Same Community Values Same Ethos Just a different Look
I had hoped that, while we waited confirmation of our ISSN number, Khrystyna would be found and home and well. Not only is that not the case - but concerns have escalated and the search has been extended. I have added the poster to the latest issue of Live in Spain Magazine (as that covers all of Spain and beyond) - I am adding it here in case readers, not in Javea at the moment, were here and spotted her around the time that she disappeared on May 20th. A letter in which she wrote goodbye to her family has changed the nature of the investigation. Khrystyna Savenchuk, a 15-year-old student from IES declared that she had little desire to live and indicated despair over the break-up with her German based boyfriend. Search focus has now moved back on Javea, away from Sagunto (where her mobile phone was found on the afternoon of her disappearance). Given the awful possibility that Kyrystyna may have been suicidal, the Guardia Civil is searching her favourite places on Cap de Sant Antonio, working with the local police of Jåvea and volunteers from Civil Protection, locally. The coastline has also been searched from the sea. In essence, Khrystyna disappeared last May 20. She was last seen about eight o’clock in the Holy Calle Cristo del Mar. Khrystyna left home without her backpack and with no money. Her passport and everyday jewellery were also left - she took only her phone (found at Sagunto). Gaile Editor

Dear Grapevine Friends, It’s a real pleasure to address you again and share with you some of the things that have taken place over the last few weeks. During this time, apart from my work at the Town Hall, I had to attend to my duties as an MP in the Provincial Government. I was also involved in many activities related to the European Election campaign. May I take this opportunity to thank the voters of Xà bia for the confidence they have shown in me and my party the PSOE. Proportionally our percentage of the total votes in Xà bia substantially improved over the 2009 European Elections. During May I had more than 70 engagements, committees, meetings with citizens, plenary sessions both in the Town Hall and in Alicante. I was also present at many events such as the Gala Dinner for the Fogueres de San Juan fiestas, the annual dinner of the Rotary Club, a celebration with the municipal employees on the feast of St. Rita, the opening of the Festival del Mar, gala dinner of the International Festival, a lunch with the Pensioners Association of the Pueblo,
the end of term celebrations at the Institute, and many more events too long to list. I enjoy attending and sharing these moments with the people of my town which give me the opportunity to listen and to talk with everyone.

Once again the Association for Environmental Education has announced the awards of Blue Flags for Xàbia.
The town retains the three blue flags for the Granadella, Arenal and Grava beaches, and the flag for the Club Náutico in the Port.

Almost ten years ago, for safety reasons, a temporary roundabout with bollards, was created near Barclay’s Bank, however the final construction has been delayed by urban development issues in the area.

Xà bia’s Departments of Public Works and Services have now carried out work to improve the aesthetic image of the roundabout, which I believe will enhance the area until such time as the final roundabout can be constructed.

My work at the Town Hall has been very demanding, as both the municipality and AMJASA the municipal water company continue to make improvements to the infrastructure of our town. The well managed water company celebrated the closing of the 2012 financial year with a surplus of 954,000 euros, all of which has been invested in the water network including the renovation of over 2,500 meters of water mains. In addition the Town Hall’s remaining budget surplus from 2013 will be
used to carry out many public works, including a major plan for re-asphalting many roads in urbanizations, which will be a continuation of our previous works. It has taken much effort, but finally we have obtained approval for another major infrastructure improvement. The Alicante Provincial Government will construct new storm drains at a cost of 145.590,73 euros, on the Travesía de Cansalades, Xàbia. This will prevent flooding on the road during periods of heavy rain.

Young Students of Music, as part of Jávea’s band festival starred in their own Prom The Musical Centre of Jávea offered students the opportunity to perform for their families. Led by their teacher Ana Maria Valero, the children performed in front of friends and family and showed how good they sound. The event also included a performance by the young band, under the baton of its director Juan Miguel Bas Cruanyes.

