Frank O. Bowman III Floyd R. Gibson Missouri Endowed Professor of Law Curators’ Distinguished Professor, School of Law

Faculty-Alumni Awards

"I don’t have any pithy mottos, I’m afraid. I am, by nature, long-winded."

As one of the most prolific writers, lecturers and scholars in the nation on the subject of impeachment, Professor Bowman has been in high demand. His work on the subject dates back to the trial of President Clinton. His most recent book, “High Crimes and Misdemeanors: A History of Impeachment for the Age of Trump,” was published in 2019. Members of the House and Senate sought his counsel during the Trump impeachment trial. He wrote multiple articles during the Trump impeachment controversy for publications such as The Atlantic, the Washington Post, Foreign Affairs, Politico Magazine, and Slate, was quoted regularly in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the Chicago Tribune, the Boston Globe, Reuters, the Associated Press, and other print and online outlets, and appeared on broadcast networks around the world, including PBS, CSPAN, MSNBC, Al Jazeera, Bloomberg News, the Canadian Broadcasting Company, CTV (Canada), Sky News (UK), France24, ABC Radio (Australia), CGTN (China), and the BBC World News. Professor Bowman joined Mizzou’s School of Law faculty in 2005 and teaches Criminal Law, White Collar Crime, Law and Religion, and a host of other subjects, in addition to holding an appointment as Dean’s Visiting Scholar at Georgetown University Law Center. His teaching extends beyond the classroom, combining theory and black-letter law with practical skills-training, and, in some cases, even theater. Under his direction, The Historical and Theatrical Trial Society (HATTS) has put Jesse James, John Brown, William Quantrill, and even Dr. Victor Frankenstein on trial before the general public. ■ Holds degrees from the Colorado College (BA ‘76) and Harvard Law School (JD ‘79) ■ Honored by the MU Graduate Professional Council with the Gold Chalk Award, 2017 ■ Shook, Hardy & Bacon Excellence in Research Award, 2006 and 2010 ■ Co-author of the “Federal Sentencing Guidelines Handbook,” the best-selling treatise on federal sentencing He and his wife, Professor Robin J. Bowman (of the MU School of Health Professions), have three children and live in Columbia, Missouri.

David Braun

PhD '97 Professor of Plant & Biological Sciences; Director, University of Missouri Maize Center Director, University of Missouri Plant Growth Facilities Missouri's weather is not quite as temperate as California's — but as a graduate student, David Braun set that aside when choosing to enroll in Mizzou's nationally-recognized plant biology program (and fell in love with Columbia in the meantime). After earning his PhD in Biological Sciences, he returned to California for his postdoctoral fellowship at UC-Berkeley, then braved the colder climate of Pennsylvania to establish his career as a researcher and professor.

■ Director of the MU Maize Center, Chair of the MU Plant Growth Facilities Oversight Committee, member of the Interdisciplinary Plant Group's Executive Committee. ■ Helped design and establish MU's East Campus Plant Growth Facility ■ Maize Genetics Executive Committee member and Conference Steering Committee member, 2015-2017 ■ Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, 2018 ■ MU Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Research and Creative Activity, 2019 Braun and his wife, fellow MU maize geneticist and Professor of Biological Sciences, Dr. Paula McSteen, live in Columbia, Missouri.

9

Faculty-Alumni Awards

"Work hard, be observant, and think deeply about your data. Success in research is 99% perseverance and continued striving in the face of failure."

In 2010, Braun's notable work in maize genetics led to his recruitment by Mizzou's Division of Biological Sciences, where he has established the leading research program in the world investigating carbohydrate partitioning in corn and sorghum; research that has immediate, practical applications for food security and energy production. As a professor, he leads general undergraduate courses as well as highly specific genetics lab training, with multiple postdoctoral fellows and graduate students as mentees and co-authors on research. His groundbreaking work has made him the recipient of over $17 million in competitive federal grants.

Bruce J. Loewenberg

BSF '61

Owner, Show-Me Salers As a manager of the football team, Bruce Loewenberg was lucky enough to witness the legendary 1960 Tigers dominate the Big Eight Conference, including their Orange Bowl victory over Navy and Heisman Trophy winner, Joe Bellino. His loyalty and dedication to Mizzou haven't wavered since.

"Winning isn't everything, but losing is absolutely nothing! Beat kU!"

He is a proud alumnus of the College of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources (CAFNR); his donated Salers cattle — a breed renowned for their calving — established CAFNR's current herd. And though he primarily works with cattle, tigers hold a place near his heart as well. Loewenberg's contributions to Tigers for Tigers, a student-run organization on campus, funds conservation efforts on behalf of wild tigers, of which there are as few as 4,000 left. "Faurotious," the bronze tiger that guards the foyer of the Reynolds Alumni Center, is another one of his gifts; a visible token of his years of advocacy, service and leadership on behalf of the University he loves.

Wilson Freyermuth has a peculiar knack for remembering his students' names, despite teaching one of the law school's largest lectures. His secret? He commits them to memory while joining each student for lunch. Students visit his office to add their name to the sign-up sheet on the door, but find themselves returning for advice and mentorship over the course of their academic career.

Freyermuth has, quite literally, written the book on property and real estate law; his three published textbooks are used in law schools across the country, along with numerous treatises and articles. He has been nominated as "Reporter" by the Uniform Law Commission — a singularly rare accomplishment for any lawyer — on four separate occasions, making him responsible for drafting laws that have been enacted in throughout the country. His scholarship and service have cemented him as a leader within MU's School of Law, and a central figure in producing generations of proud Mizzou Law alumni.

He was awarded the University's highest honor for teaching, the William T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence, in 2007, and was honored as a Faculty-Alumni Award recipient in 2017. Additionally, he has served campus and the School of Law through his work on multiple staff and advisory committees, as well as through volunteer work for his students' organizations; on one notable occasion, he lectured while dressed as Lucius Malfoy, a recurring Harry Potter villain.

Old Missouri Old Missouri, fair Missouri! Dear Old Varsity, Ours are hearts that fondly love thee. Here’s a health to thee! Every student, man and maiden, Swells the glad refrain, ‘Till the breezes, music laden, Waft it back again. Chorus: Proud art thou in classic beauty Of thy noble past. With thy watch words, honor, duty, Thy high fame shall last.
