As the Summer Fades With so many activities going on during the Summer, it has been difficult to know where to look. JĂĄvea has been full of events and tourists and visitors and seasonal residents. These photos are from the last evening of the International Jazz Festival featuring Christian Scott (above) and Braxton Cook (left). We have a few more and some music for you later in the Magazine. The Front Cover is likely to cause some discussion - but for me is an integral part of understanding the deep-rooted traditions of my home town and its people - and the Bull Run into the sea.

Later in the magazine are a few more ghostly photos taken on the The August Night Walk in the Pueblo (yes, I did it again). The biggest advantage of getting fitter is I am wandering about with my camera more and am gradually building up a great portfolio of places and events - I certainly appreciate www.javeamigos.com even more - I have to say in the heat of August, hats off to Fay and Mike from Javeamigos as they have been tireless and everywhere and seem to have taken amazing photos of everything. The sales have started before even before the pool has cooled - so now is definitely the time to support our local businesses where you can. With Valencia’s arbitrary ban of the firework display, which traditionally closes the Duanes del Mar fiestas in honor of Our Lady of Loreto, there must have been many disappointed visitors and restaurateurs whose

bookings were unseasonably down. Our Town Hall tried to find a solution, but Valencia was not co-operative. The Mascletas were an excellent substitute and we have some photos from processions on the last day. I was interviewed twice during the Summer - first about the magazines and Javea - by Pilar Orti from Spain Uncovered and the second by Gill Henry - from Total FM was more personal - about my experiences with Cancer in Spain. Hope to catch you again in October, when we will include a peek inside all the new Grapevine Titles that will have launch ed by then Gaile, www.javeagrapevine.com Editor@JaveaGrapevine.com www.grapevine.international

Hello Grapevine friends, Summer has arrived in full force, very hot and bringing with it the many tourists who have decided to spend their holidays with us.

José Chulvi Mayor of Jávea

I would ask everyone to be particularly careful about the use of barbeques because of the very high risk of fires, as we have unfortunately witnessed in several nearby towns. After my short vacation, I’ve had many very busy days at work in both the in the Town Hall and in the Provincial government. Many meetings, working committees, the usual monthly plenary session of the town council, and as usual at this time of year many problems have arisen. At times the day to day matters can make life difficult, meeting with many citizens and trying to solve all their problems, but the important thing is not to stop and keep moving forward, hoping to achieve the best possible results. During these days I have signed the many agreements we have with entities of all kinds, cultural, sporting, social, etc. ... this way the council helps them financially so that they can carry out their work. SATE the Police Service to Assist Foreign Tourists in Xàbia Port is now open; a special police unit to cater for visitors who have been victims of a crime and have language problems. This office will advise them on how to file a complaint, how to cancel credit cards or documents, and will contact embassies and consulates or communicate with their families. We have been waiting to introduce this additional service for our tourists for some time, finally early August I signed the agreement in Alicante. Fortunately Xàbia is one of the municipalities with the lowest crime rate in the province of Alicante.

I have also participated in various social events, and as usual I have officiated at several weddings some of them in English ... slowly I’m improving. Every time I feel more comfortable speaking your language and I enjoy the challenge of on-going learning. Every year I attend the Live Chess event, this year there was a fun edition dedicated to the history of rock n’ roll.

I also enjoyed listening to the classical music concerts in the programme of Música a l’Estiu. And of course I thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful programme which delighted everyone at this year’s Xàbia International Jazz Festival. In addition to all these matters I would like to tell you that my party, the PSOE, has chosen their new national leader through an open electoral system, a new departure for Spain, the successful candidate was Pedro Sanchez, a young economist of 40 years of age who now has the responsibility of leading our party for the next 4 years. I wish him much luck; our country needs a renewed leadership.

I hope you enjoy the rest of summer, and for those who live here permanently we are so fortunate to be able to enjoy this paradise called Xàbia throughout the year. So I hope that you have all had a fantastic August surrounded by your family and friends. See you soon. Kind regards, your mayor

José Chulvi

The Economic Development Dept has organised a conference on business motivation Jávea on the 29th and 30th September.

14 Steps to Succeed ----Xàbia Business Conference

The councillor responsible, Juan Luis Cardona, explained that this forum is being organized by CREAMA Javea in collaboration with the business platform Javea Idea, and has created the slogan of the conference “14 Steps to Succeed”; 14 papers exploring this theme will be offered during Monday and Tuesday. CREAMA Administrator, Josette Russo, has planned these days to feature some acclaimed speakers, notably: Isra García (innovation and social networking expert), Sugata Jain (an Indian entrepreneur specialising in helping managers and businesses) and Helena López-Casares (who has written a book about the courage and fortitude of tennis player Rafa Nadal). These speakers, along with local businessman Luke Gisbert will be responsible for the successful innovation of “14 Steps to Succeed”. The conference will also have two large groups dedicated to business motivation and entrepreneurship with emphasis on “E” for ecology, to be coordinated by Javea Idea. Russo stated that the intention of this forum is to create a space for reflection and learning for people who want to build their business and entrepreneurs who are already in business, for all to learn from the experiences of others and how to apply it to each individual case. She added that the project has a grant of 6,500 Euros from the Council through the support of the General Directive of European Funds, controlled by Juan Viesca, who will be there on the opening day.

Also attending will be: Jose Antonio Ivars (the Director of Training for Entrepreneurs - from the Chamber of Commerce of Granada), Pedro A. Olivares (from Consultancy Salto Red) and Alfonso A. Hernández (Cepsinat CEO and business coach). From Idea Javea, Chema Lopez added that an important approach is concerned with looking at the more human element of role of employer and useful tools. To this end, we have scheduled a series of talks with Javea entrepreneurs who are achieving success with sustainable projects and hope that their experiences will be a guiding light to others. The speakers in this section are: Sergio Laffite (Rodando Eco Mensajeria), Chema Campos (Infotelma energy), Miguel Angel Devesa (Natural Solter), Angels Fornes (Aestas Ecotourism), Guiomar Ramirez Montesinos (Centro Terapeutico Mezquida) and coach David Casado. To participate in any of the three days, which will be Monday 29th morning and afternoon and Tuesday 30th morning in the Centro Social-Biblioteca de Duanes, you must first sign up. For more information and registration please contact the CREAMA office at Le Clot or the website www.creama. org. The direct Link to the form to register is: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1vX-

The Town Hall has approved the proposal for the roofing and and lighting of the riurau d'Arnauda the work is estimated at 84,539 euros and has a 50% subsidy from the Agència Valenciana de Turismo in its Millor Plan 2014, for the improvement of tourism resources. Tenders have already been requested for the work, due to start in October, explained the Councillor for Heritage, Antonio Miragall. The project includes covering the building with a gabled roof and distressed wood beams, wiring and interior and exterior lighting, and electricity. This project is designed for hosting social and cultural events, as well as improve the resource included in the regional route dels Riuraus. The riurau d 'Arnauda is one of the best remaining examples of this typr of traditional Riurau. Privately owned a few years ago the City reached an agreement with the owners to incorporate into the municipal heritage project. The riurau was dismantled piece by piece and rebuilt again in Montaner Park. Now it is available to the public and listed on the tourist routes.