It also allows the student organise the schedule to suit themselves, and to customise the course depending on their interests and the speed they wish to advance. During the first month of the course the students are required to carry out a minimum of 10 hours of online course work. In order to receive certification from the course, it will require a commitment of at least 50 hours of learning in total. The Diputación de Alicante has now announced the registration of a new Spanish courses for foreigners, training that this year may be carried out either online or in person. To register you must send the registration form and a registration certificate endorsed by the Town Hall by email to ciudadanosextranjeros@ diputacionalicante.es Registration is free and will be carried out in strict order of receipt of the registration forms. Registration is open until July 6. As reported by the Help Desk of Xabia, which is under the direction of Councillor Oscar Anton, the on-line option extends learning opportunities. It uses software tools for students and is able to support them in English, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese,

The Junior Girls Handball Team, Municipal School of Jávea, have been crowned the champions of the league by beating Elx in the final at the Palau d’Esports of Javea. On the same day, the juvenile men’s team won the runner-up losing to Augustinians of Alicante. Cllr Juan Luis Cardona, from the Department of Sports, described it as a “breathtaking” season by both teams who debuted this year in handball competitions. Councillor Cardona also gave his congratulations to coach Pepe Hierro, for the “great work, sacrifice and fellowship and good cheer that he has managed to convey to all the children.” The teams gathered at the Palau d’Esports in front of delighted audience, raffling two shirts donated by Barcelona players.

The Protest against Oil Exploration Continues Alan Hermann is so passionate about opposition to the Oil Surveys that he has paddled the 60 miles between Jávea and Ibiza’s Cala d’Hort. Supporting protestors and volunteers from Jávea, used the day before to collect more signatures for the “Javea Diu No” campaign addressed to the European Parliament. The Councillor for Tourism, Antonio Miragall and Sports Councillor, Juan Luis Cardona, took advantage of conclusion of the Triathlon event in the Arenal to encourage more sig-
natures from competitors and spectators. Later in the afternoon, volunteers moved to the Port to continue to collect signatures. At dawn, Alan departed from Club Náutico Jávea, to follow a surfing course towards Ibiza, paddling for more than 12 hours to prove his radical opposition to the surveys. News in via Andrés González (Reuters). Repsol could begin drilling for oil off the Canaries within months after the removal of the last legal hurdle to a $7 billion oil exploration project on Tuesday 24th June. In 2012, Spain’s government granted permits for exploration off the coasts of the islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, but they were frozen while courts heard a number of appeals on environmental grounds. Thousands of people marched in different cities and towns on the islands earlier this month to protest against the plans, which have been opposed by political parties, unions, environmental groups and other organizations. “The seven appeals against the government’s royal decree...have been rejected,” a Supreme Court spokeswoman said on Tuesday. The court’s written arguments will be published in the coming days, she said. Spain produces almost no oil or natural gas and imports all of its hydrocarbon needs. Environmental groups including Greenpeace, Oceana and the World Wildlife Fund - which have campaigned against the oil exploration plans - decried the ruling, saying a
spill in the area would harm protected species, coral reefs, tourism and fisheries. “The game is not over here. The decision of the Supreme Court affects the exploration drilling where they will detect whether there is commercially viable oil. Now we’re going to mobilize at a European level against this,” said Mario Rodriguez, director of Greenpeace Spain. Of the seven appeals rejected by the Supreme Court, one was from the local Canary Island government, which initially supported the project but then turned against it. Activists argue the exploration could hit tourism, the islands’ main source of income. Greenpeace’s Rodriguez said the potential damages were great compared with returns that he said would meet Spain’s hydrocarbons needs only for two or three years. Repsol, which leads a consortium including Australia’s Woodside Petroleum Ltd and Germany’s RWE Dea AG , has said exploration could start in the third quarter and commercial extraction could begin in 2019 if findings are positive. Repsol will spend $350 million on the first two explorations and would invest $7 billion during the first five years to 2019 afterwards. The production phase, expected to last 20 years, would require about $5.2 billion to extract crude oil.

On Monday, June 9, 2014. the Mercat Municipal de Javea welcomed the Regional Contest II artisan wine. The event that brought together producers from Javea, Gata Jalon and Benissa. The lunch for 30 enthusiasts included a tasting of participating wine. After lunch, a jury of four local sommeliers, a specialist and a representative of Terra Javea, the organisers decided that the winner of the Tinto section was Pau Ruiz de Gata de Gorgos,

