PIG CITY GARDEN CALENDAR By Daniel Marvin WEEK of 19-25 Apr. ‘10

In each and every area where our readers start in on their plans to get the 2010 garden going the problem associated with deer and their appetites for our vegetables, fruits and flowers too pose a challenge. After we moved into the home we now rent on Ten Eyck Avenue we quickly learned that the deer are in control and that the village government is of little or no help at all to keep them out of our respective gardens, orchards, flower beds and berry bushes. As I write this I recall this morning when Kate and I counted 16 of those beautiful White Tail creatures slowly going across lots between our home the next door neighbor. I do understand why the Village does not wanting hunting parties roaming the area with loaded weapons - a sure fire recipe for disaster! And, it seems whatever we do to improve tha plant life just makes the deer’ diet improve. We like a beautiful lawn and so do the four legged creatures. I will do my best to keep you informed about the Pig City Garden

90 YEARS AGO April 1920 - DeRuyter voted that electricity be furnished by the Vesta Corset Co. for street and interior lighting. Arrangements were made for setting poles and wiring the stores and residences. Contributed by Darla Snyder, Tromptown Historical Society

and how it is doing in its new area that has been provided so unselfishly by our friend Claudia. Please say a prayer for this pig city gardener because I have a very highly infected right foot and am undergoing treatments to get it back to normal. Can’t do anything in the garden for the next few days so will ask that you help me through prayer. I do thank God for what Bob and Claudia have done to help me get a start! Happy Gardening!

In Honor of Secretary’s Week

You PC types can use the modern lingo to “Lable” Secretarys in some arcane nonsensical fashion but I prefer what’s tried and true. I never had a problem respecting a Secretary, they were always the one you went to if you really needed action. They always knew where all the bodies were buried and where the extra toilet paper was. They stand out as some of the brightest, on-the-ball people I ever knew. I will always have a warm place in my heart for the Secretarys of the world. Ladies and Gentlemen, I salute you. (Especially you, Aunt G, I LOVE your stories.) The Editor. As soon as you sit down to a cup of hot coffee, your boss will ask you to do something which will last until the coffee is cold. ~Author Unknown “No one who achieves success does so without acknowledging the help of others. The wise and confident acknowledge this help with gratitude.” Author Unknown

Secretary’s Day (revised) By Mary E Lacey

They don’t say good morning, just line up at my desk. Would you do this, have you ordered that, there’sno time to rest. I needed this yesterday, I forgot to say, but please handle this other thing, I must have it today. But if they have a problem, they always come along I don’t know how to do this; can you help me? If there is a personal problem, I’m a sounding board. I’ll listen to my “children” no matter what their problems are. This is a typical secretary’s day, waiting on my people. Taking orders or listening to what they have to say. I really don’t mind, I feel like I’m someone. But if I have to put up with this, darn it, I want more pay!

Let’s Talk Now and Plan For Next Season! I think the boss described below missed Secretary’s Day….

A Secretary’s Rules For The Boss

“Rules Of Work” 1. Never give me work in the morning. Always wait until 4 PM and then bring it to me. The challenge of a deadline is refreshing. 2. If it is really a rush job, run in and interrupt me every 10 minutes to inquire how it is going. That helps. Even better, hover behind me, and advise me at every keystroke. 3. Always leave without telling anyone where you are going. It gives me a chance to be creative when someone asks where you are.

CAZENOVIA ELECTRIC Residential & Commercial Installation & Service

662-3927

4. If my arms are full of papers, boxes, books or supplies, do not open the door for me. I need to learn how to function as a paraplegic and opening doors with no arms is good training in case I should ever be injured and lose all use of my limbs. 5. If you give me more than one job to do, do not tell me which is priority. I am psychic. 6. Do your best to keep me late. I adore this office and really have nowhere to go or anything to do. I have no life beyond work.

Henry J. DeLap

7. If a job I do pleases you, keep it a secret. If that gets out, it could mean a promotion. 8. If you do not like my work, tell everyone. I like my name to be popular in conversations. I was born to be whipped. 9. If you have special instructions for a job, do not write them down. In fact, save them until the job is almost done. No use confusing me with useful information. 10. Never introduce me to the people you are with. I have no right to know anything. In the corporate food chain, I am plankton. When you refer to them later, my shrewd deductions will identify them. 11. Be nice to me only when the job I am doing for you could really change your life and send you straight to manager’s hell.

Ask about the TAX CREDIT available for Energy Star Products

12. Tell me all your little problems. No one else has any and it is nice to know someone is less fortunate. I especially like the story about having to pay so many taxes on the bonus check you received for being such a good manager. 13. Wait until my yearly review and then tell me what my goals should have been. Give me a mediocre performance rating with a token cost of living increase. I am not here for the money anyway.

