aris Hilton is radiant. Her sparkle sets hearts on fire and her shine is true and spectacular, most especially when she is by the shore. It is at the beach where she finds her balance, her sanctuary, her release – whether taking a dip in the cool waters, lounging on powdery white sand, sipping afternoon cocktails, bronzing her lovely skin, or grooving to the beats at the beachside bar. Century Properties brings all that Paris loves about the world’s best beaches to the Azure: the country’s first and only masterplanned urban residential community with a man-made beach and the exciting Paris Beach Club. Paris sure knows how to light it up – and now so can you! For a home in paradise right in the heart of the city, look no further than the Azure. Because as Paris knows, there’s nothing else like it in the world.

azure.com.ph THE AZURE is located on SLEX (West Service Road) between the Bicutan and Sucat Exits, directly adjacent to SM Bicutan – about a 15 minute drive to Alabang in the south, and 10 minutes to Makati in the north via the expanded skyway.

Azure Urban Resort Residences is being developed by Century Limitless Corporation, a member of the Century Properties Group. The design of the beach club by Paris Hilton does not in any way change the name of the project. In no way is Azure or Century related to Hilton Hotels Worldwide.

Christina recently published a photojournalistic book titled Passion in Paradise about Catholicism in Goa, India. Her children’s book, A Desert Tale, will be hitting the bookshelves soon and she is currently working on her first novel, set in Cambodia. On page 34, she shows us around the hottest places in her current city, Dubai.

JOEL ADAMS is an American expat living in Doha, working as public relations manager for Enana Production and as a teacher of acting with his company, Theatrix. He has lived outside the United States most of his life, including several European countries, the Philippines and Thailand as well as Jordan, Syria and Qatar in the Middle East. He is married and lives with his wife in Doha, his children having grown up and left home, also scattered in several parts of the globe, carrying on the world traveler tradition. He has written plays for performance and other literary pieces, but this article on Doha (on page 42) is his first travel article.

Honolulu-based MARGIE JACINTO is grateful to live in Hawaii. “It makes travelling a whole lot easier,” she says. “After our holiday comes to an end, I find great solace in knowing I’ll be returning to yet another vacation destination.” On page 48, she guides us through the ins and outs of Honolulu. PRESIDENT’S NOTE

PAL’s A330-300 HGW: A game changer After the successful launch last month of the Airbus 321 as the new flagship of our single-aisle fleet, we welcome this month the latest addition to our wide-body fleet – the Airbus A330-300 High Gross Weight aircraft. As with the A321, PAL is the first Philippine carrier to fly this newest, most advanced member of the A330 family of jets. The High Gross Weight model is a greatly enhanced version of the classic A330. It’s called such because its maximum take-off weight has been increased to 235 tons, thereby extending the aircraft’s range by 540 nautical miles, to around 5,585 miles. What does this mean? In simple terms, it enables PAL to open up new routes that until now were out of range for our older A330s, which will be progressively phased out as the 20 HGW models we ordered are delivered. Thus, regions such as the Middle East and Southern Europe can now be served more cost-effectively by PAL with this new aircraft. The extra-weight capability also allows us to sit more passengers in our comfortable, bi-class cabin. Of course, the A330-300 HGW incorporates the latest in aircraft technology. In a phrase, our new wide-body jet is a game changer. But for all its technical enhancements, it’s what’s inside the A330-300 HGW that makes PAL the ideal choice for the cost-conscious Filipino market, without sacrificing comfort. The cabin is configured into two classes – Economy and a new Premium Economy. This gives you an all-important privilege you don’t get on budget airlines with single-class economy service – freedom of choice. Economy Class passengers are not forgotten either. Aside from comfortable seats, passengers can enjoy pre-loaded iPads for in-flight entertainment. GSM and wifi capability are also installed, enabling you to make phone calls and browse the internet while in-flight. We hope to welcome you onboard our brand-new A330-300 HGW when it makes its much-anticipated debut on our Middle East services starting in October. There’s more to come as our fleet renewal program gets going in earnest. Mabuhay!

Coming Soon: Arabian Nights

AL will be flying soon to two of the most exciting and dynamic destinations in the Middle East—Dubai and Doha. Flights to Dubai will begin on November 6 and Doha on October 29. Dubai is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates; the rest are: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras alKhaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain. Dubai is the second largest city in the emirates and is considered the business, financial, and leisure center of the Middle East. Dubai is like the modern interpretation of Arabian Nights where the fantastic and fabulous come to life. As our contributor Christina Fernandes reports in this issue, it has the Ibn

OPULENT DREAMS: If you’re willing to shell out about US$18,000 a night, you can book a Royal Suite at the Burj Al Arab (LEFT). But if you have a tighter budget, a desert safari (ABOVE) can also give you that extraordinary Dubai experience.

Battuta Mall that traces the travels of this great Arabian explorer, and the Dubai Mall “where world records are broken” like the world’s largest aquarium and waterfalls. Doha, on the other hand, according to our writer Joel Adams, is more subdued and instead of imitating Dubai, it offers traditional attractions like their Souq Waqif, which Joel notes, is “at least a hundred years old.” Qatar (Doha is its capital), by the way, is considered the world’s richest country with a per capita income estimated to be $88,222 beating Singapore (3rd place) with $56,694 and the United States (7th place) at $46,860. Our kababayans (countrymen) who work in Dubai and Doha should take advantage of these coming PAL flights so they can avail of good competitive ticket prices and convenience of easily connecting to PAL domestic destinations. There’s nothing like taking a PAL flight after a long stint abroad. You feel that you have already come home when the friendly cabin crew greets you in our own national language, and the in-flight menu include Filipino dishes that you have missed. For those seeking the extraordinary, Dubai and Doha can also provide the fabulous and the exotic.

It is both a blessing and a lusty cheer. “Mabuhay” (ma-boo-high) is such a large word that it lends itself to a wide number of secondary uses: Welcome, Congratulations, Thanks, Godspeed, Hello, Good Luck, Cheers, Posit, Sante, Viva, Kambei, Aloha, and many other expressions of goodwill. All these are a part of life, but it is the gift of life that makes them possible. “Mabuhay,” in other words, is an invocation and a celebration of life itself.

