413§ HA795/9 BENNO SCHOTZ (1891-1984)

JAMES KEIR HARDIE Plaster maquette with bronzed patination, unsigned 60cm high Note: James Keir Hardie (1856-1915) was one of the main founders of the Labour party. Benno Schotz was commissioned to produce a bust of Hardie, which was to stand in front of the council house in Old Cumnock. Later casts were ordered for his constituency in Wales, one for the House of Commons and one for Glasgow. Schotz then decided to conceive a small maquette for a statue of Keir Hardie which was put forward as a memorial to him in 1957 and sent to the Labour conference for approval. However, the maquette was rejected, because according to Schotz ‘I gave Keir Hardie big hands, clumsy shoes, an old suit, all the things that made him look a worker.’

£600-800