THE BLOOPERS OF THE SUMMER

A lady comes to the “Department of Services, ENVIRONMENT and beaches. She wants somebody to listen to her problem: she cannot stand the baby birds which are singing in one of the trees in front of her flat and wants us to get rid of the nest. A man sends us mails, calls us and visits us regularly with the purpose to recuperate the money he spent to clean his carpet. Apparently, there is a Jacaranda in the street and its blue flowers stick on the family shoes...

Life is NOT monotonous for a Councillor and her staff. It can even be so comical... it will put a smile on your face.

The Grapevine Issue 172 2014|

A citizen criticises the blue “roundabout” at Barclays because we are unconscious of the danger: what would happen to his little daughter if the glass cuts her feet? An old lady who is fed up (aren’t we all?) with the dogs’ poo which adorn most of our roads & parks made a suggestion: I have seen a lot of dogs running on their own and leave their excrement on the pavement.... Why don’t we fine them? In “Avenida de La Fontana”, people have often complained that the sweepers don’t do their jobs properly. After all, a normal thing when you wake up at 11 am on a windy day! I sometimes had to avoid answering that “future belongs to the persons who wake up early” and just contented myself saying that when I pass at 7.30 am, I am always proud when I see Cespa’s team & engines working As soon as the “bando del Alcalde” restricting the hours of noise had been published, reactions like the following ones have surprised us:

by Cllr

Doris Courcelles

• Why doesn’t the Town Hall respect the time itself: why don’t they collect rubbish at 9 am? I am still wondering how we could empty all the bins which are distributed on 68 square kilometres at the same time! • Why was Amjasa repairing a leak at 7 am if the building work must start at 9 am? Should we have let the water flowing out or should we have cut the general supply to let people without services instead of repairing the breakdown? Believe me, these are not anecdotes and fruits of my imagination. They are only a sketch of what amused us these last two months.......... No need to add that we are all looking forward to September when Jávea gets back to “normal”

Easy

computer-talk

Hi Everyone! On this month’s post we are going to talk about a pretty useful gadget for this season of the year too: the eBook. Some of you might already be enjoying the wonders of one of this type of book, but for the rest, here is a little sum up of what it is, and what it is for. An eBook is a book in electronic format which you can download to your reading device, and read it on the screen. It can have numbered pages, table of contents, pictures and graphics, exactly like a printed book. It’s quite simple to purchase and download eBooks through the Internet. Just like purchasing any other product. The only difference is that after payment you will either be directed to a download page or receive the download link in an email. Then all you have to do is click on the link and the eBook will automatically download to your computer, to a folder of your own choice. After downloading you don’t have to be connected to the Internet in order to read the eBook. You can do so offline. If you wish to have it printed, it is very easy too. Just click on the print button in the eBook, to print it with your own home printer. As commented, EBooks are delivered almost instantaneously. You can purchase, download and start reading them within minutes, without leaving your chair. You don’t have to go to a bookstore to buy them, neither wait for them for days, weeks and sometimes more to arrive in the mail. And this can be done 24 hours a day, every day of the year, from the comfort of your own house or office.

You can purchase and download an eBook, even if you are on a vacation. All you need is a laptop, tablet, smartphone, or a reading device, and an Internet connection. They are ecologic, as no trees are required to manufacture paper for the pages of eBooks and take up less space. You practically don’t need any space to store them or a library or room for them. You can store hundreds and thousands of eBooks on your computer or reading device and also carry a whole library of hundreds of books with you, on CD, in a laptop, noteBook or any eBook reader, without worrying about their weight. This means you can read eBooks everywhere, on the bus, train, airplane, etc. Also, they are more safely stored and carried from one place to another, than ordinary books and survive more time than traditional books. They can show links, for easy access to more information and related websites and are searchable, meaning that you can easily search for any information in an eBook, instead of turning page after page as you have to do with a traditional paper book. Also they can be interactive and contain audio, video and animations, which can boost up the message that the author is trying to express. Regarding the cost, eBooks are delivered through the Internet, there are no packing and shipping expenses, and therefore in most of the occasions are more economical than their homologues in paper.

The Grapevine Issue 172 2014|

And what about reading them? Is the print small? Well, not at all. Fonts in eBooks can be resized, making them easier to read for people with disabilities. And even with additional software it is possible to turn some of the eBooks into audio books! Nowadays, one can find eBooks about every possible subject, fiction and nonfiction, free and not free, so as you can see, this newish reading method has various advantages and on our next post we will see the ones that the different systems there are to read them have, in order to make the correct decision if you are thinking about purchasing one‌. or thinking about ordering one to Father Christmas! Please pop over our website, which has just been upgraded and would appreciate your comments about its new look. Thanks in advance for this Here is the URL : http://www.jpg-asistencia.com

The Grapevine Issue 172 2014|

One of the BIG questions asked by people moving to Spain from the UK is ‘Can I use the Spanish NHS?’ The answer is, it depends….. The general information which follows will also apply to other EU citizens moving to Spain, although I’ll be referring specifically to how it works for a UK citizen. Possibly the most important thing to remember is that if you are living in Spain, you cannot legitimately use your UK issued EHIC to access healthcare here. It is for holidaymakers only. Access to the state healthcare system isn’t residence based, as it is in the UK. It’s contribution based. Which means that you can’t access state healthcare just because you live here; you have to pay for it by making contributions into the system.

So… how does that work? Many people who move to Spain will move here to retire. If you’re in receipt of a state pension, then the UK will fund your healthcare in Spain by way of an S1 form, which you should apply for from the DWP in Newcastle when you are about to leave the UK. This will be sent to your address in Spain. Not only is the person who receives the pension covered, but spouses & children are also, so make sure that you make it clear to the DWP as to how many of you need to be covered – they will need to be named.

Once you are registered as resident you get the S1 form(s) validated at the INSS (Instituto Nacional de la Seguridad Social – Social security office) & they issue a Social Security number. Take that, (along with all the other bits of paper you’ll find you need all the time: padrón, resident cert/ card, passport & not forgetting photocopies) to the local centro de salud & you’ll be issued with a tarjeta sanitaria.

But what if you’re not in receipt of a state pension? If you were a registered resident of Spain, & fiscally resident before 24th April 2012, then you can access state healthcare for free, as long as your annual income is under 100,000 €. If you aren’t already using the healthcare system you need to get in touch with the DWP in Newcastle & tell them that you live in Spain & that you need a ‘legislation letter’. You need one for each member of the family. This letter informs Spain that you have no healthcare provision in the UK. You then take that & all the usual bits of paper plus form TA1 (which you can download) to the INSS ….you’ll be issued with a SS number…..and then you head to the centro de salud – again with the usual papers, & you’ll get a tarjeta sanitaria. In some circumstances the UK will issue S1s to the family members of someone working in the UK & financially supporting that family which lives in Spain. Contact the DWP to see if you qualify.