START YOUR ENGINES: This year, around 100,000 are anticipated to watch the race on the trackside.

SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX: ASIA’S ULTIMATE ROADSHOW

D

usk begins to fall and the shimmering daytime heat of Singapore subsides into one of the world’s hottest electric light shows that make this city truly come alive. Marina Bay’s amazing cityscape illuminates the skyline with a glitzy and brightly clad skyscraper horizon, while the hypnotic Singapore Flyer gently swirls into the darkness. It truly is a sight to behold, one that must rank as the ultimate Singapore experience. Almost. For one weekend, on September 21 to 23, this glorious night show of the Lion City really does roar into the night, with the sound of the engines of the word’s fastest cars at the 2013 Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix (GP). For the whole of the week leading up to the GP, Singapore goes into carnival mode and life becomes as fast as the racing ahead. Every single shopping complex is alive with F1 promotions and merchandise, creating a bargain-hunting frenzy. You can even find the odd GP car displayed around town, and possibly even bump into a driver or two. 32 I Mabuhay Magazine I September 2013

The already bustling streets and hawker food stalls of the older parts of town almost double trade up with hungry race fans sampling the city’s famous cuisine. It’s perhaps the most exciting week of the year to visit Singapore. There’s little doubt that Marina Bay boasts one of the world’s most dominant city skylines. Throw in one of the world’s greatest and highest profile sporting events and you have a match made in heaven—a spectacle unlike any other in Asia, or anywhere else for that matter. The atmosphere here on race weekend is even more electrifying than the current being used up by the amazing lightshow. Engines roar and then the show hits the road. Race fans gaze on in awe at the high-speed excitement of the occasion, mesmerized by the glamour of the occasion. It’s a gladiatorial street battle like no other in motorsport. This is a real street race: tight, twisty, and highly technical, demanding the utmost in driver skill. It’s a race that favors the most skillful driver as much as it does the fastest car. Throw in the veil of night and things

ALL REVVED UP: With exciting scenes such as these , it’s no wonder that the Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix was awarded the Best Sport Event of the Year at the Singapore Sports Award in 2011.

enter another dimension—it truly is unlike any other Formula 1 race on the calendar. It’s just under 6 kilometers for a lap of the circuit, so there’s hardly time for a handshake before the cars come hurtling past again. The high tensile buzz of these finely tuned beasts can be close to deafening at times, but it’s all part of the experience, a major part in fact. This roar doesn’t subside at all during the race, as the circuit is so compact that you can hear the cars from the other side. Thankfully, huge TV screens are positioned around the track to make sure that everybody knows who is leading and who is due to pass by next, so you don’t miss a beat. Street races are quite rare in Formula 1 for safety. Racing such highly sensitive and fast cars on even the safest of racetracks is a tough and life-threatening task, let alone on regular suburban streets. The Monaco GP was long considered

the doyenne of street races, one of the most dangerous and demanding of all motor races. Then, in 2008 the Singapore Formula 1 GP was launched with a street race and a night race, making it unique within the sport, and arguably the most spectacular of all motor races. This was not the first time that the Singapore GP had taken place; way back in 1966 the first GP was raced on the roads of Singapore (then called The Orient Year GP). The race was renamed the Malaysian GP the following year, and became the Singapore GP after Singapore’s independence. The original race was a Formula Libre (open category) event, and ceased trading in 1973. German ace Sebastian Vettel has won the last two editions of the GP, although 2009 winner Lewis Hamilton is currently on great form, so an exciting race is on the cards for this year’s star performance. Throughout the preceding

week there are various side events happening around the city, but the real show begins on Friday. Not only will you be able to catch the qualifying runs for F1 grid positions, there’s also a GP2 and a Porsche Carrera Cup race. GP2 is basically the step beneath Formula 1, and a series that has produced many of the current F1 champions, while the Porsche Carrera Cup sees its namesake sports cars battling it out around the same circuit. Equally impressive sideshows abound. Throughout the weekend, some of the world’s leading artists take to two stages to entertain the postrace crowds. This star-studded lineup includes Rihanna, Justin Bieber, The Killers, and Bigbang, as well as Bob Geldof and the legendary Tom Jones, with strong support from rising local, classical, and world music acts. Super illusionist Dynamo will also be roaming free and performing his mind-boggling magic during this great weekend. n

Getting to and from the circuit is a breeze, thanks to the close proximity of several MRT stations. Don’t buy from ticket touts—passes/tickets are bar coded and can be bought right up until race day. Touted tickets have been known to have invalid codes. Final schedules will not be announced until closer to the event. Check out www.singaporegp.sg for details. The best seats in the house are the most expensive ones. The Green Room (Turn 3), Turn 3 Premier Grandstand (A6–A8), and Turn 1 Grandstand offer the best views. OASIS IN THE DESERT: Bab Al Shams’ luxurious amenities stand out in the arid landscape and promise a unique desert experience.

DREAMING OF DUBAI

T

he Dubai of today is known for its mega malls, towering behemoths, and glitzy hotels. But those who dig deeper can also discover ancient Arabia alongside modern mammon. The United Arab Emirates’ most famous emirate is a more versatile destination than its reputation leads on. TRADITIONAL DUBAI Bur Dubai and Deira along Dubai Creek, which splits the city, are home to much of what’s left of the olden days here. Many traditional residential neighborhoods were demolished to give way for modern ones. But in recent years, the Dubai government has made efforts to preserve relics of its past. History buffs may enjoy a stroll through the Bastakiya, also referred to as the Al Fahidi Historical District, whose 34 I Mabuhay Magazine I September 2013

original residents made their living from pearl diving. Its labyrinth of narrow cobblestone alleys is flanked by traditional mud-houses and wind towers. The Dubai Museum, which houses artifacts representing the emirate’s pre-history up to modernity, can be found in this area. A good shopping experience is never far away in Dubai. However, and historic or not, the Bastakiya is no exception. The textile souq’s luxurious cloths, shoes, clothes, and souvenirs attract many bargain hunters. Bayt Al Wakheel, a traditional restaurant on the waterfront, is reminiscent of Dubai’s pre–oil boom charm. Just across the creek are the spice and gold souq, which every tourist should visit at least once. The heaps of jewels and precious metals at the gold souq seem almost obscene, but walking through

its glimmering, shimmering alleys is great fun nevertheless. Crossing the water to get to the souq is itself an authentic and scenic experience: small boats called abras ferry people to and fro every few minutes throughout the day. Aside from the abras, there are also water-taxis that provide transport between certain destinations along the creek, and the Al Shindagha Historical Area can be reached easily from Bur Dubai this way. It is home to the Heritage Village, where Emirati women bake local breads, cook traditional foods, and make local handicrafts. The house of Sheikh Saeed al Maktoum, the current ruler’s grandfather, has been preserved as a museum and is also located here.

