It was a banner year for Lynn University Athletics in 2013-14 as the Fighting Knights continued to show they are atop the nation both athletically and academically. Women’s golf won backto-back national championships, giving the program five and the University 22 in total; Men’s lacrosse made their debut as the 14th sport for Lynn; two programs finished atop the nation in academics; Bobby Campbell Stadium was unveiled to the world; and the oldest program in school history collected a milestone victory. Fans, alumni and student-athletes will look back at this year with fondness and wonder. All of the triumphs, achievements and successes of the Fighting Knights are detailed within this 2013-14 Annual Report but here is a sneak peek into this past year’s accomplishments: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Lynn University introduced a new brand on April 29th, for the Fighting Knights. The University collaborated with student-athletes, student leaders, faculty, staff and community supporters to develop new brand guidelines and a new visual identity to champion Lynn’s champions. The Fighting Knights are winners of 22 national championships and 31 conference titles. New Lynn University Fighting Knights Brand Identity Featuring a shield and knight’s helmet, the new Fighting Knights logo represents spirit, service and strength. The shield exemplifies service and team spirit. The Fighting Knight helmet symbolizes nobility and leadership. Facing forward, it greets opponents with confidence. Its blue and white face signifies physical and mental strength, intimidating with both brains and brawn. Championship icon An emblem of victory in battle, the Lynn Championship Sword represents the University’s 21 (and counting) national titles. Color and typography Lynn has added gray to its traditional blue and white color palette for athletics. Gray expresses maturity and intelligence. Lynn Blue epitomizes confidence and integrity, and white stands for good and represents humility. All three colors will be incorporated into Fighting Knights uniforms, apparel and promotional items starting in fall 2014. The new Fighting Knights logo font slants forward, as if rushing headlong into battle. Its sense of motion represents the university’s agility, speed and forward-thinking culture. New uniforms for Lynn’s athletic teams will feature a variation of the university’s Adobe Garamond typeface, which has been enhanced to ensure that it reproduces well on uniforms, apparel and promotional items.

Lynn University has seen 46 names over 13 induction classes enshrined in its Athletic Hall of Fame. On Tuesday, April 29, the Fighting Knights paid tribute to four more alumni, Julien Carsuzaa (Men’s Tennis) Andrew Farmer (Men’s Golf ), Gabe MacDougall (Baseball) and Victoria Weltz (Women’s Tennis), as the Class of 2014 was inducted at the Annual Student-Athlete Awards Show. In addition, the late Dr. Francisco Rincon and his family were presented with the Hall of Fame Distinguished Service Award, honoring his special contributions to Lynn University and its Athletic Department. He is the second honoree of celebrated award. The Class of 2014 became the 14th class to be inducted into the Lynn University Athletic Hall of Fame. Women’s Tennis leads the way with nine members, followed closely by men’s soccer with eight, women’s soccer with seven and administrators/coaches with six selections. Baseball is next with five picks while women’s basketball, men’s golf and men’s tennis each have three honorees. Men’s basketball, women’s golf and softball all have two selections and volleyball holds one pick.

Lynn University continued to upgrade its facilities in the 2013-14 school year. These renovations were put forth through generous donors and Blue & White funds. The largest upgrade was the dedication and opening of Bobby Campbell Stadium on March 26, 2014. Construction of the new stadium, which would be home to Lynn’s eight-time national champion soccer teams and first-year lacrosse team, concluded in March 2014. The lighted facility with covered stands and a central plaza seats 500 spectators was designed by the Gensler architectural firm. 2013-14 Completed Projects • Bobby Campbell Stadium - Soccer & Lacrosse • Daktronics Scoreboard for McCusker Swimming Complex and Bobby Campbell Stadium • Daktronics timing system for McCusker swimming complex • State-of-the-art Athletic Traning Facility at BCS • Four coaches and staff offices as BCS • New folding chairs sponsored by Coca-Cola for gymnasium • Updated scorer’s table for gymnasium • 100 open wood lockers were installed in the new women’s soccer, men’s soccer, and men’s lacrosse locker rooms • Flat screen televisions installed in new women’s soccer, men’s soccer and men’s lacrosse locker rooms