Bacteria in Household Dust May Help or Hinder Childhood Asthma ScienceDaily.com (Apr. 18, 2010) — Bacterial populations found in household dust may determine whether or not a child living in that home develops asthma, according to research published in the April 2010 issue of the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology. Recent studies have shown household dust to be a source of highly diverse and abundant bacteria, yet it remains largely unexplored. In the study, testing on samples of collected house dust demonstrated that bacterial populations are greatly impacted by the presence of dogs and cats and whether or not children attend day care. Additionally, dust samples collected from homes of infants, with or without pets and varying day care attendance, showed differences in dust bacteria were linked with asthma development in children “These results provide the first evidence that the dominant

bacterial populations in household dust are significantly influenced by environmental variables such as domestic animals and day care attendance,” say the researchers. “Further, the dominant bacterial populations are significantly correlated to asthma-related outcomes, supporting the hypothesis that the types of microorganisms present in homes in early life may play key roles in the development of childhood asthma.” Asthma has risen drastically in the last decade and some are attributing the increase to an altered immune response triggered by exposure to evolving microbial communities. Farms and day care centers are associated with asthma prevention due to high levels of microbial exposure, while actions that reduce bacterial populations in the home may actually increase allergy development. “These parallels suggest that unidentified differences in exposure to microbial communities in the industrialized world may have fundamentally changed human immune responses, thereby enhancing susceptibility to autoimmune and allergic diseases,” say the researchers.

First Evidence That Chitosan Could Repair Spinal Damage ScienceDaily.com (Apr. 18, 2010) — Richard Borgens and his colleagues from the Center for Paralysis Research at the Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine have a strong record of inventing therapies for treating nerve damage. From Ampyra, which improves walking in multiple sclerosis patients to a spinal cord simulator for spinal injury victims, Borgens has had a hand in developing therapies that directly impact patients and their quality of life. Another therapy that is currently undergoing testing is the use of polyethylene glycol (PEG) to seal and repair damaged spinal cord nerve cells. By repairing the damaged membranes of nerve cells, Borgens and his team can restore the spinal cord’s ability to transmit signals to the brain. However, there is one possible clinical drawback: PEG’s breakdown products are potentially toxic. Is there a biodegradable non-toxic compound that is equally effective at targeting and repairing damaged nerve membranes? Borgens teamed up with physiologist Riyi Shi and chemist Youngnam Cho, who pointed out that some sugars are capable of targeting damaged membranes. Could they find a sugar that restored spinal cord activity as effectively as PEG? Borgens and his team publish their discovery that chitosan can repair damaged nerve cell membranes in the April 16 issue of The Journal of Experimental Biology.

HUNTER'S PARTY RENTAL "Let Us Bring Your Occasion Together." Floyd & Howard Hunter Rental Specialists

Having initially tested mannose and found that it did not repair spinal cord nerve membranes, Cho decided to test a modified form of chitin, one of the most common sugars that is found in crustacean shells. Converting chitin into chitosan, Cho isolated a segment of guinea pig spinal cord, compressed a section, applied the modified chitin and then added a fluorescent dye that could only enter the cells through damaged membranes. If the chitosan repaired the crushed membranes then the spinal cord tissue would be unstained, but if the chitosan had failed, the spinal cord neurons would be flooded with the fluorescent dye. Viewing a section of the spinal cord under the microscope, Cho was amazed to see that the spinal cord was completely dark. None of the dye had entered the nerve cells. Chitosan had repaired the damaged cell membranes.

TOM AT 315-662-7412 - Cell 352-812-1020 Next Cho tested whether a dose of chitosan could prevent large molecules from leaking from damaged spinal cord cells. Testing for the presence of the colossal enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), Borgens admits he was amazed to see that levels of LDH leakage from chitosan treated spinal cord were lower than from undamaged spinal cords. Not only had the sugar repaired membranes at the compression site but also at other sites where the cell membranes were broken due to handling. And when the duo tested for the presence of harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS), released when ATP generating mitochondria are damaged, they found that ROS levels also fell after applying chitosan to the damaged tissue: chitosan probably repairs mitochondrial membranes as well as the nerve cell membranes. But could chitosan restore the spinal cord’s ability to transmit electrical signals to the brain through a damaged region? Measuring the brain’s response to nerve signals generated in a guinea pig’s hind leg, the duo saw that the signals were unable to reach the brain through a damaged spinal cord. However, 30·min after injecting chitosan into the rodents, the signals miraculously returned to the animals’ brains. Chitosan was able to repair the damaged spinal cord so that it could carry

Kinney directed the Soldier to drag that patient outside to make more room in the small stone confinement. As he began stabilizing and packaging the second critical casualty, Staff Sergeant Kinney ordered the other flight medic to prepare to hoist up the first patient. During the second hoist iteration, the aircraft and the small building came under heavy effective machine gun fire. Despite rounds cracking overhead and impacting in the terrain around him, Staff Sergeant Kinney helped his fellow medic complete the hoist, while attempting to locate the origin of the enemy ambush. Staff Sergeant Kinney discovered that the fire was coming from a ridgeline immediately to the north

of his location, opposite of where the Apache aircraft were engaging. He contacted the Apache gunships over his MBITR radio and began redirecting rocket and 30-mm. gun runs onto the heavy machine gun location, effectively suppressing the fire. The hovering Medevac aircraft had already taken two direct hits while inside the ambush kill zone. If not for Staff Sergeant Kinney’s instinctive action the entire crew and two patients onboard would have undoubtedly been lost. As the Apache aircraft continued to suppress, Staff Sergeant Kinney finished packaging his third critical patient and began to assess and treat the remaining three patients, who suffered from multiple shrapnel and gunshot wounds. As his fellow medic departed up the hoist, Staff Sergeant Kinney immediately began preparing the third Skedco Extraction Litter.