HEALTHCARE

IN SPAIN

One of the BIG questions asked by people moving to Spain from the UK is ‘Can I use the Spanish NHS?’ The answer is, it depends…..

by Lynn Cobb

| The Grapevine Issue 172 2014

Of course, not everyone was resident here in April 2012, or perhaps hadn’t registered. In that case you will only be entitled to free state healthcare if you are working, either with a contract, or as self- employed/autónomo. This would mean that you’ll be paying Social Security contributions, so can register for healthcare. Registering is essentially as in the other two scenarios, except you won’t need anything from the UK – instead you’ll need your vida laboral. If you have dependents, they will also be covered & you’ll need to register them as your dependents at the INSS. Not everyone under pensionable age comes here to work though. Lots of people will come to retire early expect to live on savings, a company pension or similar. These people cannot access state healthcare in Spain, so will need private healthcare. In some regions there is now a ‘buy in’ scheme to state healthcare, known as the convenio especial, which means that once you have been a registered resident for 12 months, you can use the state system for a monthly fee. For someone under the age of 65 this is currently 60€ per month & 157€ per month, over the age of 65. Some private health insurers charge less than this, but the main advantage of this scheme is that all pre-existing conditions are covered.

Not all regions offer this scheme, but the plan is that it will eventually be available nationwide.

Children. All children under the age of 18 resident in Spain are entitled to free state healthcare. It isn’t always easy to convince the powers that be, that this is the case, but here’s a link to the info. on the govt. website. http://www.msssi.gob.es/fr/ gabinetePrensa/reformaSanidad/faq.htm

Prescriptions. In the UK, prescription charges are set at a flat fee per item, regardless of what the medication is. Here in Spain we pay a percentage of the actual price of the medication. The percentage paid depends upon your personal circumstances. As a general guide, pensioners pay 10%, with a cap of 8€ a month if annual income is under 18,000€, a cap of 18€ a month if annual income is between 18,000€ & 100,000€ & 60€ month if annual income is over 100,000€. Generally if you are working you pay 40% if your annual income is under 18,000€, 50% if your annual income is between 18,000€ & 100,000€ & 60% if your annual income is over 100,000€. There are further discounts for those with chronic conditions, with medication charged at 10%, with a maximum of 4.13€ per item. If you have access to healthcare via the convenio especial, then you will pay full costs of any medication.

Going on holiday from Spain. If you are travelling outside Spain, but within the EU, you should carry an EHIC card, known as a TSE in Spain. If you are working here, or you qualify for state healthcare because you were resident before April 2012, you can apply for the TSE online here https://sede.seg-social.gob. es/Sede_1/ServiciosenLinea/ Ciudadanos/232000 or in person at the INSS office. If you access healthcare by way of an S1 you need to telephone the DWP in Newcastle. T hey will issue you with a special EHIC which you can use outside Spain, including in the UK, when you visit there. It is usually recommended that you also take out travel health insurance, because the EHIC/ TSE only covers you for essential treatment on holiday & wouldn’t, for instance, get you home should you need special medical transport. If you are visiting anywhere in Europe for an extended holiday & take regular medication, you can ask your doctor here for a receta transfronteriza which can be used in a pharmacist in any European country. You might be charged the full cost of the medication, depending on the rules in the country which you are visiting, & these costs cannot be recovered. When using your EHIC/TSE you will also need to show your passport as proof of ID

Coming on holiday to Spain You should carry an EHIC card from the UK. This can be applied for online here : http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/ Healthcareabroad/EHIC/Pages/ about-the-ehic.aspx Again, it is usually recommended that you also take out travel health insurance, because the EHIC only covers you for essential treatment on holiday, & wouldn’t for instance get you home should you need special medical transport. The EHIC can only be used in a state centro de salud (health centre) or hospital. There are many private medical facilities in Spain but you can not use the EHIC in them. If you are coming for an extended holiday & take regular medication, you should ask your GP for a

cross-border prescription which you can use in a farmacia here in Spain. You might be charged the full costs of the medication, & these costs cannot be recovered. When using your EHIC you will also need to show your passport as proof of ID If you have lost or forgotten your EHIC, or if it has expired or been stolen and you need to see a doctor in Spain, to call the Overseas Healthcare Team (OHT) on 0044 191 219 1999 and request a Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC). !A FEW TIPS & TRICKS!

Learn Aprender www.learn-aprender.blogspot.com.es www.facebook.com/LearnAprender I’ve decided to give you a few tips & tricks this time – ways of extending your vocabulary without having to work too hard!! With these tips & tricks you have potentially 1000s of new words!

OPPOSITES ATTRACT? Maybe that’s true of people – but this is all about words in Spanish. There are some ‘tricks’ for making opposites (antonyms) - & while they don’t work with everything – they are useful nonetheless. This is done by adding a prefix - a few letters to the beginning of the word - & hey presto, you have the opposite! The most common of these prefixes are a, anti, des, in.

normal – anormal constitucional – anticonstitucional empleo – desempleo frecuente - infrecuente

SHOPS & SHOPPING

Lynn Cobb

You’ve probably noticed that the names of a lot of shops make it obvious what is sold there. This is just one thing I love about the Spanish language – it’s so logical! You might not realise that this logic extends to the person who either makes the goods or works in the shop. The words are formed by

adding something to the end of the name of the item - by adding a suffix. It doesn’t work with all of them – but it does seem to with most!

ITEM, MAKER / SHOPKEEPER and SHOP pan panadero panadería helado heladero heladería café cafetero cafetería cerveza cervecero cervecería pelo peluquero peluquería carne carnicero carnicería

BUENOS AMIGOS I few months ago I wrote about ‘False Friends’…English & Spanish words which sound the same but mean something totally - & sometimes embarrassingly – different. However, there are literally thousands of words in Spanish & English which sound the same, & pretty much mean the same too. I have no intention of listing them all, but here are some guidelines. I’ve called them BUENOS AMIGOS Good Friends – technically they are known as cognates. We have them because both English & Spanish have Latin & Greek roots. I’ve given just a few examples for each – but there are many more!

| The Grapevine Issue 172 2014

AL/AL Some words are actually the same – or very nearly!! radical universal essential horizontal gradual

radical universal esencial horizontal gradual

TION / CIÓN Lots of English words which end in TION, will end in CIÓN in Spanish& will generally mean the same. tradition celebration hospitalisation investigation ventilation

tradición celebración hospitalisación investigación ventilación

LY / MENTE There are 100s of English words which end in LY – in Spanish they will end in MENTE here are just a few – there are many more finally naturally normally immediately perfectly

finalmente naturalmente normalmente inmediatamente perfectamente

ARY/ARIO Many English words ending with ARY, will end with ARIO in Spanish canary extraordinary hereditary imaginary necessary

www.learn-aprender.blogspot.com.es www.facebook.com/LearnAprender Lynn Cobb

Learn Aprender

canario extraordinario hereditario imaginario necessario

IC/ICO, MENT/MENTO, ISM/ISMO & IVE/IVO These are easy – often you just put an O on the end…….. yes I know some people do that to everything – but sometimes you really can! athletic atlético document documento electromagnetism electromagnetismo patriotism patriotismo effective efectivo exclusive exclusivo

NCE/NCIA A lot of English words which end in NCE, simply change to NCIA in Spanish audience ambulance violence tolerance existence

audiencia ambulancia violencia tolerancia existencia

OR/OR Some hardly change at all…if indeed at all…. actor error radiator pastor ulterior

actor error radiador pastor ulterior

TY/DAD Many words which end in TY in English, change to DAD in Spanish security entity curiosity electricity reality

securidad entidad curiosidad electricidad realidad

AND IT EVEN WORKS WITH LOTS OF VERBS…. IFY/E to AR/IR adore use imagine introduce decide interfere justify simplify modify

adorar usar imaginar introducir decidir interferir justificar simplificar modificar

So – with just those tricks you can increase your vocabulary by 1000s of words – literally! …… and because it has been such a hot summer – I can’t think of anything better than this…….. https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=IW6UNOyjIs0

Vonzo

Male, Shelter since 02.11.2013 Alsatian Mix, DOB 15.05.2012 – 70 cm

Vonzo is like a big baby. He got used to live in a very big group of male and female dogs and gets on well with all of them. He likes to play a lot. We think that, due to his age and also due to the fact that there is a lot of Alsatian in him, he could be trained very well and thus become an excellent dog either in a family or with a single person.