MODERN DUBAI Adventure-seekers and children will find delight in the city’s water parks. Although Aquaventure at the Atlantis Hotel (www.atlantisthepalm.com) on the Palm Jumeirah is now the country’s most visited water park, Wild Wadi (www.jumeirah.com), with its 1,001 Nights theme and location next to the iconic Burj Al Arab, is still popular. Dubai’s shopping malls, each very unique, are among the top reasons many tourists visit and the emirate’s city planners have embraced this trend with fervor. The Mall of the Emirates (www. malloftheemirates.com/en) is home to Ski Dubai (www.skidxb.com), the Middle East’s only indoor ski slope. Watching penguins waddle around the snow park as the temperatures outside soar past 40 degrees is a slightly surreal experience. Another interesting venue is Ibn Battuta Mall (www.ibnbattutamall.com), which is themed along the travels of the legendary Arab explorer. Shoppers can wander underneath the great dome at the Persia court, admire a Chinese sailing junk at the China court, and marvel at the life-size elephant in the India court. The relaxed atmosphere and healthy food at the Lime Tree Café here is worth a visit. Souk Madinat (www.jumeirah.com), a recreation of a traditional market at the Madinat Jumeirah located next to the Burj Al Arab, is also a great spot for good food. Dozens of gourmet outlets here offer everything from Belgian beer to Moroccan meat. Finally, there is the king of malls, Dubai Mall (www.thedubaimall.com), with its 1,200 stores, an ice skating rink, and a cascading waterfall. This is a place where world records are broken. The largest aquarium in the world along with its 36 I Mabuhay Magazine I September 2013

Every day after 6 p.m. the world’s largest fountain, Dubai Fountain, comes to life and dances to music against the backdrop of the 829-meter Burj Khalifa’s (www.burjkhalifa.ae), the world’s tallest skyscraper. Those not afraid of height can take a lift up to the tower’s observation deck on the 124nd floor. Lunch, high tea, and dinner are served at its restaurant, At.Mosphere (www.atmosphereburjkhalifa. com), on the 122nd floor, which promises no less than the city’s best views. Souk Al Bahar (www.soukalbahar.ae), another retail center on the opposite side of Dubai Fountain, is home to many popular restaurants, such as Abdel Wahab for Lebanese food, Mango Tree for Thai, and Baker and Spice for breakfast. Turbulent desert safaris complete with dune bashing and dinner at a desert camp are one option. Quiet drinks and snacks on the Bab Al Shams Desert Resort’s (www.meydanhotels.com/ babalshams/) roof terrace with stunning views of the surrounding sand dunes are another. Either way, getting out of the city has its charms. Dubai is a destination of superlatives and contradictions. It is simultaneously garish, glamorous, and glittering, but it also has its unexpectedly traditional, quiet, and reflective sides. One thing is for sure: you won’t get bored here. n

artorial elegance is, more often that not, distinctly attributed to the realm of haute couture—structured and always seeking to challenge the atmosphere of infinite possibilities in the industry. Globe-trotting women who have the passion for discovering the next big thing may find that it is in the immersion of different cultures that one gets to capture the complete sense of the word. To be breathing the lifestyle of hopping off one airport to get to the next definitely sharpens one’s eyes to the visual fashion feast that every destination has to offer. Amidst this whir of intersections, from language barriers to a clashing of cultures, you will never forget the familiar feeling of home— touching base with your normal routine, going on to live life as we know it. For Valentino’s Fall/Winter 2013 Collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli

have created a jetsetter’s quencher to her ultimate dearth. Seamlessly sewing together both worlds, the collection has evolved into becoming a glorification of everyday life; styles that are serene, self-possessed yet never a portrayal of static femininity; a sense of detail and the pleasure of an aesthetic and cultural métissage; and a taste for color. Inspired by a historic moment of great ferment, travels and exchanges, they reflect a sense of the present that is fueled by contrasts. For the latest assemblage, Valentino’s Garavani features icons that will evolve with their identity over time. The presence of the Rockstud, VaVaVoom, and Lock, together with the complementing styles of combining Valentino classics with punk and palazzo elements, form a timeless masterpiece that encapsulate the rigidness of modernity and elegance of the signature look.

For example, crystal pavé motifs encrust the metal studs of Rockstud Bal. They run around bracelet-handles on wide clutches, and they illuminate the clasps on tiny sculptural minaudiere bags. Unpredictable light captures the gaze. Simple yet bold lacquer studs in tone create perturbing profiles on Punkouture patent leather bags that inexorably come in ivory, black and red. Combining different styles and interpretations becomes a method and creates a mood. As remnants of one’s travels remain with you even after the experience has come to a close, Chiuri and Piccioli have definitely paid much attention to detail in this collection. The message possesses the penetrating precision of lightness: play with fashion and surprise yourself through continuous reinvention and consistent change—just as any of your travels should always be. n

atar has recently been purported to be the richest country on earth when its per capita GDP is considered. It has gained further worldwide recognition by being the first Arab country to be chosen to host the FIFA World Cup, which it will do so in 2022. It is also the home base for the rapidly growing television network, Al Jazeera. Although its capital Doha is growing and modernizing, it is a late bloomer compared to other Gulf cities. It is not the holiday or shopping destination that Dubai and Abu Dhabi are well known for. Alternatively, Doha is more known for education, sports, and culture and is actively trying not to be a second-rate carbon copy of Dubai. If you need to visit Doha, do so between October and April when the weather is pleasant. The heat in the summer months rises to as high as 50 degrees Celsius and humidity skyrockets, so people don’t go out much in the daytime. Once you’ve settled in your hotel, you will want to know what to do and see for the next day or two. 42 I Mabuhay Magazine I September 2013

