I am a 27 year old architect. I grew up in Beirut where I completed my five year and a half Bachelor of Architecture degree at the Lebanese American University. I did an internship both in Beirut and Paris with Karim Nader Studio and Nicolas Dahan Architecte DPLG respectively. I then worked in the international design and build firm PSLab. After that I decided to expand my education hence traveling to Barcelona to pursue an additional Masters degree at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia. There I chose the research line of self-sufficient buildings where I met award winning architect Enric Ruiz Geli of Cloud 9. I had the chance of collaborating with him on selection of educational and professional projects. While assisting him in conducting his master class in IAAC, I was also taking part in his office on a selection of projects such as: the ISD Campus in Shenzhen, China, the refurbishment of his personal office and home in Barcelona, Spain, the Citizen Center and Big Tree projects in Changwon, Korea. Other than having architecture training, I studied music and am a meditator/yoga practitioner by traditional training. I have a passion for poetry, philosophy, etymology, history and new scientific discoveries.

1.a Geometry of Wind, Barcelona, Spain 1: personal projects

(group work, responsible for digital drawing simulation with Rhino & Grasshopper + physical model construction) Project description: this work investigates the closeness of MACHINIC PARAMETERS to URBAN PARAMETERS by employing geometry as the vocabulary of dialogue. After obtaining a resultant geometry from machine parameters coupled with wind force, its relevance in therefore tested in the new “superilla” urban typology of Barcelona. The project is suggestive of applying a CARTOGRAPHIC VOCAB out of which an ACTIVE PUBLIC SPACE could emmerge.

1.b Electronic Eames, Eames House, LA (individual work) Project description: Not only was the Eames House a break through in construction being among the first prefabricated houses of the 20th century, but the Eames as a group promoted a distict home-style characterized by well being and eclecticism. The proposed retrofit in this project aims to reactivate the Eames site as a “playground for architectural discourse. Not only does is propose a structure dialogue by presenting a new electric field/ ion technology driven building that undermines geometric stability, but also by incorporating animal life (bats) into the ecology that characterizes human habitation and thus undermining seclusion of living. It is an urge to move domesticity from the box.

1.c Strip Lamp Project description: applying a KERFING PATTERN with varying cut-out dimensions in laser cutting that define varying degrees of bendability. WOOD THEREFORE BEHAVES LIKE PAPER and could be formally manipulated as such.

1.d Geometry of Termination (individual research) Project description: this research stems from the personal observation and conviction that all geometry moves from the gross to the subtle, from the mass to the particle. The paradox here is that physical or geometric termination is a recipe for volumetric expansion. We can see that with nuclear detonations, with volcano eruptions, geyzers, the splashing of a wave on the shore, the flowering of a popcorn, the sewing of cotton candy from a heap of sugar, the structural expansion from a romaneque to a gothic cathedral. And very importantly in trees. It is about occupying a volume greater, and not necessary for the net mass to exist. This happening of expansion or termination is geometrically consistent irrespective of the arrangement of matter involved. Underwater experiments are conducted to simulate this notion. A site is located to architecturally infer.

2.a Big Tree Monument, Changwon, Korea CLOUD9 2:professional practice

Responsibility: 3D modeling with Rhino & Grasshopper (renders by GRAPH) Project description: designing a public monument for the city of Changwon that would become a city symbol. The monument is also a public building accessible by people. The main structure is inspired by Shukhov’s steel towers. It is tripartite in arrangement: -groudfloor: dome with oculus -main structure with tree barks -patio and platform with natural & hydroponic trees & “pollinating poles”

The design is a code of cells characretized by transparancy as an architecture quality that promotes KNOWLEGE SHARING. The building is also distinguished by a “rambla” space in the middle which adds to the visibility of the program. The project incorporates green technologies such as: -SOLAR COLLECTION -WATER COLLECTION (via etfe skin) -WATER FILTRATION -MICROCLIMATES -GREEN ROOFS

3.a 3: teaching

Masters Teaching Assistant IAAC I have had the opportunity to be part of organizing and tutoring in the SELF SUFFICIENT BUILDINGS STUDIO in the MASTERS IN ADVANCED ARCHITECTURE program in the INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED ARCHITECTURE OF CATALONIA for two consecutive years. Firstly, when I was still a student, and secondly attending as a professional whilst carrying on my office involvement with ENRIC RUIZ GELI / CLOUD 9

3.b Organizing IAAC & Virginia Tech Workshop In the Spring of 2018 I set off to the United States along with the Self Sufficient Buildings studio in IAAC to conduct a workshop guided by Enric Ruiz Geli in Virginia tech. The aim of this educational “experiment” was to merge both cultures of education: the computational/digital fabrication approach of IAAC on one hand, and the analog, site analysis, craftsmanship oriented culture of Virginia Tech. Nonetheless, being a tech institute, Virginia Tech’s architecture students also had the chance to see their school in a new light and to inter-activate efficiency between their architecture studios and tech labs. The students went through the exercise of designing a university campus, working in different “clusters” of knowledge while retaining individual input.
