with everyone. The third little pig remembered the advice of his mother that they should work hard to have success in life. As winter approached, the three little pigs fell that they needed a house to shelter themselves from cold and also to protect themselves from big bad wolf. They discussed about what to do and each pig decided to build a house for himself. The first little pig, the laziest of the three, decides to build a nice little straw house. “As it will take only a day to build, I will not have to work too much!” he said. “Yes but it will not be strong enough!” said the second little pig, and added,’ I am going to build a house of wood!”. “ I will build my house of brick!” said the third little pig. “ I am afraid that neither the house of straw nor of the word are strong enough to keep the big bag wolf away.” Everyone still built the house as they wanted. After some days they heard the news about sly wolf. All the three pigs went to their respective houses to take shelter. The big wolf came. He was hungry and wanted to eat a delicious pig, “come out, I wanted to speak to you” roared the wolf to house of straw. “ I would rather stay where I am!” replied the first pig in a tiny voice. “ I will make you come out, whether you like it or not,” growled the wolf, and he blew with all his strength. The fragile little straw house was soon destroyed. The poor little pig had only one thing to do and that was to flee. Anshika singh Grade 2

Be yourself As spring setsin , the birds of panchinagar decided to have a get together party. Everyone wanted to look their best. After all, the best looking bird would be declared the king of birds at panchinagar. All birds began cleaning and tidying their feathers. They fanned their beautiful tails and decorating them with jewels. They spread out their wings wide to show off their beautiful feathers. Everyone look so happy except the sparrow felt sad seeing his small and dull feathers. How was he to complete with other birds and show off his feathers? He felt ashamed soon he made a plan. The sparrow quietly hopped around the birds. Nothing that everyone was busy beautifying their feathers, the sparrow started picking up beautiful feathers that fell from the tail of the birds. The sparrow then stuck them between his feathers. Soon it turned in rainbow colors feathers. He was now the brightest bird at panchinagar. Next day all the birds gathered at the party. As soon as the sparrow entered the hall. Nobody could recognize him. Everyone amazed to see such a beautiful rainbow feathers bird. Nothing this, the sparrow started fettering his beautiful wings in pride. The chief of the birds declared him to be the most beautiful bird in panchinagar. But no sooner did the sparrow start flapping his wings, then one by one all his feathers began falling down. All the birds started rolling into laughter. The sparrow burst into tears with shame. Seeing him cry , all the birds took pity hugged him lovingly. Moral: always be yourself and never pretend to be some else. Take pride in what you rather that changing yourself to what you are not. All of us gifted in some or other way. We must respect what we have and be thankful to god for it. Agamya Grade 3

Business Studies Entrepreneur is the word which we usually read in books, newspaper, articles and magazines, but do we really know what is entrepreneur? Entrepreneur is an individual who sets up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit. But in today’s world, our educational system is responsible for preparing young people to build successful lives. Along with teaching traditional subjects such as Science, English, Maths, so on… it’s imperative that we should teach students to be entrepreneurial. There are many who believe that entrepreneurship is an inborn trait that can’t be taught. This is not simply true. Education is, without a doubt, one of the most challenging areas we invest in as a foundation were schools are the unit of change in the effort to increase student achievement. As with all skills, from maths to music, learning to be entrepreneur builds upon inborn traits. Each baby learns to harness their noises to form words, connect words to compose sentences and combine sentences to craft stories. Entrepreneurship can be taught using a similar scaffolding of skills, building upon our natural ability to imagine- imagination, creativity, innovation, problem solving, opportunities, leadership and so on. Like the initiative taken by Bill and Melinda Gates have poured billions of dollars into efforts to shape U.S. K-12 education over the past 17 years. Carol Burnett has written beautiful line, “Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me”. Regards Bijal Yadav

“Economics is the study of how society manages its scarce resources Economics is a social science which deals with human wants and their satisfaction. It is mainly concerned with the way in which society chooses to employ its scarce resources which have alternative uses, for the production of goods for present and future consumption. Economics is concerned with human well-being as well as ethical values. It is science and an art, since the scientific principles are applied practically. It is both positive and normative science, since the actual happening and future happenings are dealt. Every science has its own language. Economics has its own language. There are certain terms which are used in a special sense in Economics. So we must understand the meaning of some basic concepts, like wealth, goods, income, value, price and market. If we do not understand their meaning properly, it may result in lot confusion. So we need to revise our economic thinking to give full value to our natural resources.