The Museum of Islamic Arts (www.mia.org.qa/en), considered Doha’s primary tourist destination, is not to be missed. Situated on the bay, the building and the grounds themselves are a sight to see. Admission to the museum and surrounding park are normally free, and you can spend a few hours wandering around through the many exhibitions of gorgeous Islamic art that span 1,400 years and cover three continents. When you’ve seen enough, take a stroll through the grassy lawns of the lovely museum garden, which curves round to give you a panoramic view of the city and the bay. From the museum, it’s a very short walk or taxi ride to Souq Waqif. The market, which dates back at least a hundred years, has been recently restored to its former glory. There are shops selling traditional garments, spices, handicrafts, and souvenirs, in addition to dozens of restaurants serving cuisines from all over the world. While in the Souq, you will be immediately struck with the cosmopolitan flavor of Doha; there are the ubiquitous white-robed men and black abaya’ed women, but you will also see people from every part of the globe. In fact, of Qatar’s approximately 1.9 million residents, only about 250,000 are Qataris. The rest are comprised of Indians, Filipinos, Americans, Canadians, Europeans, Africans, Nepalese, and many other nationalities. If you like fresh air and exercise, take a stroll along the Corniche by the bay. You will pass the dhow (Arab lateen-rigged boat) port with hundreds of wooden ships of the type the Gulf Arabs have fished, dived for pearls, and explored the world in for over a thousand years. For a small fee you can take a ride around the bay in one that is docked on the Corniche.

You can even hire one for half a day and go further out and even eat a delicious meal prepared on board. If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, you can ask the dhow to anchor for a while and you can dive in the water and swim around a bit. When the dhow is back at port and as you keep walking back toward West Bay, you will pass Bidda Park on your left and the Orient Pearl Restaurant on your right. Have a drink or lunch at the latter—you will be rewarded with a splendid view of the full curve of the Corniche. As the day wears on, you can visit any number of bars, clubs, and restaurants in the five-star hotels, the only places you can buy alcoholic beverages. enthusiasm at the quality of the golf courses in Mission Hills. On the first tee, the foursome breathed in the mountain air as they looked down the par-five first hole, which plays downhill to a small green. Golf mates Dionne Cu and Maline Flores also marveled at the course’s signature hole, the seventh, which is a picturesque par three perched on a cliff with 180-degree to forever views of three other Mission Hills golf courses snaking through a forest. Golfers Mely Leyeza and Veronica Veloso were too busy conquering the course to take souvenir shots, and later said they would just rely on the etched memories in their giddy golf minds. Mabek Kawsek and Magga Wu said that their English-speaking caddies were helpful throughout the round, especially at the climactic 18th, with its two-tiered green beside the quaint clubhouse. The Annika course is also lit up for golfers to finish the round after sunset. Night golf brings more mystery to the course as the stars twinkle in the distant sky. It’s a golfer’s dream! The Tagaytay Highlands crew next ventured onto the Jack Nicklausdesigned course, the very first course finished in the complex and one that is accredited by the U.S. PGA Tour for major tournaments. Tennel Chu, Mission Hills Vice Chairman, surprised the team by showing up on the first hole with a gift. He also congratulated them on their historic Grand Slam by winning the three majors of

Philippine women’s golf: the 2012 Women’s Golf Association of the Philippines (WGAP) Cup Matchplay, the eight-leg WGAP Circuit, and, finally, the 2013 Ladies Federation League Championship. The next course on the Tagaytay Highlands team’s agenda was the Wind Valley golf course. This course reminded teammates Hedy See, Gie Bote, and Totelle Dimson of their home course, the mountainous and wind-swept Tagaytay Highlands. That said, Wind Valley is more of an “alpine” adventure, with undulating fairways bordered by lakes, cliffs, waterfalls, and surrounded by Swiss-lookalike hotels. Each hole has a different character and the golfer must think hard to pick the right clubs, what with wicked dog legs and ravines to capture errant balls. The signature hole must be the ninth, atop a mountain. On the distant horizon can be seen a gilded Quan Yin overlooking the course. The sight makes one feel that he has achieved golf heaven. At the end of the golf round, Mission Hills offers a world-class spa and numerous international food choices. The extensive pro shop has all the high-end American and European brands of golf equipment and clothing. It’s enough to make one feel that China pricing is not as low as one thinks. But it’s all just part of the transformation that the high-brow game of golf has brought to proletarian China. n www.philippineairlines.com I 47

is a flagship store and offers an overwhelming variety of luxury goods—all, as the name implies, duty free. Upon entering the building, a circular area of cosmetics, fragrances, treats, and premium spirits greets the guest. This is a good place to get stocked with makeup and scents like Anna Sui, Chanel, Clinique, Givenchy, Lancôme, and M.A.C. Further in, boutiques line the promenade of two wide walkways, which bustle with shoppers moving in and out of designers such as Burberry, Ralph Lauren, Fendi, Hermès, Loewe, Prada, Dior, and many more. Across the street, The Plaza pokes out from the Outrigger Guam Resort and hugs Pale San Vitores Road with large colorful storefronts. High-end designers and boutiques are represented in this multileveled shopping center, with Coach and Gucci taking up two floors in their respective boutiques. The corridors of The Plaza are lined with just such designers, including DNA Evolution and Stussy Guam, plus a wide range of others that over the years have carved out their own niche in the fashion world: LeSportsac, Gap, Folli Follie, Cole Haan, and Marc Jacobs. The Plaza also has several eateries, with The Hard Rock Café and The Sea Grill being only the largest. Many smaller, less well-known brands also have 56 I Mabuhay Magazine I September 2013