Upcoming projects for 2014-15 • Press Box at Bobby Campbell Stadium • Renovation of Gymnasium Lobby • Updating the women’s basketball locker room

Lynn University’s student-athletes had many opportunities to find success off the courts and fields this past academic year and, as usual, took full advantage of making the most of their resources. The Fighting Knights’ Life Skills Program had another successful year while student-athletes had the resources to take courses in personal development, career development, leadership and community awareness. In these workshop-based classes, students learned how to be successful during their careers at Lynn University, in the community and in pursuing a career outside of athletics. In the first-year personal development and leadership course, over 80 new student-athletes worked with all 12 head coaches and seven athletic administrator to work through Jeff Janssen’s 10-Week Team Captain’s Leadership Manual, making the course a memorable experience. The volleyball team won its fifth straight Knights Cup and $1,000 to use towards any program enhancements. Student-athletes competed on behalf of their teams and earned points in the following categories that align with the Life Skills Program: Academic Excellence, Athletic Excellence, Personal Development, Career Development, and Community Service. The Knights Cup competition encourages the achievement of academic excellence, promotes personalized choices for supplementing the student-athlete’s educational background, provides opportunities for personal development, involves the student-athlete as a role-model/leader, and supports the team concept and encourages studentathletes to support fellow student-athletes. Behind the volleyball team, women’s golf and women’s swimming finished in the top three. Serving the South Florida area in many different capacities, Lynn’s student-athletes participated in a record 3,005 community service hours. They strengthened relationships with Habitat for Humanity, Stratford Court Retirement Home, Community Blood Center of South Florida and the American Cancer Society, while continuing to help other established organizations. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee continued to collect items for a charity of their choice as part of the Sunshine State Conference donation competition. This year, our student-athletes took a different route and donated their items, consisting of toiletries and clothes, to the local Haitian communities through the Lynn University housekeeping staff. In total, student-athletes sent 3.420 items. SAAC’s five-year total of items collected and donated to charity has now been raised to 24,031. Lynn completed granting its sixth “wish” through the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida. The Fighting Knights conducted a variety of fundraisers to raise $2,500; the amount needed to be a partner wishmaker with the foundation. The men’s and women’s golf team led the fundraising efforts, earning over $2,000 at their annual charity golf tournament at Boca Delray Country Club. Building upon a relationship that started by hosting a single BINGO Night four years ago, SAAC continued to visit Stratford Court Retirement Home on numerous occasions. The Fighting Knights hosted BINGO at least once a month and organized the 5th Annual “Senior Prom” for the residents. The “Senior Prom” served as the marquee event as over 250 senior citizens attended the “Rock and Roll” themed event in late January. The newest community outreach this past year came in September when baseball head coach Rudy Garbalosa proudly announced the signing of 10-year old Ari Cohen to a national letter of intent at a press conference surrounded by family and friends at the Lynn Baseball Field. Cohen joined the Lynn baseball family through Team IMPACT, a program dedicated to improving the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses by establishing and expanding vibrant teambased support networks. Lynn was the first University in the state of Florida and the Southeast Region to join forces with Team IMPACT. Ari came to practice about once a week all year long and the baseball team volunteered at numerous events at Ari’s school, hospital and other organizational activities for nearly 750 hours.

Coming off a successful first year, the Lynn University cross country team entered the 2013 season looking to solidify their place as contenders in the south region. The freshman duo of Sarah Northup and Kayla MacVean joined last season’s core group of Sarah Harmouch, Stephanie McGowan, Kinsey Roberts and All-Sunshine State Conference selection Gabriella Wuyke. The squad showed early that this season would be a big one by recording the first top-three finish in program history at the Embry-Riddle Invite while Wuyke recorded the first runner-up performance. The team continued to elevate their efforts at the Disney Cross Country Classic with five career-best times in the final 5K of the season Wuyke set a new bar for the Blue & White in her final season, earning SSC All-Championship, All-SSC and All-South Region accolades for the second consecutive year. Joined by Sarah Northup at the NCAA South Regional, Wuyke placed third overall to become the first runner in school history to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championship.

