PAL PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

February Highlights February is another busy period in the travel calendar. Wherever your destination, whether it’s in search of warmer temperatures, or whether you’re just looking for an escape from the harried holiday season, allow me to reaffirm our commitment to provide you both comfort and convenience whenever you fly Philippine Airlines. Our promotional fares for the month are a welcome treat for those traveling to PAL domestic or international destinations, while our inflight offerings in our long-haul flights, highlighted by new enticing menus, promise to make your travel experience a memorable one. Here in our home market, one February highlight is the 66th PAL Interclub Golf Tournament 2013 scheduled on February 21-24 (Senior’s Division) and February 27-March 2 (Men’s Regular Division) in Cebu. The country’s oldest, largest, and most prestigious golfing competition will see the participation of 1,500 golfers from across the country and overseas. To all golf participants on board, allow me to extend to each of you a very warm welcome. On the corporate front, there’s been no let-up in our drive to recruit the best and the brightest cabin crew to serve on our flights. PAL’s recruitment efforts will continue, this time in Mindanao, with job fairs this month in Davao and next month in Cagayan de Oro. Our job fairs in Manila and the Visayas last year brought in hundreds of applicants from which we’ve selected several dozen who we are now training to be able to provide the gracious and attentive service that we want our airline to be famous for. Continuing fleet modernization, service innovation and network expansion remain the cornerstone of our growth strategy. After opening the Toronto, Canada gateway just before the close of 2012, we’re gearing up for yet another long-haul destination within the first quarter of the year. Our next target is Darwin, the capital city of Australia’s Northern Territory. From being a pioneer outpost and small port, Darwin is today one of Australia’s most modern and multicultural cities and its proximity to Asia makes it an important Australian gateway to countries such as Indonesia, East Timor, and of course, the Philippines. Once again, thank you for flying Asia’s first airline. We look forward to welcoming you again soon on one of our flights. Mabuhay!

EDITOR’S NOTE

Baguio Mountain High here’s no better time than now to visit Baguio, the Philippines’ summer and honeymoon capital. It’s the season when the city is at its coldest (still averaging a pleasant 20 degrees centigrade), strawberries are being harvested, and flowers are in full bloom. To celebrate this, there’s the “Panagbenga,” a month-long vibrant flower festival, culminating in a grand parade on February 24. The good old stuff that drew you to Baguio in the first place is alive and well. Their public market is still clean and full of the things you crave for: fresh vegetables, strawberries, and different varieties of mountain rice. Popular products are bottled organic jam and fruit preserves, and colorful local brooms. Try the oranges from Sagada—large and lusciously sweet. Restaurants retaining the rustic character of Baguio are thriving, such as Café by the Ruins and Hilltop at Casa Vallejo. For something new, our contributor Lissa Romero-de Guia tips us about a cluster of restaurants called Ketchup beside Wright Park. Also worth checking out is Villa Cordillera for its beautifulviews. Art is also flourishing. There’s a new community art space, VOCAS, at Session Road. Over at the Bencab Museum, a constant flow of daily visitors continue to arrive—especially after the influential website, TripAdvisor.com, awarded it with a certificate of excellence. Outside the museum, National Artist Bencab has been busy transforming the surroundings as though it’s a canvas, with plants, The Bell House was named after Gen. J. Franklin Bell, who was responsible for making Camp John Hay into a major military flowers, wild grass, trees, R&R destination in the early 1900s. Photos by Dakila Angeles and a meandering creek. It’s certainly beginning to look like a masterpiece. It was nice to tour the museum with his daughter, Jasmine, and her close friend, Tamm Arvisu, who also contributed to this issue. There are two new places to stay at Camp John Hay: Forest Lodge beside the Manor Hotel and Le Monet, a modernistic boutique hotel near the new gate. Visitors should drop by the Bell Museum, with its nostalgic architecture and memorabilia. It’s close to the amphitheater where I caught a romantic garden wedding taking place, catered by my friend and owner of Hilltop restaurant, Mitos Benitez Yniguez. It’s so nice to see Mitos still busy doing what she loves, making money, and having fun. VOCAS (Victor Oteyza Community Art Space) is home to whimsical art pieces and healthy vegetarian fare.

So there you are—more great reasons to trip to Baguio. The mountain city is reviving its rustic highland character, spurred on by the people who love it.