boutiques and storefronts located throughout the store, so there is a great opportunity for some exploration and discovery. Guam’s malls Beyond Tumon To the south of Tumon, in Hagåtña, The Agana Shopping Center and its surroundings have more of a local flavor, which is reflected, in the variety of stores. Many local shop owners have retail space here and sell all kinds of interesting items, which when mixed with well-known U.S. and international retailers make for an interesting shopping experience. When hungry, restaurant options include Italian eatery Capricciosa, American favorite Tony Roma’s, and others, as well as a Payless Grocery store, Guam’s largest grocery chain. The Agana Shopping Center’s convenient location and close proximity to sightseeing opportunities in Hagåtña make it a popular pick. Closer to Tumon is the village of Tamuning, where the bustling shopping center known as Guam Premier Outlets attracts visitors, locals and other businesses alike. This always-busy mall is full of stores selling goods at outlet prices, and when combined with Guam’s already duty-free retail shopping, there are some great savings to be had here. Along with the major

retailers that sell clothing, jewelry, books, electronics, and health and beauty products at excellent values are specialty kiosks and shops that offer one-of-a-kind merchandise. The Micronesia Mall in the village of Dededo is close to the north end of Tumon and is definitely worth the trip. The Funtastic Park is a miniature amusement park located on the second floor of the mall, abounding with bumper cars, arcades, and even a mini rollercoaster! Next door is the Fiesta food court and over 20 food and beverage outlets. This mall has a broad spectrum of retailers and is an excellent place for buying gifts and souvenirs, as well as clothing, jewelry, and beauty supplies available for all budgets. If you want it, Guam probably has it. Yet beyond the modern are the arts, crafts, and locally made products that are available throughout the island and speak directly of the island traditions. You can find that too, so long as you are ready for a little adventure. n

ISLAND LIFE

A SENSE OF PLACE: The richness of Balinese culture and Hinduism can be seen in the Taman Ayun Temple (LEFT) and in the local statues (RIGHT).

BALI FOR BEGINNERS

B

ali has been romanticized so much that it’s almost impossible for firsttime travelers not to have any high expectations going in. The wonderful, and perhaps peculiar, thing about the place is it will both meet and not meet those expectations. This Indonesian island is a tropical paradise most famous for its beaches, local art, culture, and religion. It doesn’t have the same kind of grandeur and vaunted history of other destinations in neighboring Southeast Asian countries like Thailand and Cambodia. That’s just fine. This lack of scale and scope may be Bali’s best and biggest asset. In Bali everything is within easy reach. Its most popular beach, Kuta, is just 15 minutes away from the airport in the provincial capital of Denpasar. The art enclave of Ubud is a nice one-and-a-half-hour drive away. From there it’s only another 45 minutes to the Tanah Lot pilgrimage temple. And this is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg. The 5-kilometer Kuta Beach is said to be Bali’s best surfing spot. But it’s not only the surfboard-wielding and beachcombing locals and foreigners who have claimed

its fine, off-white sand and clean, light-green waters as their sanctuary by the sea. Everybody and everything else seems to converge in the area. And why not? Not only does it sit right next to the airport, it is also the most developed and commercialized spot in all of Bali. The immediate area surrounding Kuta Beach is teeming with hotels big and small, from modest inns to five-star accommodations. There is also a shopping center nearby. Kuta easily merges into Seminyak, another popular commercial district that offers even more shopping, dining, and entertainment options. It’s so near, in fact, that anyone can just keep walking from Kuta and unknowingly find himself in Seminyak. This area is perhaps best known for its row of bars that come alive at night until the wee hours of morning. A different kind of experience awaits travelers in Ubud, which has been immortalized in the Julia Roberts movie Eat Pray Love. This suburb is Bali’s art capital and offers a quieter, more quaint, and more soulful time. It is composed of several small villages that provide travelers more than a peek

into Balinese art—small- to medium-size shops that sell anything from clothes and paintings, to silver accessories and other metalware, to wood carvings and paper-made products, and everything in between. Travelers exploring Ubud may consider checking out the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. This jungle attraction is home to several holy temples and is a sanctuary for a band of gray-haired long-tailed Balinese macaques. Ubud is also home to some of Bali’s most scenic rice terraces. Although incomparable to the breadth, width, and height of those in the Philippine Cordilleras, the sun-kissed rice paddies of Bali, like most of the island’s attractions, are winsome because of their accessibility. Visitors can easily opt to explore the fields on foot, breaking sweat not so much from the effort of climbing up and down and going around as from the heat of the sun, which makes the experience more immediate, more visceral, and more memorable than just viewing from a distance. The same kind of engagement can be experienced in many of Bali’s temples, including the ones in Taman Ayun outside of Ubud. Because they are not the imposing-monuments-of-stone types, they look and feel more real, more living, and less like

they’re from a very long-ago time and place than their counterparts in neighboring countries. It is perhaps this same appeal that makes Tanah Lot one of the most visited places in Bali. This 15th-century-era temple sits on an offshore rock formation that is connected to a cliff overlooking part of the southern coast. To reach the temple, visitors take a leisurely stroll through a sprawling garden and promenade. The view is stunning especially at sunset. More adventurous guests can explore both ends of the cliff range and walk down the shore up until the waterfall on the rightmost edge, which is not officially part of the area’s attraction and is not readily visible to rather casual visitors. More discerning travelers who want to avoid the madding crowd have the option of staying in Bali’s more upscale nooks. These include the gated Nusa Dua, which offers a host of water-based activities, and the Uluwatu area that offers more spectacular cliff-side views of the Indian Ocean. Wherever one chooses to stay and whatever places to explore in Bali, one thing is certain: a trip to the island will confound expectations of firsttime travelers and continue to hold more surprises for frequent visitors. That’s the Bali charm. n