Lynn University’s men’s soccer team had a different feeling in 2013 following the graduation of 14 seniors who helped the program reach consecutive NCAA National Championships. The Fight of a Knight mantra was brought forth in a season where the team broke in nine new starters. Opening victories on the road to start the year showed Lynn would still be a team to be reckoned with but four losses in six games brought doubt upon the storied program. A team full of new faces finally learned to play together in mid-October, starting a four game winning streak and ending the season with seven wins in nine matches. The Fighting Knights luck would run out in the Sunshine State Conference Championship finals when they would tie rival Barry 2-2 but fall 6-5 in a shootout to finish the season 11-5-2 overall and 6-2 in the SSC. A defender throughout his life, Michael O’Neill made the successful transition to midfield where he led the team with a career-best seven goals and 16 points to earn Second Team All-SSC and NSCAA All-South Recognition. He was not alone in earning personal accolades with Chris Hellmann, Javier Mochon, Jason Sangha and Jack Winter also garnering All-SSC honors. Sangha joined an elite class of players at Lynn when he was also named a Daktronics All-America Honorable Mention selection, making him just the fourth player in program history to be a three-time All-America honoree. More impressive than the individual awards was Lynn repeating as National Champions in the classroom. The Fighting Knights posted the highest grade point average in the nation among all four-year institutions for the second straight year.

The 2013 women’s soccer season was one filled with growing pains as the team finished the season 4-8-4 overall while just missing out on the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. The Fighting Knights had close games against nationally-ranked and NCAA Tournamentbound schools Armstrong Atlantic, Barry and Rollins while earning a 2-2 tie against 17th ranked Tampa. Page Meggison capped off a sterling career by starting 63 of a possible 64 games while playing every minute. The four-year senior was even featured on ESPN Sports Center’s Top-10 plays for her dazzling two-goal performance against Flagler. Freshmen Jordyn Turner and Brittany Garbina logged significant playing time and look to have a bright future with the squad as Turner led the team with three goals and eight points and Garbina joined Meggison as playing every minute of every game. Away from the pitch, the women’s soccer team boasted the thirdbest grade point average at Lynn at 3.68 while 20 of the 21 players garnered Sunshine State Commissioner’s Honor Roll recognition.

In head coach Jeff Price’s return to the Lynn University basketball court the men’s basketball team posted a 9-18 overall record while going 3-13 in Sunshine State Conference play. The Fighting Knights began the season with 5-1 mark before wrapping up the 2013 portion of the season with a win over Clayton State in the annual Courtyard by Boca Raton Marriott Invitational. Fred Landers had 28 points against #4 Florida Southern on January 13, and won its first SSC game against Rollins on January 15. Lynn University’s women’s swimming team made tremendous strides in year two of existence. Not only did the team send two swimmers to the NCAA National Championship but they finished the fall semester with the highest grade-point average in the nation and the spring tied for third among all four-year institutions and junior colleges The Fighting Knights competed in 10 team events while hosting three at the McCusker Pool Complex. Lynn welcomed the first-ever swimming tri-meet on October 12, competing against Saint Leo and Florida Tech. The Blue & White earned four SSC Swimmer of the Week accolades leading up to the Sunshine State Conference Championships and was able to collect a program-record five medals at the championship, including the first-ever relay team medal, a bronze in the 200 medley relay for Thalie Carmigniani, Tyne Potgieter, Tieri Erasito and Julia Pedersen. Potgieter would go on to win silvers in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and Carmigniani picked up double silver in the 1000 freestyle and 200 backstroke. The duo of Potgieter and Carmigniani once again qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championship where they helped Lynn finish 31st in the country. Carmigniani placed in the top-16 in both the 1000 free and 200 back while Potgieter earned top-16 honors in the 100 breaststroke.