Tekla

Female, Shelter since 01.02.2014 Crossbreed, DOB 15.02.2012 40 cm TEKLA is a nice, vivid & intelligent dog. Although she tends to be dominant, she is now living in a group with other females and this will of course calm her down gradually. However, a basic training will do her good. With the education and the attention she needs, she will surely end up as a very good dog. JULE was found near the cemetery of Javea together with her five puppies and brought to the shelter. All are beautiful and in good health. The puppies are now old enough to be separated from her mother and it is high time that we try to find her a new owner. Jule is an uncomplicated dog and would enjoy living with a family in a big garden and go for extended walks

JULE

Female, Shelter since 21.05.2014 Crossbreed, DOB 15.05.2014 51 cm Apasa was founded 15 yrs ago by a group of Spanish, English and Germans. It started from humble beginnings: a few concrete kennels and no fencing, but over the years it has grown so much and we now have upwards of 200 dogs, we also have quarantine kennels for when new or sick dogs are bought in. We work with the town hall and the police in collecting dogs that have been lost or abandoned. We need the support of our members and all the fundraising events to keep us going. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support. TIM, male, Shelter since 24.03.2012 Spanish Mastin Mix, DOB 15.01.2011 – 56 cm Tim´s first year was very unlucky. Left by his owners and ended up at the pound. Only to be adopted and sent back to the pound again. Tim is a very good dog, but he has a lot of energy. His last family brought him back, because they did not trust him with their very small children. We will never know if that was the real reason, because at the pound he behaves like a young dog and we have not seen anything to be scared about. Nevertheless, we do not recommend him to a family with very small children, because he surely needs some training. If you want to give him a permanent home and let him forget the past, please consider Tim now while he is still young! POUCH, female, shelter since 24.10.2011 Podenco, DOB 15.10.2009 – 54 cm Wow, que guapa! All podencos have beautiful eyes but hers are amazing! And she has the character to go with them: easy going, obedient and loving. If you can give Pouch a home, she will love you the way only a podenco can. She will curl up in your bed, without taking any of the space and without you noticing. And when she wakes up: be prepared to get some kisses from the best friend you have ever had! And if that is not enough: why not take two podencos? Podenco is the most social breed existing in this area.

LLOBITO, male, Shelter since 05.04.2012 Crossbreed, DOB 15.04.2005 – 42 cm What a fine boy he is. Just found on the street and we think he did not learn anything where he came from. But that is not a problem. We have very good packs at the pound that will teach the newcomers everything they need to know - How to eat together, play together, trust people, and lots more. Llobito is now ready for a new home, trained by the best dogs of Javea!

News From Agenda 21

Crisis sees rise in number of youngsters out of work and not studying - One in every four young Spaniards is a “nini” – a nickname in Spanish for someone who is neither working nor studying (ni trabaja, ni estudia). According to a new education report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Spain has the highest number of ninis aged between 15 and 29. The level is also five points higher than the OECD average, on a par with Chile, Ireland, Turkey, Italy and Mexico. The number of university graduates in the country out of work, or who are no longer studying, has risen 10 points in four years, to 23 percent, according to the OECD’s Education at a Glance 2014 report. For full story see: El País in English Port works began on 9th Sept The renovation of the avenida Jaume I was planned for the autumn of last year but was delayed after several modifcations, which forced it to be redone and re-tendered. Then Easter got in the way and the works were delayed until after the summer. The project will cost of 110,000 euros and in addition to widening the sidewalks, will renew tree grates, install new street lights and reorganise the parking spaces. The work will be carried out by Montgó SL and will have a duration of four months. from XAD:

Wage cuts causing Spanish households to struggle, warns OECD - Cuts to the annual average wage of around 2% triggered by the economic crisis have caused Spanish workers and families to struggle to make ends meet, a study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has found. In its 2014 Employment Outlook the international organisation adds that the reductions have also improved productivity and external competitiveness. Spain will post the best unemployment reduction rate between 2014 and 2015 (-2.2%), but the jobless rate will still hover around 23.9% by the end of next year, a figure that is set only to be surpassed by Greece with 27%. Hotel occupation and registered property rentals were down a bit, while camp site occupation was up. Numbers of tourists per day, calculated from water consumption and volumes of rubbish collected were just over 41,000 in August and just over 33,000 in July. Overall the figures were seen as a “slight improvement”, though there was a tendency for short stays and visitors were spending less. Stompers Back in Town

Lovers of classic New Orleans jazz will be pleased to know that, courtesy of Concerts Costa Blanca, the enormously popular Bourbon Street Stompers will be back in October for what promises to be their most exciting visit to date.

Unfortunately, Joshua Stewart’s Munich Opera House commitments mean that he is unable to perform in Alicante on the Sunday but Betty Berent will sing at all three concerts.

The internationally renowned Stompers, from Essen in Germany, are now in their 21st year, and this will be their fifth visit to the Costa since 2009. They will be accompanied again by New Orleans jazz and opera vocalist Joshua Stewart, who made his debut with the group here on the Costa last year, as well as female vocalist Betty Berent from Hamburg, who accompanied the band on their 2012 tour. Josh and Betty have never sung together before, or even met. Similarly, last year Josh and the band met for the first time just an hour before their first performance but such is their professionalism that you would have thought they had been together for years.

Altea:

The tour opens on Friday 17 October at the wonderful Palau in Altea, where the group made its first Spanish appearance before almost 1,000 people in 2009. On Saturday 18 October they play once again at the magnificent Auditori de Teulada-Moraira, having filled it to capacity on three previous occasions; and on Sunday 19 October they bow out at the huge Auditori de Diputacion de Alicante (ADDA), where they played for the first time last October.