BAGUIO’S FINEST

The Philippines’ summer capital continues to enthrall visitors with its diverse and cool attractions ranging from new food-tripping venues to pine-covered forests. Photo by Dakila Angeles We, at Philippine Airlines, are happy to have you on board. Please sit back and relax, and allow us to make your flight enjoyable. For your own safety and convenience, please observe the regulations listed on the back pages. “Mabuhay” is a Filipino verb in the form of a command: “Live!” It is also a wish: “May you live!” Whoever says it wishes you the great gift of a long and full life. It is both a blessing and a lusty cheer. “Mabuhay” (ma-boo-high) is such a large word that it lends itself to a wide number of secondary uses: Welcome, Congratulations, Thanks, Godspeed, Hello, Good Luck, Cheers, Posit, Sante, Viva, Kambei, Aloha, and many other expressions of goodwill. All these are a part of life, but it is the gift of life that makes them possible. “Mabuhay,” in other words, is an invocation and a celebration of life itself.

a taste of Down under in Cebu Have you ever thought of what characterizes Australian cuisine? Well, head down to Cebu to Australian chef Steve Shrimski’s restaurant, Canvas. It’s located at Ayala Terraces and is as unpretentious as can be—cement finish walls and floors, modern furniture, an open kitchen, and an airy atmosphere that exudes “relaxed bistro” instead of fine dining. The food that he whips up is pretty much the creative soul of Australasia. Jetting across continents since the 1980s, Chef Shrimski and his Filipina wife’s experience has produced a symphony of culinary brilliance. Canvas offers cuisine with a solid Aussie backbone, using meat and exotic game as his palette, with hints of Asian flavor. – Michelle Varron

The Russian-inspired Imperial Ice Bar, located at the Fort Strip, is divided into two parts: the main lounge and the ice room. The main lounge features a state-of-the-art sound system and some of Manila’s top DJs playing daily. The Ice Room being the only authentic ice bar in the country has an average temperature of -5 degrees Celsius with everything in its interior, from the bar, to the tables and seats, the décor and even the shot glasses made out of ice. Not only is the bar great for photos, but it also serves premium Imperial Russian Vodka fruit-infused drinks specially concocted by New York star mixologist David Dennis. It’s an experience that can definitely make you forget that you’re in a tropical country like the Philippines.

THE PHILIPPINES OWNS 2013 IN TWO TRAVEL MAGAZINES

Two prestigious travel magazines named the country one of the best travel destinations for 2013, and why shouldn’t they when we’ve always had some of the world’s most gorgeous beaches? UK-based Condé Nast Traveller ranked the Philippines second in its “Top 10 Destinations to Watch in 2013,” with the country cited for having “around 7,000 of the most heavenly islands in the world.” American magazine Travel + Leisure, meanwhile, named the country one of the “Hottest Travel Destinations of 2013,” with world-renowned Boracay receiving a special mention.

COUNTRY OF SMILES The Philippines ranked fourth in the “10 Happiest Countries in the World,” according to a survey conducted by Washington, DC–based think tank Gallup. FILIPINA BEAUTIES REIGN Filipina beauty queens are taking over the global stage! Twenty-three-yearold licensed pharmacist Janine Tugonon snagged first runner-up in the recent Miss Universe pageant held in Las Vegas, Nevada, while 22-year-old nurse Rizzini Alexis Gomez was crowned 2012 Miss Tourism International held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. TOURISTS LEFT CHARMED With gorgeous beaches, hospitable

locals, and festivals held almost every day, who can blame tourists for being wooed to stay? More foreign tourists are extending their vacation in the Philippines, according to the Bureau of Immigration. In 2012, the bureau’s visa extension office was flooded with 172,055 applications for extension of stay by foreign tourists, all of which are approved. PHILIPPINE STOCK MARKET STILL SOARING It’s a good start of the year for the Philippine stock market! For the first time ever, the Philippine Stock Exchange Composite Index (PSEi) surpassed the 6,000 level, scoring a new milestone and taking many by surprise. Brokers celebrated as the PSEi index soared 73.46 points or 1.23 percent to close at 6,044.91.

The Filipino Generosity The Philippines is certainly on a roll! UK-based foundation Charities Aid Foundation has included the Philippines among the top five nations in the world devoting the most amount of time to charity work, with the country having the largest number of people in Southeast Asia volunteering their time.

