16 years. My father would have been in haulage before me as well, so it’s very much in the blood, you could say.” How did Richard come to the decision to set up as an owner-driver? “A fella called to me one day about exporting sows to Duffy’s in County Galway and I decided to take him up on the offer. I bought my first lorry – a Scania 143 – and just built it up gradually from there.” It has been a case of ‘steady as she goes’ ever since. Richard hasn’t lost the run of himself, happy to grow the business gradually in accordance with demand rather than taking any rash risks. The policy of prudence has served him well. Today, the fleet comprises three Scanias – two R500s and a 124 420 rigid – and Richard also operates two state-of-the-art, specialist Houghton-Parkhouse double-deckers; versatile livestock trailers that are ideal for any job. As for the actual nature of his day-today activities, Richard reveals: “I run two or three lorries a week into England and also do runs here in Northern Ireland and into the Republic of Ireland. I bring cattle from the South to the North and cattle over to England. It’s mainly cattle these days but I also bring one load of sows from Donegal down to Cork once a month.”
The trucks and trailers are hard-working and Richard leaves no stone unturned in ensuring that they are in tip-top condition at all times. Regarding maintenance and servicing of his vehicles, he notes: “I do most of the maintenance myself. I’d also get Sean Toal of Toal Truck Services in Middletown to do some of the work – he’d be known throughout the UK for Scania servicing and repairs.” It’s always a brave decision to set up your own business but Richard McBride hasn’t looked back. He has worked extremely hard to build his business up and the proprietor of Richard McBride Livestock Haulage says he has no regrets: “We’re fairly busy at the moment, thankfully,” he confirms. “I have to say I’m very happy with how the business has gone for me. Things are working out okay. I know a lot of people have been badly affected by the downturn in the economy but so far it hasn’t affected me at all. “If anything, I’d say I’m in the right line of work because agriculture seems to be keeping the whole thing going. Agriculture is really strong at the minute and there’s a big demand for this service. “We run a tight ship and we are always on time. We place a major emphasis on health and safety and have an excellent track record.