Box office details are as follows:

Ring 96 688 1924 on Thursdays between 1630 and 1930; or buy at the door from 2 hrs before performance, or on-line at www.palaualtea. reservaentradas.com.*** Teulada: At the Auditori box office on Wed to Sat between 1100 and 1300, and 1800 to 2000; or at the ayuntamiento in Teulada and the Espai La Senieta in Moraira on Mon to Fri between 0900 and 1500; or on-line at Instanticket on 902 444 300 or at www.instanticket. es***. Alicante: Through Instanticket on 902 444 300 or at www.instanticket.es***; or at the door from 2 hours before performance. ***On-line booking may not be possible until closer to the performance dates. Hi, I am an Essex London Javea girl and serious dog loving nutter. I like to have fun do Zumba and love all types of music. I am sometimes referred to as lucky Lizy, and being given an opportunity to be on the radio is just another example of this! I really hope you can tune in and enjoy my show. Love Lizy

I have recently celebrated 37 years as a professional entertainer and have the scars to prove it!! I work as a Pianist/ Vocalist entertainer in the North Costa Blanca and also work Piano Bars in Germany and Norway and have just returned from a successful Christmas contract aboard Hurtigruten’s MS Midnatsol. I am looking forward to returning to radio and plan on giving a varied and fun packed show

The Grapevine Issue 172 2014|

I was born in Ireland and moved to England in 1954. Trying my hand at many jobs I became a painter. I have always liked Southern Gospel music and developed a taste for radio when I spent some time at Son Life Broadcasting in America. When on missions in Ireland I was invited to ShineFM radio and from there I became a radio presenter running a Gospel show until we returned to Spain. I am now really happy to be back on the radio.

My name is Clair Gingell, I’m a mum of 4 and I’ve been entertaining here on the Costa Blanca for the last 4 years. I am now looking forward to the challenge of radio presenting and aim to deliver a fun packed lunch time show with a wide range of great music.

Tony Cabban the president of NHW Javea met with the chief of police, Snr Montfort, and he received some good news.

this is transmitted to the police. The description sounds a bit long winded but it is really very simple - just a matter of tapping a few icons.

Crime in Javea is at an all time low and Snr Monfort believes the NHW network has contributed to this.

I have not tried it so cannot vouch for it. If anyone else has used this and tested it please let me know how you got on.

Crimes per 1000 head of Javea’s population have fallen to 21.68 for the year 2013 compared to the 2005 level of 40.96 and Javea has a crime level 14% lower than the overall level of Alicante province. Great news let’s hope this trend continues. Snr Montfort also gave Tony his assurance that the police are very committed to working with us all to continue to make Javea a safe place to live. ALERTCOPS: There is an app available for iOS or Android called Alertcops. It was recommended to me by one of our members. I had a look at it and it appears very simple.

POISONING: I have had a few reports recently of pets being poisoned again. Sadly there’s not much we can do to prevent this other than to ask you to be very aware if you are using poisons for vermin control etc..

Neighbourhood Watch Montgo Update

CARRY YOUR PHONE: A good tip from one of our members - if someone calls at your property and you go to the gate to see them always take your phone with you and carry it prominently. This ensures if someone is up to no good they will be aware you may phone the police or may photograph them or their car.

You simply download the free app then register. You have to provide your names, address, passport or NIE, phone number and preferred language. Finally it asks if you have any disabilities that hinder communication. You then receive a pin code to validate your app. All very straightforward.

Now that the tourists have gone I suspect the opportunist thieves will be replaced by the usual gas man type cons.

The app uses location services so it knows where you are. If you have a “situation” you simply click the app and it brings up a page of icons. There is an icon for “theft, robbery, assault” one for “aggression” one for “fight between groups” etc. You simply tap the appropriate icon and another screen appears.

Many of the dodgy gas fitters are now phoning for appointments.

For example if you click the robbery one you are then asked to tap on another icon from the list (home, other building, vehicle, public transport, road, school). If I select home it asks who is in trouble (me, other people). If I click me it asks if it is “now” or a “while ago”. Click now and it generates a message to say “I am suffering a theft, robbery or assault at home”. One further click and

The Grapevine Issue 172 2014|

Please be aware and remember the golden rule - Don’t let anyone into your garden unless you are ABSOLUTELY SURE who they are.

If you get such a call refuse the appointment and call your gas company yourself. That’s it for now

Family €20 - 30

FAMILY RESTAURANTS / GOOD & RELIABLE (Euros 20 - 35 per head) Restaurante AUSTRIACO has been sold and a new Italian restaurant has taken its place - see under LA TAGLIATELLA. Restaurante AMANECER : c.300m on the right, along the ridge of the headland going to the Cabo San Antonio (off the summit of the JáveaDenia mountain road). What a surprise to find this restaurant now so wonderfully refurbished with shaded pool-side bar and eating area, comfortable pool-side furniture and, within, an elegant air-conditioned dining room. During their recent visit to Jávea the Southampton University Symphony Orch. spent the whole afternoon here and all spoke very highly of how well they d been looked after. If you, or your relatives, do not have a swimming pool here is a place to have lunch and spend the afternoon (with the grandchildren ?). The dining area is large enough for social functions yet still acceptable for more intimate dining. Menu-del-dia €11. Easy parking. A good addition to the list. Tel: 96 579.0765 / E-mail: amanecerjavea@hotmail.es / www. restauranteamanecer.es AUSTRIACO Bakery (Jávea; Arenal beach front). This excellent bakery continues to offer their superb bread/ croissants & gâteaux from 07:00h daily. (also served at their café. Tel : 96 647.1004 / open daily / Another source of very excellent bread is the (expensively-priced, muzakinfested) Saladar Supermarket. Also visit “Le Parisien” coffee bar (next to the Deutsche Bank – even worse muzak !) and the British Bakery opposite. Restaurante AZORIN : Jávea Port (in street behind Napoli). Superb fish “a la plancha” (especially sole) /chicken & chips. Menu del dia €9. Kids love it. Tel : 96 579.4495 / f. Sat. Restaurante BACCHUS (Jávea) : Wonderful quality, Swiss

owned. Cook your own (superb) steak on stone. Pinosol-Cansalades road. Must book. Menus-del-día from €15 (W/ends €18). Tel : 96 647.3096 / f. Mon. / http://www.infocostablanca. com/bacchus/first%20en.htm Restaurante L’ÉCHALOTTE : Jávea Costa Nova, beside the tennis club just before the La Guardia cross roads. International cuisine of excellent quality with covered terrace behind. Good parking. Tel: 96 647.3364 / [ no web site ] Restaurante EL GAUCHO (formerly Las Brisias on the Jesús Pobre road). This restaurant has gained many plaudits under the management of the excellent Pizzeria Pepa (at Arenal) and offers an especially worthwhile and attractive restaurant (& terrace) especially for the residents of Montgó. Superb meat is their speciality. Visited recently. Marvellous AVAN (Duero) at €18. Attentive friendly service. Food delicious. Best to book. Tel: 96 646.1338 / www.pizzeriapepa. com Restaurante LUNGO MARE (Jávea, Arenal beach front) : Italian restaurant - beware large portions (some can be shared !) and, also, the muzak can be bad ! Often fairly full so perhaps better to book. In spite of hot competition next door recent reports have not been as good as previously ! Tel : 96 647.1196 / open daily http://www.verema.com/ restaurantes/46085-lungo-marejavea Restaurante MEZQUIDA : Main road from Jávea old town towards Arenal, on right side, just before the SuperCor/Iceland roundabout but after Sol-Mar offices. Pleasant terrace and good ambience. Very popular Spanish ‘family’ restaurant. Serves the best Arroz negro (a delicious rice and squid dish) that we know of. Superb meat. Mostly muzak-free. Menu-del-día €16. Tel : 96 579.3620 / open daily / E-mail: rtemezquidaxabia@ hotmail.com http://www. restaurantemezquida.com/