ALL A-BOARD IN CORON

S

tand-up paddleboarding is probably the next best way to explore some of the Philippines’ uniquely gorgeous destinations. It is a versatile water sport that can take you from surfing big or small waves, to strolling the water, to exploring hidden pockets of paradise and secret coves of an island, a lake, or a river. The Philippines, like many Pacific island-nations, has a strong ancient canoeing culture that’s still very evident today. You can see this through local fishermen going out to sea aboard their very small fishing boats, or through people using outrigger boats to ferry themselves to nearby islands or to cross rivers. Paddleboarding somehow awakens that primal knowledge inherent in every person of the water. Stand-up paddle boarding—

also called stand-up paddling, paddle-boarding, or SUPing—offers a balance of life in the outdoors while keeping you fit and in tune with yourself. On an SUP, awe, fulfillment, and being at the present moment with nature will be your greatest rewards. SUP Tours Philippines is the leading paddleboard tour company that will take you to various island destinations in the country. They have crafted tours and packages for those who wish to take their holiday on a whole new level, and are the first to offer Coron Island for paddleboarding exploration in an allinclusive deal. The towering limestone cliffs and secret coves can be explored up close and in solitude, away from other tourists crowding up one particular spot. The first day of the SUP tour begins with taking

a boat to Siete Pecados, a coral sanctuary on the southern coast of the main island of Busuanga, just off the northern coast of Coron Island. Snorkeling around these tiny islands would already give a glimpse of what to expect on the whole trip. The next destination is Bulungan Beach, located on the northern point of Coron Island. The paddleboarding start-off point is from here and then proceeds southwest to Calachuchi Reef. A lunch of the freshest catch of the day—crustaceans, grilled pork or chicken, veggie salad, seaweed salad, and fruits—is served here. Vegetarian meals are also available upon request. After lunch, the paddling continues toward the entrance of turquoisecolored waters of Kayangan Lake, considered one of the cleanest in the Philippines. You would have to climb up the cliffs to get to the lake, and when you reach it snorkeling is strongly advised (SUPs will be left waiting at the boat). After Kayangan Lake, the paddling reaches its finale down to Barracuda Lake. The second day of the tour starts at CYC Beach, a small island with white-sand beach. Afterwards, you’ll go to Banol Beach, another white-sand beach located in Coron Island where guests can also warm up with

the SUPs around this cove while waiting for lunch to be served. After lunch, the SUP tour continues to Atwayan Beach then to the breathtaking and limestonesurrounded Twin Lagoons. A small crevice in the wall connects the two lagoons and guests can either swim under or climb the wall to get to the next lagoon. After SUPing in Twin Lagoons, the group proceeds to Sunset Lagoon for a final cap to this amazing SUP tour. The SUP tours are flexible and can be customized to include other places around Coron Island. Different packages allow free days for activities apart from paddleboarding. Coron is a diver’s paradise, which makes it an ideal place to get a dive certificate and to marvel at the magnificence of its underwater life and Japanese World War II shipwrecks. Aside from Coron, SUP Tours Philippines’ other destinations include Dumaguete, Cebu, and Bohol. In Dumaguete, their package will take you to SUP on two lakes, paddle the white sand bars of Manjuyod and Sumilon, and see the dolphins and the whale sharks in Oslob. In Bohol, packages and daily tours involve SUPing the island’s two beautiful rivers: Loboc and Abatan. Night SUPing is also offered in Bohol. n

outhern Mindanao’s General Santos City (GenSan) has not been touted a highly urbanized, rapidly growing city for nothing. As gateway to the culture and economic developments of the South Central Mindanao region, GenSan maintained its moniker of being the “Tuna Capital of the Philippines” and continues to establish itself as the regional center of trade and industry, now accessible by sea (Makar Wharf is an international sea port and one of the finest in the country) and air (the new General Santos International Airport has the biggest airport facility in Mindanao). Now at par with other Philippine metropolises in terms of state-of-theart facilities and modern infrastructure, GenSan moves up to become a hub for culture, business, and leisure, and a

As the 2013 Tuna Festival is scheduled on September 5–9, the tuna fishing industry is given a boost with highlights such as the Tuna Float Parade and Streetdancing Competition (www. gensantos.com), indicating that GenSan still dominates the tuna trade and commerce that launched its other moniker: “Boomtown City of the South.” The General Santos City Fish Port Complex is quite a tourist attraction in itself, with its advanced postharvest technology and storage facilities. nce upon a time there lived a princess. She was a very tall, lovely girl, with dark eyes and dark hair. She had all the clothes and jewels her heart could wish for. Many suitors wanted to marry her but she was never happy. Every day she sat along the river bank crying and sighing as if her heart was breaking. Her mother asked her about her situation. However, she only shook her head mournfully. One day, she sat weeping by the river. A fairy appeared before her asking, ”Who are you? Why do you sit day after day beside my river house and weep and weep salt tears into it?” Now the hair of the fairy is tangled up. Still the princess never said a word. The fairy asked her again and again but the princess shook her head mournfully began to sigh and weep again. The fairy became very angry. She raised her hand over the princess’ head and said, “May you sigh and sigh until the seas run dry!” As she said this, the princess turned into a leafy bamboo tree—tall and slender. It stood by the river side. Its leaves hang over the cool water sighing when the wind passes by. n

TOP ATTRACTIONS

JUMP INTO IT: Located in Mount Isarog National Park, Malabsay Falls is a favorite weekend destination of locals for picnic and a cool, refreshing dip.

Naga City Charms

N

aga City has always been a source of fascination—from the gentle way the locals speak their language to the rapt devotion of its people to its tasty edibles. There are three fun things one can do on a weekend visit to Naga: explore the city center, including its numerous churches; enjoy its spring resorts; and hike up Mount Isarog. Of course, all of these involve sampling the city’s tasty dishes. CITY RHYTHM Naga City is a mix of the old and new. Founded in 1575 by the Spanish, this Pilgrim City is home to the well-loved Our Lady of Peñafrancia, an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary that many believe to be miraculous. Every September, thousands of devotees from all over the country (and the world) troop to the city to take part in the fluvial procession and novenas dedicated to the Lady of Peñafrancia.

