“I think it’s about feeling good in your own skin and having fun with the process. That’s really shaped how I think about beauty and why working with Glossier has felt really natural”.

Olivia’s creative input as a result of her role as ambassador…

The natural make-up company’s first campaign video with Rodrigo was – a seemingly Y2K inspired video captured by camcorders and fish-eye lenses as she showcases her deeply tinted lips and sharply winged eyeliner in repeated close up shots. Suter explained that with the company’s first ever collaboration she wanted to “challenge the notion of what a ‘typical’ celebrity beauty partnership looks like in a really fun and personal way”.

What does her role as ambassador mean for her?

Due to the new partnership, an ‘Olivia’s Favourites’ collection is available on the Glossier website, consisting of Boy Brow, Pro Tip eyeliner and Ultralip in a bundle. As well as this, Olivia has collaborated with the company to create her own limited edition collection, with a custom lavender make-up bag that includes the Ultralip and Monochromes refillable eyeshadow, as well as other exclusively purple branded products.

It’s clear that Olivia embodies the Glossier ethos, shown in her message for their brand’s cult following; “if I could send a note to the Glossier community, I’d say, you look good exactly as you are”.

Glossier and Me

Meet wellness influencer, Annyah

‘I see being a person the same as being a plant. They need to be repotted and cut back; we need to look after ourselves the same way’

Find out how wellness and growth have become the most important ingredients in her beauty routine...

So, tell me about yourself!

‘My name’s Annyah James, I work as a wellness and lifestyle content creator, I’m 26 and living in London. Currently just trying to find my way through this thing called life! I’m really interested in more natural, sustainable and more grounded sort of things.’

How would you describe your skin, your experience with it, have you had any problems before?

‘God yeah. I’ve had such a journey. I started puberty quite early; I had my first period when I was 11. From then I started to experience acne and I have skin that scars easily and its very obvious. I went through that stage where I was trying harsh things on my skin and using way too many products. Just before the pandemic I had a really bad acne flare-up that was the worse of my life! I remember I got in the car and my grandad looked at me and said, “what happened to your face?” and I felt so bad, he didn’t mean it though. After that I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), which helped me understand things, from there I started to use more gentle products. At the time I was the Milky Jelly Cleanser from Glossier because it’s nice and gentle on the skin. I started simplifying my beauty routine after that because that breakout was so so bad.’

What is one part of your skincare routine that you couldn’t live without?

‘A good cleanser. I always double cleanse at night too. I literally have a timer in my bathroom, so I can time certain steps. I’ll wash my face 60 seconds each time to really get in there and get the benefits of the products. If you’ve paid all this money, you want your skin to actually absorb and work with it, not go straight down the drain.’

What is your favourite form of self-care?

‘My love language is quality time, so when it comes to self-care, it has to be when I’m spending quality time with myself. Trying new things like going to concerts/exhibitions by myself or looking after myself. I like little maintenance things like doing my hair or nails. I see being a person the same as being a plant. Plants grow and they need to be repotted and cut back. So you have to look after yourself in the same way, trimming any dead leaves like trimming the ends of your hair etc, refresh and renew.’

What is a skin habit you wish you started earlier?

‘Exfoliating, and not with a scrub, they’re just so harsh. I like learning about acids, they make your skin glow differently. My skin has changed a lot since that, I don’t get as many blackheads and those kinds of things, I hate blackheads! We all pop them we all do it.’

Favourite Glossier products?

‘I really love the perfume. When I smell other women wearing it, I recognise the scent instantly, its smells different on everyone but in a nice way. Ugh that perfume oh my god that is my favourite perfume ever! I also love the Solar Paint bronzer. When I go on holiday I’ll carry it, and it has such a nice pigment on the skin, a nice sheen but not too heavy. My friend loves it too and she’s darker than me. For skincare, the Milky Jelly cleanser and I also really like the moisturiser for the wintertime, it’s very hydrating.’

Annyah's natural skin

Natural or statement makeup?

‘A bit of both. I used to be a makeup artist years ago, so I used to love the full face glam, thick and cakey. But after I had acne, I stopped wearing makeup, my skin was much more textured, so I avoided a heavy base. Now it’s much lighter, but I do like a dramatic eye look or trying something quirky.’

Facial or DIY mask?

‘I DIY all the time, I do my own nails and eyebrows. When you do it yourself there is so much more love and care, you can really treat yourself. I’m doing this for me, and I think that time you get with yourself is unmatched.’

Face the facts

It may be common knowledge that sunscreen is an all-yearround kind of thing, even youthful Gen Z skin needs looking after. Every beauty editor, dermatologist or older person with fab skin will stress to you the importance of wearing a good SPF every day. Whether its blazing sun or doom and gloom, UV rays can still catch you through the clouds.

