championship opener in Moate. They leaked another four goals (0-7 to 4-9) in their next outing against champions-elect CastletownFinea/Coole/Whitehall before securing a much-needed 0-13 to 1-6 victory over Ballinagore. But further defeats to St. Mary’s (17 to 5-13) and Ballymore (0-3 to 0-14) left Shandonagh facing a dreaded relegation playoff against Garrycastle’s second team in Ballymore. The signs looked ominous for the men from the outskirts of Mullingar when a brace of Alex Gardiner goals helped Garrycastle to a 2-2 to 0-4 half-time lead. But Shandonagh put in a muchimproved second half display to take 0-9 to 2-2 lead with time almost up. However, Gardiner forced extra-time with Garrycastle’s only point of the second half from a 45-metre free. The sides couldn’t be separated until two minutes from the end of extra-time when substitute Ken Rabbitte fisted home the decisive goal which gave Shandonagh a 1-13 to 2-7 victory and ensured their intermediate survival.