A TIME FOR LUXURY

Legendary jeweler Harry Winston showcases his fine craftsmanship in his latest work of art, the Opus 12. eople love creating memories. Every first is a milestone waiting to be immortalized and every big leap always grants us reason to celebrate. Although we can never turn the days around, giving the gift of time is usually enough to mark that special moment. And, in our generation, we are lucky to have been graced by the choice of turning to a Harry Winston masterpiece. With only 20 years into the business, Harry Winston, which began in 1989, has already established its name and grandeur amongst oldtime favorites. Competing with luxury watches such as Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet and Cartier, the company’s success secret lies in maintaining the Harry Winston name: “remain true to the spirit of the brand,“ as their credo would say. Harry Winston has placed its watchmaking division squarely in the tradition of its legendary jewelry expertise, being synonymous with authentic and rare luxury in the design and manufacture of complicated and gem-set watches. Setting up a state-of-the-art manufacture in Geneva served as a boost to the brand—seemingly announcing to the world that, indeed, Harry Winston timepieces are here to stay. Innovation and imagination are Harry Winston’s leitmotifs, from the New York-inspired Avenue watch collection to the gem-set Harry Winston Rosebud, from the sporty Ocean to the avant-garde Project Z, Opus, and

Histoire de Tourbillon platforms. The Harry Winston Manufacture secured the expertise of the best craftsmen, engineers and master watchmakers. The latest timepiece from the Opus series was highly anticipated by enthusiasts and collectors globally, since it featured new technologies and exceptional handiwork that redefined the face of the watchmaking industry. This exceptional timepiece deliberately overturns the perception of time by drawing its inspiration from the Copernican revolution according to which the earth rotates around the sun and around itself. Time no longer reads via a pair of hands positioned in the center of the dial, but by the peripheral drive of twelve pairs of hands going from the circumference to the center. Truly, Opus 12 was an innovation like no other. Harry Winston’s commitment to quality and to fine craftsmanship, and in keeping with the finest traditions of Haute Horlogerie, remains to be the unmistakable signature of a rare degree of legitimacy in the field of jewelry making. A legitimacy that is well ahead of its time, their watchmaking creativity and ingenuity, which is directed towards a promising future without limitations or compromises, is one to literally watch out for in the years to come. n Harry Winston is located at the G/F Greenbelt 5, Ayala Center, Makati.

Did you know? Harry Winston was the first jeweler to adorn celebrities walking the red carpet in 1943’s Academy Awards. To date, A-listers such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna, and Sandra Bullock wear the brand.

sENsE & sENsIBILITY

StreetSmart Safety NYX MARTINEZ lists simple ways to avoid getting scammed while on a holiday.

S

o you think you’ve traveled a fair bit, kept your personal items intact, and managed to not “look like a tourist”? Chances are, so did everyone else who’s been scammed. Here are some common travel traps to steer clear of. 1. LEwd TAXI dRIvERs If a driver ever tells you to “go first, pay later,” or “It’s up to you how much,” go find another cab. And always carry loose change. Some drivers will insist they do not have change for you, so you’re forced to overpay. Ada recalls riding on the back of a motorcycle to the bus station in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, after haggling the cost. “Halfway through, the driver went into side streets, pretended not to know where the bus station was, and started asking me for more money, saying it was farther than he remembered,” she says. “I threatened to go to the tourist police and made sure to cause a big raucous on the street.” Thankfully, after making a scene, Ada was dropped safely at the bus station.

36 I Mabuhay Magazine I February 2013

2. BAggAgE HANdLERs ANd FIXERs Lemuel says he had a bad experience with taxi dispatcher ladies in Taiwan’s Chiayi Railway Station. “They offered a taxi ride to Alishan for just NT$150 (US$5), which I thought was kind of shady because the bus is normally NT$200 ($6.90). These ladies were very persistent, trying to lead us away from the bus ticketing office.” When in doubt, don’t fall for a seemingly easy way out. Always look out for proper signs where to get taxis. At Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport, go straight to the airport taxi booth. Though the rate is fixed and a bit more costly, your safety is secured. 3. MoNEY CHANgERs “Always ask for the computation, net of commission, taxes, and other charges,” says Manny, who was traveling in Bali. “The money changer I went to posted the best rates around, so I went in and asked for a computation. After giving me the rupiahs, they counted it again and deducted their commission. In the end, I paid more than what I was supposed to.” Fellow traveler Hazel never expected to get ripped off in Disneyland. “They played a trick on me and my companion on my first trip abroad,” Hazel recalls, “The woman there charged us with taxes that were on top of the exchange rate fee, then gave us candies, saying she didn’t have loose change.”