Restaurante MINTT RUSTICA (Jávea - Cami Cabanes). Take road to right of Barclays, right at roundabout; it’s along on the left after the first burmp. Formerly La Rustica and now under new management. Tel : 96 577.0855 / Open 7/7. Restaurante MONTGÓ : 2-3kms along Jávea -Jesús Pobre road (on left, with large stone tablet outside). Amazing choice/ value/ quantity/ quality & well presented. Excellent fish ‘n’ chips (with Azorin in the puerto). Menu-del-día €11.50. We remind readers of the slightly more up-market ALMENDROS restaurant (slow service) on the opposite side of the road and for which there have, quite recently, been some good reports. Tel : 96 579.5020 / f. Thurs. Restaurante PIRI-PIRI : Excellent/ imaginative (copious) ‘tapas’. Widely praised and popular with residents. On the port’s pedestrianised seafront, leading from the bridge. Arrive early for lunch, but best to book. Excellent Menus-del-día €11.50 (w/ends €14.50). Charming host & very professional - one of our favourites. Shares jazz with neighbour Colima on Thurs. Tel : 96 579.4745 / barpiripiri@ hotmail.com f. Sun.pm & Mon. Restaurante PIZZERIA PEPA (Jávea: Arenal beach front, nr. middle). Spanish; excellent value, swift service. Pizza takeaway. VERY efficient, popular with good atmosphere; muzak low; must book ! Menu-del-día €16. The best quickservice “family” restaurant at the beach. But beware when ordering water : bottle arrived at the table opened and was charged at €2.90 both unacceptable. Tel : 96 579.2572 / open daily

http://www.pizzeriapepa.com NEW ADDITION Restaurante EL SECRETO DEL TOMATE : Ctra.Jávea-Gata Km4 (on left side approaching the crematorium). Owner Kiko (from Valencia)…. We have received good reports and plan a visit in Sept. From 22:00h onwards is packed with Spaniards who have already discovered it. Praised for extensive use of his home grown herbs, veg. garden & use of grill. Await comments, please. Tel: 96 646.2646 / Mob. 616 733083 / E-mail: elsecretodeltomate@gmail.com Restaurante LA TAGLIATELLA : (Jávea, Arenal beach front) : Another elegant looking Italian restaurant, close to Lungo Mare, but with dark 19thC décor. Reports (4) have commented upon poor service and high prices. We await a change to this situation. Tel: 96 647.2984 / www.latagliatella. es / 7/7 ARENAL BEACH BREAKFASTS – COFFEE BARS & BAKERIES BREAKFAST at Jávea’s Arenal beach : For those looking for a breakfast of some quality on the sea front – especially what is known as a “Full English” - we recommend the Champagne Bar and Black Beluga. Also Parador buffet especially on Sundays ? LE PARISIEN (Horno y pasteleria artesanal) : Next to Deutsche Bank (or opposite Humpty Dumpty) at Jávea’s Arenal: French coffee bar with superb bakery & patisserie – everything here is to be praised. Stylish and clean and delicious snacks. Very horrible and loud muzak (best to sit outside). Open 08:30h – 19:00h (Sundays till 14:00h). Tel : 96 579.1466 / www. elparisien.com

EASTERN RESTAURANTS INDIAN RESTAURANTS

Eastern Cuisine, Fish and More

Restaurante MADRE INDIA : Another quality Indian at Arenal beach (in the middle outside of the road that runs right around the beach area). Takeaway facility and Wi-Fi. Noisy, but with appropriate(!) muzak and TV. Not clear if this is a change of ownership as well. Comments welcome. Open 7/7. Tel: 96 646.3768 NEPALESE RESTAURANTS Being largely ignorant of Indian cuisine we have wondered why these next three restaurants are talked about over and above all other (Indian? style) restaurants and two are listed at Trip Advisor higher than the other Indian restaurants. We can only assume it must be the Nepalese influence ! Go and try them. Restaurante BUDDHA PALACE: Arenal - opposite the Plaza. Always a most enjoyable experience and the “bush telegraph” tells us that this is the place to go ! Tel: 96 579 2894 / E-mail: buddhapalace1@gmail.com / Open: tlj - http://www.buddhapalace. es/ Restaurante GURKHA PALACE :

Avda. Jaime 1, No.8 in Jávea port. Fine food with good ambience. Take away service. Menus del dia : €9.50 & €11.99 A la carte €20-30. Tel: 96 579. 3331 / f. Tues.midday. Restaurante EVEREST SPICE (previously Riu Rau) (Costa Nova): Another Nepalese restaurant with charming décor; top of road up from Saladar to Costa Nova Panorama just after hairpin bend on the road towards La Guardia and Granadella (just after the closed kindergarten). Pleasant atmosphere. One good report so far. Tel : 96 577.0230 / INDONESIAN TAPINDO (& “Take-Away”) : In the last row of shops on the right side as you leave Arenal shopping area towards Mercadona. Produces excellent Indonesian food (especially Bami Goreng & Nasi Goreng).

All sorts of combinations can be served to take home - there are facilities for eating on their terrace. Ideal for the hungry! 96 646.4191 / f.Sun. CHINESE Restaurante < The WOK BUFFET > : Jávea, at the Barclays roundabout. Very good. Recently refurbished and now with an extensive choice of shellfish included in their bargain price. Eat all you like for Euros 9.95 (special price for kids under 7). Go early (12:30h for lunch, 19:30h for dinner) when the huge spread is at its best. Attentive service. No muzak. A bit of a “canteen” ambience but this is a great quality “fill-up” if you are hungry and feeding hordes of kids. 96 579.7016 / daily 12-24h. OTHER Bar/Restaurante LAS OLAS : HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED ...... why there are always so many cars outside the Bar LAS OLAS (on the Cabo de la Nao road, on the right, half way between Barclays and the Ferreteria PLA48) ? Well, go discover it for yourselves. Here is, indeed, a real surprise. A huge range of really good, copious tapas far cheaper than the Arenal beach front ! The size of the portions means this is perhaps 50% of the cost of the beach establishments ? Be careful how much you order - you may not be able to finish. Ideal for hungry kids ! Clean tables, good service, bi-lingual menu. TV inside but mostly quiet outside. Tel: 96 577.0175 FISH (from Euros 25.00 per head) :

Restaurante AMARRE 152 (Jávea) literally “Mooring 152”, tranquil situation by the bobbing boats at the very head of the mooring creek that goes inland from the Parador. Menus del dia €18 & 20 (fish). Excellent for rice/fish dishes. A recent visit showed them on top form. Tel : 96 579.0629 / f. Monday http://www.verema.com/ restaurantes/36008-amarre-152xabia-javea

