A.L.S. declining invitation from Mr Angerstein, 2 pages, Stow Hall, 24 Nov. 1824; and other material (quantity) Provenance: John Julius Angerstein, contained in metal box, lettered “John Julius Angerstein, Norfolk & Suffolk Estates. Angerstein (17321823), London businessman and Lloyd’s under-writer, was a patron of the fine arts. It was the prospect that his collection of paintings was about to be sold by his estate in 1824 that galvanised the founding of the National Gallery, London. He had two children, Juliana, who married General Nicolas Sabloukoff of the Russia Service, and John Angerstein, M.P. (1773-1858). Sir Luke Schaub (1690-1758), British diplomat, chargé d’affaires at Vienna 1715-16, and at Madrid 1719-20. He was envoy to France 1721-24, special envoy to Poland 1730-31 and envoy to Switzerland 1738-43. One of Schaub’s daughters, Frederica Augusta, married, in 1767, William Lock, who, with his wife, long dispensed a generous hospitality at his residence, Norbury Park, Mickleham, Surrey. Baroness Sophia Charlotte von Platen und Hallermund, later Sophia Charlotte von Kielmansegg, Countess of Darlington and Countess of Leinster (1675-1725) was the half-sister of King George I, being the illegitimate daughter of Ernest Augustus, Elector of Hanover. (162998). In 1724, Louis Phelypeaux, comte de St. Florentin, and later marquis and duc de la Vrilliere, (1705-77) married Amelie Ernestine de la Platen. £800-1,200 30

Farnham Burke, wax seal in metal box attached, in red morocco gilt presentation box (2) £300-500 161 [James Hogg] - Commonplace book of Leonora Dirom of Mount Annan, Dumffrieshire with manuscript verses [including The Green Pears of the Yair], riddles, quotations from Byron, Walter Scott , Joanna Baiille, Sir John Malcolm, Cowper, & others, verse “Inscription for a Grotto finished in the garden At Mount Annan 18th June 1821”, verses inscribed to Sir Walter Scott “Oh, thou whose magic breathing strain...” , satirical verse relating to the erection of the Melville monument in Edinburgh, anecdotes, engravings and printed extracts, pencil drawing of Bridekirk [Cumbria], pencil drawing initialled A.C.B., 1816; album; note signed by Miss ?Buffen dated 1808, compiled by Leonara Dirom, Mount Annan, c. 1801-1821 Note: In this scrapbook were, formerly, two autograph poems by James Hogg: Robin’s Awa, and The Skylark [sold in our rooms, 10 June 2009, lot 246 and 247]. The poet James Hogg worked occasionally for General Dirom of Mount Annan, Dumfriesshire, in the Scottish borders at this period. Hogg wrote a poem The Harp on the Hill on the death of two of Lieut. General Alexander Dirom’s daughters, and Hogg’s practical work, The Shepherd’s Guide (1807) was dedicated to General Dirom. Colour photocopies of the two poems have been loosely inserted where they were originally placed. £250-350