MORE TIPS... common mistakes on the roaD • Looking or acting like a tourist. • Blend in by dressing wisely: casual and never to stand out or to attract attention. • Displaying (flaunting!) your valuables. common traVel traps Anywhere with crowds, but beware of fancy restaurants too, with the smartlooking couple who may randomly sit down beside you, then leave with your bag. Always have your guard up, but take care especially in the following places:

4. Double the Drinks You’ve probably heard of men falling for the trap of the invitation to have company in a bar, only to end up paying three times the amount for the woman’s drink. This is often the unsaid rule in many nightclubs that hire ladies to “entertain” patrons. Even if you don’t take one of them home, you’re expected to pay for their expensive drinks. This can happen to women travelers, too. In Bangkok, Sheila and her girlfriends were told that the cost was 100 baht ($3) for one drink. “But we ended up being billed for a total of 4,700 baht ($158) for just 4 beers!” she says. n

• Concerts • Street festivals • Bazaars and outdoor markets • Mall sales • Public buses (Particularly the closed air-conditioned ones. On long-haul buses, when you are likely to fall asleep, make sure your bags are secured.)

Style

Dressing for a Date: animal instincts The animal kingdom’s creative species often put on a visual display for the opposite sex—similar to us humans, who also use clothing to entice. What tricks of the trade can we learn from the planet’s other inhabitants? giancarla eSpinoSa aritao has some suggestions. SeahorSeS hug their mateS with their tailS. Opt for clothes that feel good to the touch, especially when someone leans in for an embrace. Silk and chiffon are constant favorites, but feel free to play with other textures. Even though wool is not thought of as romantic, its soft fuzz can be very appealing. Cotton, a commoner among textiles, can be considered romantic as long as it is kept fresh and airy. the blue-colored Satin bowerbird buildS a neSt from blue materialS to attract a mate. Certain colors recur in romantic styles: blush, light gray, and hints of blue are particular favorites. These romantic hues are easy on the eye, and great for long, lingering looks. Pastels are classics. Deep colors, such as burgundy or black, should be used sparingly, only to accent the rest of the palette. 42 I Mabuhay Magazine I February 2013

the peacock diSplayS itS irideScent featherS to get the female’S attention. Much like the patterns in a peacock’s feathers, the power of a romantic style is in the details. Do away with those that look too severe or unnatural, such as shoulder pads. Instead, sneak in a bit of softness to a sharp suit by donning a floral print pocket square. Use accessories—like a delicate pair of turquoise earrings—to make a look more feminine. Clothes speak volumes even before words are used. A wise romantic is neither dour nor too eager to please. Think soft textures and welcoming silhouettes, or the equivalent of a sweet smile: never intimidating, but hinting at the possibility of more. n

ZEN SEDUCTION TOKYO

A VIEW TO A THRILL: Be original and treat your date to a night of sumo wrestling mania at Tokyo’s Nihon Sumo Kyokai tournaments. Japan’s national sport has preserved many ancient rituals that can be traced back to the country’s Shinto religion’s ancient origins.

FROM TOKYO WITH LOVE Beneath its high-tech, all-business veneer, Tokyo offers lovers an unexpected array of indulgences. CYNTHIA ROSENFELD scopes out the spots designed for romance. Heart of Japan Panoramic views of all 290 guestrooms at the newly reopened Palace Hotel Tokyo (www. palacehoteltokyo.com) make this venerable address adjacent to the Imperial Palace Gardens in central Marunouchi a good choice for couples in love. Owners spent US$21 million on renovations and mined the country’s artisanal heritage for in-room treasures, like ultra snuggly Imbari towels made with the purest spring water from Takanawa Mountains, and Jugetsudo green teas served in traditional Mashiko-yaki teacups handmade in a Tochigi prefecture kiln that dates back to Japan’s Nara period. In no particular order, here are my favorite getaways in the continent. INDONESIA Bali’s lure of sleepy volcanoes and private beaches is enhanced by its charm and cultural heritage. Popular Kuta Beach is party central in Bali, but there are many other beaches for various pursuits. Sanur, Legian, and Seminyak have romantic beach villas, all offering a quiet and chilled-out vibe. Its villas and pavilions, many with their own lounging salas and dining terraces, are spacious and airy. INDIA No romance list is complete without including India’s monument to love, the Taj Mahal. In the distance is one of the leading resorts in the world, the Oberoi Amarvillas Agra, with all its rooms offering breathtaking views of the monument. JAPAN Kyoto is rife with snuggly opportunities. Valentine’s in Kyoto would be too early for the cherry blossoms, but winter in the city evokes different possibilities, including old temples, walks among snowy pines, and, best of all, stays in traditional Japanese hotels, or ryokan, where the flavors and intensity of old Japan can be experienced firsthand. THE PHILIPPINES But the best part of my romance list is that so many of the best destinations are right in our country. Boracay, of course, must be on the list. For resorts,