NEW ADDITIONS Restaurante LA CALETA : Avda. Ultramar 114, Jávea. A delightfully positioned FISH restaurant. Facing the sea at Arenal, take the coastal road to the right not quite all the way to the end (Cala Blanca) - be sure to keep the sea on your left at all times and you will find the restaurant on the left side, over a white wall and situate right on the rocks by the water. Does one need to say more of such a location ? Well ..... excellent fish good service – BUT it is not cheap and you must book (at weekends at least 24 hours in advance). Plenty of shade and NO MUZAK - just listen to the sea !! Tel: 96 647 1337 : Open 24/7, March - end September : 10:30 - 23:00h (kitchen open 12:00-16:00h & 19:30 - 22:45h) Restaurante LA CANTINA DE JAVEA : Situated right in front of the fishing fleet of Jávea’s port (on the ground floor right around the back – left side - of the one storey building by the fishing boats). Clientele is very Spanish. They are often very busy so you must go early (say 12:30h). Very good prices. Their fish menus consist of the catches of the day. They are serving all day long (and even after the cinema). Tel: 96 579 2190 / open tlj : 7/7. Restaurante SUR : ...at the beautiful Granadella creek (down off the Cabo de la Nao and the No.1 beach of the Marina Alta); certainly the best fish restaurant in Jávea (they own their own boat!). Our absolute favourite for fish and a beautiful location. Sensational puds ! Highly rated in Spain’s Gastronomía Guide. Best to book. Tel : 96 577.1612 / July/Aug daily 10-23h / otherwise open lunch only (closed mid-Dec - end Feb). http://www.restaurantesur.com/ Restaurante MENA: Wonderful position on the rocks at the end of the Las Rotas road (go over Jávea / Montgó road to Denia and turn hard right at bottom roundabout. It was expensive with bad muzak. It also used to be xenophobic but we hear it’s under new management so certainly worth a try…. or drive on

a little further and there’s another good restaurant on the right. 96 578.0943 / f. evenings / http:// mena.restaurantesok.com/aquiok/ detallrest.jsp?id=547&prov=Alicante AND ANOTHER EXCEPTIONAL (FISH) ITEM (retail) ! Outside the Ermita supermarket (by the little church on the Jávea to Jesús Pobre road) at 10:00h on a Saturday morning is to be found an enterprising Dutchman (Arjen) who is selling fresh martjes, smoked eel, rollmops, smoked mackerel, buckling (a herring smoked whole – as opposed to kippers which are smoked flat), smoked trout and potted shrimps ……. AND (only to order) fresh/frozen HERRINGS (mostly with their roes – and at €1.25 each). When did you last enjoy a fresh herring ? Surely the most marvellous of fishes ? Orders to : 667 997300 (every Sat. morning from 10:00h) or argentocorazon@gmail.com [ and inside this supermarket, at Xavi’s excellent meat counter, can be found the very best STILTON in the area ]. Arjen is in MORAIRA on Thursdays 10 - 14h at Tabaira – Palco. INCODNITO < Fish ‘n’ Chips > Jávea, Arenal beach, on main car park. It is not usual for such an establishment to find its way onto this list but it has proved to be very reliable with both fresh fish and chips of excellent quality. 96 577.0068 / f. Sunday.

Join Hands for the Montgo

Following the sad news of the devastation of the Parque Natural de Montgo in the recent fire, a number of local businesses have pulled together to raise some much needed funds. Spearheaded by Tash Lewis (TLS Books), Nicola Franklin (High Street Heaven) and local charity Grant A Wish, the support so far has been overwhelming. There are sealed collection boxes in a number of local outlets, which will be available for donations until Sunday 5th October, the date of the ‘Join Hands for Montgo’ fundraiser. It costs just 1€ to participate, and the aim is to have a human chain stretch the length of Javea’s Arenal Beach. All funds raised on the day will be combined with those from the collection tins and, along with a 500€ donation from Grant A Wish, will be distributed as follows:

Javea Arenal Beach Only 1 Euro 11 am 5th October

50%

Jaspa’s Bar (Balcon Al Mar, Javea)

To Javea Ayuntamiento’s Citizen Participation Scheme, which provides assistance to those directly affected by the fire.

Kelly’s Kitchen (Jesus Pobre)

50%

El Cid (Benidoleig)

To the Bomberos who worked tirelessly during the disaster.

As more local businesses join the crusade, so the list grows, so please contact Tash Lewis for further details:

You can find collection tins in the following locations: High Street Heaven (Javea) TLS Books (Pego) Lenceria Susan (Javea Old Town)

Magnum’s Bar (Oliva) Siesta Group (Gata)

663545962 Javea citizens affected by the fire are encouraged to contact Javea Ayuntamiento to apply for assistance.

The Fire The Montgo Javea & Denia

It is hard to describe the devastation caused by the fire that raged across the Montgo and the foothills that separate Denia and Javea. Amazing that the rescue and Fire-fighting services managed to rescue all the residents who were at risk and saved most of the property that the fire seemed likely to destroy. For a full account of the fire, I think Mike Smith’s article on Javea Amigos sums up the breadth of the destruction. http://www.javeamigos.com/ news/2014/09/1309-01.htm Fay Hughes Smith has given us permission to use some of her photos of the aftermath of the fire in the magazine. These follow on the next few pages, for anyone who has not seen them - it is difficult to encompass the death of over 450 hectares of Natural Park and private land in a few photos, but it is clear how huge the task of restoration will be.

Join Hands for the Montgo Javea Arenal Beach 1 Euro to take part 11 am 5th October

So what are we going to do? What can we do? There will be a need for three main types of help. Physical, Monetary and Logistical. If you would like to help please add your name and details to the Town Hall’s Page here

http://www.ajxabia.com/formularios/ montgo Meanwhile, Mayor José Chulvi has signed a resolution declaring that necessary work to prevent damage and ensure adequate recovery of the landscape after the September 11th fire be considered as “emergency” work. This procedure gives an absolute priority to tasks for which a budget of 116,973 euros has been allocated. The projects covered by this scheme will include protecting the soil and character of the forested areas, the removal of burned trees and those showing signs of infestation, the proper treatment of the surviving species, encouraging the return of indigenous wildlife and the construction of anti-erosion barriers on the slopes. In addition, there will be an improvement of roads and tracks, the restoration of dykes and of the masonry of the terracing which are at risk of collapse. We are very aware of the fantastic job done by the Bomberos and that there have been victims of the fire who have lost property and belongings. On the 5th October please join Tash and Nicola raising funds for both the voluntary fire units and the for unfortunate families who were affected by the fire.

J谩vea Town Hall has renewed the cooperation agreement with the Asociaci贸n de Vecinos Hispan贸filos de Balc贸n al Mar, with 5,000 euros towards support its volunteer fire department. The volunteer group has also received other municipal support during the last year such as the gift of an Amjasa pump valued at 3,000 euros. Freesat is the name of the UK satellite TV service which offers access to the subscription free UK TV channels.

All about Freesat subscription free UK TV And in HD!

Examples of these channels are all BBC TV and Radio channels, ITV1,2,3,4, Channel 4, E4, More4, Film4, Five, Five* and Five USA.

The most popular Freesat receivers are the Freesat HD and Freesat HD+.

In total there are over 170 channels available on Freesat.

These allow you to watch 11 subscription free HD TV channels.

Of which the majority of these can be received in Javea on a satellite dish measuring 100x110cms, with the 125x135cm satellite dish being the recommended size.

These include BBC One HD, BBC Two HD, BBC Three HD, BBC Four HD, ITV1HD, and Channel 4 HD.

