CIRCA 1930 the serpentine top rail with scroll carved ears above a pierced and carved interlaced splat and drop in seat, raised on blind fret carved square chamfered legs; comprising four armchairs and eight side chairs (12) 56cm wide, 97cm high, 44cm deep Purchased Sotheby’s, Billingshurst, 17 September 1991, lot 276, “The Contents of West Marden Hall”, former home of John Frederick Lambton, 5th Earl of Durham Note: The Callow of Mount Street firm was originally founded in 1841 by Thomas Callow. The name went through a number of variations, changing to Thomas Callow & Son in 1852 and Oscar Callow in 1925, but consistently used its smart Mayfair address as an identifier. The firm appears to have made and sold a variety of objects, but specialised particularly in small silverware objects and riding equipment. They are listed in Charles Dickens Junior’s 1879 ‘Directory of London’ as the official Royal whipmakers. Provenance: Farley Hall, Surrey £3,000-5,000