the top ones include the multi-awarded Discovery Shores right on the beach. Or further afoot, there’s Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort & Spa. Shangri-La operates a chain of deluxe resorts all over Asia, but their Boracay hotel is tops for romance, set in the midst of a tropical forest. Bohol is only nanoseconds apart from Boracay on the romance list, with its landscapes, culture, and ultra-nice people. Eskaya Resort is a boutique hotel, with each villa having its own private infinity pool. Personal butlers provide the needed service detail that sets it apart. Palawan is the country’s island of the moment, from its rustic resorts in the northern Busuanga island group to the UNESCO-inscribed Puerto Princesa Subterranean River to the resorts in midst of it all, the crème de la crème, the El Nido Resorts. El Nido’s Lagen Island is a sanctuary with private villas for couples seeking ultimate relaxation for the body and spirit. n

FINDERS, KEEPERS Unused Giordano shirts for only Php10? CELESTINA ARVISU scours for the best finds in Baguio City. Photo by DAKILA ANGELES t’s never been a secret. Baguio is the Philippines’ number one city for thrift shopping, and I’m proud to be one of its avid ukay-ukay (literally, “to rummage”) shoppers. For years, Baguio has been popular with tourists, not just for its cool climate but also for its overflowing boxes of second-hand clothes, shoes, toys, and trinkets. I love the four-level Bayanihan Building right across Burnham Park. It keeps you dry during the rainy season, has a wide variety of choices, and offers unbeatable affordability. The only downside is the seasonal increase on prices of newer designer items. My next favorite ukay-ukay spot is the Night Market along Har-

rison Road, which is open every night from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. You can find items like Coach bags and Gap sweaters for as cheap as Php500! The only downside is the place’s bad lighting. When shopping for second-hand items, use these three senses keenly: sight, smell, and touch. In every ukay spot, you’ll find items of obvious awful quality at insane prices. The key to ukay-ukay shopping is your knack in canvassing. That’s the beauty of Bayanihan; searching for an item is very easy because of the building’s layout. Here, every turn will surprise you with more interesting finds. n

RESTORE YOUR NEwLY bOUGHT ITEmS INTO mINT CONDITION wITH THESE TIPS: 1. Before wearing or “upcycling” these used clothes, soak and wash them thoroughly in laundry detergent. Some ukay experts also suggest pouring boiling water over the items to get rid of bugs. 2. For a more thorough cleaning, bring the items to professional cleaners, such as ColorWash in Serendra in Bonifacio Global City (www.colorwash.com.ph), which specializes in leather bags and shoes. 68 I Mabuhay Magazine I February 2013

