CHAIRMAN WILSON EXCITED ABOUT THE FUTURE OF LYON

PERRY WILSON WAS ELECTED CHAIRMAN of the Lyon College Board of Trustees last spring. At age 38, he is one of the youngest board chairmen in Lyon’s history. “I am flattered and honored that the Board of Trustees would place such a great responsibility in my hands,” Wilson said in a September interview. “I am also very excited about the future of Lyon College, and I am grateful that I have the opportunity to play a significant role in that future.” Wilson, an attorney with the Barber Law Firm in Little Rock, joined the Lyon Board in 2009. He has served on the Education Committee, the Institutional Advancement Committee (which he chaired), and the Executive Committee. However, his connection to Lyon College began long before he became a trustee. His father, Mike Wilson, was a longtime member of the Lyon Board. The elder Wilson died suddenly in 2008, but he had instilled in his son a love for education and an appreciation for Lyon College. 6

“My father truly had a passion for education, and his involvement with Lyon College was a natural extension of that passion,” Wilson said. “I think that my Dad’s example in focusing on education in the state of Arkansas made a great impression on me. My Dad told me that dedicating his time to education was very rewarding for him because he was able to help create opportunities for students and see the fruit of his labor rather quickly in students who succeeded as a result of the opportunities that he helped to create. I have followed in my Dad’s footsteps in this regard, and I have been fortunate enough to personally experience exactly what my Dad described to me.” Wilson became a director of the Barber Law Firm shortly before his father died. Afterward, he took over several family businesses that his father had led. It was a difficult time for Wilson and his family, but he told Arkansas Business when he made the publication’s “40 Under 40” list in 2011, “It was a tough time for me, but it was something that my Dad had inadvertently groomed me for very well.” The Lyon College Piper