Staff Sergeant Kinney discovered that several of the required hoist straps were missing. Without hesitation, he procured a rope and began using it to prepare a harness that would secure the patient’s Skedco to the hoist hook. Staff Sergeant Kinney now moved his three remaining patients to cover as he radioed his Medevac aircraft, requesting extraction. As the firefight continued around him, the pinned down squad took an additional casualty. Staff Sergeant Kinney quickly triaged this Soldier and placed him with the other three casualties awaiting hoist extraction. While waiting for his aircraft, Staff Sergeant Kinney maneuvered under fire to an adjacent building in effort to locate the enemy fighting positions and possibly relay them to the Apaches, but the fire ceased as soon as he repositioned. The Medevac aircraft hovered into position and Staff Sergeant Kinney took the first ambulatory patient into the open and secured him to the Jungle Penetrator (JP). The enemy began taking pot shots at Staff Sergeant Kinney and his patient. As soon as the patient was off the ground, Staff Sergeant Kinney

scrambled back to cover and retrieved a second ambulatory casualty. As he exposed himself once again, the bullets began cracking by and impacting the wall behind him. Regardless, he secured the patient and waited until the JP was off the ground until retreating to cover. Once more, he repositioned to an overlooking building for a better vantage point, but was unable to get a fix on the sniper’s location. Returning for the final litter casualty, Staff Sergeant Kinney directed two Soldiers to help him drag the Skedco litter into the clearing. Staff Sergeant Kinney began connecting his makeshift Skedco rigging to the hoist’s rescue hook. With the sporadic enemy fire still kicking up dirt all around him, Staff Sergeant Kinney dutifully held the tagline for several minutes while

When the cable was fully retracted Staff Sergeant Kinney realized that his makeshift harness ropes were too long and the litter still hung several feet below the aircraft. He calmly instructed the crew chief to lower the Sked and instructed the pilots to “do a lap” in order to limit their exposure to enemy fire while he sat in the open and shortened the ropes. At this time, an eighth Soldier was wounded in the leg by the sustained enemy fire. When the aircraft returned and the cable sent back down, Staff Sergeant Kinney sent the latest ambulatory casualty up on the JP after controlling his bleeding. Lastly, Staff Sergeant Kinney began his second attempt at hoisting up the makeshift Skedco, this time doing so successfully. With all five of his casualties onboard, Staff Sergeant Kinney quickly secured his gear, and checked for any additional wounded. He then rode the JP up to his aircraft. En route to the Forward Surgical Team (FST), Staff Sergeant Kinney single handedly treated five critical patients, controlling bleeding, administering pain control, dressing wounds, and starting IVs. The multi-systemic wounds Staff Sergeant Kinney treated alone in the back of his cramped aircraft included partial amputations, femoral bleeding, and multiple gunshot and shrapnel wounds. Upon landing at the Medical Treatment Facility, Staff Sergeant Kinney assisted in unloading his patients and preparing them for surgery once in the FST. Staff Sergeant Kinney’s heroic actions on this day exceeded the call of duty and speak volumes to his selfless dedication to the welfare of his fellow Soldiers. On countless occasions, he demonstrated a willingness to lay down his own life for those he is sworn to protect. By calling Apache fire onto the location of an enemy heavy machine gun during an ambush, he saved the lives of countless Soldiers on the ground, as well as the lives of an entire Medevac crew who had assumed a stationary hover over the kill zone. Staff Sergeant Kinney’s selfless actions under fire, his level head during a deteriorating situation, and improvisations when all was otherwise lost, reflect the highest credit upon himself, the Medevac, Task Force Out Front, and the United States Army.

When a woman in my office recently became engaged, a colleague offered her some advice. “The first ten years are the hardest,” she said. “How long have you been married?” I asked. “Ten years,” she replied. --Tonya Winter

The road to wisdom? Well, it’s plain And simple to express: Err And err And err again But less And less And less.- Piet Hein A wise man hears one word and understands two.- Jewish proverb The art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook. - William James

“What is that sound?” a woman visiting our nature center asked. “It’s the frogs trilling for a mate,” Patti, the naturalist, explained. “We have a pair in the science room. But they’ve been together for so long, they no longer sing to each other.” The woman nodded sympathetically. “The trill is gone.” --KathyJo Townson We rushed our four-yearold son, Ben, to the emergency room with a terrible cough, high fever, and vomiting. The doctor did an exam, then asked Ben what bothered him the most. After thinking it over, Ben said hoarsely, “I would have to say my little sister.” --Angela Schmid The teacher in one of our local grade schools was showing a copy of the Declaration of Independence to her pupils. It passed from desk to desk and finally to Luigi, a firstgeneration American. The boy studied the document reverently. Then, before passing it on, he gravely added his own signature. --Katherine T.