The Origin Of The Pine Tree

A

long time ago, there lived in Kilod, Bontoc, a splendid girl named Bangan. She was kind and gentle and honest in words and in deeds. Despite her fine character she was shunned by everyone. That was because she had a skin disease, ringworms all over her body. She was sixteen, but no one cared for her. She had been lonesome since her childhood. She pondered on what she would do to have the company of people. One day, she went to the farthest mountain to isolate herself and to look for companionship. There she enjoyed listening to the songs of the birds, the wonderful sounds of nature and carefully considred the trees and their uses to mankind. These thoughts made her forget her skin disease which worried her so. She then knelt down and prayed fervently, “Oh, Kabunian, Maker of all things, please turn me into a pine tree. That will make me useful and happy on earth. Men who come to this forest look for a certain kind of wood to carry home. Make me a pine tree, so that birds, beasts and other living creatures will be my friends.” Then she peacefully lay down and slept in the sunshine. As she lay fast asleep, she heard a gentle voice saying, “My child, you shall be as you wish.” She rubbed her eyes and looked around, but no one was in sight. Later she heard, “Pine wood is needed in this world. Every hair of your body shall be turned into a pine needle.” The next morning the lonely young girl disappeared. A small pine tree grew on that spot. The tree grew in different parts of the mountains. Thus Bangan became very happy. She whispered and whistled with the wind all through her life. Several years later, Kabunian appeared and asked, “Bangan, would you remain as you are, or become a girl again?” Bangan begged, “Oh, Father, let me be as I am. I am contented with my life now. I thank thee for changing me into a pine tree.” n

FINE PINE: Pine trees are a good source of turpentine oil and are known to have anti-bacterial, expectorant, and insecticidal properties. 70 I Mabuhay Magazine I February 2013

HIGH ON HIGH: TREKKING IN THE PHILIPPINE CORDILLERAS Hiking is a great way to work out with a view! Documentary producer CARLA OCAMPO guides us to explore the mountains of Northern Philippines—on foot. GETTING THERE: ROCK ’N ROLL! Fun starts with any intra-Cordi transport: minibuses and jeepneys full to bursting with locals up to the roof-racks. Riding atop will afford you a full view of the land seducing you to a trance. Whirring below, 4x4 wheels bite unto boulders, negotiating fire-roads merely inches away from nasty ravines. KNOW YOUR DESTINATION Trekking Mount Pulag? Train rigorously, as it is Luzon’s highest peak. Banaue? Secure your sense of balance to walk along terrace dikes with flair. Sagada? Channel your inner llama; surefootedness is needed around its mossy trails and wet caves. DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT SLOPES Not all Cordilleran towns have the same topography. For example, you need thick jackets for Tinoc, Ifugao. But in the humid basin of the Tinglayan river valley in Kalinga, breathable clothes are better. Most Cordi trails are unpaved and rocky; come with at least a pair of sandals with great traction, if not honest-to-goodness hiking shoes. Leave the boutique sneakers at home.

TREK WITH LOCALS Qualified guides should be affiliated with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Register at the DENR headquarters, or at the town hall itself, where you can meet their mayor—who often belongs to their tribe’s ancient line of nobility. HONOR INDIGENOUS CULTURE Here, you do not only turn to nature, but also deal with indigenous communities. Know about their customs and beliefs so as to avoid offending them. LEARN ONLINE www.thekayumanggitrails.org This features culture-sensitive narratives on Cordilleran customs, as seen through the eyes of Team KT. www.pinoymountaineer.com A pioneering blog by Gideon Lasco on hiking in the Philippines, packed with mountain trivia and sample itineraries for the clueless newbie. www.langyaw.com Travel tales by Estan Cabigas, at times detailing his encounters with indigenous taboos.

PACKING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS MEALS ON THE GO: Dehydrated meals can be bought at most sports stores. Carry nuts, cereal bars, dried fruit, chocolate, or crackers to snack on. FIRST AID: Aspirin, bandages, medical tape, and bug spray will come in handy. Undergo a first aid workshop before heading out. Better safe than sorry! HYDRATE: Most outdoor gear stores sell mini-filters or iodine-based treatments for water. You can also sterilize stream water on your trip by boiling it.

CONSERVATION

ON THE WINGS OF LOVE: Philippine Eagle Foundation’s incoming chairman Carlos G. Dominguez wholeheartedly initiated and supported the PEF since its inception 25 years ago, all for the love of the Philippine Eagle; (BELOW) Generous PAL employees contributed in the delivery of 223 stuffed toys to Davao.