Lynn University’s 2014 baseball season proved to be one for the ages as the Fighting Knights exceeded expectations, qualified for the NCAA Tournament and was bestowed a bevy of accolades. The first intercollegiate athletic program in school history claimed its 900th win when it knocked off Florida Southern 3-1 in the second game of its doubleheader on March 15. Lynn would go on to record its third consecutive 30-win season, and 14th overall, post the fourth-best winning percentage and earn a national ranking of as high as No. 4. In league play, the Fighting Knights logged the second-most Sunshine State victories while setting a program record by winning their first six SSC series, including the second series win at Florida Southern and first series victory over Barry since 2008. It all cumulated with the fourth NCAA Tournament appearance and highest seed (no. 2) in program history. With such a fantastic year, the accolades began to pour in before the season had ended. Sal Giardina, Jr., was named the SSC Player of the Year, making Lynn the first school in the league’s storied history with three consecutive Player of the Year selections. The Fighting Knights would boast three first team picks for the third time while the five overall honorees are the second-most overall, and most since 2008. In addition to conference player of the year recognition, Giardina collected NCBWA and ABCA/Rawlings South Region Player of the Year accolades and was joined by reliever Bill Mendek on the All-South Region First Team three times, giving Lynn a pair of first team all-region selections by three publications for the first time in school history.

The loss of several key seniors left questions for the 2013-14 Lynn University men’s golf team but a trio of newcomers, coupled with the rise of some wily veterans, kept the team in contention for a national championship. The Fighting Knights finished in the top-five in 10 tournaments and made cross country trips to the Brickyard Invitational in Indianapolis and the GolfWeek D2 Invite in Sunriver, Oregon. A slow fall semester gave way to a quick start in the spring as Lynn moved to No. 2 in the nation following convincing victories at the Titan Winter Invitational and Matlock Invite. The Fighting Knights ended the regular season with five consecutive topfive finishes, including a third-place finish at the Sunshine State Conference Championship, before qualifying for the NCAA Tournament for the 11th consecutive year. Sitting two shots out of the top-seven with six holes to play at the South/ Southeast Super Regional, the Fighting Knights came together to finish fifth overall and advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship for the second consecutive year, third time in the last four years and seventh overall. Again Lynn ran into trouble on the third day at the National Championship but rallied back from ninth place to finish sixth and move into the match play portion for the third time in four years. Unfortunately, the magic ran out as the Blue & White fell 4-1 to Chico State to finish as national quarterfinalists. New faces Elliott Whitley and Keith Greene successfully made the transition from junior college to rank as two of the top golfers in the country, each garnering All-SSC and PING All-South Region recognition, ranking first and third on the team in stroke average and combing for 10 top-10 individual finishes. Senior Ernesto Vitienes, one of two returners from last year’s national-runner up squad, recorded the lowest scoring average of his caree, placed in the top-10 four times and provided the senior stability for the team.

Not many teams can provide an adequate encore following a national championship but Lynn University’s 2013-14 women’s golf team was more than up for the task and sent shockwaves through Division II golf along the way. The Fighting Knights put forth not only the greatest season in school history but at the NCAA Division II level as well. After opening the year with a runner-up finish on the same course they had won the title a year earlier, the Blue & White went on a winning streak matched only once in the history of the Sunshine State Conference. Lynn would go on to win seven consecutive tournaments by an average of 15 strokes while the team had an individual win or finish runner-up in all seven events. A second-place finish at the NCAA Division I tournament Cincinnati Spring Invite only fueled the team further as they would win the regular seasonfinale Bash-at-the-Beach Invite by 27 strokes. Heading into the SSC Championship as the undisputed No. 1 ranked team in the nation, the ladies stumbled a bit out of the gates with a second place finish after the first day of competition but roared into the lead on the second day. They would hold on for a four-stroke victory to claim the first SSC Title in program history and No. 31 overall for Lynn University. The Fighting Knights took their talents to another level during the NCAA Tournament, winning the South Region Super 2 Regional for the second consecutive year and outpacing the next school by 17 shots. Ellen Chambers became the first women’s golfer in program history to earn medalist honors in a NCAA Regional and two of her teammates joined her in the top-10. With the greatest of expectations riding them at the national championship and a title or bust mentality, the Blue & White did not wither away; rather they rose to the challenge and collected not only the program’s fifth national crown, and No. 22 for Lynn University, but swept honors with an individual