Freesat is only available on official Freesat receivers. You cannot get Freesat on a Sky box, although the channels on Freesat are also available on a Sky box (even with no viewing card). You cannot receive Freesat on any of the other satellite receivers being sold in the area. Receivers like the Ferguson Ariva, Iberosat, GI may be advertised as being “Freesat” receivers, or able to receive Freesat, but they cannot.

by Jon Worby

• automatically update any channel frequencies; where as other receivers require the user to initiate a channel scan.

They will be able to receive the same channels that are on Freesat, but they will not be able to receive Freesat. Freesat is basically software that runs the Freesat Electronic Programme Guide, or EPG. This EPG controls the box and makes using Freesat receivers easy to use. The Freesat software: • allows you to have access to an 8 day programme guide, where as other receivers only allow you to look at “now and next” information. • automatically adds channels and edits channel names should they change, where as other receivers do not do this.

On the large TV screens most of us have these days, the difference in image quality between SD TV, Internet TV / IPTV and HD is very noticeable. In recent weeks, the main comment I have had after installing a Freesat HD system has been along the lines of “Wow, that picture quality is so good and clear, compared to the cable / rebroadcaster / internet / IPTV / Android system we have been using.” As a comparison, and simple explanation, normal standard definition TV (SD) produces an image resolution of 576 lines of data. Most IPTV / internet TV systems use this or even a lower resolution. This can result in a “blocky” or blurry” image when viewed on large screen TVs. On Freesat HD, the images have a resolution of 1080 lines of data. That is double the amount of data, hence the increase in image quality. The Freesat HD+ receiver has a built in hard dive which allows you to record your programmes using the simple programme guide. With two cable feeds from your satellite dish, Freesat HD+ allows you to watch one channel and record another channel at the same time.

Living behind these castle walls Castles conjure up tales of brave knights, dungeons, drawbridges and doomed lovers.

Three Castles in Alicante

Some of Alicante’s coastal castles were built as a fortress to keep out thieving pirates while others date from the times when the Moors ruled the land. Many myths and legends have been built up around some of the more magnificent castles while others were totally useless and left to crumble away. Touring through the Alicante region, there are castles in many towns and villages.

Star Wars and star-crossed lovers Santa Barbara castle is one of the finest medieval fortresses in Spain. The golden edifice stands 166 metres above sea level on top of Benacantil mountain. It is everything a castle should be with dungeons, towers, cannons, a moat and tales of woe. It’s been beautifully preserved so you can imagine the cannons blasting the enemy below, arrows firing through narrow slits in the castle walls or running battles through the steep cobbled streets. Work began on the Santa Barbara castle in the ninth century, although older relics from the Bronze and Roman ages have been found on the site.

Sarah Farrell is a journalist and managing director of the online travel guide www.mydestination.com/alicante

Much of the work was carried out by the Moors who ruled much of Spain from the eighth to the thirteenth century.

The castle’s military role diminished and it became a prison in the 18th century before being abandoned. It was only 50 years ago that it was opened to the public. Now it’s a great place for outdoor concerts, picnics, a meal in the restaurant or taking photos of the Mediterranean & Alicante beaches from the castle’s iconic tower. The castle also has an exhibition centre which houses an impressive Star Wars exhibition this year.

The easiest way to reach the castle is by catching the lift at beach level. Before going through the tunnel to the lift, look up at the cliff wall where you may glimpse a person’s face etched into the surface. Known as La Cara del Moro (The Moor’s Face), it is said to be the image of a young Moor who fell in love with a princess in the castle. Her father forbade her to marry her sweetheart and she threw herself over the castle wall to her death. The Moor did likewise and it is his face seen in the cliff.

In Defence of Denia Denia’s hilltop castle can be seen from much of the town, the Montgo mountain and boats out at sea. Although Roman remains have been found there, much of the castle dates back to the eleventh and twelfth centuries during the Arabs’ reign.

The castle stands as a reminder of the town’s importance as the capital of the Marina Alta area. The town prospered under Arabic rule and the castle was built to provide a mighty fortress against intruders and pirates. After the Moors fled when the Christians claimed back the land in 1244, the castle was left to crumble until the 19th century when it was partially rebuilt during a brief French occupation. In the past few years, Denia has been painstakingly restoring the castle and its magnificent walls. Today it’s a favourite tourist destination where visitors can learn more about Denia’s history and enjoy fabulous views of the marina, beaches, port and Montgo mountain. Under the castle is a tunnel which was excavated between 1937 and 1938 to provide shelter for residents during air raids in the Spanish Civil War. It also became a makeshift factory where the Republicans made bullets to fight Franco’s mighty army.

Castle by the seashore Moraira’s unusual fortress stands just 10 metres high on a rock by l’Ampella beach in the centre of town. It seems hard to believe that its main task was to protect the coast from pirates. Cannons were mounted on the roof while slits in the castle walls provided a defence for the men on lookout. The 18th century fortress has two floors and three wings. Over the door is the Bourbon coat of arms. This powerful family ruled Spain when the castle was completed in 1742.

It’s a curious castle in many respects – it’s very compact and sits next to the beach instead of lauding over the town from the top of a hill. It is also a very strange shape with a semi-circular side and another side being straight. This is known as an ox hoof shape. Today, the castle provides a picturesque backdrop for live music, including the Moraira International Music Festival, and wedding ceremonies.

“GOLLY!” Should you be sitting comfortably in the Union Musical, Gata one evening between Monday November 3 and Friday November 7 and a beautiful woman in a plunging evening gown and with a German accent drifts seductively to a man sitting on stage in an armchair, leans over him breathing deeply, grasps loudly and then collapses on him revealing a knife sticking in her back and his response is “Golly” don’t be taken aback.

He is Richard Hannay, a sterotypical British hero whose upper lip is so stiff there is little else he could say and you are about to enjoy the ingenious fun and thrilling action of the most hilarious spy thriller to ever play Gata.

“GOLLY!”

The woman was Annabella Schmidt. Her murder is the start for him of an incredible adventure. To acquit himself of her murder and to save King and country our stiffupper-lip hero will be traversing the length and breadth of the country, foiling a German spy ring, falling in love, escaping a faceless assassin and getting in and out of impossible situations. A ripping adventure likely to keep you on the edge of your seat and having you laugh out loud. Richard Hannay is the creation of John Buchan, the hero of his spy thriller,’ The 39 Steps’ published in 1915. Alfred Hitchcock took considerable liberties with the novel to make his hit movie in 1935 and Patrick Barlow wrote an adaptation of Hitchcock’s film which has been playing to packed houses at the Criterion Theatre in London’s Piccadilly since 2007. It has won ‘Best Comedy’ awards in the UK, USA, France and Australia. How did Hitchcock become hilarious? Not by becoming a satiric target but by being an accomplice – many of the funniest and raciest lines in Mr Barlow’s adaptation come directly from the movie. The Javea Players’ production which plays the Union Musical, Gata from Monday November 3 to Friday November 7 is produced and directed by Cherry Cabban.

Javea Players take “39 Steps”

Curtain-up each evening is at 8pm. Tickets are priced at 12 euros (11 euros for parties of ten and over) and are available from the box office on 96 579 4937 and online at boxofficejp@gmail.com