Augustín Rubio Alcover on Vicente Escriva
On Friday, June 6, A presentation was made by author Agustín Rubio Alcover of his work in the series on Documenting Editions of the Film Archive, which reviews the biography of Vicente Escrivá. The event was at the Municipal Library. The Councillor for Culture, Empar Bolufer, opened the event by presenting the author and highlighting his role related to the world of cinema. Juan Bta. Codina decsibed his role mediating for the author in July 2012, he also noted the presence of the author’s father, Agustín Rubio Vela also was in the room, as a medievalist and historian from whom the author has learned many strategies as a researcher. The author, who spoke next, spoke about Vicente Escrivá’s life with special reference to Javea. His quirky personality shaped by his difficult childhood, his life and personal evolution process, and his work of which
greatly emphasized his short film ‘Fishers of Jávea’ and his film ‘Island Man’ by comparison with those ‘Dulcinea’. He reviewed the various production stages . The author described a man of the cinema of lights and shadows, successes and failures that filled a void in the history of Spanish cinema. Nieves López-Menchero, highlighted the work of Agustín Rubio over three and a half years and noting the role of collection of studies and conservation of materials Film Archive. There was a lively discussion with anecdotes from a lady who had participated in the short film “Fishers of Jávea ‘where she played a child role. She described events during the month and a half of filming of the short film. The author signed and dedicated copies of his work for many in the packed room.

The Education & Culture Councillor Empar Bolufer, attended a special performance of “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, which ended the Theatre Workshop of Practical English 1st of the IES No.1 of Javea. “The Dickens Players” group is one of several multilingual educational programs of the centre that runs in collaboration with the English Department through Professor Elizabeth Borrell, along with Nina Davies,
Alma Dorndorf and Anne Mackay, British residents very involved with the association. At the end of the performance, attendees sampled cakes made by the Kitchen Cooking Workshop 4 Fun, which is also part of the same program multilingual language program which also collaborates with a group of British residents.

A really Happy Dog Many dogs who are brought to us mourn for their former life but this is not the case with Boira. She seems to be an embodiment of happiness. She is here in our shelter, because her owner had to move out of Spain and from the first moment she only kept playing, jumping, running and enjoying her life here together with the other dogs. She is a super lively young female, ready to start a new life in a new environment. She is still young enough to be trained and if you give her a lot of space, long walks and a good education you will surely have a nice family dog.

What a bad luck! After being in the pound for a while, people adopted him, although we told them that Sidney was a very active dog who would need some training. After not even a week, he was back again as he indeed was too active, did not listen to commands and climbed over the fence. Without even trying to train him, they brought the poor dog back. He is now totally confused and unhappy. If you are willing to give him a home, train him (he likes to work with people and is so young), and want to keep him for longer than a week...please come to the pound. We are more than happy to tell you more about Sidney and give you training advice. Sidney walks very well on the lead and is a good and social boy. Apasa was founded 15 yrs ago by a group of Spanish, English and Germans. It started from humble beginnings: a few concrete kennels and no fencing, but over the years it has grown so much and we now have upwards of 200 dogs, we also have quarantine kennels for when new or sick dogs are bought in. We work with the town hall and the police in collecting dogs that have been lost or abandoned. We need the support of our members and all the fundraising events to keep us going. The paint inside the fully refurbished Correos was barely dry when the need for urgent structural repair work on the porch and upstairs was uncovered. The porch area and the floor above had to be gutted for safety and the rebuilding work to repair the building is major. They are making good progress however and have made huge efforts to keep the Correos open and functioning normally, during the whole process.
They have even built a temporary covered entrance way to give everyone safe access to the building. Inside, however, is very smart. New counters, some seats (for those of us weary from the haul up from the car park) so that we can rest while we wait and best of all a new ticketing system so that we don’t have to stand and queue, we can relax and chat with our neighbours. Best of all the staff, now they less stressed, are processing clients faster.

The Correos
The repair of the porch of the main Coreos in the Pueblo is because of movement in the Porch structure which has affected the rooms above and more importantly public safety. The Post Office building, itself, is privately owned, but the Porch is part of the Municipal Property. The emergency work, which will strictly adhere to cleaning up the the damaged areas, will last two or three weeks and have a budget of 29,000 euros.

Now that the Fogueres Saint Joan 2014 have finished we look back at the traditional gala dinner and debut of the members of “Quin Calvari”. In pairs, the boys and girls who starred in this year’s festivities walked in their finery to applause from the audience. Hi Everyone! Today we are going to talk about a topic which often is an issue for debating between several computer users. And this is… Are Mac users safe of viruses?