national champion as well. Lynn put forth the second-lowest 72-hole score in championship history in winning by 29-strokes to claim back-to-back national titles. Louise Manalo then became the fifth individual national champion after shooting a program-best 287, including becoming one of just three players in school history to shoot 68 in a round, to beat teammate Jessica Bradley by one shot. The numbers are overwhelming: 11 wins in 13 tournaments with two runnerups; a 76.9 overall stroke average, 296.58 team average and 41 individual top-10 finishes. Individually, Jessica Bradley became the first golfer in program history to be named the WGCA National Player of the Year after shooting a 73.27 stroke average with three victories and 13 top-10 finishes, all-program records. In just three years at the helm, head coach Danny Randolph has now won two national championships, two NCAA South Region titles and one SSC title and added WGCA National Coach of the Year accolades as well. He is the eighth coach at Lynn to collect National Coach of the Year recognition and second from the women’s golf program after Gregg Cox was honored in 1995 and 1996. Samantha Smolen was also named a First Team All-American, marking the second time in school history Lynn has had two first team selections in a season. Manalo picked up second team All-America honors while Ellen Chambers earned AllAmerica Honorable Mention recognition while also becoming the fourth studentathlete in Lynn history to be the recipient of the NCAA Division II Elite 89 Award. Other firsts for the program included Chambers being honored for SSC ScholarAthlete of the Year and the NCAA Woman of the Year nominee while Bradley collected SSC Female Athlete of the Year honors. Additionally, Chambers is the first student-athlete in SSC history to receive both the female scholar-athlete of the year and the nomination for NCAA Woman of the Year award and Lynn became hte first school to sweep all three accolades.

The 2014 season saw a lot of firsts for the Lynn University men’s lacrosse team. In their inaugural season the Fighting Knights went 1-10 overall and 0-5 in sunshine state conference play. Joey Bacarella would score the first goal in program history in the season opener against Wheeling Jesuit to give Lynn its first ever lead. The Blue & White would then pick up their first career victory in a 15-3 win over Lees-McRae as Brian Kiel recorded the first multi-goal and Tyler Janvrin notched the first multi-assist games for the new program. Kiel would establish the school record for points in a game with eight and goals with five, which was also tied by Danny Egan in a loss at Florida Tech. The lacrosse team would set history once more on March 30th when Lynn hosted the first-ever team-sport night contest in school history at the newlyconstructed Bobby Campbell Stadium as Janvrin would be the first to score under the lights on Malfitano Field in the loss to Florida Southern. Brian Kiel and Chris D’Angelo were named to the firstever Sunshine State Conference All-freshman team earning the programs first honors in SSC history. On the offensive end, Kiel led the Fighting Knights in goals with 15 while Janvrin led in overall points and assists with 22 and 11. Teedo Ferrino recorded 191 saves on the year, including a seasonhigh 22 at Florida Tech, with Chris D’Angelo serving as the leader with 82 ground balls and a 55 percent face-off success rate.

The 2014 softball team kicked off their season in Georgia at the Peach Belt-Sunshine State Conference Crossover Challenge and while the Blue & White fought hard against No. 24 Columbus State and No. 15 North Georgia ultimately went 2-2 in the tournament. The Fighting Knights gained momentum as the season continued by sweeping Ave Maria in all four meetings, including a 20-0 victory in five innings which tied for the second-most runs scored for a single game in program history. Lynn later picked up its first series victory over rival Barry since 2005, giving the team 20 wins in a season for the first time in four years. The softball team’s offense turned in its best season in nine years, scoring the most runs and belting the most home runs since 2005 while the team ranks in the top-three of each category all-time at Lynn. Seniors Devin Kochergen, Danielle McNeill and Kasey Murray all etched their names in the record books as well with Kochergen ranking in the top-five all-time for home runs and RBI for a season and top-10 for a career. McNeill leaves as the program leader in hit-by-pitches, doubling the total of the next player, and second place in on-base percentage while Murray ranks in the top10 for wins, innings pitched and doubles for a career.

