6 Concession Ltd. was established in 2007 as part of a joint venture to construct, maintain and operate the section of the M6 motorway from Ballinasloe to Galway. The parties involved in N6 are Globalvia, Sacyr and PJ Hegarty. All the shareholders are represented on the board of directors and there are individuals seconded from the shareholder companies on the senior management team. The senior management team is headed by General Manager Gareth Gallagher. Overseeing first of all the successful construction of the N6 motorway and now charged with operating the route, including management of the toll plaza thereon, N6 Concession has as its base an administration building beside the toll plaza at Cappataggle, Ballinasloe, County Galway. This is where we caught up with Kevin McGrath, General Manager of Operations, who explained what the main objective of the company is in terms of delivering customer satisfaction: “The main aim of N6 Concession at the time of construction was to deliver the motorway infrastructure between

Ballinasloe to Galway on time. Now that the project has entered the operations phase, the aim is to maintain the network in accordance with the contract requirements and to the standard that has been achieved on similar projects that the parent companies are involved in. Customer satisfaction on such a scheme is of paramount importance and N6 constantly strives to ensure that all queries are answered in a timely fashion.” Obviously, the schedule is a hectic one all year around with so much traffic using the motorway, but is there a peak period for the business? “From the point of view of maintenance, the winter season is the busiest, particularly during the harsh winters that have been endured over the past few years. Summer time also brings its challenges with more traffic on the road resulting in more breakdowns and minor incidents that need to be reacted to.” Between the toll plaza and the maintenance department, a total of 50 people are employed by N6 Concession Ltd. – certainly a significant number in the times that are in it (or, indeed, in any times!).

Kevin points out that the staff members are instrumental in the ongoing success of the business: “As it is a service that is provided, staff are the key element to the success of the business. Without a flexible workforce, the business would not be able to meet the demands that a 24 / 7 / 365 working day / year brings.” As General Manager of Operations. Kevin’s role involves liaising with the shareholders to ensure that parent company interests are addressed and ensuring the quality systems that are applied throughout the group are implemented on this scheme. Another aspect of the role involves reporting to the National Roads Authority on an ongoing basis to ensure that any issues that are raised by them and others are addressed and that the requirements of the Operations Contract and that Annual Performance targets are met. Looking to the future - and specifically the company’s hopes / plans for the forthcoming calendar year - he reveals: “Hopes for 2012 are for growth in the economy, which should lead to increased activity on the roads. Plans are to continue to maintain the infrastructure in the manner that we
