Macmillan Past

present... Macmillan has continued to educate generations of communities by developing ground-breaking English Language Teaching (ELT) and curriculum materials. Macmillan Education is present in 120 countries.

Macmillan has been a forward-thinking publisher for more than 165 years. When brothers Daniel and Alexander Macmillan founded Macmillan in 1843, they created a company that recognized and valued great writing. They enjoyed success in the literary and academic community, publishing authors such as Lewis Carroll (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland), Henry James, Thomas Hardy and H.G. Wells. In the areas of science and education, Macmillan founded the prestigious journal Nature (1869) and the Palgrave imprint, promoting education and academic scholarship around the world.

Our philosophy is based on supporting education with high quality materials and specific local publishing to meet the needs of teachers in whatever country or region they are based. In the 1960’s, under the direction of Harold Macmillan, the then Prime Minister, Macmillan expanded and established itself as a world-leading educational publisher.

...and future. Macmillan Iberia has been publishing ELT materials both digital and in print for over 25 years in Spain, and now publishes children’s literature and textbooks for Ciclos Formativos. 2012 saw the launch of our innovative service provider Macmillan Training Services, which is already establishing a reputation in the field of educational services and training.

Macmillan is proud of its tradition of working together with local experts to provide relevant educational materials from pre-Primary through to adult education. As part of our desire to continue to innovate and lead the way in ELT materials in Spain, we are delighted to announce the launch of a new joint venture with the leading Spanish publisher Edelvives. The ByME brand (By Macmillan Edelvives) will publish specifically for the increasing number of bilingual and trilingual projects across the country. Our aim is to combine the best of ELT publishing with the best of curricular publishing. It promises to be exciting.

5

Macmillan Your partner in education The process of every Macmillan publication starts with listening to teachers. Working together with teachers and educational institutions is crucial to understanding what course materials are most required in different regions. That’s why Macmillan’s editorial teams and sales representatives spend vital time with teachers and students researching what learning materials and delivery methods will work best for them. This essential feedback and work together help us to to develop the most effective and suitable resources for the local ELT markets.

Educational legislation One of Macmillan’s strengths lies in our long-lasting relationships with national and local educational authorities, ensuring all our publications meet reform requirements and local legislation. Full curricular documentation is also provided for our locally produced courses in the language of your choice, available on our website.

Common European Framework All of our publications are linked to the levels defined by the Common European Framework of Reference, as well as providing a wide range of material to prepare external exams such as Cambridge or Trinity. Through our materials we provide tools for the acquisition and development of skills, competencies and strategies which will allow our students to continue learning throughout their lives.

Teacher Training Services Macmillan Teacher Training has been offering quality training to teachers all around Spain for more than 25 years. Our training is designed to be practical, participative and relevant to teachers from different backgrounds and sectors. We continuously strive to be at the forefront of innovation as well as changes in approaches to teaching. For this reason, this year we will be offering a wide range of practical training which addresses the challenges and changes faced by teachers whilst recognising the importance of good teaching practice.

I was working in a physics laboratory called CERN. CERN is in Geneva, the Switzerland. At CERN, people study High Energy Physics. That is physics of really, really small particles – particles much smaller than atoms. If you want to investigate really, really small things, you need enormous machines called accelerators. That’s what they have at CERN.

Cross-curricular – Science The inventor of the World Wide Web

Cross-curricular and literary texts.

1 LISTENING 0.00 Listen to a radio programme about Sir Tim BernersLee, the inventor of the WWW. Does the presenter say anything about … 1 when Berners-Lee was a child? Yes/No 2 when he was at university? Yes/No 3 his life now? Yes/No 2 Listen again and choose the correct alternative. 1 Berners-Lee was born in the south-west of England/London/Switzerland. 2 Berners-Lee liked riding on trains/ building model trains/watching trains. 3 Berners-Lee’s first contact with electronic gadgets was making a model train/ making something for his model trains/ repairing the TV. 4 Berners-Lee made a TV program/computer/ computer program when he was at university. 5 Berners-Lee studied physics at university because he thought it was more practical than maths/he didn’t like maths/his parents taught physics.

2

Well, things were very frustrating in the past. There was different information on different computers, but you couldn’t get all the information with just one computer. People at CERN came from universities all over the world. They brought all types of computers with different types of software. Sometimes you had to learn a take different program for each computer. So I wrote some programs to And information from one computer system to put it in another system. then I thought “Can’t we connect all these different information systems read could Everybody system? information imaginary one and make just the same system.” And that became the WWW.

3

Actually inventing the WWW was simple. The difficult part was to many persuade everybody to use the same system. It’s incredible that so people now use it.

4

make Well, because it is, basically. I want you to know that you too can using new programs which create new, fun ways of using computers and the Internet. I want you to know that, if you can imagine a computer doing something, you can program a computer to do that. The only limit is your imagination. And a couple of laws of physics. Of course, what happens with computers is that you have a basic, simple idea. Then you have to add things on to it to make it work. But all good computer programs are simple inside.

Student’s Gateway online Authentic texts longer and more weighty than in many young adult courses.

3 You are going to read some Frequently Asked Questions from the website of Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web. Match the questions with answers 1–4 in the text. a Was it easy to invent the WWW? b Where were you when you invented the WWW? c Why do you always say everything is simple? d What made you think of the WWW?

Branding is not enough to differentiate almost identical products. Business guru Jack Trout thinks that companies overcommunicate their difference. Most customers decide which product to buy before going to the store. In the past, design teams were not told about financial and manufacturing problems so as not to limit their creativity. Creative ideas are often simplified and adapted because focus groups don’t like them. The task force can’t leave their hotel until every member of the team is enthusiastic about the new concept. Consumers are not always conscious of what they need. New China Packaging’s task forces need months or years to deliver a consumer-validated package.

SURVEYS show that intense frustration and even injury caused by modern packaging is on the increase, especially amongst seniors. Seventy per cent of over 50s admit to injuring fingers, hands and shoulders as a result of ‘wrap rage’, a new term used to describe the irritation and loss of self-control experienced when struggling to open wrapping. In recent years manufacturers have been under increasing pressure to keep food items sterile, to provide child-proof packaging for dangerous or toxic household cleaning products, to protect products during transport and to reduce theft from shops. At the same time, they are forced to keep costs to a minimum. As a result, packaging has become ever more resistant to fingers, nails and even teeth. In their ‘… consumers use all kinds frustration with of tools and knives …’ plastic packs, which defeat all attempts to open them, even with scissors, consumers use all kinds of tools and knives. At best, the product inside the packaging is at risk; at worst, it is hardly surprising that 60,000 people a year are injured in Great Britain alone. Some of the most common triggers of wrap rage are processed cheese packages, tightly wrapped CDs, child-proof tops on medicine bottles, and milk and juice cartons. Ring-pull cans are particularly problematic for older fingers and delicate skin. Even fighting to remove price tags from items bought as gifts can raise blood pressure, and unnecessary overpackaging is pure provocation to the ecologically-minded. However it seems there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Manufacturers are listening to customers’ complaints, and some have begun to research and invest in more consumer-friendly packaging. The bottom line is that if they don’t react, they risk losing sales if customers simply stop buying products with packaging that offers too much resistance.