ADOPT A ‘HARIBON’ It’s the love month, so why don’t you spread amor around by doing something unique—go give your sweetie a cute Philippine eagle stuffed toy. oncerned individuals who have been smitten by these majestic birds can now “adopt” a stuffed toy and help one of the world’s most critically endangered species survive and thrive once more. The Philippine eagle, one of the largest of the world’s birds of prey, is the country’s national bird. It is often referred to as “Haribon” (bird king). In celebration of its 25th year this month, the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF), a nonprofit, nongovernment organization that operates the Philippine Eagle Center (PEC) in Davao City in Mindanao, launched a renewed campaign to spread awareness— and much-needed funding—to help conservation efforts for the Philippine eagle. The PEF, tasked to undertake research, rehabilitation, and captive breeding of the eagle, was initiated by former PAL Chairman and President and former Agriculture Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez, who is also the PEF’s incoming chairman. Since its inception, the PEF has seen 24 eagles bred in captivity. At present, the PEC has 36 eagles in captivity and attracts an average of 100,000 visitors annually. The fundraising effort is in partnership with Pacific Paint (Boysen) Philippines Inc., which assisted in the production of the

1,000 cuddly toys. In November 2012, generous individuals from the Philippine Airlines all pitched in to deliver 233 of these toys via PAL flight 813 to Davao City where the birds are now waiting to be “adopted” by bird lovers and conservationists. This month of love, show how much you care by adopting these birds. Call Janelle Uy at +63920 908 8685 or Ramil Mendoza (Boysen Paint) at +63916 531 1744. You can also send email to info@philippineeagle.org to order, or visit the PEC in Malagos, Davao City. Proceeds will benefit the conservation programs of the PEF and other operational expenses of the PEC. n

HIGH AND MIGHTY: The Philippine eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) has a wingspan measuring seven feet and weighs up to 14 pounds. One of the world’s largest eagles, it is endemic to the Philippine islands of Mindanao, Luzon, Leyte, and Samar. 74 I Mabuhay Magazine I February 2013

My husband and I still take Life Oil regularly.” – Mae, 37

“Because of my hectic schedule at work, I have overlooked that I haven’t had my period in about seven months. I was scared to consult a doctor for fear of hearing bad news. Our school administrator introduced the product—which I bought immediately. In barely two weeks, I finally had my period. Now, my menstrual cycle is back to normal!” – Ria, 28

Over the years, Moringa oleifera (known locally as malunggay) has gained popularity as a natural source of nutrients that can save lives. Aside from the therapeutic properties of the plant, recent studies have led to a finding that is now a focus of interest— the malunggay plant can actually improve fertility in both men and women! In fact, research has claimed that the most potent herbal alternative to improve reproduction is the malunggay plant.

Year of the Snake: a Guide to the firSt 15 daYS Being happy in the first 15 days of the Year of the Snake ensures a smooth year ahead. Learn more from feng shui expert MarITeS aLLeN.

veryone should make an effort to celebrate and be merry on the first 15 days of the Chinese New Year. In the following guide, take note of the prosperity direction for each day (see chart). Make sure that a window or a door facing that direction is open to let good fortune flow in. Day 1, February 10

This is the luckiest day of the year, so wake up early and wear new, auspicious clothes, preferably those designed with mystic knot prints or symbols of your zodiac allies and friends. The head of the family should lead the offering of incense to the deities, ancestors, and local spirit landlords. Play loud and happy music. Wish every member of the family Happy New Year and give children and young adults their hongbao or angpau (red envelopes filled with money). Gather as a family between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and everyone should be seated together for a lavish breakfast by 9 a.m. At the start of the meal, young children and young adults should offer sweet tea to their elders. Things to avoid: Don’t mop or sweep floor. Also, don’t do laundry today. Bathe after 12 noon. Avoid black or bitter tea. Don’t make negative comments or bring up negative matters. Day 2, February 11

Celebrate with a lion dance and throw oranges and mandarins into the home. Place the 9 Rings Sword prominently in the center of the home to capture the luck of the prosperity star. You can also wear the Wealth and Success amulet. If your house faces southeast, throw a party and open your house to receive lucky energy. This is a good day to visit friends and business associates.

76 I Mabuhay Magazine I February 2013

Day 3, February 12

Stay indoors and avoid misunderstandings. The Rabbit-born should keep a low profile. If you must go out, carry the Peace and Harmony amulet. Have an incense ritual and make an offering of green banana, dried mushrooms, spring onions, white cabbage, garlic, pineapples, peanuts, and five types of fruits at your altar.

Day 4, February 13

Day 7, February 16

Earnestly pray for children’s success. Offer incense, garlic, or celery to Lord Weng Chang, the supreme Taoist deity for education, and chant the mantra OM AH RAPA CHANADI dedicated to the academic success of your children.

