Aim In this lesson, students read about some new developments in design technology and design their own new gadgets. 1 Reading • Ask the students to work in pairs to match the words with their definitions. This activity is designed to pre-teach some important words in the text. • Ask a few students to share their ideas with the class. • Ask the students to read the text and see if their answers were correct. • Ask the students further questions to make sure that they understand the words: Do you have wi-fi in your home? Do you use wi-fi when you are not at home? If so, where? (e.g. in a café, library, airport, on a train, etc.) Have you ever used a metal detector? If so, why? (e.g. to look for buried coins, a lost ring, etc.) Why do you think the police use lie detector tests? (to find out if criminals are telling the truth) Where in the home can you find a USB connector? Tell them to think about the questions before they begin. Ask them to write a description of their gadget (what it does, who it’s for, how it works) and to draw a picture to show what it will look like. • The groups should present their ideas to the class. Ask the class to vote for the best gadget.