We have all heard the sentence ‘there are no Mac viruses’, and it’s a wellknown topic in most of Mac-related forums. When a person expresses a concern about viruses, someone (often someone identified by the forum as an expert) will invariably respond with, “No way! There are no Mac viruses.” Usually, no additional information is given. This is quite annoying, because that is a partial truth that hides and denies the greater reality. So what is the truth, then? On one hand, quite a lot of people don’t understand basic malware terminology. The technical definition of a “virus” is a malicious program that installs by itself, hiding itself inside another program or file, and spreads itself to other computers. The word “malware,” on the other hand, refers to all classes of malicious software: viruses, worms, trojans, etc. The average user refers to all malware as “viruses,” without an understanding of the strict definition of the word. There’s nothing wrong with that, and it should be the job of those with more technical knowledge to educate those who have less, and not to play word games with them or deride them for a minor wrong-use of terminology, especially on a subject that we are all quite concerned about. On the other hand, it is only mostly true that there are no Mac viruses. People claiming that there are no Mac viruses are conveniently forgetting about Word macro viruses. Those do fit the technical definition, but nobody
counts them anymore, since they are mostly just an annoyance on the Mac, and that is if you still encounter them at all. There are also a number of cases of proof-of-concept viruses in the history of Mac OS X. The Inqtana and Macarena viruses, for example, were never actually seen “in the wild,” but they were created as proof that viruses could be created that would affect Mac OS X. Even recently, there have been proof-of-concept viruses announced, such as the Clapzok virus that was created by a security researcher and announced last year. It’s true that none of these have actually been used maliciously, to anyone’s knowledge, but they still exist and should not be so quickly dismissed. Finally, it’s important to understand that the most important aspect of the definition of the word “virus” is the capability to install itself. In other words, unlike a trojan, which relies on fooling you into opening something you shouldn’t and can therefore be avoided through cautious behavior, a virus can infect you without you doing anything that you might consider risky. All the other details, like injecting itself inside other applications, are just fluff. There is actually quite a bit of malware for the Mac that would fit that principle. Flashback, for example, works in the background so many users don’t even know they are infected. This is the most well-known case (it infected over 600.000 Mac computers), in which all that was needed to become infected was to visit a hacked web site with Java enabled in the web browser. Technically speaking, Flashback (and all the more recent malware that uses similar tricks) is not a virus. Practically speaking, I certainly would

call it one! Mac infections are so rare that for many of who switch to OS X after years on a PC with Windows, it kind of feels like you’re on a different dimension: the OS is fun, clean, and safe. But just because Mac malware is rare certainly doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, or that it couldn’t surge to Windows-like proportions one day. Currently there are multiple malware programs circulating designed to infiltrate Mac OS. These programs are similarly designed to look like legitimate antivirus programs and tell users that their Mac is heavily infected with viruses. The program then harasses people into providing credit card information to purchase fake anti-virus program to remove the infection. This is a ploy to get your personal information. Often times these programs are automatically downloaded but cannot be installed without the permission of the user, by way of an administrator password. People who are not aware of these malware threats can unknowingly install these programs on to their machines. Most of these threats come from plug-ins and add-ons, like for browsers, which are usually distributed outside official app stores, so not everyone is a target for them. As like with a PC with Windows, depends on what you do on your computer! Well, that is all for now. You’ll hear ¡me gusta! A lot – it’s what we say in Spanish when we like something – but it doesn’t actually literally translate as I like it! Really – literally - it means ‘it pleases me’ - the me is ‘me’ & the gusta is ‘it pleases’ , so you’re saying ‘me it pleases’ – all a bit back to front – what I call ‘Yoda Mode’ . Star wars fans will know what I mean!

So you need to disengage the brain a little for this – but when you get your head around it you’ll see that it’s really easier to deal with than other verbs! When I was first taught GUSTAR, my Spanish teacher told us the only GUSTA (he/she/it pleases) & GUSTAN (they please) exist. A year or so later I was watching TV when I heard ¿Te gustamos?

I thought I was hearing things – after all, gustamos didn’t exist according to my Spanish teacher - & it wasn’t in my verb book either. But the more I thought about it the more certain I was that I had heard it & taking the context into account they had definitely been saying ¿do you like us? A bit of research later I discovered that yes, the other parts of GUSTAR do exist – but most of the time you won’t need them, so we can pretty much forget about them!

