Michael Malone first started driving buses back in 1977 and he has seen many changes in the coach hire industry in that time. He spoke to Irish Trucker about the challenges facing the sector and the continued success story of his company, Piltown Coaches.

iltown Coaches is a family run coach hire company based in Kilkenny with over 22 years experience in the business. Over time, they have established themselves as a leading coach operator in the southeast of Ireland. Established in 1991 by Michael Malone, Piltown Coaches operate all size and specification coaches and minibuses and Michael’s sons Brian and John are also involved in the running of the business. “Dedication, hard work and attention to detail,” was Michael’s immediate response when asked what were the secrets behind the company’s longevity. He also added that no job is too big

or small. “It’s a very competitive business, you can’t decide when to work and when not to work. We take every job as it comes obviously at a competitive price. “We pride ourselves on providing top quality service to our customers and we’re fortunate to have a dedicated and loyal staff.” Michael started driving buses in 1977 and this experience has enabled him and his company to develop a reputation for providing a quality and personal service to their customers. They pride themselves on the family orientation of the business and their team of dedicated long serving staff. “When you have three of the family able to drive it takes the pressure off,”

explained Michael, “it helps with lining up drivers for jobs.” Piltown operates a modern fleet of luxury Van Hool coaches appointed and maintained to the highest standards. They presently have seven different capacity coaches to ensure groups of all sizes can be catered for. “We have a fleet of 10 buses, five large coaches, three medium range and two mini-coaches. “We carry out all types of work – contract work for Bus Eireann, school contracts, third level college services, foreign students, sport clubs, coach tours and all types of private hire. “We’re on the periphery of the tourism sector.