The Lynn University men’s tennis team put together a 10-0 record and No. 4 national ranking to start the 2014 campaign strong while earning head coach Mike Perez his 400th career win at the helm of the program in his 25th season. The milestone came against defending NAIA national champions, Embry Riddle in a 6-3 win. The Blue & White then suffered its first loss to No. 3 West Florida in a close 5-4 battle but got back on track with a win over NAIA second-ranked Auburn Montgomery. Two back-to-back regional losses to No. 2 Armstrong and No. 9 Columbus State didn’t stop the Fighting Knights from finishing the season strong as they earned big wins over No. 46 New York Tech and No. 32 Florida Southern. Lynn would go on to post a 5-1 Sunshine State Conference record after losing to Barry in the final game of the regular season in a match that determined the firstever SSC Regular season Champion. In the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, the Blue & White lost to the Bucs,5-2, to finish as the SSC Runners Up for the third straight season. The Blue & White made its 12th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament while finishing the regular season ranked 8th in division II. In the first round Lynn took on Rollins where they ended the Tars post season dreams early but would have to take on defending national champion Barry in the South Region 2 Championship. The Bucs halted Lynn’s postseason run keeping them from the NCAA National Championships for the second straight year. The Fighting Knights finished the season with a 16-7 record and a 12-2 home record while ranking seventh in the ITA Division II poll. Lynn’s doubles teams were anchored by senior Alessio Iannozzi and freshman Tomas Prokop, who posted a 14-3 record primarily at the No. 3 spot and were named All-SSC First Team honorees. Danny Riggs and Paolo Volpicelli paired for Lynn’s highest doubles rank of eighth while posting a 10-12 record, earning AllSunshine State Conference Second Team honors. Iannozzi, Prokop and Riggs were also named to the All-SSC First Team giving Lynn seven all conference selections, the most since 2011.

A year after just missing the national championships for the first time in program history, the sixth-ranked Lynn University’s women’s tennis team came back more focused than ever, starting the season with a 16-0 record. The Fighting Knights would suffer their first loss to defending national champions Armstrong 6-3, but would not let the Pirates hold them back, winning each of their next five matches. Barry & Lynn clashed again for the first-ever Sunshine State Regular Season Title but the longtime rivals prevailed in the end. The Fighting Knights finished the regular season 20-2 and 7-1 in the sunshine state conference. Lynn lost to Saint Leo in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament semifinals but still earned its 18th-consecutive NCAA Tournament berth where the Fighting Knights would defeat Stillman, 5-0 in the first round. A 5-3 loss to SSC foe Saint Leo in the South Region 2 Finals would end the Blue & White’s season with a 22-4 record while cracking the top-5 in the end of the season ITA Division II poll. Valentine Confalonieri is the latest in a long-line of women’s tennis players to reach No.1 in the nation in singles. The sophomore became the first women’s tennis player in school history to win the ITA Small College Superbowl in the fall and carried that momentum into the spring season where she compiled an unblemished 26-0 record at the No. 1 position. Not to be outdone, senior Ioana Ivan also put together a near-perfect season playing primarily at the No. 3 spot of Lynn’s lineup with a 22-1 mark while embarking on a 31-match win streak. The Fighting Knights showed resiliency throughout the lineup and have received fantastic contributions from freshman Rosalie Willig, who went 19-5 at the No. 2 singles position, and Andrea Berkova, who was 11-8 playing at No. 4. Confalonieri was named the SSC Player of the Year while Rosalie Willig was honored as the Freshman of the Year, marking the third consecutive season a Lynn athlete as claimed the award (Confalonieri 2013, Sabine Krause 2012). Confalonieri and Ivan once again earned All-SSC First Team honors while Willig was named to the second team for singles and doubles. Berkova joined Willig on the All-SSC Second Team for doubles when the duo combined for a 16-3 record throughout the season.