So, what we need is the pronoun – that little word which tells us who is being ‘pleased’ (who likes it) & GUSTA or GUSTAN. So we have 6 pronouns: me = me ; te = you; le = him/her ; nos = us; os = you all & les = them. • So - Me gusta nadar - I like to swim (me, it pleases, to swim) • Te gustan las manzanas – You like apples (you, they please, the apples) • Le gusta correr – He likes to run (him, it pleases, to run) • Nos gustan las fresas – We like strawberries (us, they please, the strawberries. • ¿Os gusta ese coche? – Do you all like that car? (you all, it pleases, that car?) • No les gusta la música Jazz – They don’t like Jazz music (them, it doesn’t please, the Jazz music) You might have noticed that there’s another column on the table which I haven’t mentioned. That’s because a lot of the time you won’t need it. You do need it though, when talking about someone else. From my examples above : Le gusta correr – He likes to run….. but who is ‘he’ … or it might even be ‘she’ because the le doesn’t tell us who we are talking about. Without saying who is being pleased, we have no idea!. So if Juan likes to run, we have to say A Juan le gusta correr …. & the ‘A’ is essential – we’re saying ‘to Juan, him, it pleases, to run’ Similarly, No les gusta la música Jazz, doesn’t actually tell us who doesn’t like Jazz – it could be anyone! But if I say A mis vecinos no les gusta la música Jazz. - you know that I’m talking about my neighbours! Terminolgy and Why Cheap Sky Deals are Suspect
Terminology You may have often heard about Freeview, Freesat, Free to air and free to view. But do you know what they mean? Many people and even some satellite installers are often confused about their meaning, and can mean people buying the wrong type of equipment. Freeview is the name of the consortium that operated the UK’s digital terrestrial TV service. It is transmitted from land based masts, and received by a TV aerial. Freeview IS NOT available in Spain. The Freeview signals simply do not reach into Spain.

Freeview is not available via a satellite dish. You cannot connect a Freeview box to a satellite dish and expect to watch UK TV – they are two different incompatible systems. Spain does not have an equivalent of Freeview (the consortium), but it does have a digital terrestrial TV service - TDT. It offers about 40 channels via a TV aerial, and has the bonus that most UK and USA imported programmes have their original English audio available as well as the “dubbed” Spanish audio. Freesat is the name of the satellite TV service which offers access to the free TV channels, many of which are on Freeview. Freesat is only available on official Freesat receivers.
You cannot get Freesat on a Sky box, although the channels on Freesat are also available on a Sky box (even with no viewing card). Free to air channels are channels that are available free of encryption (so no viewing card is required) and subscription free. They are available on Freesat and Sky boxes. Examples include BBC channels. Free to view is not “Freeview”. Free to view channels are channels that are encrypted (so a viewing card is required) but are subscription free. Free to view channels are not available on Freesat. They are available on a Sky box. Examples include Sony Movies, Motors TV and LFCTV. Why do I mention this? Well I often hear of people saying “bring a Freeview box to Spain and use it on your dish to get channels” and “connect your Freeview box to your dish” and “you can get Freeview in Spain”. Over the years I have been called out to people who, based on what they have heard and understood, have brought a Freeview box to Spain and confused as to why a) it will not work with a satellite dish, and b) it only gets Spanish TV channels and no UK channels!

Some installers have been selling systems that can access the full Sky TV package, for a lot less than the official Sky monthly charges.
This is because Sky, and other pay TV providers, have been upgrading their encryption software to prevent their channels being access via cardsharing.
They do this by selling access to illegal cardsharing systems. A satellite receiver, usually an Iberosat or Ariva, is connected via the internet to a server that provides the access codes to unlock the Sky TV channels. Obviously illegal, but that is probably not mentioned by the installer.