Religious fervor and devotion among the Nagueños are quite evident in the presence of so many churches within the city. A leisurely stroll around the city will have you passing by several churches, including Saint Francis Church, Saint John the Evangelist, Our Lady of Peñafrancia, Daughters of Mary Mother of the Church, Naga Metropolitan Cathedral, Peñafrancia Shrine, and the Peñafrancia Basilica Minore, to name a few. Don’t be surprised, however, if you also see other religious representations—a Sikh temple, a Taoist temple, and a mosque— coexisting peacefully among devout Catholics. Peeking out from among the contemporary malls and supermarkets are decades-old ancestral houses that give visitors a glimpse of what the place must have looked like in the old days. When in Naga, try to visit the wet market for this is where you will see real life unfolding. Here you’ll get to see brightly colored, shiny chilies that Bicol is

Dotting the market’s perimeter are souvenir and pasalubong stalls selling Bicol’s pride—pili nuts in all its sweet and salty variations. COOL TREATS The city can be as noisy as any other in the country, so why not head to Naga City’s spring resorts. At the Peñafrancia Resort, a 20-minute drive from the city to the town of Carolina, one has access to huge swimming pools and spacious, pili tree-dotted green lawns. Popular among families and convention participants, this resort is worth checking out. A further 15-minute drive away, meanwhile, is Casa Ofelia, which boasts a spring that runs from Mount Isarog along its property. Visitors can opt to swim in its whimsically themed pools peppered with giant, colorful mushrooms. Those looking for some hot bath can always go to the Panicuason Hot Springs, located in Panicuason, the town next to Carolina. Guests delight in dipping into the cold spring and then the whot sulfuric spring, believed to have several health benefits. For a bit of adventure, one can try its zipline, a high-rope tension bridge 30-feet above the ground, or wall climbing.

MOUNT ISAROG’S TRAILS Getting to Mount Isarog is easy; navigating its trails, though, can be a challenge for some. About an hour of jeepney and tricycle commute from Naga City, one needs to walk toward the Mount Isarog National Park through a rocky trail, the last stretch of which offers a sweeping view of the mountain and the plains below. Regular weekend visitors usually comprise of locals who would carry their picnic food down to Malabsay, a waterfall near the entrance of the park. Another, the Nabontolan, is located further high up, and reaching it could be a challenging trek for many. According to Isarog rangers, there are three trails up the mountain—one going to Nabontolan Falls, another going to Calabanga town on the other side of the mountain, and the last one going up the peak. If you just want to see Nabontolan Falls, better get a guide or you might just end up reaching the peak without you knowing it. Oh, there’s one other important thing—Mount Isarog is crawling with limatik (leeches) at certain months of the year. They’re pretty harmless and would only suck until they fall off you when they’re full. But you might want to avoid them getting into your eyes or nose or ears. Just saying... Otherwise, just enjoy the cold waters of Malabsay Falls. Either way, you’ll have a memorable time. n

ISLAND LIFE

YOURS FOR A WEEKEND: Pinagkastilyuhan Island’s draw are its virgin beach and rolling hills where campers can take in the view of the nearby islands.

CALAGUAS ECOTOURS: FINDING PARADISE

I

f you’re like me, you nurture the dream of claiming a deserted island as your own. You want to trade the noise of the city for the symphony of crickets or the sound of waves on the shore, highrises for mountains, pollution and dust for clear, starry skies. Far from Manila? Good. No electricity? Perfect. No cellphone signal? Hmmm. When do we leave? But again, if you’re like me, your idea of getting away from it all isn’t being a castaway on Survivor. Nevertheless, with the promise of finding paradise or something like it, I found myself with some friends headed for the Calaguas Group of Islands in Camarines Norte for glamping— “pampered camping,” as doctor-turned-artist Joaquin Palencia of Calaguas Ecotours calls it. The islands lie off the Pacific coast of Camarines Norte in the Bicol region, southeast of Manila. To get there, you fly to Naga City, take a 72 I Mabuhay Magazine I September 2013

two-hour bus trip to the town of Vinzons, and make your way to Port Logpond to begin your adventure. Alternately, Calaguas Ecotours can arrange pickup service from the airport or the bus terminal. From the port, the boat ride to the islands takes about two hours. Anyone who’s been stuck in Manila traffic for two hours knows what an agonizing experience it can be. But on that boat, my only frustration was being unable to capture with my camera what I felt. My eyes feasted on the different shades of blue of the sea—here, a sparkling blue-green; there, the deep and enigmatic blue of Krishna. The fresh air filled my starved lungs and the gentle rocking of the boat lulled me to sleep. As our boat approached a small island called Pinagkastilyuhan, we were greeted by the sight of tents lined up in a row, and smiling waitstaff ready to attend to us. Fresh towels and cool drinks made for a refreshing welcome, and then we were shown to our tents.

BAREFOOT LUXURY: Though you’ll be cast away in Mahabang Buhangin Beach (LEFT), you can still have indulgent treats like a sumptuous spread of seafood and even cool refreshments (RIGHT).

It was clear that Calaguas Ecotours pulls out all the stops for its guests. At every meal, we oohed and aahed at the feast spread out before us: heaping portions of succulent seafood, tasty meats, fruits, bread, cheese, and even specially prepared vegetarian dishes, all courtesy of a professional chef. But what’s a trip to the Calaguas islands without island hopping? Beside Pinagkastilyuhan is the island of Bendita, where guests can trek up a hill and take in the view of the sea and the other islands. Calaguas Ecotours sometimes sets up breakfast at Bendita, while the tide is low and you can walk across the sand. A short boat ride away, Tinaga Island’s Mahabang Buhangin beach rivals Boracay’s powdery white sand. Indeed, these islands are what Boracay must have been like in the 1960s and 1970s—before she got all dolled up and fancy. Joaquin and his brothers Raul, Philip, and Bong started Calaguas Ecotours some six years ago, when they first brought friends to the islands. At the time, the islands were largely forgotten. Joaquin says: “If you Googled ‘Calaguas’ six years ago, all you’d see would be ‘Calaguas’ as a family name.” It was their love of the outdoors that made them want to share these islands with others. More than

just commerce and tourism, the Palencias—a family of doctors whose late patriarch, Dr. Abundio Palencia Sr., put up a hospital and a school in Daet—have something better in mind. Listening to them talk with such passion about the islands and their province, it’s obvious that the brothers have inherited the elder Palencia’s sense of service and pride of place. “We’re from Camarines Norte,” says Philip, “so we’d like to help develop this place.” These days, the Calaguas Group of Islands enjoys visits from backpackers, campers—and thanks to Calaguas Ecotours—from “pampered campers.” Nightlife here consists of a candlelit dinner and a bonfire on the beach. Gadgets turn into paperweights, deadlines lose their power, and stress fades into memory. That night, I felt the sand beneath my sleeping bag, and for the first time in a long time, I rested in Mother Nature’s embrace. The following day, we reluctantly boarded the boat that would take us back to Port Logpond. I knew I would never look at a map of the Philippines in the same way, because out of our 7,107 islands, I had made one of them mine for a day. n