Let me introduce you to Invisible Shield, your new SPF bestie

Why should an SPF be like a pore clogging cement? Invisible Shield is designed to work with your skin and not block it - no makeup ruined in the process. Keeping you safe from pollution too. The gel like formula is made to enhance your skin as well as protect, ensuring that full face you just applied stays looking fresh. Not to mention there is zero white cast, a common reason people get put off the idea of wearing SPF. This is the exact opposite of that thick and blobby sun cream your parents smothered on your face when you were younger. The gel has a sheer light coverage that smoothly glides on your face and gives a dewy finish. Say bye-bye to unsightly white streaks!

How to apply

Apply as your last skincare step and before your makeup. As simple a few pumps of this wonder gel spread across your whole face, with an instant absorption, and your skin is ready to face the day. And if a top-up is needed, it is handbag friendly so can be taken anywhere!

Don't stash your sunscreen this winter, make Invisible Shield your skincare saviour this coming season

What exactly is SPF?

It stands for Sun Protection Factor, and in its simplest terms is a measurement of the amount of time you spend catching rays and how well it will protect you from UV radiation - the stuff that can hurt our precious skin. Even in the depths of December, we still need it.

What happens when you don’t wear your sunscreen

Let’s get a bit scary for min. Not wearing your SPF can have some not-so-pretty consequences. Now you probably already know that the big C is a result of not wearing it but what are the others?

Increased wrinkles – just like a raisin, your skin will dry out from the sun, sunscreen will protect and keep it plump.

Severe sunburn – now this one may seem obvious, but sunburn can be a lot longer term than you think. Blistering and super-sore skin can be a result of this.

Scarring – when exposed to sunlight, healing wounds or acne can actually get worse. UV radiation on healing tissue can result in postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (A.K.A. PIH).

Going Green?

What is ‘Greenwashing?’

The practise of making a company's products appear environmentally friendly. "Greenwashing" is the process of making an unsubstantiated claim to mislead consumers into thinking that a company's products are ecologically friendly or have a positive impact than they do.

In recent years, the quantity of products bearing sustainable or green labels has grown dramatically, and several household brands have engaged in ‘Greenwashing.’ However, even as companies are rushing to assert green claims, emissions keep rising, extraction goes up, and overproduction spirals.

Who has been accused of ‘Greenwashing’

In the UK, plastic packaging accounts for nearly 70% of our plastic waste, but fewer than 10% of everyday plastic, including plastic packaging gets recycled in the UK. The globe currently generates 141 million tonnes of plastic packaging yearly, with no signs that this rate of production is slowing down. L'Oréal were lately come under fire for making claims that its Elvive Full Restore 5 shampoo pack as ‘more sustainable’ without providing any context. As the Changing Markets Foundation (CMF) flagged, the claim is not a realistic comparison as consumers are not informed what is sustainable. A large statement on the same product reads, ‘100% recycled plastic bottle.’ The bottle cap however, is not constructed from waste materials, as the CMF explicitly notes in the fine print.

Statistics show that 120 billion units of cosmetic packaging is produced, over 80% of this is either too small or contains mixed materials for recycling, therefore this ends up in landfill. 70% of carbon emissions documented to the industry can be reduced significantly, using refillable and reusable packaging. At the launch of Kim Kardashian’s new skincare line, SKKN’s refillable ideas were met with online criticism from consumers seeing the obvious disregard for packaging wastage. Kardashian features in a video on SKKN’s Instagram demonstrating how to refill the new cleanser. The video, shows a solid pack being replaced into the unnecessary outer layer, provoking anger amongst shoppers one of whom wrote under the post ‘Personally I would just buy the refill, the container doesn’t do anything, it’s just waste.’ Brands to tread lightly when using terminology such as ‘sustainable’ ‘eco’ ‘green’ or ‘environmentally friendly’ to minimise the risk for backlash or worse the cancel culture. By 2050 the amount of plastic in our ocean will outnumber fish, this leads to dead zones, already 500 marine locations worldwide have been declared as dead zones, leading to over 100 million marine animals dying.

Who are the beauty brands ‘greenwashing’ and what steps can be taken to raise consumer awareness of this?

How to spot Greenwashing:

Vague buzzwords, ‘all-natural’ or ‘eco-friendly’ these phrases are usually meaningless as there is no regulatory oversight, they are used as a marketing ploy.

Instead look behind the buzzwords for certifications. Certifications on product packaging have standards and regulations, they offer real environmental and labour protection.

Green packaging and marketing on companies packaging, some brands may utilise the colour green or nature imagery to suggest sustainability, even if they aren’t. look for simple compostable packaging.

What’s at stake if we don’t act now?

Millions of animals, including fish, birds, and other marine life, are killed by plastic each year. Around 700 species, some of which are endangered, are known to have been harmed by plastic waste

15 trillion microplastic particles are floating on the surface of our oceans, if humans are exposed to microplastics this could cause serious damage to human cells.