The Grand Provincial Lodge of Valencia
In February 2011 the Provincial Grand Master of Valencia, Right Worshipful Brother Barrie Mansell, launched the Festival 2014. The idea first took shape when he attended a number of annual assemblies of other Provinces in Spain. Those Provinces, as part of their annual report, detailed the amount of money given by individual Lodges to charity and he was amazed at the considerable sum of money that was involved. He thought that if individual Lodges could raise so much money just imagine the amount that could be raised collectively by a Province. The purpose of the Festival was twofold. It was hoped that not only would it raise money, but also bring together all the Brethren of the Province to work, jointly, towards a common goal. In the case of the Province of Valencia this was to raise funds for Cruz Roja. Â The target set by the PGM was for the Province to purchase ambulances during the life of the Festival to be used by Cruz Roja throughout the Valencian Community.
This was without doubt a challenging target and to be achieved it would require all the Lodges to work hard both individually and collectively to raise the monies need. To encourage participation it was essential that the Festival had an official start date, in this case the 1st June 2011 and an end date, 31 May 2014, with clearly stated aims and targets that would be totally open and transparent to all members of Valencia Province. A Festival Committee was established to co-ordinate the whole event and to liaise with Cruz Roja so that their requirements were taken into account. On the 19th May 2013 the Provincial Grand Master handed the first cheque and ambulance to F. Javier Gimeno Blanes, the President of Cruz Roja in Alicante. This event took place at the Hercules Football Club, Alicante and Jesus Garcia Piparch, President of the Hercules Football Club afterwards invited the Provincial Grand Master and his team to enjoy the match that followed. All the Javea Branches have worked hard to make a major contribution to the appeal.

By the end of the project, the Brethren of the Province of Valencia raised over €165.000 towards their Festival Target. Many and varied money raising events took place throughout the Province. Activities included Dinner Dances, Firework Evenings, Las Vegas Evenings, Treasure Hunts, BBQ’s, Hog Roasts, Carol Concerts, Sponsored Walks, Mountain Climbs and many, many other fund raising events. It has been really encouraging that those events were organised not only by the Brethren but also by their wives, partners, girlfriends, family and friends and so the Festival has definitely achieved the objective of bring the whole Province together with this common cause. This is an amazing achievement and the Festival has now purchased their 2nd vehicle which has noew been presented. This time it was a Homeless Support Vehicle in Cruz Roja Ambulance Livery. This type of vehicle will, as its name implies, be designed to assist people who, for whatever reason, find themselves homeless and in need of medical or social support facilities. It will also include personal shower fa-
cilities, supply fresh clean clothing and general support to individuals. This is a completely new and innovative move for Cruz Roja and will have a significant impact on the way that they deal with social issues in the future. It is anticipated that such a vehicle will receive major publicity and the Province of Valencia are proud to be there at the beginning of this new venture in providing help for the homeless of Spain. The organising of the Festival was without doubt a challenge and it was a huge learning curve for its participants. The difficulties of dealing with a major organisation and the legal requirements necessary in a task of this size cannot be underestimated but the end result has been more than worthwhile. The Festival culminated with a Provincial Gala Night on 31st May 2014. At the end of the Gala - which raised a further 2,000 Euros in the one evening, I asked Barrie Mansell, The Provincial Grand Master what plans the Province had for new projects and fund raising activities as this had been so succuessful. As he was kind enough to take the time to answer my question in full I am very pleased to include his response below.

Groundwork According to preliminary data from the INE survey of 2,012 homeless in that year 5.3% of all homeless people in Spain, were at Valencia. • 31.9% of people have less than a year without having a housing, • 23.6% are without housing for between one and three years and 44.5% spent more than three years without their own accommodation. • The 89.0% of the overnight homeless stay every night in the same place. • 30.7% of people suffer from chronic diseases, • 15.2% of the homeless have a recognised disability. • We noted that 51% of the homeless have been victim of crime or of aggression. Objective: To meet the basic needs of those who are found in situations of severe social problems and social exclusion Specific Objective: - Provide homeless cover their daily basic needs: complementary feeding and hygiene. - Intervene from proximity to people who are most at risk of exclusion - Provide comprehensive user support, and can lead to different CRE projects and local area banks for possible development.

The Mobile Day Centre is a resource provided where the homeless are located, providing the basic necessities needed, offering the following services: direct care and help, laundry (washer and dryer), showers, complementary feeding. The operation is advertised by spoken word. It serves a link to integrate these people into the network of standard assistance thereby promoting the inclusion of these people into society.