The traditional yuesang (a raw fish dish with vegetables) tossing should be done at least once during the first 15 days. Today is the best day to do it. While tossing, say your wishes such as “May our marriage last” or “May our business be more profitable.” Wear the Popularity Medallion today to boost your good fortune for the year. Day 8, February 17

Mandarin oranges and apple keychain

This is the day to start special prayers to the Jade Emperor or the God of Heaven, which usually begins from 11 p.m. Favored offerings include a pair of sugarcane, incense, 7 cups of Chinese tea, 7 cups of rice wine, 7 plates of fresh fruits, a roast pig, and 2 bouquets of flowers. Burn gold paper ingots to help overcome financial obstacles.

Day 5, February 14

Light firecrackers at the main door of the office. If there’s a lion dance, have the lions throw oranges and mandarins into your home or business. Offer five sets of fruits and five types of incense to the God of Wealth and ask for his blessings from all five directions. Day 6, February 15

This is the day for love and marriage. Those looking for a suitable partner can seek help from Lord Yui Lao, the Taoist deity for marital affairs, and offer him pink flowers and candles. To activate marriage luck, wear the Double Happiness pendant or bring along your Dragon Phoenix mirror.

day 9, February 18

day 13, February 22

day 15, February 24

Honor the Jade Emperor by visiting your local Taoist temple and make offerings of incense, flowers, and candles to the God of Heaven on his birthday. Carry the AntiBurglary amulet or place the Rhinoceros and Elephant in the center of the home.

Give the body a break by going vegetarian. Drink plenty of water and eat cooling foods to counter too much body heat.

The first full-moon night of the year marks the sweet ending of the New Year festivities. Families eat tongyuen together. This is also the Chinese Valentine’s Day; thus, young singles looking for love should release paper lanterns into the sky while asking blessings for good marriage and descendants. Young ladies offer mandarin oranges into the lake. If they’re on the lookout for husbands, this is the best night to energize the Dragon Phoenix Mirror. n

day 14, February 23

dayS 10–12, February 19, 20, and 21

Renew ties with friends and extended family members on these days. Bring some New Year goody bags filled with mandarin oranges, sweet meats, Chinese biscuits, and hongbao.

One might think that a musician and songwriter of Rico Blanco’s caliber has tried everything, but on his second solo release, the Pinoy rock veteran performed and programmed all the instruments himself, resulting in a synthesized update of his trademark sound. Blanco’s new wave influences are more obvious on some tracks (“When The Wheels Turn,” “What It Is”), but his familiar lyricism comes to fore on “Sayaw” and “Chismis,” while “Amats” proves that he could still come up with a big rock anthem. – Jason Caballa

Famous Filipino dishes include lechón (whole roasted pig), longganisa (Philippine sausage), tapa (cured beef), torta (omelette), adobo (chicken and/ or pork braised in garlic, vinegar, oil, and soy sauce), kaldereta (meat stewed in tomato sauce), mechado (larded beef in soy and tomato sauce), puchero (beef and plantains in tomato sauce), afritada (chicken and/or pork with vegetables simmered in tomato sauce), kare-kare (oxtail and vegetables cooked in peanut sauce), crispy pata (deepfried pig’s leg), hamonado (pork braised in pineapple sauce), sinigang (meat or seafood in sour broth), pancit (noodles), and lumpia (fresh or fried spring rolls). n

MOVIE TRIVIA: LincoLn >>Steven Spielberg was already

developing this film when he met with Doris Kearns Goodwin and confided in her that he wanted to make a film about Lincoln. She told him that she had just finished her book Team of Rivals . Spielberg obtained a copy and read it, and immediately decided to use it as the basis for the film. >>Hal Holbrook, who plays Francis Preston Blair, won an Emmy for playing Abraham Lincoln in the 1974 TV mini-series Lincoln. He also played Lincoln in the North and South mini-series, and in an appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” >>Lobbyist William N. Bilbo’s (James Spader) appearance was created from scratch because not a single photo of him exists. His eccentric presence was taken from various sources.

Maroon 5: overexposed Released in June 2012, Maroon 5 broke their signature alternative-rock style with this popsavvy record that garnered mixed reviews from fans worldwide. Jumping off from their catchy Billboard 100 single, “Moves Like Jagger,” which easily became the anthem of the year, this album showcases a whole new band identity that shows the evolution of Adam Levine and his crew from their “She Will Be Loved” days to the era of popelectronica synths.