The Art of Sharing Street artists Herakut (a combination of their names, Hera and Akut) visited Manila to share their art and ideas at forums, live painting sessions with local artists Anjo Bolardo and Rai Cruz, and an exhibit entitled Beauty is a Sanctuary. Their impressive portfolio includes mural, canvases, and books on hyper-realism, all telling emotional stories in vivid colors. Their biggest work may just be The Giant Storybook Project, which chronicles two children’s journey along with some giants, monkeys, chameleons, and other fantastical images, all painted in cities all across the world. The artists’ styles and artistic approach couldn’t be any more different. Akut’s self-taught photorealistic spray painting takes a good amount of preparation, while Hera lets the atmosphere of the moment influence her take on a piece. And yet, their combined efforts bring about captivating works with stunning details. You can view the mural they painted during their visit in the design section of Fully Booked, Bonifacio High Street, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City.

LAST FRAME

A TOUCH OF FAITH (January 2011)

Thousands of devotees gather in Quiapo, Manila, every January 9 to express their faith to the Black Nazarene. It’s impossible to move around when there is practically no space separating you from another person. Despite the huge crowd, there’s no stopping the devotees from catching a glimpse of the Black Nazarene. For some, dabbing their handkerchief on the Black Nazarene is good enough. It’s this precise moment that Jomar Galvez catches a devotee handing to another devotee his handkerchief just to touch the Black Nazarene for a renewed faith. www.jomargalvez.com

ASIA’S FIRST AIRLINE

Philippine Airlines—Asia’s first airline—is the flag carrier of the Republic of the Philippines and the pioneer airline of the country, with a 72-year history steeped in tradition and modernity. PAL first took to the skies on March 15, 1941, with a small twin-engine Beech Model 18 airplane flying 212 kilometers from Makati, near Manila, to Baguio in the northern Philippines, carrying a full load of five passengers. Upon the outbreak of World War II on December 8, 1941, PAL’s two Beech 18s were pressed into military service, flying missions to evacuate American pilots to Australia. Both were destroyed in battle. Post-war operations resumed on February 14, 1946. On July 31, 1946, a PAL-chartered DC-4 took off from Makati carrying American servicemen home to Oakland, California. The 41-hour journey across the Pacific, with stops in Guam, Wake, Kwajalein, and Honolulu, made PAL the first Asian airline to cross the vast ocean. On May 3, 1947, PAL opened a route to Rome and Madrid, later extended to London, becoming the first Southeast Asian airline to fly to Europe. Over the next three decades, its international route network ranged from Asia to Australia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America, establishing PAL as one of the world’s leading carriers of that era. PAL keeps in step with advancements in aircraft technology, regularly acquiring the latest aircraft to maintain a young, modern fleet. From DC-3s that served as its workhorse in the 1940s and 1950s, Vicker Viscount turbo-props and Fokker F-27s were added to the fleet in the 1960s. In 1966, BAC 1-11 aircraft introduced pure-jet service in the domestic sector and in 1974, the McDonnell Douglas DC-10— PAL’s first wide-body aircraft—went into service on the trans-Pacific route. It was succeeded as PAL’s flagship in 1979 by the Boeing

747-200, which featured “Skybeds” paired with First Class seats on its upper deck—a first in the industry. Upgrades to the long-range fleet included the Boeing 747-400 in 1993, the Airbus 340-300 in 1997, and the Boeing 777-300ER in 2009. On April 20, 2012, PAL welcomed a strategic investor into the company—San Miguel Corporation, the Philippines’ largest conglomerate, significantly boosting the flag carrier’s immediate and long-term prospects. Recharged, PAL embarked on a bold growth strategy anchored on fleet modernization, network expansion, and service innovations. On August 28, 2012, it placed a firm order for 54 new-generation Airbus aircraft comprising 44 short-range A321-200 and 10 long-range A330-300 High Gross Weight jets—the largest single aircraft purchase in Philippine aviation history. The following month, ten more A300-300 HGW aircraft were added to the order. Deliveries commenced in August 2013 and will continue until 2019. Complementing the new equipment, PAL has unveiled a brisk network expansion for 2013, covering 11 new destinations across Asia, Australia, and the Middle East, plus one domestic point. These are Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Guangzhou, China; Darwin, Brisbane, and Perth in Australia; Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates; Doha, Qatar; Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam in Saudi Arabia; and Basco, Batanes, in the Philippines. PAL is also planning a return to Europe before the end of 2013, with London, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Rome, and Madrid as probable destinations. In its eighth decade, with a new investor on board and a bold vision to chart its path, Philippine Airlines can look back at a proud legacy of service to the nation and beyond to a future where it will soar once more as a major global network carrier. n

Famous Filipino dishes include lechón (whole roasted pig), longganisa (Philippine sausage), tapa (cured beef), torta (omelette), adobo (chicken and/ or pork braised in garlic, vinegar, oil, and soy sauce), kaldereta (meat stewed in tomato sauce), mechado (larded beef in soy and tomato sauce), puchero (beef and plantains in tomato sauce), afritada (chicken and/or pork with vegetables simmered in tomato sauce), kare-kare (oxtail and vegetables cooked in peanut sauce), crispy pata (deepfried pig’s leg), hamonado (pork braised in pineapple sauce), sinigang (meat or seafood in sour broth), pancit (noodles), and lumpia (fresh or fried spring rolls). n