The documentary “Art i Montgo Mort”, available in five languages thanks to the Friends of the Museum of Javea On Jávea. Wednesday, June 25, 2014. The Documentary “Art i Montgo Mort” was aired. It accompanies the permanent exhibition of archaeological finds in the Cova del barranc Migdia and can be heard in five languages (English, French, German, Castilian and Valencian) thanks to the Friends of the Museum association of Javea (AMUX). Fabio Bezoari’s version is shorter than the original version academic version made by Cirne Foundation. This 7.5 minute film shows the excavations that led to important archaeological discoveries of the Bronze Age in the gully Migdia Cova. AMUX has posted their version on their channel “amuxabia” from YouTube and it is available, above. La Cova Migdia the gully has unearthed evidence of human life dating back some 5,000 years, including the funeral ceremonies dating back to the third millennium BC oy some of the best cave paintings found in the area. The exhibition explains the important features of the remains found in the Cova, as well as showing the whole process of excavation and subsequent cataloging and analyzing the findings. A virtual reality simulation allows visitors to experience the inside of the cave, which is almost impossible to visit
due to its difficult position at the top of the cliffs. She is a trained librarian from the Biblioteco Nacional and worked in the Biblioteca del Institute Geográfico Nacional and the Institute of Social Studies of the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. “I realised that my training and experience in cataloguing would be very useful to the project”, commented Milagros, “and it would also be something that I would enjoy doing. I have just retired to Xàbia. It is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the history of our area.” The AMUX group has started work on sorting the 12 archive boxes of material that Michael Stephenson donated and would welcome more assistance. No professional experience
is necessary. For example, apart from cataloguing, people will be needed to take new photographs, research background information, write and translate the exhibition texts. Anyone interested in

Forest fires ‘could be thwarted 20 years before they break out’, says WWF Forest fires could be prevented 20 years ahead of their happening if the government would invest sufficient funds, says Spain’s branch of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Effectively, a fire which breaks out this summer could have been avoided with proper planning in 1994, the leading environmental charity claims. Every year, an average of 15,600 wildfires break out – mostly in summer – of which 28 are raging infernos wiping out massive areas of land and threatening the safety of property and people. For full story see: ThinkSpain Call to form a human chain against oil prospecting project This Saturday June 28th at 6.00pm everyone is invited to come to the Arenal beach in Xàbia to form a human chain as a protest against oil propecting in the Mediterranean. People are asked to wear black and paint their hands black. The slogan is “Nos sobra la energía” (“We have plenty of energy”). Once the chain is formed, a manifesto against oil exploration and for renewables will be read. This is part of the Xàbia Diu No campaign coordinated by the Town Hall to reject oil prospecting in defense of the environment, tourism and fishing industry. Rebeca Velasco, is a marine biologist (cum tour guide) who runs a new sustainable tourism project in Altea (Alicante) along with her partner Daniel Gilabert. In a pioneering venture for the area, they have partnered with local fishermen who still use traditional techniques to showcase their artisan work. Working out of small boats near the coast, the fishermen catch octopus with cadufos, traps spaced out along an underwater line. They also use the trasmallo, a three-net combination used to capture bottom-dwelling fish and crustaceans. “Right now there are just six traditional fishing

El Pais in English Port project starts after Summer The long-awaited project to re-arrange parking along Avda Jaime I and extend pavements in the Port will now begin after the summer. The contract for the works was awarded in January, to have begun after Easter. First step to link Montanyar with Calle Genoa The abandoned Villa Sarita on the Montanar sea front will be demolished over the coming weeks to make way for a road to link the coast road with Calle Génova. Before demolition, Xàbia’s archaeologist will carry out a survey to document the house and the tosca stone arches will be conserved. The cost to the municipal coffers of purchasing the house and its land was some €500,000, while demolition will cost 50,000. The resulting dirt road will enable temporary access, at least for pedestrians over the summer, and after the season a further €200,000 will be spent to build a proper asphalt road with pavements etc. Residents have also asked if it is possible to open pedestrian access to the sea accross a bank-owned building plot near Calle

