expected winning start in a group which contained two reserve sides from senior clubs. Duleek / Bellewstown’s second string provided the opposition in round two with the game played in windy conditions at Simonstown. Again it was an easy win for Kilmainham who finished up 1-13 to 0-5 victors. Danny Butler took the scoring honours with a goal and two points and Mark and Denis Newman, Pat O’Sullivan and Jonathan Quinlan were others to show up well in attack. Kilmainham’s third round outing against near namesakes Kilmainhamwood at Kilberry was much closer with the seniors of only four years earlier being edged out on a 1-10 to 0-12 scoreline. The ‘Wood, who were in their second season down in the junior ranks, got off to a good start with a brace of points to gain an early advantage, However, Kilmainham settled and a goal from Danny Butler in the first half proved to be a vital score. County senior of a few years ago, Barry Lynch, was in outstanding form at midfield and Mark Newman put over four points. Kilmainham led by four points in the last quarter before their opponents got the deficit down to the minimum but were unable to get any closer. Kilmainham welcomed Michael Newman home from his travels for the fourth round tussle with Summerhill which turned out to be another minimum margin game with the returned player showing he hadn’t lost his scoring touch with a contribution of seven points spearheading his side to a 0-11 to 0-10 success.