Wonder Why ? I have always wondered WHY? I am sure many kids like me have questions in our minds. Over past few days I have tried to find out answers for five WHY questions that I had. Just sharing it here for my friends. 1. Why is sky blue ? Answer-Air in sky has lots of dust and gases. Light from sun hits these tiny bits and scatters, during the day, blue light wave scatters best and it makes whole sky blue. 2. Why do we see a rainbow ? Answer-When it has just rained, there are billions of water droplets in sky. When sunlight hits these droplets, it shatters and we see all colours of light. Light is actually made of colours violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red which make colours of the rainbow. 3. Why does the wind blow? Answer-During the day, the sun heats our planet. Land heats faster than water as it a good conductor of heat. At night land also cools faster than the water and hence air above land is cooler than on water. Warm air is lighter than cool air and hence warm air moves up while cool air takes its place. This creates an air flow which we call wind. 4. Why does thunder come after lightening? Answer-Lightening and thunder actually happen at the same time. We see lightning before we hear thunder just because light travels much faster than sound. 5. Why do seeds grow up? Answer-When a seed sprouts, out pops a shot and a root. The shoot goes towards the warmth of the sun light while root is pulled downwards by gravity. It is the shoot which grows into branches and leaves and continue to grow upwards the light. Muskan Mrinal Braj Grade 3

PICNIC REPORT We visited Sanjay Gandhi National park as a part of recreational activity. It's the only protected forest to be located within the limits of a city. To enjoy nature amid concrete Mumbai, this is the place to come! The park is also a great family destination, with plenty to keep the kids amused. We left at around 7.00 a.m. from Kalyan and were there at the Park at about 9.30 a.m.The kids en route we managed to see a few deers, vultures(that were really far). The kids enjoyed the train ride in any case and loved passing through the mini tunnels. Soon after we drove to the Lion Safari .Such vast lands, we saw many all Lions, white tiger and Bengal Tigers. Teacher gave lot of information about flora and fauna. We then spread our picnic mats at a spot near the bus stop of the safari under an old Banyan tree and removed all our boxes of some nutritious food. Our visit was a memorable one as we watched the big cats at the ‘Tiger & Lion Safari’ from the safety and comfort of a closed vehicle. The expansive safari cages enabled us to watch these big cats from the safety of a closed vehicle and in a simulated wild landscape. The wildlife interpretation center at the ticket booking counter helps us understand the different wild animals and their natural habitat better. After this we headed to Kaneri caves, students climbed the mountain and enjoyed a lot. This was really an exciting experience. At the end students were taken to mini theater where they were shown small movie giving information about the Park.We reached back by 7pm with all the refreshing memories and firsthand experience of wild safari.

British Council – International School Award Podar International School had enrolled for British Council: International School Award for the year 2018-21. We are proud to announce that we had achieved the award after successful submission of the documentation for the activities conducted in school. Our students were excited about their International interaction enthusiastically longing for more and strongly felt that more cultural exchanges should be a part of our academic term. A remarkable improvement has been witnessed in the spirit of participation of students in various ISA activities contributing to their exposure to the international forum. Personally I feel blessed to have got all these opportunities through the ISA to interact, share, grow and above all make friends globally. The feedback received from parents about the learning of the students and it really helped in improving their communication, presentation, team work skills among the students. A remarkable improvement was seen in the staff and students as they worked together on activities and developed their skills as they collaborated with the partner schools. Students who took part in the programme have greatly improved their language skills, research skills, and skill of collaboration which will help them to grow as leaders in the global community. Spell Bee Spell Bee is a healthy spelling competition done internally in schools and externally in communities as a regional or national competition. In this competition , contestants are asked to spell a broad selection of words, usually with a varying degree of difficulty. The concept is thought to have originated in the United States. The first winner of an official spell bee was Frank Neuhauser. Spell bees aren’t named after the insect, but rather the term refers to a gathering of people who come together for a common purpose, often helping one another to achieve a task. IT HELPS THE STUDENTS IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS :        

It will not only excite competition among our children but in the same process it will encourage them to read more. Improvement in reading will definitely have a positive effect on the quality of writing. Two tool components ‘reading’ and ‘writing’ are foundational in all educational processes. Redirect the attention and interest of our children back to book. Students are encouraged to interact with each other and connect over a mutual interest in language. Gain confidence by performing in public. Training for a spell bee, students learn about word roots and origins. Students who target their spelling study not only increase their vocabulary, but develop cognitive abilities and learning strategies which can be applied to any field later in life.