Moves to supply desalination water to the south of the region Xàbia’s Mayor Chulvi and CEO of Amjasa have held a meeting with the mayors of Benitachell, Teulada, Benissa and Calpe to look into developing a common network infrstructure of pipes and tanks so that water for Xàbia’s desalination plant can be used by towns in the south of the region. Currenty, Xàbia already supplies Benitatxell, Teulada and Gata and the Denia network is only 400m away. The problem is connections with Benissa and Calpe. There is enough capacity in the plant, the problem is distribution. From XAD: Xàbia ofrece.... Fires have destroyed twice as much forest as last year Forest fires in the Comunidad Valenciana destroyed 1003 hectares in the first five months of the year, almost double the area over the same period last year (524ha). The reasons are complex, but the amount of inflammable brush and dry conditions with abandoned agricultural land, bad management, carelessness and out of control agricultural fires. CHINESE Restaurante < The WOK BUFFET > : Jávea, at the Barclays roundabout. Very good. Recently refurbished and now with an extensive choice of shellfish included in their bargain price. Eat all you like for Euros 9.95 (special price for kids under 7). Go early (12:30h for lunch, 19:30h for dinner) when the huge spread is at its best. Attentive service. No muzak. Well, go discover it for yourselves. Here is, indeed, a real surprise. A huge range of really good, copious tapas far cheaper than the Arenal beach front ! The size of the portions means this is perhaps 50% of the cost of the beach establishments ? Be careful how much you order - you may not be able to finish. Ideal for hungry kids ! The process of making Papier Mâché was invented in France, and first came to England during the 1670s, but little use was made of it until the middle of the 18th century. Paper was pulped, mixed with glue or gum mastic and chalk, and varnished when dry. By another process sheets of paper were caused to adhere to each other by a paste formed of flour and water and size. In either case formation was by pressing into wooden moulds, after which the completed object was finished by sizing. Papier Mâché was, at this time, principally employed for making imitations of stucco and plaster ornaments to be applied to ceilings and walls, a fashion which seems to have started in France. Chamber’s Cyclopedia (first published in 1753) refers to its use for ‘frames for pictures, fine embossed work, and other parts of furniture’. In 1772 Henry Clay of Birmingham, a japanner, patented a type of papier mâché subsequently japanned which became extremely popular, leading to his appointment as Japanner-in-Ordinary to the King and Prince of Wales. His wares were built up of successively laid sheets of paper pressed on to a wooden mould until the desired thickness had been obtained, after which the object was stoved, carefully smoothed and coated with japan and varnished. The colours employed were black, crimson, and green – the most sought lacquer colours from the Orient. He largely produced panels for screens, furniture, and so forth. Tea-trays sometimes being painted to special order. Decoration with bronze powders of several colours dates from about 1802, green bronze being employed for foliage and graphite as shadowing. After 1843 stencils were sometimes employed for parts of bronze pictorial decoration, such as landscapes.
Mother-of-pearl was introduced into the industry by Jennens & Betteridge of Birmingham about 1825, being at its best before 1840. Papier-mâché furniture was made in England and France, but English production was on a very large scale, the industry being located at Birmingham and Wolverhampton. In the former city the principal makers were Jennens & Betteridge. The best furniture was made in the 1840s, and there is a noticeable deteriation in taste in the specimens exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851.

PAPIER MÂCHÉ
Almost everything was made in this material, from small boxes and teapoys to firescreens, chairs, settees, footstools, tables, beds and even cabinets and secretaires. Much was exported to America, and Jennens & Betteridge even maintained a New York office for a time. Decoration was elaborate and often of good quality. Edward Haselar and George Neville were well known for their flower-painting, and David Sargent for ferns. The Oriental style was developed in the 1830s in Birmingham by Edwin Booth, and this work is usually of high quality. Fine painting on trays of this date, often took its subjects from such popular artists of the day as Landseer. In America the Litchfield Manufacturing Company started, in 1850, to make papier-mâché screens, boxes, small tables, and especially clock-cases,the latter being their speciality. They employed artists from England, and used a process similar to that of Henry Clay, but their products were not so well finished. In modern times the same methods are used to create contemporary pieces and papier-mâché is an excellent substitute for producing sculptures without clay.

In Sybil Kent’s revue, ‘Happy Days Are Here Again’ which plays the Casa de Cultura in Javea’s lovely courtyard, the Plaza de Baix from Monday June 30 to Saturday July 5, audiences will be able to relish the just a little sauciness of the First World War recruitment song,’ I’ll Make a Man Out of You’. Sung by the inimitable Amanda Dean it will be very surprising if there is a red bloodied male in the audience not willing to ‘take the shilling’. The theme of Sybil’s revue is how the Brits have kept smiling through all the trials and tribulations of the past century. Song played a major part in helping them do so. And it is perhaps amazing how so many World War One songs were pressed back into service for the second Great War and still remain in the public’s consciousness today. Enjoy being reawakened to the fact at the Casa de Cultura.
Enjoy with the songs, sketches,monologues and dance that have helped keep us Brits smiling through the thick and thin of it.