The concertation of Carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, as of July 2021 is the highest recorded in human history, this supercharges the natural greenhouse effect causing temperatures to rise.

Eleven percent of the World’s population is vulnerable due to the impacts of climate change such as droughts, floods, extreme heat waves, and sea-levels rising.

Brands who are doing better?

More than 75% of the plant materials used in Weleda products come from biodynamic, organic, or regulated wild harvesting. It is one of only two beauty companies to have the UEBT mark, and it was the first to receive a Look for The Zero label, demonstrating that none of its products include any type of plastic. The union for Ethical Bio-Trade has recognised its dedication to biodiversity and ethical treatment of workers.

The Body Shop, it created Community Trade in 1987, a commitment to local suppliers and programmes, becoming a pioneer in the industry long before many other beauty brands. Since then, it has made several investments in recycled plastic and reusable bottles, provided 2,500 waste collectors in India with better working conditions, better access to education and healthcare, a fair wage for their labour, and a steady income. Stores across the UK will accept empty packaging for reusing and recycling.

SCENTS AND SENSES

GOOD OLD

Have you ever walked past the street and passed someone that had a scent that dragged you back to one of your most beautiful moments of life? Or even reminds you of someone that you may want nothing to do with ever again- like ever... Well, thatʼs because scent and memory link together. “Our experience with Odors is typically where Odor is the backdrop or context for a person, place or emotional state,” says DR Pamela Dalton, PhD, MPH and experimental psychologist and faculty member at Montell Chemical Senses Center. When those are important or salient events, the odor can be strongly associated with memory- to the extent that re-experiencing the odor often revives the emotions or feelings that were initially experienced, Dalton then goes to explain. Other than sensory experiences, the stronger emotional memory connection with odor appears to be due to the privileged access of the central brain structures of the olfactory system to the limbic system structures- such as the amygdala and hippocampus, which are involved in regulating emotion and emotional memories, Claire Gillespie wrote in “This is why we associate memories so strongly with specific smells.”

In the ancient world, as we know from all our nativity plays with frankincense and myrrh a child, scent has always been highly prized and valued as wealth (or gift). Which had then led to many traditions. The Ancient Egyptians burned a strong scented incense called Kyphi that is made from Henna, Myrrh, Cinnamon, and juniper as religious offerings. The Ancient Egyptians had also created fragranced body lotion by Soaking Aromatic Wood, Gum and then used the resins in water and oil to apply it onto themselves. The Ancient Egyptians also had a distinct fragrance for the dead. Their word for perfume was translated to “fragrances of the Gods.” In modern day religious practice, scent is important, such as incense in Christian churches and Hindu temples. In Islamic scripture, the Prophet Mohammed is said to have written “Perfumes are foods that reawaken the spirit,”. How does fragrance intertwine with our daily lives deeper than just smelling good? Well, perfume can be used to heal- especially lavender scents that reduces scent and anxiety, and things such as Aromatherapy have been introduced which simply means smelling oils and fragrances to heal physical and emotional problems and is being revived to help balance hormonal and body energy. The theory behind Aromatherapy implies that using essential oils helps boost the immune system when inhaled or applied. Aside from fragrances being able to help heal our inner and outer selves, it may also help fill our void, relationship wise- as fragrances are a key factor in attracting other people. This is where pheromones are introduced. Pheromones are body secretions that cause a trigger in the reproductive behaviour of the opposite sex. They are processed by one of the two areas in the nose that carries the message to the brain and can stimulate sexual behaviour. So how does that magically attract your romantic interest? Well, that is because perfume manufacturers have included pheromones as one of their ingredients. Simply have a look at the label, and the words that begin with “andro”- specifically androsentol, androstenone and androstadienone and those are the main pheromones included in fragrances.

What do young people associate particular scents with? To find out I asked 7 young people about what particular fragrances drag them back to a particular period of their time, whether it was their happiest time of their lives, or whether it was on the completely different end of the scale and might have been one of the worst times 0of their lives. Iurie,19 said that R.E.M by Ariana Grande reminds him of the whole of year 13. Maria,19 said “Versace blue jeans reminds me of Andre because itʼs what he wears to football training”, ah nothing smells more beautiful than the blossoming of young true love!. Layla,18 got more specific and mentioned that the Jo Malone perfume reminds her of her mum on holiday. Jevane,19 said that Calvin Klein eternity for Women reminds him of his Mrs. Ellie,20 said “Joop reminds me of my ex”- a not so fond memory. There was even a specific memory with completely juxtaposing memories. Emily,19 said that Paco Rabanne 1 Million fragrance gave her fond memories as it reminds her of the time that she had first met her boyfriend, Whereas Kyle,20 said that Paco Rabanne 1 Million “stinks” of his secondary school.
