the work suddenly dried up. It was sink or swim time for the Midleton man. “The first thing I did was cut back on the number of trucks and trailers I had. I couldn’t justify having six trucks when there wasn’t the work for them. I’m back to one truck now, concentrating on lowloader work, and am I happy out with that. I don’t owe anybody any money, which is a great thing to be able to say after the tough years the country has been through,” he says. While Mark is confident that the industry will recover, he hasn’t noticed a pick-up in his business as of yet. “I’m just tipping away, the same as I have been for the last four or five years. I’m lucky to have such good customers who have stuck by me…” Mark’s two biggest customers are Lagan Asphalt in Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork and KM Plant Sales in Cloyne, Co. Cork. He has been working for Lagan Asphalt for the past seven years, moving plant such as pavers and rollers throughout the Munster region for them. Lagan Asphalt is part of the Lagan Asphalt Group which
also comprises Lagan Bitumen and Lagan Macadam. Lagan Asphalt tender for and carry out contracts at a local and national level in both the public and private sectors. The company has been involved in many of the new motorway projects undertaken in Ireland in the past decade. Lagan is a onestop shop for minor civil engineering works, realignments, planing, surfacing, anti-skid and road stud, and road marking installation. Innovation in asphalt and surfacing technology is employed where possible. Mark also carries out low loader work for KM Plant Sales. Typically, he collects heavy plant from KM’s customers, brings it to their yard in Cloyne for maintenance or repair before moving it on to the ports in Cork or Dublin for export.
